Neuroenvironmental Footprint: Integrating Air Quality Into Neuroarchitectural Research In Educational Spaces, María Beltrán Rodríguez, Ivette Caldelas
Congresos y Conferencias
Environmental quality is widely recognised as one of the most decisive factors in public health. Its relevance is particularly critical in the case of children, as it directly affects both their physical and cognitive development. Indeed, different researches showed how the exposure to inadequate environmental conditions during early life stages may compromise health outcomes, learning capacity, and overall well-being. Consequently, improving environmental quality in educational settings is not only a matter of comfort, but an essential public health priority. In this context, the International Symposium of Environmental Quality in Educational Spaces (inSiEqES) emerges as a necessary initiative to foster dialogue, …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Dietary strategies are increasingly recognized as important modulators of breast cancer outcomes, acting through effects on metabolic regulation, weight management, hormone signalling, immune function, and the gut microbiome. However, breast cancer heterogeneity and inter-individual variability mean that generic dietary guidelines may not fully capture patient needs. Precision nutrition offers the opportunity to align dietary interventions with tumour subtype, treatment context, and host biology, potentially enhancing therapeutic response and survivorship in patients diagnosed with breast cancer. In this narrative review, we summarize evidence on dietary patterns and prognosis, and explore how targeted interventions, including fasting regimens, ketogenic diets, and caloric restriction, …

Background: Osteosarcopenia—the coexistence of osteopenia/osteoporosis and sarcopenia—is associated with numerous adverse health outcomes, but its association with intrinsic capacity (IC) remains unknown. We aimed to explore the associations of osteosarcopenia with IC and all-cause mortality in older adults. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of IC and a prospective analysis of all-cause mortality in 1142 participants from the Toledo Study for Healthy Aging (75.1 ± 6.0 years, 53.1% women). Participants were classified as having no musculoskeletal disorders, osteopenia/osteoporosis, sarcopenia, or osteosarcopenia (DXA- and EWGSOP2-based criteria). IC was operationalized as a composite score integrating locomotion, cognition, psychological, vitality, and sensory domains. …

A discouraging increase in diabetes-related nontraumatic lower-extremity amputations (NLEA) has occurred over the last decade. Individuals with diabetic neuropathy (DMPN) and CKD are at the highest risk for NLEA. Despite the critical implications, little is known about the factors that initiate the cascade of events leading to NLEA, limiting early and effective interventions. We aimed to develop and implement a technique for quantifying metatarsal bone density and microstructure using HR-pQCT. Twelve participants were enrolled:

Successful generation of high-quality spatial transcriptomics data from murine musculoskeletal tissues has been impeded by the challenge of preserving RNA integrity through the harsh tissue processing steps required for histological sectioning. In particular, the need to thoroughly fix and decalcify mineralized tissues has proven problematic. We detail a comprehensive sample processing pipeline for 3 common murine musculoskeletal tissue samples, enabling high-quality transcript detection via imaging-based spatial transcriptomics using the Xenium Prime 5K platform from 10x Genomics. Our protocol outlines methodological details for transcardiac perfusion, fixation, decalcification, paraffin processing, and a sample co-embedding strategy facilitating anatomically consistent and simultaneous sectioning of …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This paper is a decolonising, Indigenous qualitative inquiry that integrates elements of critical autoethnography, narrative methods and conceptual analysis to explore how Peruvian Andean cosmology can inform contemporary systems thinking and family therapy practice. Writing as a mestiza, a Peruvian migrant in Australia, the author traces the lived experience of cultural erosion within Western, individualistic contexts and her reconnection with ancestral Andean teachings. These teachings—rooted in reciprocity, ecological attachment, collective responsibility and relational balance—are presented as living epistemologies that offer timely contributions to working therapeutically. The author examines core Andean concepts including ayll (kinship-based community), ayni (sacred reciprocity), Yachay (aprenderes …

Blue carbon ecosystems (BCEs), including mangroves, salt marshes, and seagrasses, play a critical role in climate mitigation due to their high carbon sequestration capacity. Despite Africa's extensive and diverse coastal ecosystems, continent-wide assessments of blue carbon stocks and accumulation rates remain scarce. Here, we synthesized blue carbon data from 87 publications (January 1993 - March 2026) to evaluate the current state of knowledge and regional variability. Our analysis reveals marked regional heterogeneity in sediment organic carbon (SOC) stocks across Africa, reflecting both ecological variability and methodological differences among studies. Normalised to a sediment depth of 1 m, median SOC stocks …

Introduction: The extent to which non-pathological aging influences plasma biomarkers remains unclear. Here, we investigate factors influencing plasma p-tau217 levels in cognitively unimpaired (CU), amyloid-beta–negative (Aβ-) individuals. Methods: Plasma p-tau217 was measured in CU Aβ- positron emission tomography–negative (PET-) participants using two immunoassays (ALZpath n = 360 and LUMIPULSE G1200 n = 73). Associations between p-tau217 and age groups (60–69, 70–79, and 80+ years), apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotype, and gender were evaluated. Results: ALZpath plasma p-tau217 showed a non-pathological age-related increase (p < 0.001), and increased percentage within the intermediate zone with age. Lumipulse p-tau217 showed an increase in the percentage of subjects with positive results with age, however, this trend was not significant (p > 0.05). Men had higher levels of p-tau217 only with the ALZpath assay (p = 0.02; Lumipulse: p = …

Introduction: Variants in the aquaporin-4 gene (AQP4) have been associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) diagnosis, cognition, and brain amyloid beta (Aβ) and may affect the sleep and Aβ relationship. Their association with other AD-related phenotypes/disease progression remain largely unknown. Methods: Associations between AQP4 variants, self-reported sleep measures, and AD-related phenotypes in cognitively unimpaired individuals with evidence of Aβ accumulation were examined using data from the Australian Imaging, Biomarkers and Lifestyle study. Results: AQP4 variants were directly associated with regional brain volumes, atrophy, and cognition. They were also associated with differences in regional brain volumes and atrophy in interaction with sleep …

Control And Entrainment Of Oscillatory Dynamics In An Oncolytic Virus–Tumor Model Under Periodic Therapy Forcing, Aya Salaheddin Shujrawi
Theses
This thesis investigates the dynamics of a tumour–virus interaction model under sinusoidal periodic viral injection, using the three-compartment ordinary differential equation framework of Baabdulla and Hillen (2024). The aim is to characterise how the frequency and amplitude of periodic injection interact with the system's intrinsic oscillatory dynamics, and to identify conditions for stable frequency entrainment. Equilibrium and Hopf bifurcation analysis of the autonomous system yields a supercritical bifurcation at θ_H^auto ≈ 338.45 with intrinsic frequency Ω0auto ≈ 0.7552. Introducing a constant baseline injection u0 = 0.05 raises the threshold to θHforced ≈ 364.85 and shifts …

Selama Ibu Dan Bayi Aman: Lotus Birth Dan Negosiasi Keselamatan Dalam Praktik Kebidanan Di Indonesia, Dyah Pratitasari
Antropologi Indonesia
This article reads lotus birth—the practice of leaving the umbilical cord intact until it separates naturally—as an ethnographic event that illuminates how biomedical power operates in contemporary Indonesian midwifery. Drawing on reflexive ethnography of two births attended by the author as a doula—one at a maternity clinic in South Tangerang (2020) and one at a home birth in South Jakarta (2022)—the article argues that the phrase "as long as mother and baby are safe" does not function as a neutral condition. Rather, it operates as Gramscian hegemonic common sense: appearing self-evident and beyond question, while simultaneously determining which …

Dancing In The Wake | Like Moss Over Modernity, Simple Ant
Black Educology Mixtape "Journal"
This offering is a meditation on existing and thriving in the wake of civilization. For centuries, we have educated one another to believe in, and glorify, the insatiable desires of our modern way of life. I begin with the premise that what we call “civilization” is a system predicated on death, violence, and exploitation, because it requires the endless extraction and consumption of the living Earth. Living in this way guts the Earth to feed our ideas of “progress” and “prosperity.” The effect now is that our civilization, our society, our way of life is rotting—bringing with it decay and …

Non-Reformist Reforms In Environmentalism: Legal Theory And Praxis, Nicholas F. Stump
Non-Reformist Reforms In Environmentalism: Legal Theory And Praxis, Nicholas F. Stump
Pace Environmental Law Review
This Article explores how non-reformist reforms—as opposed to traditional environmental law—are required for ecologically transformative futures. Traditional environmental law is a critically flawed regime due to its embeddedness in our current ecological political economy, which functionally requires perpetual accumulation and growth. However, this accumulation- and growth-based paradigm is incompatible with the material realities of our planetary boundaries. This paradigm has thus engendered our current era of profound ecological crisis (i.e., as associated with notions of the Anthropocene).
Non-reformist reforms are an alternative framework that can help drive transformations of our ecological political economy vis-à-vis building and operationalizing people power from …
Improving Transition To Adult Care: Assessing Health Insurance Literacy In Adolescent Patients With Congenital Heart Disease, Kaitlyn V. Mudge
Improving Transition To Adult Care: Assessing Health Insurance Literacy In Adolescent Patients With Congenital Heart Disease, Kaitlyn V. Mudge
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
Background: With advances in surgery and medical management, 95% of children with congenital heart disease (CHD) survive into adulthood. Transition to adult care is an intricate process. Up to 60% of adolescents fail to follow through with cardiology care, facing three times the risk of needing emergency services. Only 25% of young adults with CHD knew of the need to change their care to an adult provider and to acquire health insurance as an adult. One barrier to successful transition is a lack of insurance coverage and limited insurance health literacy. Higher insurance literacy is associated with increased utilization …

Edge Co-Occurrence Regularization For Node Classification, Kadir Altunel
Edge Co-Occurrence Regularization For Node Classification, Kadir Altunel
Theses
We propose a simple yet effective regularization technique for node classification on graphs that leverages edge-based label co-occurrence patterns. We first train an MLP on node features to produce class probability distributions, then compute a fixed penalty matrix from edge-based co-occurrence statistics of these predictions. This penalty matrix, which captures unlikely class combinations on connected nodes, is then used to regularize GNN training without further updates. We evaluate this approach across multiple homophilic datasets (Cora, CiteSeer, PubMed, ogbn-arxiv) and heterophilic benchmarks (Chameleon, Squirrel, Actor, Roman-Empire) using three GNN architectures: GCN, GraphSAGE, and H2GCN. Results show consistent improvements on homophilic graphs, …

Deep Learning Approaches For Ctenophore Identification And Tracking, Anagha Bharadwaj
Theses
Ctenophores are translucent marine organisms with nearly invisible tentacles and pose significant challenges due to their transparent morphology and ambiguous structural features. This research addresses the classification and tracking of these organisms and evaluates the performance of current computer vision models under sparse-data environments.
A dataset from the NJIT Life History Lab consisting of microscopic laboratory videos and photographs of different growth stages is used to train and assess a number of convolutional neural network designs, including VGG16, ResNet, BioCLIP2, YOLO, and DeepLabCut. Additionally, a web-based interface is developed to evaluate expert-labeled ground truth with the model's performance.
The findings …
Polarimetric Terahertz Imaging For The Measurement Of Birefringence In Plastic, Rachel Cohen
Polarimetric Terahertz Imaging For The Measurement Of Birefringence In Plastic, Rachel Cohen
Theses
Birefringence offers a promising way to observe stress concentration in materials such as glass and plastic, and thereby to identify weaknesses. Polarimetric imaging can be used to measure the birefringence of material, so long as the material is transparent to the light being used for the imaging. In this research, 2D Terahertz imaging was investigated as a means of measuring the birefringence of plastics that are opaque to visible light but transparent to THz radiation, for the eventual purpose of analyzing the residual stress present. In order to do so, two separate terahertz cameras were characterized for potential use in …
Retinomorphic Mid-Wave Infrared In-Sensor Processing Engine: Device-To-Architecture Co-Design, Hemalatha Nagaraju
Retinomorphic Mid-Wave Infrared In-Sensor Processing Engine: Device-To-Architecture Co-Design, Hemalatha Nagaraju
Theses
Conventional frame-based CMOS image sensors acquire full-frame pixel data at discrete time intervals, resulting in substantial spatial redundancy and loss of temporal information between frames. The repeated conversion and transfer of redundant pixel data increases bandwidth and power consumption in machine vision systems. Retinomorphic sensing architectures address these limitations by enabling programmable, analog-domain processing directly at the sensor interface. A compact behavioral model of the PbSe device is developed in HSPICE based on calibrated TCAD simulation data to capture gate-controlled photocurrent modulation under varying illumination and gate bias conditions. Error analysis is performed to quantify the deviation between TCAD-generated photocurrent …

Stunting remains the largest public health challenge among macro-nutrition problems in Indonesia, affecting almost a quarter of children under five in 2023. The prevalence is considered high according to the World Health Organization standard. This study analyzed 15 aggregated provincial variables from the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), focusing on determinants of stunting among children under two to identify primary intervention levers. Findings indicated that intervention urgency should focus on the first 1,000 days, particularly the steep increase in stunting prevalence observed in the 12–24-month age range. While the highest prevalence is in Eastern provinces (e.g., …

Perceptual And Geometric Advances In Crowd Simulation, Bilas Talukdar
Dissertations
Simulating realistic crowd motion remains a fundamental challenge in computer graphics and multi-agent systems, as it requires modeling both physically plausible interactions and perceptually natural behaviors. Existing crowd simulation methods typically employ simplified geometric abstractions, most commonly circular agent representations, and model navigation using either analytical interaction formulations (e.g., force, velocity, or constraint-based methods) or learned policies derived through reinforcement learning. Despite their effectiveness, these approaches often overlook detailed geometric structure and do not explicitly account for perceptual realism. This dissertation addresses these challenges by improving the realism of virtual crowd simulation through two key advancements: perceptual preference learning and …

Principles Of Privacy And Security In Artificial Intelligence And Applications, Khang Tran
Dissertations
Modern artificial intelligence (AI) systems have transformed critical domains such as healthcare, software engineering, finance, and the legal system. Despite their broad impact, concerns about trustworthiness, especially regarding privacy and security, remain major obstacles to wider adoption. Addressing these concerns requires both a systematic understanding of the privacy and security risks inherent in AI systems and the development of principled foundations for trustworthy AI that safeguard client privacy and security. This goal is particularly challenging because of the complexity of modern large-scale AI systems, the trade-offs between privacy and model utility, and the need to simultaneously ensure other important properties …

Mechanics And Physical Attributes Of Nature-Based Alterations: Rock Reinforcement And Urban Heat Island Assessment, Mary Chikondi Ngoma
Dissertations
Ground improvement is critical to geotechnical and geo-engineering systems, where modification of the properties of geomaterials (rocks and soils) is required to maintain stability and prevent failure of infrastructure installed within and around them. This need has become increasingly important with rapid urbanization and population growth, which intensify demands on surface and subsurface systems and further challenge the performance of supporting geomaterials. As a result, there is growing interest in nature-based solutions, particularly biologically mediated processes such as biocementation, which can enhance the physical, hydraulic, and mechanical properties of geomaterials while offering environmentally sustainable alternatives to conventional ground improvement techniques. …
Glass Transition Temperature Of Plga Nanoparticles And The Application In Drug Delivery, Guangliang Liu
Glass Transition Temperature Of Plga Nanoparticles And The Application In Drug Delivery, Guangliang Liu
Dissertations
The glass transition temperature (Tg) of poly(D,L-lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles plays a crucial role in governing molecular mobility, diffusion, and consequently, drug release kinetics. However, the interaction among residual surfactant, drug effect, nanoscale confinement, and release medium on Tg remains insufficiently characterized. This study aims to bridge this gap by correlating the thermal behavior of PLGA nanoparticles with their drug release behavior under physiologically relevant conditions.
In the present study, PLGA nanoparticles were synthesized using both nano-emulsion and surfactant-free nano-precipitation approaches. The influence of residual surfactants - poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DMAB) - was systematically …
