Transcranial Ac Modulation Of Cerebellar Nuclear Activity In Awake Animals, Nuran Kavakli
Transcranial Ac Modulation Of Cerebellar Nuclear Activity In Awake Animals, Nuran Kavakli
Dissertations
Entrainment of cerebellar nuclear (CN) cells via cerebellar transcranial alternating current stimulation (ctACS) has been reported in animals under ketamine/xylazine anesthesia. Our main objective was to demonstrate modulation of CN activity in unanesthetized, freely moving animals using ctACS. Multi-channel carbon-fiber electrodes were implanted into the interpositus nucleus for recording multi-unit (MU) activity, and thin-film electrodes were implanted subcutaneously over the posterior cerebellum for stimulation. A frequency-domain-based metric was developed to quantify modulation from MU signals. The results demonstrated modulation in a wide range of frequencies (4 Hz-300 Hz) as in anesthetized animals. In contrast, the amplitude of the peak in …

Tissue engineering is widely used in research for investigating cellular proliferation, behavior, and responses to various stimuli. However, the predictive value of preclinical studies using cell culture plates is limited by the inability to recapitulate the complexity of the physiological microenvironment. Synthetic three-dimensional (3D) scaffolds can be engineered to mimic the complex morphology of the extracellular matrix of native tissues and can serve as physiologically relevant platforms for preclinical studies. In this study, 3D electrospun scaffolds were characterized to aid in breast cancer research. Unlike previous studies that focused primarily on scaffold fabrication or cell viability, this work systematically evaluates …
Culturally Competent Nurse-Led Education To Reduce Delayed Diagnosis And Increase Awareness Of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome In Reproductive-Aged South Asian Women, Madeeha Syeda
Honors College Theses
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common condition that affects hormones in women, especially in their 20s and 30s. Symptoms of PCOS include irregular periods, abnormal hair growth, acne, obesity, hyperpigmentation of the skin, cysts, skin tags, thinning hair, and infertility (Newin, 2023). While the exact cause of PCOS is unknown, it is linked to insulin resistance, higher levels of androgens, and low-grade inflammation (Newin, 2023). In regards to complications, PCOS can increase risk for gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, preterm term, and C-section deliveries. In terms of treatment, there is no cure but early diagnosis is key to reducing symptoms (Newin, …
Evaluation Of Medical Instrument Reliability For The Heath And Maddox Components Of The Accommodative-Vergence System, Jacob Chabuel
Evaluation Of Medical Instrument Reliability For The Heath And Maddox Components Of The Accommodative-Vergence System, Jacob Chabuel
Theses
Binocular vision relies on the coordination of near response triad composed in part by the vergence and accommodative systems. Binocular dysfunctions linked to these systems impact the quality of life of those affected by complicating day-to-day tasks and leading to further health concerns. Clinical evaluations that diagnose dysfunctions and tailor therapies rely on subjective methods, creating a need for a reliable, quantitative, measurement tool. This is achieved using a haploscope, a tool that quantitatively measures and observes binocular vision to identify deficiencies within the eye. Modernization of a haploscope system, measurement of the Heath and Maddox components of the visual …

Investigation Of Environmental Influences On Multiple Sclerosis: A Study For Egypt’S Health, Noha Ezzaldin Alziny Ali
Theses and Dissertations
Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a complex, chronic neuroinflammatory disease influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. While global research has identified potential environmental influences, most evidence comes from Western populations, creating a significant knowledge gap for regions like Egypt, which has witnessed a dramatic rise in MS prevalence over recent decades. This study hypothesized that Egyptian MS patients exhibit a distinct biological signature in their blood, characterized by an imbalance in essential and toxic trace elements (the metallome) and alterations in stress-response biomarkers associated with neuroaxonal injury and cellular stress. Objective: This study aimed to comprehensively profile and compare …

Trends Of Pediatric Psychotropic Polypharmacy In Massachusetts Before And During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Gianna D'Ambrozio
Trends Of Pediatric Psychotropic Polypharmacy In Massachusetts Before And During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Gianna D'Ambrozio
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
Youth in the U.S. and internationally are increasingly being diagnosed with depression and related psychiatric conditions (Murthy, 2021) many of whom are being subjected to non-evidence-based, or what has been termed irrational, psychotropic polypharmacy (Barnett & Concepcion Zayas, 2019). Psychotropic polypharmacy can be defined as “the use of 2 or more psychiatric medications in the same patient,” (Zito et al., 2021) though definitions can vary. Using data from the Center for Health Information Analysis’ Massachusetts All-Payer Claims Database, this study examined the sociodemographic factors associated with high rates of polypharmacy, a hypothesized increase in pediatric psychotropic polypharmacy rates in Massachusetts …
Pickleweed In The Disappearing Marsh: Population Genetics & Metal Accumulation In Salicornia Depressa, Alice Kaisla
Pickleweed In The Disappearing Marsh: Population Genetics & Metal Accumulation In Salicornia Depressa, Alice Kaisla
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
Salicornia is a genus of succulent halophytes found in salt marshes around the world. Salicornia species have a remarkably high tolerance for heavy metal pollution and have been shown to accumulate high concentrations of heavy metals in their tissue under experimental conditions. As a result, they are both a useful system for studying evolution in polluted coastlines and a potential candidate for use in phytoremediation. My research focuses on Salicornia depressa, known as pickleweed, a species commonly found in marshes along the heavily urbanized and industrialized New England coast. I investigate genetic diversity and population structure in S. depressa populations …

Static Data-Race Detection For Gpu Programs: Behavioral Types With Partial Completeness Guarantees, Zhen Rong Liew
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
GPUs are essential to modern computing but notoriously difficult to program correctly. Static analysis tools can verify data-race freedom, but their over-approximations produce spurious reports of data races that do not occur, limiting their practical usefulness. This dissertation establishes when Memory Access Protocols (MAPs), a compositional abstraction modeling memory access behavior between synchronization barriers, can be simultaneously sound and complete. We first prove that MAP-based analysis is sound and complete for well-typed Jaminan programs---those without data-dependent array indexing. This result establishes the theoretical boundary: completeness is achievable when data-dependent control flow and indexing are absent. Jaminan extends MAPs with symbolic …

Families’ insights into home language use, literacy routines, and cultural practices remain underexplored in early childhood education research.
The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore the HLLE of preschool-aged children in India and examine how families support early language and literacy development within multilingual home …
Small Molecule Antioxidants As Potential Therapeutics For Preeclampsia, Maxim Mastyugin
Small Molecule Antioxidants As Potential Therapeutics For Preeclampsia, Maxim Mastyugin
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
The major goal of this work was to develop a therapeutic intervention against preeclampsia (PE). Preeclampsia affects up to 5-7% of all pregnancies and has no causative treatments. It is associated with oxidative stress caused by a prolonged ischemic state and increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the placenta. The cardinal symptoms include high blood pressure, kidney dysfunction, and in severe cases, eclampsia. With no treatment for the underlying causes available, we offer small molecule antioxidants which may scavenge ROS in the placenta arising from the initiating event of PE, the oxidative stress. By reducing placental ROS, these antioxidants …
Computer-Aided Development Of Novel Antioxidants, Rita Bernadett Vlocsko
Computer-Aided Development Of Novel Antioxidants, Rita Bernadett Vlocsko
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
Physiological redox homeostasis is a fine balance between prooxidants and antioxidants that are integrated elements of several reduction-oxidation mechanisms at molecular, organellar, cellular and tissue levels. When this equilibrium is disrupted and prooxidants become dominant, the body relies on endogenous and exogenous antioxidants to counterbalance the dysregulation and ultimately prevent the progression of oxidative stress. Reactive species (reactive oxygen species, reactive nitrogen species, or reactive sulfur species) are significant contributors to prooxidant activity. Over the years, substantial knowledge has been accumulated regarding their origin and roles in disease development, leading to the discovery and development of antioxidants that effectively target …

Making Kinship With Plants And The Multiple Meanings Of Care In Amazonian Indigenous Gardens, Ana Gabriela Morim De Lima
Making Kinship With Plants And The Multiple Meanings Of Care In Amazonian Indigenous Gardens, Ana Gabriela Morim De Lima
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
This paper focuses on the bonds of kinship and care between humans, cultivated plants, and other-than-human beings in Indigenous gardens, myths, rituals, and shamanism, across Lowland South America. Drawing on Krahô ethnography and a review of ethnological literature, it highlights the contributions of Americanist ethnology to wider debates about multispecies relation, particularly with regard to vegetal agency. By exploring the ambivalent meanings of care- such as “caring,” “raising,” and “nurturing,” as well as “being careful,” “having respect,” and “taking precautions”- I examine how kinship relations between humans and their cultivated plants are made through care and unmade through its absence …

Is Trimethylamine N-Oxide A Friend, Foe, Or Hormetic Agent In Patients With Parkinson’S Disease: A Focused Review Of One Microbial Metabolite, Abraham B. Alton
Student Works
This review synthesizes recent literature examining trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) synthesis and its potential role in Parkinson’s Disease (PD) pathology. An increase in TMAO plasma and CSF concentration is associated with PD progression and severity. TMAO biosynthesis is a two-step process. First, precursors including carnitine and choline are converted to trimethylamine (TMA) by gut microbes. Second, TMAO is oxidized to TMAO in the liver. Once absorbed into circulation TMAO crosses the blood brain barrier and may influence PD disease pathology by increasing neuroinflammation and astrocyte activation and damaging the cerebral lymphatic system. These mechanisms may contribute to the cognitive and motor …

On The Brink Of Silence: Ethnographic Perspectives On Hunting And Forest Life Among The Awa Guajá In Eastern Amazonia, Uirá Garcia
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
The central theme of this article basically resides in the relationship established by indigenous peoples between their hunting practices and the forest. Indigenous ways of connecting ‘hunting’ and ‘forest’ necessarily pass through other modes of knowing, only marginally – if it all – dependent on vision. On the contrary, sounds, smells and even dreams are, for many South American indigenous collectives, more trustworthy indices than what the eye sees. This article divides into two parts. In the first, I set out the main ideas related to the anthropological study of hunting in Amazonia at a conceptual level. In the second, …

A Call To Action: Towards A Compendium For Culturally Responsive And Inclusive Pain Management, Arvie Vitente, Rob Sweet, Lester Jones
Philippine Journal of Physical Therapy
Introduction: Pain is a pervasive global health problem, yet its assessment and management remain shaped by biomedical, monolingual, and culturally narrow assumptions that do not fully reflect the lived realities of diverse populations. Although contemporary pain science recognizes pain as a personal experience influenced by biological, psychological, and social factors, inequities persist across racial, ethnic, linguistic, and cultural groups.
Main Body: These inequities affect how pain is expressed, interpreted, documented, and treated, particularly among Indigenous peoples, migrants, refugees, and patients with limited English proficiency. In this perspective, we call for the development of a comprehensive compendium on culturally responsive and …
