Within ΛCDM, galaxies form and evolve within dark matter halos, with both central and satellite galaxies contributing to the total stellar mass content. Virtually every massive galaxy harbors a supermassive black hole (SMBH) at its center, with a small fraction of the population growing by actively accreting material; we call this an active galactic nucleus (AGN). The processes giving rise to an AGN phase (i.e., growth of a SMBH) releases enormous amounts of energy in the form of radiation, outflows, and relativistic jets that are able to significantly affect the formation and evolution of galaxies. Presidents, prosecutors, and judges often announce policies on how they will make discretionary decisions. These policies have met the criticism that discretion must be the product of an assessment of the particular facts of a case. Decisionmakers cannot base discretionary decisions on policy considerations, nor can they adopt policies stating how they intend to exercise their discretion. To do so, the argument goes, does not constitute an exercise of discretion, but rather an abdication of it.

Text is a vehicle to convey information that reflects the writer’s linguistic style and communication patterns. By studying these attributes, we can discover latent insights about the author and their underlying message. This article uses such an approach to better understand patent applications and their inventors.

While prior research focuses on patent metadata (i.e., filing year or gendered inventor names), we employ machine learning and natural language processing to extract hidden information from the words in patent applications. Through these methods, we find that inventor gender can often be identified from textual attributes—even without knowing the inventor’s name. This ability …

The government says religious things. From monuments and holiday displays to legislative prayers, religion saturates the government’s public voice. But how can that be permissible when the Establishment Clause, at least in theory, indicates the government should be religiously neutral?

So far, the Supreme Court’s attempts to address the puzzle have come up short. Early on, the Court suggested that seemingly all government speech must be secular, or that it refrain from “endorsing” religion. This study utilizes a dynamic social impact theory (DSIT) framework to analyze human influence on the popular Netflix television series Squid Game: The Challenge. A British reality competition, Squid Game: The Challenge is comprised of ten-episodes and features 456 contestants vying for $4.56 million. As contestants self-organize into social alliances, their shared attitudes, beliefs, and values transform the physical space into a dynamic social space. Dementia poses an escalating public health challenge in Ghana due to an expanding aging population, yet rural awareness remains critically low. Guided by Mohan Dutta’s Culture-Centered Approach (CCA), this PRISMA-compliant qualitative systematic review synthesized ten peer-reviewed articles to examine cultural perceptions and lived experiences surrounding dementia in rural Ghana. The findings highlight that cognitive decline is widely misattributed to witchcraft or normalized as standard aging. Witchcraft misconceptions subject individuals—especially older women—to severe stigmatization, social exclusion, physical abuse, and banishment to "witch camps". Meanwhile, normalizing symptoms as ordinary aging delays critical medical care and shifts family decision-making away from patients. Furthermore, …

This essay examines how the public-facing presence of state communication associations, particularly their websites and social media accounts, shapes whether communication instructors and professionals perceive these organizations as relevant to their work. Drawing on a focused review of several state association websites and social media profiles, along with scholarship on professional associations, contingent faculty, K–12 professional learning, and nonprofit digital strategy, the essay identifies recurring patterns: visually dated sites, sparse or inward-facing information, and limited attention to K–12 teachers, contingent faculty, students, and practitioners. This essay argues that state communication associations are uniquely positioned to serve as first-response advocacy networks for the communication discipline. In a higher education climate shaped by declining public trust, program cuts, academic freedom concerns, enrollment pressures, and contingent labor, state associations can provide local forms of connection, support, and advocacy that complement the work of regional and national associations. Drawing attention to their proximity, relationships, and responsiveness, this essay considers how these associations can help members recognize emerging threats, share resources, coordinate responses, and communicate the public value of communication education. BACKGROUND: Cardiogenic shock (CS) in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) involves rapidly changing clinical, hemodynamic, and metabolic factors that current models cannot effectively integrate.

Propionibacteriaceae appear to have adapted to life on humans during the domestication of cattle. These microbial immigrants formed the genus Cutibacterium, and a descendent of those microbial trailblazers (C acnes) now dominates 25% of human skin. C acnes colonization of human skin requires the protein RoxP. Although all Cutibacteria encode this adaptation to life on humans, nothing like RoxP has been found in any other organism. In this study, we report an extensive assessment of 21 RoxP orthologs, which identified conserved molecular surfaces linked to heme-dependent oligomerization and low pH stability. Severe aplastic anemia (SAA) is treated with a hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) in the presence of an HLA-matched sibling donor (MSD) with disease-free survival (DFS) of >90%. In the absence of an MSD, immunosuppressive therapy (IST) can induce remission but concerns for relapsed/refractory disease and clonal hematopoiesis persist. IST failure is an indication for HCT. Modern HCT approaches target barriers such as graft rejection (GR), graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), and transplant-related toxicities. Traditionally, total body irradiation (TBI) inclusive HCT conditioning helps decrease GR, but the use of TBI in children increases concerns for late effects such as malignancies. Multiple myeloma (MM) remains incurable despite advances in treatment options. Although tumor subtypes and specific DNA abnormalities are linked to worse prognosis, the impact of immune dysfunction on disease emergence and/or treatment sensitivity remains unclear. We developed an Immune Atlas of MM by generating profiles of 1,397,272 single cells from the bone marrow (BM) of 337 newly diagnosed participants and characterized immune and hematopoietic cell populations. Cytogenetic risk-based analysis revealed heterogeneous associations with T cells of BM, with 17p13 deletion showing distinct enrichment of a type 1 interferon signature. BACKGROUND: Immunohistochemistry (IHC) testing is the primary method to determine HER2 status at many institutions, often with reflex to in situ hybridization (ISH). DNA- and RNA- based platforms are emerging for HER-2 assessment. While approved IHC algorithms exist for HER2 scoring in breast and gastric carcinomas, neither has been validated in endometrial cancer. OBJECTIVES: We evaluated Mycoplasma genitalium (MG) positivity and co-infection with Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and/or Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG), based on results from a trial assessing clinical performance of the Cobas® Liat CT/NG/MG point-of-care test.

METHODS: A prospective, US, multicenter, noninterventional study assessed MG positivity in prospective urine samples (male) and clinician-collected vaginal swabs (female) from symptomatic/asymptomatic patients aged ≥14 years attending various clinical settings. Participants were designated positive or negative for MG, CT, and NG based on combined results from three US Food and Drug Administration-approved assays and one laboratory-developed test. PURPOSE: Same-day surgery (SDS) cancellations have significant implications on patients and hospitals. This study aimed to identify demographic and socioeconomic factors that impact SDS cancellations across a single pediatric health system.

METHODS: A case-control retrospective review captured patients (age < 18) who underwent SDS procedures from July 2022 to August 2024. Patients were included if they underwent any procedure at three operative sites: a tertiary pediatric academic hospital (PAH) and two outpatient surgery centers (OSC). Patients whose SDS was cancelled (n = 2,034) were compared to those whose surgeries proceeded as scheduled (n = 25,573). Patient zip codes were matched to Child Opportunity Index (COI) 2.0 data.

RESULTS: The overall SDS cancellation rate was 7.37 %, with a significantly higher rate observed at the PAH compared to OSC (11.4 % vs 53 %, p < 0.001). Patients with cancelled cases were more likely to identify as Black and have the lowest quintile COI (p < 0.001). Cancelled in preop and no shows were two reasons with the most racial disparities. In a sub-analysis comparing cancelled cases between operating sites, PAH cancelled patients tended to be Black (23.8 % vs 11.7 %, p < 0.001) and have very low COI (20.1 % vs. 10.6 %, p < 0.001).

CONCLUSION: SDS cancellation rates are significantly higher amongst patients who identify as Black and reside in low opportunity neighborhoods. Disparities in cancellation rate are more significant in patients scheduled at the urban PAH compared …

This secondary data analysis aimed to determine the nature of the relationship between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) risk, biological age acceleration, and nonspecific chronic low back pain (CLBP). In total, 199 adults aged 18-82 years who filled both STOPBANG and pain questionnaires subsetted for secondary analysis. Based on the STOPBANG questionnaire, 104 had a low OSA risk and 95 had an intermediate or high OSA risk. This study investigated whether navigation abilities were associated with amyloid and tau pathology in cognitively normal older adults.

PURPOSE: To determine if use of mechanical thrombectomy (MT) impacts survival and additional outcomes in patients with acute intermediate-high-risk and high-risk pulmonary embolism (PE) who were evaluated by a Pulmonary Embolism Response Team (PERT).

METHODS: This retrospective, single-center study included patients with intermediate-high-risk and high-risk PE who received PERT evaluation over 3.5 years and were treated with anticoagulation (AC) alone or MT + AC. INTRODUCTION: Alport syndrome features a defective glomerular basement membrane (GBM) due to variants in COL4A3, COL4A4, and COL4A5. The most severe forms, which lack the GBM's collagen α3α4α5(IV) network, progress from hematuria in early childhood to proteinuria, chronic kidney disease, and kidney failure by the age of ∼30. As a monogenic disease without specific treatments, and with podocytes being the only glomerular cells that synthesize collagen α3α4α5(IV), the ability to efficiently deliver genes to Alport podocytes could open up new possibilities for treatment.
