The External Reach Of Eu Labour Law: Channels Of Influence And The Case Of Vietnam, Małgorzata Grześków Oct 2026

The External Reach Of Eu Labour Law: Channels Of Influence And The Case Of Vietnam, Małgorzata Grześków

Hasanuddin Law Review

This article examines how EU labour-law standards influence labour-related compliance beyond EU territory, despite the predominantly territorial character of public enforcement. It addresses the mismatch between the EU's state-centred enforcement framework and the transnational organisation of production, in which labour risks frequently arise in third-country supply chains. The aim of the article is to conceptualise ``external reach'' and to assess the main channels through which EU labour-related expectations operate outside the Union. Methodologically, the article combines doctrinal analysis with conceptual clarification and applies this framework to the case of Vietnam. It identifies three principal channels of external reach: labour provisions …

Beyond The Neocortex: Pallial Routes To The Edge Of Sentience, Oryan Zacks Oct 2026

Beyond The Neocortex: Pallial Routes To The Edge Of Sentience, Oryan Zacks

Animal Sentience

In The Edge of Sentience, the sentience candidacy of fishes and reptiles is strengthened if one accepts midbrain-centric theories of human consciousness. In this commentary I attempt to untether the two positions. I suggest that we need not look for a one-to-one match between the neocortex and a single pallial structure outside of mammals. Instead, a sufficient similarity might exist between the mammalian neocortex and the combination of pallium and midbrain in fishes and reptiles. Adopting an evolutionary perspective in the study of vertebrate brains could point to new investigation priorities in human and animal research.

Drone Photography: Balancing Privacy, Property And Legal Boundaries In Malaysia And Comparative Perspective, Manique Cooray, Wong Hua Siong, Ivy Chin Hann Wei Oct 2026

Drone Photography: Balancing Privacy, Property And Legal Boundaries In Malaysia And Comparative Perspective, Manique Cooray, Wong Hua Siong, Ivy Chin Hann Wei

Hasanuddin Law Review

The rapid advancement and widespread accessibility of drone technology have significantly transformed aerial photography, enabling individuals and organisations to capture images and videos with ease and affordability. While drone photography offers benefits in journalism, mapping, disaster management, and commercial services, it also raises legal concerns relating to land ownership, airspace rights, trespass, nuisance, and privacy. In many jurisdictions, existing legal frameworks were developed prior to unmanned aerial vehicles and struggle to address the regulatory challenges posed by drones. This study examines the legal implications of drone photography from the perspective of land law and privacy protection, with reference to Malaysia …

From Identity To Monetization: Governing Digital Royalty Management Through Digital Identity In Indonesia, Edmon Makarim, Brian Amy Prastyo, Nadirsyah Hosen, Hamzah Halim Oct 2026

From Identity To Monetization: Governing Digital Royalty Management Through Digital Identity In Indonesia, Edmon Makarim, Brian Amy Prastyo, Nadirsyah Hosen, Hamzah Halim

Hasanuddin Law Review

Platform-economy royalty systems still rely on fragmented metadata, intermediary-controlled databases, and Digital Rights Management (DRM) systems designed mainly for access control and copyright enforcement. Inconsistent attribution, delayed payments, and limited interoperability therefore persist. This article proposes a Digital Royalty Management Model, a governance framework grounded in Digital Identity and digital trust infrastructures. Its architecture links Subject Identity, Digital Object Identity, Rights and Entitlements, Licensing and Authorization, Provenance and Usage, Royalty Entitlement and Allocation, and Payment and Remuneration. Legally, identity assurance can support verifiable coordination of rights-related relationships without substituting for substantive copyright law. Using a qualitative, normative, conceptual, comparative, and …

Materiality In Saudi Real Estate Development Contracts: Comparative Jurisprudence And Cross-Border Disputes, Abdulrahman Mohammed Alzeer Oct 2026

Materiality In Saudi Real Estate Development Contracts: Comparative Jurisprudence And Cross-Border Disputes, Abdulrahman Mohammed Alzeer

Hasanuddin Law Review

The Saudi Civil Transactions Law (CTL) contains materiality-related standards that apply at different phases of the contract life cycle as separate doctrines rather than as an overarching doctrine. Article 74 uses a counterfactual analysis of partial invalidity and severability, while Articles 95 and 107 address the characteristics or purposes of contractual performance and the consequences of non-performance. The difficulty is not a conflict between Articles 74 and 107, but the absence of a unified analytical model for assessing the significance of non-performance under provisions on performance, interpretation, defect, and remedy. This article addresses these fragmented CTL elements and contends that …

From Classroom To Courtroom: Cross-Jurisdictional Legal Protections For Teachers In Student Disciplinary Cases, Sapto Budoyo, Nadea Lathifah Nugraheni, Praditya Arcy Pratama, Mahyuddin Bin Arsat Oct 2026

From Classroom To Courtroom: Cross-Jurisdictional Legal Protections For Teachers In Student Disciplinary Cases, Sapto Budoyo, Nadea Lathifah Nugraheni, Praditya Arcy Pratama, Mahyuddin Bin Arsat

Hasanuddin Law Review

Legal protections for teachers in student disciplinary cases are increasingly urgent. This study investigates the legal protections afforded to teachers in managing student disciplinary cases in Indonesia and Malaysia, highlighting how legislative frameworks, sociocultural influences, and institutional mechanisms shape teachers' rights and responsibilities. Using a comparative legal approach, the research analyzes statutory provisions, policy directives, and educational practices in both jurisdictions. The comparison indicates that Malaysia offers a more institutionally structured framework by defining school-level disciplinary authority and separating authorized disciplinary measures from individual teacher discretion. This framework balances educator autonomy with student rights, although gaps remain in enforcement and …

Criminal And Administrative Liability For Money Laundering In Automated Digital Insurance Brokerage: An Oman-Centred Comparative Analysis, Omar Musbih, Ghazi Ayed Alghathian Oct 2026

Criminal And Administrative Liability For Money Laundering In Automated Digital Insurance Brokerage: An Oman-Centred Comparative Analysis, Omar Musbih, Ghazi Ayed Alghathian

Hasanuddin Law Review

The digital transformation of Gulf insurance intermediation creates difficulties applying anti-money laundering (AML) rules where customer assessment, transaction processing, and compliance decisions are materially automated. This study examines how Omani law allocates criminal and administrative responsibility for money laundering in automated digital insurance brokerage, using Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as functional comparators and the European Union (EU) as a supranational benchmark for preventive regulation and systems governance. A doctrinal-comparative methodology analyses AML legislation, penal provisions, electronic-insurance regulation, digital-governance instruments, and publicly accessible judicial and supervisory materials through a qualitative comparative matrix. Three interconnected gaps emerge: a …

Convergent Molecular Pathways And Shared Genetic Mechanisms In Classic Syndromic Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Narrative Review, Ryan Bourgaize, Aderonke Oyetunji, Merlin G. Butler Oct 2026

Convergent Molecular Pathways And Shared Genetic Mechanisms In Classic Syndromic Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Narrative Review, Ryan Bourgaize, Aderonke Oyetunji, Merlin G. Butler

Student Publications

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are defined as a group of neurodevelopmental disorders that share common core features including restrictive repetitive stereotypic behavioral patterns and interests affecting social communication. Over 1,200 genes have been associated with ASD and impacted by copy number variants, chromosomal, and/or single gene defects or epigenetics. Genetic factors contribute to most cases of autism. At least twelve classic genetic disorders with autism as a common feature were selected involving 31 causative or implicated genes with 30 recognized as ASD genes. These disorders were selected to represent a range of genetic abnormalities such as chromosomal deletions, duplications, or …

Continuous Pacing During Lbbap With A Lumenless Lead: A Simplified, Zero-Cost Sliding-Contact Technique, Leonardo Marinaccio Oct 2026

Continuous Pacing During Lbbap With A Lumenless Lead: A Simplified, Zero-Cost Sliding-Contact Technique, Leonardo Marinaccio

Journal of the Saudi Heart Association

Left bundle branch pacing with lumenless leads usually requires disconnecting pacing cables during rotation, creating an electrical blind spot during septal advancement. We describe the "sliding-contact" technique, a zero-cost modification enabling continuous real-time monitoring. Retracting the rubber shroud of a standard sterile alligator pacing clip reduces jaw tension, allowing unrestricted lead pin rotation while preserving electrical continuity. In 42 consecutive cases, LBBAP was successfully performed without complications. Beat-to-beat feedback on QRS morphology, impedance, and injury current was maintained throughout rotation, improving procedural precision and safety without specialized equipment.

Inferior Vena Cava–Left Atrial Connection Hidden Beneath Large Secundum Defect. A Case Report, Alisia Yuana Putri, Muhammad Surya Tiyantara Oct 2026

Inferior Vena Cava–Left Atrial Connection Hidden Beneath Large Secundum Defect. A Case Report, Alisia Yuana Putri, Muhammad Surya Tiyantara

Journal of the Saudi Heart Association

Inferior vena cava (IVC) drainage into left atrium is an exceptionally rare congenital anomaly and may remain unrecognized when associated with a large atrial septal defect (ASD). A 35-year-old-man presented with progressive exertional dyspnea and fatigue. Transthoracic echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, and cardiac catheterization demonstrated a large secundum ASD with severe septal malalignment, while systemic venous drainage was interpreted as normal. During surgical ASD repair, an unexpected IVC-to-left atrium connection was identified and redirected to right atrium. Careful assessment of IVC inflow is essential in patients with large malaligned ASD despite normal oxygen saturation.

Literacy Activities To Prepare Mll Students For An Art Museum Visit, Marion J. Tate Oct 2026

Literacy Activities To Prepare Mll Students For An Art Museum Visit, Marion J. Tate

Michigan Reading Journal

This article describes how I prepared newcomer Yemeni students to visit, understand, and learn from museums while also strengthening their English language development and cultural identity. Many students had limited English proficiency; however, they brought rich personal, family, and cultural knowledge into the classroom. To build on those strengths, I used literacy-based activities before, during, and after museum visits. These activities included shared and independent reading with e-books, pre-assessment charts, vocabulary development, guided discussions, reflective writing, collage-making, and student-led decision-making. Each strategy helped students practice English in meaningful ways while connecting museum content to memory, immigration, history, culture, and identity. …

The Case For Ai-Enhanced Professional Learning For Literacy Educators, Michelle Wagner, Laura Gabrion, Judy Bowling, Beth Gonzalez Oct 2026

The Case For Ai-Enhanced Professional Learning For Literacy Educators, Michelle Wagner, Laura Gabrion, Judy Bowling, Beth Gonzalez

Michigan Reading Journal

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly reshaping how educators access information, analyze learning, and engage in professional learning, yet its adoption among K–12 educators remains limited compared to the students they serve. This article examines the potential of AI-enhanced professional learning for literacy educators and argues that professional learning providers must move beyond teaching about AI to intentionally using AI within the design, facilitation, and follow-up of professional learning experiences. Drawing on research related to effective professional development, adult learning theory, and emerging studies on generative AI, the authors explore how AI-enabled tools can support active, collaborative, and sustained professional learning …

Redefining “Back To Basics:” Critical Place-Based Education As Essential Practice, Jeffrey Austin, Rosalyn D. Shahid Oct 2026

Redefining “Back To Basics:” Critical Place-Based Education As Essential Practice, Jeffrey Austin, Rosalyn D. Shahid

Michigan Reading Journal

This article explores how an environmental justice-centered summer program in Wayne County, Michigan, one of the areas most impacted by environmental harm in the United States, uses storytelling, critical place-based education practices, teen advocacy frameworks and local curriculum development to push back on current “back-to-basics” education mandates, including scripted curriculum, skills-dominant instruction, and decontextualized learning.  Using the MAISA GELN Disciplinary Literacy Essentials: Grades 6-12 as a guide, we attempt to redefine what ought to be seen as “basic” in schools to ensure that students can be a meaningful part of building a more just, equitable, and sustainable future for our …

Reading With Dad: A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of Fathers’ Literacy Practices In China And The United States, Wei Gu Oct 2026

Reading With Dad: A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of Fathers’ Literacy Practices In China And The United States, Wei Gu

Michigan Reading Journal

Family literacy research has often centered on mothers, with fathers’ roles receiving comparatively less attention, particularly in studies that examine family literacy across cultural contexts. This study, comparing the literacy practices of fathers with young children in China and the United States, explores cultural patterns of paternal family literacy engagement. The article reveals the relationship between father and child demographic characteristics (age, education, income, child age, number of children, and child gender) and fathers’ literacy involvement in two countries. Using a survey instrument administered to 500 fathers (250 in the United States and 250 in China), the study analyzes fathers’ …

Connecting The Pieces: Designing A Community-Engaged Family Literacy Program, Margaret O. Hanna, Janet Oyebode

Michigan Reading Journal

In this article, the authors describe how they designed a place-based family literacy program using several research-backed practices from the K-3 Literacy Essential Practices. The authors, one teacher educator and one community practitioner, describe how their interactions with the community guided them to a theme and authentic purpose for the program and how they chose a robust set of thematically connected texts for shared reading. They will also share how they identified an ideal community partner whose expertise enhanced their curriculum and helped to shape the authentic purpose and audience for the final project of the program. Finally, they …

The Anatomy And Physiology Of Signed Language Articulation, Leah C. Geer Oct 2026

The Anatomy And Physiology Of Signed Language Articulation, Leah C. Geer

Society for American Sign Language Journal

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) receive extensive training in the anatomy and physiology of the oral speech and swallowing mechanisms. However, SLPs who serve individuals using a signed language like American Sign Language (ASL) may struggle to apply their training to appropriately assess and treat signed language productions in such students. Similarly, signed language specialists often lack foundational clinical knowledge to work effectively in the context of signed production. This article provides a detailed anatomical exploration of the primary sign language articulators, highlighting parallels between oral and manual articulators. SLPs learn in graduate school which speech sounds typically emerge at what ages …

Stuttering-Like Behaviors In Asl: Clinical Position Paper On Assessment Considerations And Recommendations, Jody Cripps, Mark W. Pellowski Oct 2026

Stuttering-Like Behaviors In Asl: Clinical Position Paper On Assessment Considerations And Recommendations, Jody Cripps, Mark W. Pellowski

Society for American Sign Language Journal

Assessment of stuttering like behaviors in signed language among deaf individuals will be discussed in this paper. Several assessments have been developed over the years that evaluate deaf children’s American Sign Language (ASL) proficiency, which is a very important undertaking for this population. However, there has been very little discussion in the literature regarding the specific diagnostic tools used to evaluate deaf children’s signed language disorders and dysfluency, such as specific signed language impairment (SSLI) and signed stuttering (Cripps et al., 2016a & b). Although some American deaf children have been ‘informally’ diagnosed with SSLI (e.g., Quinto-Pozos et al., 2011, …

Asl Proficiency Outcomes: Comparing In-Person And Online Instructions, Stephen B. Fitzmaurice Oct 2026

Asl Proficiency Outcomes: Comparing In-Person And Online Instructions, Stephen B. Fitzmaurice

Society for American Sign Language Journal

This study examined whether American Sign Language (ASL) proficiency outcomes differ between in-person and online instructional modes using a standardized external assessment. Twenty-eight undergraduate students who completed 44 credit hours of ASL coursework at a southeastern U.S. university were assessed using the American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI). Students were divided into two groups based on graduation cohort: those who completed all coursework in-person (n = 15) and those who completed at least four courses online (n = 13). Results revealed significantly higher ASLPI scores for in-person students (M = 2.47, SD = 0.48) compared to online students (M = …
