Department of Sleep Medicine Faculty Papers
Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common yet underrecognized neurological disorder characterized by uncomfortable sensations and an irresistible urge to move he legs, typically following a circadian pattern. RLS frequently co-occurs with various other neurological diseases, raising questions about shared mechanisms and clinical consequences. This review synthesizes evidence on the prevalence, outcomes, and pathophysiology of RLS in various neurological disorders, including Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, migraine, dementia, stroke, epilepsy, and peripheral neuropathy. In Parkinson's disease, RLS is linked to disease progression and dopaminergic therapy. In stroke and multiple sclerosis, RLS is associated with structural lesions at specific locations, such as …
Investigation Of New Surfaces For Pressure Injury Prevention, Jeremy Choh
Investigation Of New Surfaces For Pressure Injury Prevention, Jeremy Choh
Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study
Pressure injuries remain as a large challenge for the health care industry with hospitals responsible for more than half of the pressure injuries cases. [1] Current methods for pressure injury prevention are labor intensive or expensive. The use of hydrogels and diaelectric materials with reversible mechanical properties were investigated to generate 32 mm Hg pressure relief for pressure injury prevention. However, it was determined that the mechanical properties of these materials were inefficient in mechanical strength, activation time, or activation energy to be suitable for health care purposes. The use of low intensity ultrasound therapy was studied instead. A single …

Intravital imaging studies have provided insights into the spatial and temporal variations of platelet activation and thrombin generation that occur during hemostasis; however, these studies are generally limited to small vessels due to the practical limitations of imaging in thicker tissues. Recent advances in cleared tissue fluorescence imaging as well as volume electron microscopy (vEM) coupled with machine learning-based image segmentation provide an opportunity for analysis of the 3-dimensional structure of complex tissues. We utilized these technologies to examine hemostatic plugs from murine jugular veins and carotid arteries to investigate the spatial distribution of platelet activation and biochemical responses in …

Coronary artery disease is often treated with vascular stents to restore the blood flow. Recently, there has been growing interest in biodegradable metal stents, especially those made from magnesium (Mg). This review starts by explaining the complex pathophysiology of atherosclerosis and the current treatment options. It then discusses stents, including their potential benefits, capabilities, and limitations, as they represent the gold standard for percutaneous coronary intervention in treating atherosclerosis. Given the vital role of stents, we provide a thorough review of the manufacturing techniques involved, such as wire forming, subtractive manufacturing, and additive manufacturing, with a specific focus on stents …

Sensation-Suppression Theory: A New Explanation For Fibromyalgia Syndrome And Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (Me/Cfs), Michael E. Hyland
School of Psychology
Explanations and treatment of fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) and myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) are controversial, and outcomes are poor. This paper describes sensation-suppression theory, a theory modelled on self-organizing control systems that are capable of adaptation in response to inputs and used in applications of artificial intelligence. The theory shows how the need to suppress inflammatory and other causes of pain or fatigue due to challenging circumstances sensitizes the neurological processing of pain and fatigue, thereby creating the amplified sensations and abnormal cognitions of central sensitivity syndromes. These syndromes are caused by errors in an evolutionarily early behavior-control mechanism of …

Background: Antarctic marine food webs are expected to be significantly impacted by future climate change. In particular, the recent rapid regional warming in the West Antarctic Peninsula has, and will continue to have, a negative impact on endemic marine biodiversity. However, despite the growing recognition of the role microbial symbionts play in mediating responses to environmental change, microbiome characterisation has been conducted for only a small fraction of the marine invertebrates in the Southern Ocean. Our study examined the effects of feeding guild, seasonality, and experimental warming (6 months at + 2 °C) on the gut microbiome of six species …

High-Surface-Area Ficus Leaf-Extracted Cuo-Zno-Nio Ternary Nanocomposites For Rapid Adsorption-Assisted Uv-A Degradation Of Direct Blue 15, Kafa’A H. Ali, Mohammed A. Atiya, Ahmed K. Hassan
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
Direct Blue 15 (DB15) is a long-lasting synthetic dye that pollutes water and is difficult to remove during wastewater treatment. Conventional treatments fail to remove DB15 adequately due to rapid electron-hole recombination, which necessitates photocatalysts with reduced recombination rates for effective dye removal. The study aims to synthesize and evaluate a CuO-ZnO-NiO ternary system as an integrated adsorption and UV-A photocatalysis platform for DB15 removal. Ficus leaf-extracted CuO-ZnO-NiO nanocomposites with four Cu:Zn:Ni ratios (1:1:1, 1:1:2, 1:2:1, 2:1:1) were prepared by co-precipitation, followed by extensive chemical and physical characterization and dye-removal performance measurements. The CuO-ZnO-NiO nanocomposite exhibited hexagonal zinc oxide, cubic …

Developing Antibodies Against Galectin-3 And Galectin-9 To Target Endometriosis, Ashleigh Burger, Noah Farnsworth, Jared J. Reisnouer, Cheyenne Vue
2026 Symposium
Endometriosis is a disease characterized by pelvic pain and the formation of endometrial-like tissue on the outside of the uterine lining. This condition affects nearly 10% of women across the globe and confirming whether someone has endometriosis requires visualization in surgery. While the specific causes of this disease remain unclear, the over-expression of the Galectins 3 and 9 in ectopic endometrial tissues suggests a role in the development and maintenance of the condition. Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are highly specific proteins with potential as diagnostic or treatment tools. The goal of this study is to generate antibodies against Gal3 and Gal9. …

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
An adult female patient presented with a pronounced maxillary dental midline deviation and localized crowding in the upper right quadrant, particularly involving the canine and second molar. The maxillary right canine was buccally erupted and overlapped the lateral incisor and first premolar due to insufficient arch space and unfavorable root proximity. The mandibular arch exhibited mild anterior crowding with a flat curve of Spee. Orthodontic treatment was initiated using preadjusted fixed appliances. Extraction of the maxillary right third molar was performed to allow immediate sequential distalization of the maxillary right molars. A bypassed-canine main archwire in combination with a temporary …

The Living Memory System: A Framework For Transforming Death Care Infrastructure Into A Perpetual Relational Ecosystem For Memory Preservation, Family Continuity, And Citizen-Governed Memorial Stewardship, Joseph Jm Walker
Defensive Publications Series
The death care industry operates under structural conditions that systematically disadvantage grieving families through information asymmetry, compressed decision timelines, relationship termination at the point of transaction, fragmented archival systems, and the absence of citizen-governed transparency standards. Simultaneously, the digital era has created a second layer of fragmentation in which human lives generate vast quantities of meaningful material that remains structurally disconnected from permanent physical memorial locations and inaccessible across generations.
This disclosure presents the Living Memory System — a modular, globally applicable framework repositioning memorial infrastructure from a primarily transactional service category into a long-term continuity ecosystem serving families, communities, …

Myocardin-Dependent Regulation Of Adam12 And Adam19 Promotes Fibronectin Fibrillogenesis During Pleural Fibrosis, Uday Siva Naga Sankar Allamneni
Biotechnology Theses
Pleural fibrosis involves excessive extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition driven by chronic injury and inflammation. Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) induces mesothelial–mesenchymal transition (MesoMT), promoting a myofibroblast phenotype. Our laboratory identified myocardin (Myocd), a transcriptional coactivator, as a key mediator of MesoMT that regulates ECM-remodeling proteases. RNA-seq and qPCR analyses showed that ADAM12 and ADAM19 are upregulated by TGF-β but suppressed by Myocd knockdown in Human pleural mesothelial and IPF-derived cells. Silencing ADAM12 reduced fibrotic markers, including fibronectin and smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), whereas ADAM19 showed relatively minor effects. ADAM12 knockdown also impaired fibronectin fibrillogenesis and insoluble matrix assembly, as confirmed by …

An Analysis Of Pass Neurocognitive Processing Profiles On The Using The Cas-2 Standardization Sample, Danielle Lacey
ETD Collection
Cognitive assessments have long played a pivotal role in advancing our understanding of human intelligence. Serving as cornerstones for measuring cognitive abilities, IQ tests provide essential insights that inform educational and psychological interventions. This study builds upon Naglieri’s (2000) research examining cognitive processing using the original Cognitive Assessment System (CAS) by conducting a similar analysis with standardization data from the CAS-2. Grounded in PASS theory, the CAS-2 was designed to assess cognitive processes rather than acquired knowledge. Its research emphasizes intra-individual variations in cognitive functioning and offers a process-oriented alternative to traditional, content-based intelligence tests. This approach promotes a more …
