Role Of Functional Social Support In Adherence To Hypertension Therapy: A Community-Based Study In Nepal, Shirish Gurung
Role Of Functional Social Support In Adherence To Hypertension Therapy: A Community-Based Study In Nepal, Shirish Gurung
Public Health Theses
Introduction: Despite evidence that adherence to hypertension therapy is associated with improved blood pressure control and health outcomes, adherence rates remain suboptimal. This study aims to examine the association between perceived functional social support and adherence to hypertension therapy in Nepal.
Methods: This study utilized cross-sectional baseline data collected from an ongoing community health worker-led hypertension prevention and control trial in Sindhupalchok District, Nepal. Adherence to hypertension therapy was measured using the Hill-Bone High Blood Pressure Therapy Compliance Scale, and perceived functional social support was measured using the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey. Modified Poisson regression with robust standard …
Does Gender Moderate The Association Between Perceived Choice Of Being A Caregiver And Psychological Well-Being, Ran Huo
Public Health Theses
Background: A substantial proportion of U.S. adults assume informal caregiving roles, yet little is known about whether they perceived a lack of choice when becoming caregivers, or the patterns and outcomes of such perceived choice. In addition, while the caregiving experience is often different by gender, little is known about whether gender influences perceived choice or moderates its association with psychological well-being. This study examines gender differences in perceived caregiving choice and its relationship with mental health outcomes. Methods: We conducted a secondary analysis of nationally representative data from the Understanding America Study - Caregiving, Lifecourse, and Emotion and Aging …

Using The Behavior Change Wheel To Understand The Role Of Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs, Siqi Jiang
Public Health Theses
Objectives: This review aimed to summarize recent antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) implemented in pediatric outpatient settings and analyze how these interventions influence appropriate antibiotic use. Methods: PubMed and Scopus were searched for studies published between 2016 and 2026 globally. Studies were included if they evaluated an antimicrobial stewardship intervention in a pediatric outpatient setting. Only English studies are included. Studies that describe the results of implementations and policies related to ASP are included, including randomized controlled trials, quasi-experiments, natural experiments, quality improvement studies and observational studies, and longitudinal studies. Interventions in selected articles were analyzed using the COM-B (Capability, Opportunity, Motivation-Behavior) …
Family-Related Stressors And Mental Health Among Internally Displaced Young Adults In Mozambique: A Mixed-Methods Study With Implications For Global Mental Health Interventions, Jaspreet Kandola
Public Health Theses
Mental health outcomes among displaced populations are shaped by post-displacement stressors, yet the role of family dynamics, specifically, remains insufficiently understood. This study examines how family-related stressors are associated with mental health among internally displaced young adults in Nampula Province, Mozambique. Using a convergent parallel mixed methods design, this study integrated survey data from 601 participants with qualitative data from in-depth interviews with a subsample of 16 participants. Quantitative analyses showed that family separation and concern for family members in conflict zones were associated with higher posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, with family separation also linked to higher anxiety and …
Indoor Environmental Quality Perceptions And Self-Reported Symptoms Among West Haven Va Healthcare Employees, Joseph Hyong Kim
Indoor Environmental Quality Perceptions And Self-Reported Symptoms Among West Haven Va Healthcare Employees, Joseph Hyong Kim
Public Health Theses
Background: Indoor environmental quality in workplace settings influences worker well-being, yet the relationship between perceived workplace environment and reported symptoms remains less well characterized in heterogeneous healthcare settings. This study describes perceived workplace environmental quality and self-reported symptoms among employees at the West Haven Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center.
Methods: An observational, cross-sectional study was conducted of VA employees across clinical and non-clinical roles to assess perceived work environment, symptoms and indoor exposures using an electronic survey and personal and area air monitoring of indoor volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and viruses. Perceived workplace environmental quality was assessed using the MM-40 …

Maternal Sleep, Sleep Medication Use, And Birth Outcomes: A Pilot Study Of The Pregnancy, Environment, And Child Health (Peach) Cohort, Samantha Lydell
Public Health Theses
Pregnancy is often a period of poor sleep quality. Previous research has linked reduced sleep quality and difficulty sleeping during pregnancy to adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. However, little is known about how sleep medication use may influence these associations. This pilot study examines the relationships between poor sleep, sleep medication use, and birth outcomes in the Pregnancy, Environment, and Child Health (PEACH) cohort. This study included 136 participants from the PEACH cohort linked to Yale New Haven Health delivery records. Poor sleep and sleep medication use were self-reported. Outcomes were gestational age at birth (days) and birth weight (grams). …
Understanding The Influence Of Hiv Status On Perceived Barriers To Reproductive Care For Pregnant Haitian Women: A Framework-Guided Qualitative Analysis, Olivia Mccarthy
Understanding The Influence Of Hiv Status On Perceived Barriers To Reproductive Care For Pregnant Haitian Women: A Framework-Guided Qualitative Analysis, Olivia Mccarthy
Public Health Theses
Background: Haiti has the highest maternal mortality rate in Latin America and the Caribbean, where pregnant women face substantial structural, social, and economic barriers to care. Women living with HIV encounter additional challenges, including stigma, breaches of privacy, and discrimination within healthcare settings. Although prior research has examined maternal health and HIV related stigma in Haiti, little is known about how HIV status differentially shapes pregnant women’s perceptions of barriers to maternal healthcare. Methods: This study draws on data from seven focus groups conducted in rural communities in Haiti’s Centre Department between 2018 and 2019. Participants included 65 pregnant women, representing …
Protecting Older Individuals From Age Discrimination Harming Psychological Well-Being: Role Of Neighborhood Cohesion, Tongyu Qiu
Public Health Theses
Age discrimination is known to harm older adults’ mental health, yet factors that may protect against this harm have received little attention. Prior studies have focused primarily on individual-level factors rather than community-level characteristics, such as neighborhood cohesion, which may be more amenable to large-scale interventions and policies. To our knowledge, no prior study has examined whether neighborhood cohesion buffers the association between age discrimination and worse psychological well-being in older adults. Participants aged 60 years and older were drawn from the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) study. We hypothesized that baseline age discrimination would predict worse psychological well-being …
Status, Inclusion, And Self-Esteem In Daily Life: Examining Moderation By Social Anxiety, Dylan Schnur
Status, Inclusion, And Self-Esteem In Daily Life: Examining Moderation By Social Anxiety, Dylan Schnur
Public Health Theses
Prior work has shown a distinct pattern in how social feedback shapes self-belief and self-esteembetween individuals with and without social anxiety disorders (SAD). EMA-type studies have proven to be valuable because these types of studies can capture differences in cognition, health, and behavior across forms of psychopathology between- and within individuals. To our knowledge, no prior studies akin to EMA have examined between- and within-person associations of status and inclusion on self-esteem and moderation by social anxiety when positive and negative feedback, regarding these traits, are experienced. Across this 21-day ecological momentary assessment study, participants (N = 175, 12,021 observations) …
Influenza-Associated Hospitalizations And Socioeconomic Status In Southern Connecticut, 2022-2025, Allison Traiger
Influenza-Associated Hospitalizations And Socioeconomic Status In Southern Connecticut, 2022-2025, Allison Traiger
Public Health Theses
Background: Influenza is a common respiratory illness in the United States responsible for hundreds of thousands of influenza-associated hospitalizations each year. To implement effective preventative interventions, it is crucial to understand which populations are most at risk of severe illness and hospitalization. Prior studies have found that increased rates of poverty and crowding are associated with increased rates of hospitalization. Methods: This study explores the connection between neighborhood poverty, crowding, and influenza-associated hospitalization through the connection of hospitalized influenza cases with their census tract-level socioeconomic indicators. Addresses of hospitalized cases were geocoded and linked to data on poverty and crowding from …
Physical Therapy And Length Of Inpatient Stay In Relation To Neuropsychological Functioning Among Childhood Cancer Survivors: A Retrospective Cohort Study From The Heros Registry, Jingyi Zhang
Public Health Theses
Background: As 5-year survival after childhood cancer exceeds 85%, neuropsychological late effects have emerged as a key issue. Despite this, the impact of modifiable risk factors during cancer treatment on subsequent neuropsychological outcomes remains obscure. This study aimed to evaluate whether physical therapy (PT) and length of inpatient stay are associated with later neurocognitive, emotional, and behavioral outcomes in childhood cancer survivors (CCS).Methods: This study included 92 CCS who had available electronic health records (EHR) for cancer treatment and completed a neuropsychological evaluation 0–5 years after their treatment end date. Information on PT and length of inpatient stay (i.e., the …
Assessing Cardiovascular Disease Risk And Healthcare Access Barriers To Identify Prevention Strategies Among Market Vendors In Uganda, Yumi Yang
Public Health Theses
Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) accounts for 10% of all deaths in Uganda, making it the leading cause of death among non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the country. Across sub-Saharan Africa, urban market vendors serve as key participants in the informal workforce. Research from West Africa suggests that vendors, many of whom are women, are a vulnerable population with high prevalence of CVD risk factors and structural barriers to healthcare access. However, limited research has examined this population in East Africa, and the present study is the first to characterize 10-year CVD risk and assess healthcare barriers among market vendors in Uganda. Methods: …

Restrictions On Party Status In Interpretations Of An Act Respecting First Nations, Inuit And Métis Children, Youth And Families, Jamesy Patrick, Alana Cattapan, Brenda Yuen
Journal of Law and Social Policy
An Act respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis children, youth and families came into force in January 2020 with the stated objectives of affirming Indigenous jurisdiction over child and family services, reducing the overrepresentation of Indigenous children in state care, and advancing Canada’s commitments under the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Central to achieving these objectives are the Act’s National Standards, which are intended to ensure Indigenous communities are meaningfully included in decision-making processes. While these standards were upheld by the Supreme Court of Canada in 2024 as constitutional, emerging jurisprudence reveals significant shortcomings in the …
Through A Glass Darkly: Targeting Cyber And Space Infrastructure In The Law Of War, Michael D. Minerva
Through A Glass Darkly: Targeting Cyber And Space Infrastructure In The Law Of War, Michael D. Minerva
Chapman Law Review
As modern militaries become more capable in the cyber and space domains, much of the legal debate has focused on how to legally conduct cyber and space operations. While important, that discussion has largely overlooked the legal implications for the rapidly growing cyber and space infrastructure that exists in the physical domain—commercial satellites like Starlink filling the night skies and data centers like those popping up all over northern Virginia. Most of this infrastructure is commercially developed and privately owned—presumptively civilian in nature—and yet used by militaries all over the world.

The Complex Decision-Making Processes Of Rural Emerging Adults: Counseling Beyond Dualism, Donna M. San Antonio Dr.
The Complex Decision-Making Processes Of Rural Emerging Adults: Counseling Beyond Dualism, Donna M. San Antonio Dr.
Faculty Scholarship
Rural adolescents approach the transition out of high school with individual concerns about making an emotionally or financially expensive “mistake,” family concerns about young people leaving home, and national and local concerns about declining rural economies and out-migration. The literature concerning this topic considers factors that influence youth aspirations in rural areas, such as economic barriers, the way higher education is valued, and perceptions of rural places as lacking in opportunity. However, there has been little study of the myriad interpersonal, emotional, and self-identity inputs that are part of the decision-making processes of rural emerging adults, and little is known …

The Triple Dominance Measure (choosing between prosocial, individualistic, and competitive options) and the Slider Measure (“sliding” between various orientations, for example, from individualistic to prosocial) are two widely used techniques to measure social value orientation, that is, the weight individuals assign to own and others’ outcomes in interdependent situations. Surprisingly, there is only moderate correspondence between these measures, but it is unclear why and what the implications are for identifying individual differences in social value orientation. Using a dataset of 8021 participants from 31 countries and regions, this study revealed that the Slider Measure identified fewer competitors than the Triple …
