Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers
PURPOSE: Tumor treating fields (TTFields) are FDA-approved for supratentorial glioblastoma, but feasibility in infratentorial tumors remains poorly defined. This simulation study evaluated TTFields dose in brainstem gliomas using patient-specific modeling with scalp-only transducer arrays.
METHODS: MRI and CT imaging from seven patients with brainstem gliomas were used for TTFields planning with MAXPOINT® (Novocure, Switzerland). Clinical target volume (CTV) was defined as enhancing tumor on T1 post-contrast MRI (Gross tumor volume, GTV) plus a 3 mm peritumoral expansion. The platform optimized scalp-only array layouts, and finite element calculations generated maps of local minimum field intensity (LMiFI, V/cm) and local minimum power …

INTRODUCTION: Physical activity has been associated with improved cardiovascular health outcomes in adults. However, the specific associations between physical activity volume and cardiovascular outcomes in youth athletes are less defined.
METHODS: This study analyzed data from the HeartBytes National Youth Database, compiled from Simon's Heart. Simon's Heart is a nonprofit organization that includes information from sports pre-participation examinations for adolescents. The dataset encompasses demographics, electrocardiogram (ECG) findings, and exercise-related symptoms. Youth athletes' self-reported weekly physical activity volume was classified into four levels: < 2 h, 2-5 h, 5-10 h, and >10 h, with less than 2 h taken as the reference group. Given the physical diMerences among athletes …
Cooperative Evolution For Discovering Scalable Spiking Neural Network Architectures, Catherine C. Rodriquez
Cooperative Evolution For Discovering Scalable Spiking Neural Network Architectures, Catherine C. Rodriquez
LSU Master's Theses
SNNs are a foundational model in neuromorphic computing, where efficient architectures must be discovered for a wide range of applications. Evolutionary methods, such as EONS, offer a flexible approach to this search but become increasingly difficult to scale as task complexity grows due to the rapidly expanding combined topology–parameter search space and associated memory demands. To address this challenge, we propose a co-evolutionary ensemble framework in which a population of candidate SNNs is evolved with fitness defined by each network’s marginal contribution to group performance. Grounded in cooperative game theory and difference evaluation functions from multiagent systems, this formulation provides …
How Young Mothers’ Interpersonal And Emotional Well-Being Impacts Parental Stress And Dating Violence, Jonathan Jin
How Young Mothers’ Interpersonal And Emotional Well-Being Impacts Parental Stress And Dating Violence, Jonathan Jin
Theses and Dissertations
This two-part dissertation investigated two distinct, yet interconnected aspects of young mothers’ wellbeing which span individual and interpersonal factors. Study 1 examined how adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are related to parental stress, and how symptoms of anxiety and depression might mediate this association. Within a sample 255 young mothers with an average age of 22.2 (SD = 2.3), the pooled results of a parallel mediation model across 10 imputed datasets indicated a significant average direct effect of ACEs on parental stress (0.25, p < .01), suggesting that experiencing a history of ACEs was significantly associated with more parental stress. Study 2 examined the relationship between young mothers’ romantic attachment, emotion regulation, and dating violence (DV) victimization. In a different sample of 256 young mothers with an average age of 19.8 years (SD = 1.1), more avoidant (less secure) romantic attachment styles (β = 0.26, SE = 0.1, p < 0.01) and more anxious romantic attachment styles (linear component β = 3.81, SE = 0.9, p < 0.001 and quadratic component β = -2.86, SE = 0.9, p < 0.01) were significantly associated with greater DV victimization. Future research may extend this work by using longitudinal designs to test bidirectional links between interpersonal and emotional wellbeing factors among young mothers.

A-isoforms of cytosolic growth factor homologous factors (FGF11-14) mediate long-term inactivation (LTI) of voltage-dependent sodium (NaV) channels. LTI is a rapid onset process that is competitive with the fast inactivation (IF) intrinsic to NaV channels, with little or no interconversion between inactivated states. Since recovery from LTI is orders of magnitude slower than recovery from IF, repetitive depolarizations lead to use-dependent accumulation of NaV channels in slow recovery states, thereby limiting NaV availability during trains of action potentials. Of the two or more N-terminal splice variants of the various FGF homologues, LTI specifically arises only from the A-isoform of each …

Subunit Composition Of The Katp Channels That Modulate Contractility Of Skeletal Muscle During Fatigue, Rosa Scala, Yuezhou Chen, Berk Mizrak, Gretchen A Meyer, Colin G Nichols
2020-Current year OA Pubs
ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channels are among the most expressed ion channels in skeletal muscle sarcolemma. While all KATP subunits can be detected in skeletal muscles, transcripts are enriched for KCNJ11 and ABCC9, suggesting that noncanonical Kir6.2/SUR2A assembly may constitute the majority of sarcolemmal KATP channels, but there has been no systematic dissection of KATP makeup in skeletal muscles. Here, we used a unique collection of murine lines selectively lacking specific channel-forming subunits (knockout, KO), and combined a genetic and pharmacological approach to determine which subunits of KATP channels are functionally relevant for skeletal muscle contraction. Under fatiguing conditions, isometric tetanic …

Hybrid Lipid-Gold Nanoparticles Designed For Simultaneous Gene Therapy And Photothermal Therapy Against Cancer, Navya Sree Devaguptapu
Theses and Dissertations
Traditional cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and surgery include adverse side effects and acquire resistance. Here, I developed a novel hybrid lipid-gold nanoparticle technology (LGNP) to achieve simultaneous gene regulation and photothermal therapy, specifically targeting pediatric acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and ovarian cancer. This core material consists of slice core/gold nanoshells, which are efficient heat transducers where NIR light activates nanoshells embedded in tumors, generating localized heat for tumor ablation. The ionizable lipid coating facilitates intracellular delivery of nucleic acids, such as mRNA or siRNA, to modulate gene expression effectively. Lipid-gold hybrid nanoparticles (LGNPs) are synthesized via a controlled self-assembly …
Leveraging Oxaziridines In Transition Metal Catalysis And As Reactive Intermediates, Jenna Marie Doran
Leveraging Oxaziridines In Transition Metal Catalysis And As Reactive Intermediates, Jenna Marie Doran
Theses and Dissertations
Oxaziridines are versatile three-membered nitrogen–oxygen heterocycles that can function both as reactive intermediates and as components of transition-metal catalysts, enabling selective and diverse organic transformations. This work explores the dual role of oxaziridines in facilitating alkene functionalization and amide synthesis. We discovered that vanadooxaziridines catalyze intermolecular allylic amination with high regio- and chemoselectivity, providing a mild route to allylic amines, whereas molybdooxaziridine complexes display an unexpected preference for vinyl sulfonation, revealing a divergent pathway from the typical nitrogen-transfer reactions and offering access to synthetically valuable sulfur-containing motifs. In parallel, oxaziridine intermediates derived from imines mediate efficient formation of amides from …

Landscape theory for food web architecture (LTFWA) posits that the stability of food webs is supported by the coupling of fast pelagic and slow littoral energy channels mediated by large mobile consumers. Empirical tests of the LTFWA are limited, and support for the LTFWA varies among and within aquatic ecosystems. While the LTFWA is thought to be supported in large lake ecosystems, empirical studies have focused on temperate environments with little emphasis on large tropical lake ecosystems. Lake Turkana, a climatically sensitive East African Great Lake, is a highly resilient desert lake and an ideal model for examining how consumer …

RNA N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is a key regulator of gene expression during early embryogenesis. Using SAC-seq (m6A-selective allyl chemical labeling and sequencing), an antibody-independent m6A profiling method, we generated the first single-nucleotide-resolution m6A map of bovine oocytes and preimplantation embryos. We observed both coordinated and uncoupled relationships between m6A modification and expression of protein-coding and noncoding genes. Integrative analysis of the transcriptome, m6A epitranscriptome, and translatome revealed dynamic m6A remodeling, particularly in ribosomal protein genes. Functional interrogation of a specific m6A site within the RPL12 transcript demonstrated that loss of this modification reduces protein synthesis, disrupts translation-related gene expression, impairs zygotic …

Ct-Derived Epicardial Adipose Tissue Density And Its Association With Systemic Inflammation And Functional Impairment In Heart Failure With Preserved Ejection Fraction: A Prospective Cross-Sectional Study From Oman, Arif Albulushi, Ahmed Tawfek, Ahmed Basuoni
Journal of the Saudi Heart Association
Background: Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is strongly influenced by cardiometabolic comorbidity and systemic inflammation. Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) is a biologically active visceral fat depot in direct contact with the myocardium, and CT-derived EAT density (attenuation) may reflect inflammatory adipose remodeling beyond adipose quantity alone. However, the clinical relevance of EAT density in HFpEF remains uncertain.
Objectives: To evaluate the association of CT-derived EAT density with systemic inflammatory biomarkers, functional capacity, health status, and echocardiographic indices of HFpEF severity in a prospective cross-sectional cohort.
Methods: In a prospective cross-sectional study conducted between January and July 2024 at …

The engineering of durable small-diameter vascular grafts remains constrained by the challenge of simultaneously achieving mechanical robustness, controlled degradation, and instructive scaffold architecture. Here, we report a programmable dual-crosslinked metallo-elastomer platform, poly(1,3-propylene itaconate-co-2,2′-bipyridine-5,5′-dicarboxylate-co-succinate-co-sebacate) (M-PBIS), that integrates dynamic metal–ligand coordination with covalent crosslinking to enable orthogonal control over network mechanics, time-dependent viscoelastic behavior, and processability. PBIS polymers were synthesized by modular step-growth polyesterification, allowing independent tuning of backbone composition, bipyridine ligand density for metal coordination, and alkene (C = C) content for covalent crosslinking. This multidimensional design space allowed systematic tuning of tensile elastic modulus (0.06–3.2 MPa), extensibility (53%–491%), toughness (66–1339 …

In this paper, an analytical study of MHD-influenced hemodynamic of Jeffrey fluid during peristaltic transport in a two layered narrow channel is presented, a phenomenon that has substantial ramifications for microcirculatory dynamics in the cardiovascular system. The model assumes a Jeffery fluid in the core area to encapsulate microstructural phenomena, including viscosity fluctuations, whereas the periphery area is treated as a Newtonian fluid. The governing equations for both regions are simplified and analytically solved under the long wavelength approximation. Using MATHEMATICA, a numerical investigation is carried out to examine the influence of various parameters, such as the magnetic parameters, amplitude, …

BACKGROUND: Ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) reconstruction (UCLR) is a common procedure for overhead athletes, particularly baseball players sustaining partial or full UCL tears. Palmaris longus (PL) and gracilis (GR) autografts are the most frequently used graft sources, yet limited data compare clinical outcomes in baseball athletes.
PURPOSE: To compare patient-reported outcomes after UCLR with PL versus GR autografts in baseball players.
STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3.
METHODS: Patients who underwent isolated UCLR with either PL or GR autograft and a minimum of 2 years of follow-up were identified. All reconstructions were performed using the Modified Jobe or …
