Bodies Under Command: A Feminist-Foucauldian Narrative Analysis Of Institutional And Cultural Betrayal In Military Sexual Misconduct, Chelsea Wheeler May 2026

Bodies Under Command: A Feminist-Foucauldian Narrative Analysis Of Institutional And Cultural Betrayal In Military Sexual Misconduct, Chelsea Wheeler

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The military continues to experience alarming rates of sexual aggression, reaching epidemic levels. While all people can experience sexual aggression, women, compared to men, are more likely to experience this, despite women making up only 17 percent of the military. Throughout history, the military has demonstrated several instances of reactive attempts at combating the concerns of sexual aggression; however, these attempts have not been successful. From a feminist-Foucauldian lens, this dissertation research explores narratives of service members to gain a more in-depth understanding of the systemic dynamics that contribute to institutional and cultural betrayal in sexual victimization experiences. Additionally, this …

Black Maternal Mental Health: Counseling Considerations For Prenatal Depression And Anxiety, Morgan Renee Williams May 2026

Black Maternal Mental Health: Counseling Considerations For Prenatal Depression And Anxiety, Morgan Renee Williams

Educational Specialist, 2020-current

The maternal mortality rate of Black women in the United States is four times higher than white women (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020). The CDC defines a maternal death as “the death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy… but not from accidental or incidental causes” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2024, para. 1). This statistic is a consequence of the inequality within and outside of the American healthcare system (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2020). For the purposes of this research, Black women are defined as any women …

The Chinese Red Record: Western Lynch Law And The Nationalization Of Racial Terror, 1853–1915, Kevin Hegg May 2026

The Chinese Red Record: Western Lynch Law And The Nationalization Of Racial Terror, 1853–1915, Kevin Hegg

Masters Theses, 2020-current

Between the California Gold Rush and the First World War, Chinese immigrants were subjected to a systematic regime of extralegal racial violence marked by lynchings, riots, massacres, and forced expulsions. Using a newly compiled dataset of anti-Chinese lynchings and related lethal incidents, this thesis reconstructs a “red record” of that violence and traces its spread from California and the Pacific Coast to the Mississippi Delta. In doing so, it expands the geography of what Ida B. Wells called “OUR country’s national crime” in “Lynch Law in America” (1900). These extralegal killings formed part of a Western anti-Chinese exclusionist regime that …

The Effects Of An Autism Community Member Feedback-Based Training On Increasing Positive Interaction Skills, Francis Gary Powers Iii May 2026

The Effects Of An Autism Community Member Feedback-Based Training On Increasing Positive Interaction Skills, Francis Gary Powers Iii

Masters Theses, 2020-current

The current study examined the effects of a behavioral skills training (BST) on the frequency with which participants engaged in positive interaction skills that could be used when interacting with individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The behaviors for which the BST sought to increase were identified through a study that interviewed the members of a local autism community and first responders regarding actions that can be taken to foster more positive interactions when both specifically first responders and individuals with autism are at an emergency scene. A multiple baseline across behaviors design was used to assess the effect of …

Introductory Remarks On Gendered Anti-Palestinian Racism And Colonial Solidarities, Wafaa Hasan May 2026

Introductory Remarks On Gendered Anti-Palestinian Racism And Colonial Solidarities, Wafaa Hasan

Gatherings

This piece introduces a critical framework for understanding how feminism — particularly Western and settler-colonial feminisms — operates as both a site of solidarity and a mechanism of domination in relation to Palestinian women. Delivered at the inaugural Palestinian Feminist Conference at the University of Toronto (Oct. 10, 2025), the address examines how Palestinian feminist scholars and activists center epistemic resistance and collective feminist self-determination. Through the notion of Gendered Anti-Palestinian Racism (Gendered APR), the work extends analyses of Orientalist and imperial feminisms to describe a trinity of how Palestinian women are simultaneously hyper-visible — as dangerous mothers and divisive/disruptive …

When The Second Amendment Meets The Third Dimension: Bruen In The Age Of 3d-Printed Firearms, Andrew Touma May 2026

When The Second Amendment Meets The Third Dimension: Bruen In The Age Of 3d-Printed Firearms, Andrew Touma

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy Sidebar

3D-printed firearms pose a serious threat to the public by allowing individuals to circumvent traditional regulatory safeguards. Although the first shot from a 3D-printed firearm was over a decade ago, these weapons continue to exploit gaps in the federal regulatory scheme. In the meantime, state governments have adopted a variety of approaches to regulating 3D-printed firearms. As 3D printing pushes firearms technology into the future, the Supreme Court's decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass'n v. Bruen directs Second Amendment doctrine to look to history, leaving questions over whether a decidedly historical methodology could effectively adapt to technological …

What The Court Tells Reporters: A Discourse Analysis Of Press Interviews With The Justices Since 2000, Brown James May 2026

What The Court Tells Reporters: A Discourse Analysis Of Press Interviews With The Justices Since 2000, Brown James

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

The Supreme Court of the United States is among the most influential institutions in American life, yet it is also well known to be one of the most secluded and inaccessible. By and large, the justices only pass their thoughts and decision-making processes to the public via their official written opinions, and seldom grant interviews to reporters. General press coverage of the Court has been given considerable scholarly attention, but the limited interviews the justices grant to the press receive comparatively little attention. This article examines those interviews by analyzing 82 press interviews with active and retired justices from 2000 …

The Politics Of Rcra Criminal Enforcement, Joshua Ozymy, Melissa Jarrell Ozymy May 2026

The Politics Of Rcra Criminal Enforcement, Joshua Ozymy, Melissa Jarrell Ozymy

UC Law Environmental Journal

Violations of federal environmental laws governing hazardous and solid wastes are typically remedied via civil methods, except in the case of crimes involving significant harm and culpable conduct, which can merit criminal prosecution. With historically varied commitments to environmental enforcement, we would generally expect substantive increases in prosecutions and penalties for these crimes under Democratic, as opposed to Republican presidents, but very little is known about the criminal enforcement of hazardous and solid waste crimes generally or how they vary under different partisan regimes. Through content analysis of 2,728 criminal prosecutions resulting from U.S. EPA criminal investigations, 1983-2021, we select …

Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Don't Possess: Mapping A Potential Second Amendment Challenge To 18 U.S. Code § 922(G)(6), Emil Zakarian May 2026

Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Don't Possess: Mapping A Potential Second Amendment Challenge To 18 U.S. Code § 922(G)(6), Emil Zakarian

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy Sidebar

For decades, the United States military discharged LGBTQ+ service members based on their sexual orientation, often assigning discharge characterizations that carry enduring legal consequences. One overlooked consequence arises under 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(6), which prohibits individuals discharged "under dishonorable conditions" from possessing firearms. Although this provision has received limited judicial scrutiny, the Supreme Court's decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass'n v. Bruen calls its constitutionality into question by requiring that modern firearm regulations be consistent with the Nation's historical tradition of regulation.

This Note argues that § 922(g)(6) is constitutionally vulnerable as applied to veterans discharged solely …

How Is Going To War Like Buying A Car?: The Bargaining Model Of War, Richard R. Johnson May 2026

How Is Going To War Like Buying A Car?: The Bargaining Model Of War, Richard R. Johnson

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

The bargaining model of war, a popular, yet complex international relations theory, emphasizes how nations communicate signals regarding military strength, resolve to fight, and foreign policy goals. Since the military plays a major role in communicating these signals, its leaders should understand this theory, despite its complexities. This article explains the model and its components through the used car sale bargaining process and supplements the analogy with real-world examples of international events. This article will help military and foreign policy professionals easily grasp the concepts of the model.
