Introduction: Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is a major cause of maternal morbidity and mortality. Timely prediction may prevent adverse maternal outcomes, and efforts are needed to develop accurate predictive tools. A high-performing machine learning model to predict PPH using data from the US Consortium for Safe Labor (CSL) remains to be widely validated in contemporary clinical settings using electronic health record (EHR) data. Our goal was to evaluate the performance of the CSL PPH predictive model using EHR data across a large healthcare system in the Northeastern United States.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study across eight hospitals in the …

Exposing The Work Of The Market Through The Case Of Alternative Provision For English School Students, Nick Pratt, Elizabeth Done, Sam Morahan Jan 2026

Exposing The Work Of The Market Through The Case Of Alternative Provision For English School Students, Nick Pratt, Elizabeth Done, Sam Morahan

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

Pupils in England who for some reason are not able to attend school often find themselves in Alternative Provision (AP). These are special arrangements designed to address their specific needs and help them return to mainstream schooling. AP involves a financial agreement between the provider and the organisation that commissions the provision and thus operates as an explicit form of education market in which educational services are traded directly for financial recompense. We report on a case study of one AP provider in the South-West of England undertaken over a one-year period which generated data through individual, semi-structured interviews and …

The Urgent Need for a Shift from Crisis Intervention to Prevention. As highlighted by the Chief Medical Officer, demographic ageing—particularly acute in coastal areas like Cornwall—necessitates a fundamental shift in care models to allow individuals to live as independently as possible. Currently, the potential of digital technologies to support this aim is not being realised. To maintain wellbeing and reduce demand on statutory services, the system must pivot from reactive crisis management to a greater focus on prevention. While technology can play a pivotal role, it will only succeed if integrated into interoperable, data-driven systems that facilitate early intervention and …

E-Profits: A Business-Aligned Evaluation Metric For Profit-Sensitive Customer Churn Prediction, Awais Manzoor, M. Atif Qureshi, Etain Kidney, Luca Longo

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Retention campaigns in customer relationship management often rely on churn prediction models evaluated using traditional metrics such as AUC and F1-score. However, these metrics fail to reflect financial outcomes and may mislead strategic decisions. We introduce e-Profits, a novel business-aligned evaluation metric that quantifies model performance based on customer lifetime value, retention probability, and intervention costs. Unlike existing profit-based metrics such as Expected Maximum Profit, which assume fixed population-level parameters, e-Profits uses Kaplan–Meier survival analysis to estimate tenure-conditioned (customer-level) one-period retention probabilities and supports granular, per-customer profit evaluation. We benchmark six classifiers across two telecom datasets (IBM Telco and Maven …

Post: Pruning Oriented Security For Inversion Attack In Edge-Based Internet Of Things, Sunder Ali Khowaja, Abi Waqas, Mohammad Tabrez Quasim, Kapal Dev

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

With the recent emergence of artificial intelligence (AI), edge users in industries and manufacturing have been extensively using AI-based services, which pose privacy and security risks to data. Distributed learning approaches deployed in the manufacturing industries help reduce data risks. However, traditional approaches cannot handle deep models as well as the scalability of edge-based internet of things (E-IoT) devices, especially in the manufacturing sector. Studies have proposed SplitFed learning (SFL) by combining split learning and the federated learning paradigm, but they fail to achieve an optimal trade-off between communication and computational limitations and are vulnerable to inversion attacks. We present …

Increased pulmonary vascular pressures due to vascular remodeling, elevated vascular resistance, and vasoconstriction characterize Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH). The narrowing of the pulmonary arteries and obstruction of blood flow increase the Right Ventricular (RV) afterload, forcing the RV to undergo structural and functional changes. While adaptive remodeling leads to RV compensation by maintaining function, maladaptive remodeling leads to RV decompensation, characterized by worsening function and eventual failure. At present, there is no effective treatment for these patients as therapies for left ventricular failure are ineffectual, and there are no therapies specifically targeting the RV. Therefore, there is a clear need …

Blood Flow Regulates Metabolism In Hematopoietic Development, Pamela L Wenzel Jan 2026

Blood Flow Regulates Metabolism In Hematopoietic Development, Pamela L Wenzel

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Blood flow modifies oxygen availability and biomechanical forces within the vasculature of the embryo as the hematopoietic system develops. The aorta-gonad-mesonephros (AGM) envelops the largest artery in the body and is a critical site for the emergence of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). Herein, I discuss the role of hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) and force as determinants of metabolism and fate determination. To address the effects of blood flow on hematopoietic development, I employ mouse embryo models and biomimetic culture. Real-time cell metabolic analyses show that oxygen consumption rates (OCR) and extracellular acidification rates (ECAR) are altered by flow in cultures of …

Periodontitis is a biofilm-induced chronic inflammatory disease, characterized by gingival inflammation and alveolar bone loss. According to a national survey, approximately half of the U.S. adults are affected by periodontal disease. To effectively prevent and treat periodontitis, it is essential to address its underlying causes. The primary etiological factors include polymicrobial synergy and dysbiosis of the oral microbiota, and a dysregulated immune response. The standard therapeutic approach, mechanical removal of biofilm through debridement, sometimes demonstrates limited efficacy, particularly in cases of severe periodontitis, which may require adjunctive or additional therapy. This study evaluates the efficacy of the Digital Clock and Recall (DCR™)-a rapid, FDA-listed digital cognitive assessment-to crosswalk to MMSE scores using machine learning, thereby offering a faster, scalable, and equitable mechanism for patient triage.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis using data from the multi-site Bio-Hermes-001 (BH) study ( …
