Background and aims: The terminology for hepatic steatosis and NAFLD was revised under the umbrella of steatotic liver disease, with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) as the primary subtype. MASLD is defined by hepatic steatosis plus at least 1 cardiometabolic risk factor. A new category, Met-ALD, describes MASLD with alcohol consumption below the defined thresholds for alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD). While adult studies have demonstrated strong concordance between NAFLD and MASLD, the applicability of this framework in children remains unclear.
Approach and results: We assessed children clinically diagnosed with NAFLD and enrolled in the NASH CRN who had available …

Total energy expenditure (TEE) is commonly modelled as the sum of resting energy expenditure (REE), activity energy expenditure (AEE), and diet-induced thermogenesis (DIT). This additive model has recently been challenged by the constrained energy balance model, which proposes that reductions in mass-adjusted REE compensate to some extent for increases in AEE, rendering mass-adjusted TEE effectively invariant. We tested these competing models using two complementary approaches. First, we conducted a short-term longitudinal, repeated-measures experiment in 12 adults who completed 10-day periods of high and low physical activity separated by a washout period. TEE was measured with doubly labelled water, AEE with …

Background: Interpretation of urine buprenorphine and norbuprenorphine concentrations is widely used to assess adherence during treatment for opioid use disorder. However, the relationships between dose, timing of sample collection, and metabolite ratios remain unclear, leading to potential misinterpretation in clinical practice.
Methods: Data were collected from patients on a psychiatry unit who were either inducted on or continued buprenorphine therapy and underwent urine testing for buprenorphine and its metabolite, norbuprenorphine. Urine samples were collected 16 to 786 min after the last buprenorphine dose. Norbuprenorphine-to-buprenorphine ratios were calculated. Data analysis using Python included polynomial regression and random forest models.

Background: Accurate segmentation of brain metastases (BM) is essential for diagnosis, stereotactic radiosurgery planning, and longitudinal assessment. However, manual contouring is time-intensive, limiting clinical scalability, and exhibits substantial inter-observer variability. This variability complicates objective assessment of automated segmentation methods and challenges interpretation of model performance.
Purpose: To address these limitations, we developed TUM-SAM, a hybrid foundation-model framework for fully automated BM segmentation, and introduced a bias-controlled, blinded multi-rater evaluation paradigm to determine whether AI-based BM segmentation has reached expert-level performance and whether AI-generated contours are preferred by human experts under unbiased assessment.
Methods: TUM-SAM integrates nnU-Net-based lesion detection with a …

Exposure-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the frontline treatment for pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), but not all youth fully respond to this treatment. While multiple factors may influence CBT response, homework adherence in CBT is a modifiable target that can improve treatment outcomes. This report examines the relationship between homework adherence and clinical outcomes in a large sample of youth with OCD who received exposure-based CBT. Here, 137 youth with OCD between 7 and 17 years old (M = 12.42, SD = 2.88) participated in a randomized controlled trial of exposure-based CBT. Homework adherence was monitored weekly, and OCD severity …

Background: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental disorder that may occur in the aftermath of severe psychological trauma. Epigenetic changes in the brain may play a critical role in understanding the neurobiology of PTSD by linking environmental traumatic stress exposure to lasting alterations in gene expression that shape neuronal function.
Methods: We examined 1,065,750 DNA methylation (DNAm) sites from 171 donors including neurotypical controls and PTSD and major depressive disorder (MDD) cases across 6 regions implicated in the fear circuitry of the brain. We performed RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) to examine changes in gene expression and linked these changes to …

Introduction: While antibiotics have been shown to increase the interval to delivery between rupture of membranes and delivery (latency) and improve neonatal outcomes after viable preterm prelabor rupture of membranes (PPROM), this has not been well investigated in the previable PPROM population. We aimed to investigate the association between antenatal antibiotics and latency following previable PPROM. Secondarily, we examined various maternal and neonatal outcomes. We hypothesized that the administration of antibiotics would prolong latency in pregnancies with previable PPROM.
Methods: Single-center retrospective cohort study that included pregnancies diagnosed with previable PPROM between 140/7 and 216/7 and delivered between 2012 and …

Polygenic risk scores (PRS) estimate individuals' genetic risk for developing multifactorial conditions. Recent genome-wide association studies have enabled development of psychiatric PRS, which hold potential to streamline diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric conditions. As individuals with mental illness often identify concern about passing on psychiatric conditions as a key factor in family planning, some may also seek to use psychiatric PRS in reproductive decisions like childbearing or embryo selection for in vitro fertilization. Despite calls for increased regulation, there remains no clinical consensus on the utility of psychiatric PRS in reproductive contexts. Therefore, we conducted semi-structured interviews of adults with …

Fire events impact soil carbon (C) and nutrient stocks immediately due to combustion of biomass and organic matter and set up additional post-fire changes to ecosystem inputs and losses. The literature on this topic is expanding rapidly as large and intense wildfires are increasingly affecting communities globally. However, many of these studies do not describe initial post-fire soil conditions adequately or consistently, nor do they link the impacts of fire on C and nutrient cycling to key soil properties and soil inputs, stocks and fluxes. Here we conduct a systematic analysis of 56 review- papers published in 2010 or later …

Genetics Of Cerebrotendinous Xanthomatosis, Jennifer Hanson, Penelope E Bonnen
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (CTX) is rare, autosomal recessive inborn error of metabolism caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in CYP27A1, which encodes sterile 27 hydroxylase, a key enzyme in bile acid biosynthesis. Enzyme deficiency results in reduced cholic and chenodeoxycholic acid synthesis with accumulation of cholestanol, bile acid intermediates, and bile alcohols, producing a progressive multisystem disorder characterized by chronic diarrhea, juvenile-onset cataracts, tendons xanthomas, and neurological dysfunction. Although CTX typically begins in childhood, diagnosis is frequently delayed until adulthood, limiting the benefit of effective disease modifying therapy with chenodeoxycholic acid. Since the identification of CYP27A1, more than 200 pathogenic variants have …

Biallelic pathogenic variants in PNPT1 cause combined oxidative phosphorylation deficiency 13 (COXPD13) (MIM #614932), linking mitochondrial dysfunction to type I interferon (IFN) activation through cytosolic leakage of mitochondrial double‐stranded RNA (mt‐dsRNA). This mechanism connects mitochondrial disease to interferonopathies such as Aicardi–Goutières syndrome (AGS). We describe a 7‐month‐old female infant with compound heterozygous PNPT1 variants presenting with severe hypotonia, feeding difficulties necessitating gastrostomy, dystonia, and elevated serum lactate. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated marked cerebellar, brainstem, and basal ganglia atrophy, with a lactate peak on MR spectroscopy (consistent with an inverted doublet). Serum immune profiling revealed a mild but elevated …

Background & aims: Most pediatric hepatocellular tumors are classified as hepatoblastoma (HB) or hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), yet a subset exhibits mixed histological and molecular features. These hepatoblastomas with carcinoma features (HBCs) include cases provisionally designated as hepatocellular neoplasm-not otherwise specified (HCN-NOS). Their biology remains poorly understood, with unresolved questions about their cellular composition and outcomes. It is unclear whether HBCs comprise hybrid cells with combined HB and HCC characteristics (HBC cells) or admixtures of distinct HB and HCC cells. We characterized the biology, etiology, cellular composition, and evolutionary dynamics of HBCs.
Methods: We performed multi-omics profiling - including single-nucleus RNA …

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection remains a leading global cause of advanced liver disease and imposes a substantial economic burden. Early prevention is critical, as perinatally acquired HBV carries a high risk of progression to cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Hepatitis B vaccination has been proven effective in preventing cancer, yet coverage of the complete vaccine series remains suboptimal. This implementation gap perpetuates the clinical burden, manifesting decades later as hepatic decompensation and liver cancer. This narrative review synthesizes the current HBV landscape, highlighting how gaps in vaccination policy and delivery contribute to real-world gastrointestinal outcomes. By reframing HBV vaccination …

Ontogenetic Variation In Palatal Morphology In Tufted And Untufted Capuchins, Valerie Contreras
Ontogenetic Variation In Palatal Morphology In Tufted And Untufted Capuchins, Valerie Contreras
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT Craniofacial variation and its relation to diet have been widely examined, but with less attention exclusively to the palate. Previous studies have shown that groups consuming a more resistant diet exhibit morphological differences in the craniofacial skeleton, including a longer and wider palate when compared to groups consuming a less resistant diet; similar patterns have been observed among captive vs. wild populations. Here, I present a 3D morphometric analysis of palatal ontogeny in tufted (Sapajus spp.) and untufted (Cebus spp.) capuchins and compare captive vs. free-ranging semi-provisioned Sapajus. Tufted capuchins are known to consume more mechanically resistant foods compared …
Valorization Of Rice Bran For Functional Film Fabrication Using Cold Plasma For Food Packaging And Biomedical Applications, Saydul Md Safwa
Valorization Of Rice Bran For Functional Film Fabrication Using Cold Plasma For Food Packaging And Biomedical Applications, Saydul Md Safwa
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Abstract Over the past few years, conventional plastic packaging materials have become increasingly concerned with their environmental impact. Therefore, the demand for bioplastics has been increasing significantly over the years. Rice milling, a process that modifies paddy rice into edible rice, generates by-products such as rice bran. Rice bran has cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and protein, which makes it a potential material for bioplastic fabrication. However, like most biodegradable films, rice bran films fall short when it comes to practical packaging applications. They often lack the strength, flexibility, moisture resistance, and barrier performance needed to compete with synthetic plastics. Most importantly, …
Identifying Muscle Health Deficits Among Older Adults With And Without Cognitive Impairment, Ray Guerreros Urbina
Identifying Muscle Health Deficits Among Older Adults With And Without Cognitive Impairment, Ray Guerreros Urbina
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Age-related declines in skeletal muscle health (SMH) and cognitive function are major contributors to disability, loss of independence, and reduced quality of life among older adults. Emerging evidence suggests that skeletal muscle and cognitive health may be interconnected through shared physiological mechanisms; however, the relationships between specific aspects of SMH and cognitive performance remain unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between SMH and cognitive performance among older adults and to determine whether SMH differs between cognitively healthy and cognitively impaired individuals after accounting for age and physical activity. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using …

Soil Moisture Regime Effects On Greenhouse Gas Emissions In A Native Tallgrass Prairie In The Ozark Highlands, Thomas William Dockery
Soil Moisture Regime Effects On Greenhouse Gas Emissions In A Native Tallgrass Prairie In The Ozark Highlands, Thomas William Dockery
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Ozark Highlands is an ecoregion in the mid-southern portion of the United States that is characterized by a mosaic of tallgrass prairies, oak (Quercus spp.) savannas, and oak-hickory (Carya spp.) forests, which represents a unique biophysical transition zone between the relatively dry grasslands of the west and the humid forests of the southeast. Quantifying greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, namely carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O), from natural, undisturbed ecosystems is critical to understanding atmospheric warming and climate-change implications. The objective of this study was to simultaneously evaluate CO2, CH4, and N2O emissions in an aquic and …

The study evaluates the impact of speculative activity on agricultural commodity returns, specifically in the corn, soybeans, rice, and oats markets. The study also analyzed the influence commodity returns have on speculative positions. Weekly data from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission were used as a proxy for speculative activity, and futures data were also retrieved from Barchart. Vector Autoregressive models and the Granger Causality tests were estimated to identify the relationships between returns and speculation. The paper found that speculative positions do not Granger-cause returns over the course of a week except for rice Tuesday results, which recorded a statistically …
Impact Of Baseline Cognition On Dual-Task Performance: Tracking Verbal Accuracy And Fluency In Adults At Risk For Alzheimer’S Disease, Rebecca Nicole Frederichs
Impact Of Baseline Cognition On Dual-Task Performance: Tracking Verbal Accuracy And Fluency In Adults At Risk For Alzheimer’S Disease, Rebecca Nicole Frederichs
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is increasing in prevalence as life expectancy continues to rise, highlighting the need for sensitive measures to detect early cognitive changes. This study examined the effects of baseline cognitive status on dual-task performance over time, in terms of dual-task cost, verbal fluency, and verbal accuracy in older adults at risk for AD. This study utilized a quantitative secondary analysis of the longitudinal dataset, the Digital, Cognitive, Multi-Domain Alzheimer Risk Velocity (DC-MARVel) study (Gray et al., 2022). Participants were categorized into low, medium, or high cognitive tertiles based on baseline Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status …
Human-Ai Collaboration For Operations And Supply Chain Management Decision Making, Finnegan Mckinley
Human-Ai Collaboration For Operations And Supply Chain Management Decision Making, Finnegan Mckinley
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Artificial Intelligence (AI) adoption continues to advance across supply chain management processes. A Gartner 2025 report shows that 84% of surveyed firms reported AI and machine learning investments for core supply chain tasks. However, both industry and academic literature highlight the importance of integrating AI and human judgment in decision making processes rather than fully automating with AI. The success of this integration depends heavily on the humans who use these AI tools. Therefore, this dissertation presents three essays that conceptually and empirical examine behavioral interactions between humans and AI in supply chain management decision making processes, primarily in the …

Historically, infections are subjectively associated with fatigue, a common yet poorly delineated syndrome. The impact on patient quality of life is the ultimate justification to evaluate fatigue in patients with infections. While fungal infections are subjectively associated with fatigue, there are minimal quantifiable fungal research outcomes that evaluate histoplasmosis and fatigue.
Fraud And Focus: Examining Self-Control Strategies In Students Experiencing Impostor Phenomenon, Francesca Angela Catalano
Fraud And Focus: Examining Self-Control Strategies In Students Experiencing Impostor Phenomenon, Francesca Angela Catalano
Theses and Dissertations
Impostor phenomenon (IP) is a common experience among individuals in achievement contexts characterized largely by feelings of self-doubt, attributions of success that focus on external factors, and beliefs that one is “fooling” others about their competence. Current research suggests the effects of IP are complex (e.g., IP is associated with higher grade point average and productivity but also self-handicapping, psychological distress, and difficulties adjusting to college). To better understand these complex effects, this study proposes a self-control perspective for IP, where this phenomenon is seen as involving additional self-control burdens. Specifically, the study examines whether IP is associated with grade …
