An Institutional And Policy Analysis Of Climate Adaptation In Dhaka, Bangladesh: An Examination Of Urban Heat Island Mitigation Strategies, Tamanna Binte Mesbah
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This thesis examines the institutional capacity for Urban Heat Island (UHI) mitigation in Dhaka, Bangladesh, focusing on governance structures, institutional arrangements, and implementation effectiveness. An analytical framework is applied to assess the capacity of key urban institutions including Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK), Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), and the Department of Environment (DoE) across dimensions of leadership, resources, coordination, and learning capacity. The study also examines governance dynamics such as inter-agency coordination, knowledge exchange, and mobilization capacity as they relate to the planning and implementation of heat mitigation strategies. Through semi-structured expert interviews the research …
Growing Agroecology: Two Case Studies From The U.S. Student Farm Movement, Amelia B. Armstrong
Growing Agroecology: Two Case Studies From The U.S. Student Farm Movement, Amelia B. Armstrong
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Scholars and activists identify agroecology as a crucial science, practice, and movement to move towards more just, equitable, and sustainable agriculture and food systems. Yet, the exploitative industrial food system, that deepens inequalities like food insecurity (Clapp et al., 2025), reduces farmer autonomy (Rotz, 2015), and contributes to increased carbon emissions (Lin et al., 2011) and biodiversity decline (Rotz, 2015), still dominates. Understanding and mobilizing the different spaces that teach agroecology, then, is a crucial step in challenging the dominant industrial food system. Agroecology education in university settings is an important domain to investigate as potential contributors to this movement, …

A Psychogeography Of The Lower Colorado River Basin, Arren L. Kimbel-Sannit
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Dried-up canals. Superheated strip malls. Proliferating data centers. Infinite appetite for growth despite its apparent circumstances. Arizona may well be the state of the American future. This multi-genre series of essays from Arren Kimbel-Sannit offers a personal, political-economic and ecological critique of growth and accumulation in Arizona — from the perspective of someone who grew up in its suburban expanses, reported on its politics, and long sought to clarify his relationship with home.
"More Boldly I Shall Go:" Jacobites, Hanoverians, And The Fabrication Of Nostalgia, 1745-1766, Jacob Louis Shropshire
"More Boldly I Shall Go:" Jacobites, Hanoverians, And The Fabrication Of Nostalgia, 1745-1766, Jacob Louis Shropshire
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This study investigates how Jacobites and Hanoverians constructed competing forms of nostalgia, identity, and political meaning in the decades after the rebellion of 1745. Although the defeat of Prince Charles Edward Stuart at Culloden ended any realistic hope of a Stuart restoration, it sparked a cultural struggle in which both supporters and opponents of the Stuarts depicted the Highlander as a symbol of heroic resistance or barbarism. A psychic struggle emerged as a result, and the Highlander became beloved by Jacobites and loathed by Hanoverians. These representations circulated through paintings, engravings, clothing, glassware, newspapers, pamphlets, and verse, which became central …
Race, Sexual Danger, And The Moral Logic Of Punishment In The Registry Era, Edith Meade
Race, Sexual Danger, And The Moral Logic Of Punishment In The Registry Era, Edith Meade
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Sex offender registries represent one of the most expansive and punitive criminal justice interventions in modern American history, yet public support for these policies remainsunderi nvestigated. Scholarly debate has questioned whether punitive attitudes toward sexual offenders reflect principled moral judgments, racial threat perceptions, or both. This study addresses that question by examining how offender race, offender age, offense severity, victim age, and offender-victim relationship shape public attitudes toward sexual offenders in the contemporary registry era. Drawing on theories of racialized sexual threat, group position, and retributive impulses, the study uses a nationally representative conjoint survey experiment administered through YouGov (N …
Illusions Of Fairness And Sacrifice, Brady Schwertfeger
Illusions Of Fairness And Sacrifice, Brady Schwertfeger
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The American West is a shifting landscape. An incongruous expanse of isolation and urbanity, wilderness and extraction, wealth and welfare, clear water and fire. Fifteen years ago, I moved to my mother’s ancestral homeland of Montana, and have been here ever since. Before that, I was born and raised in Texas, both the West and the South (and often something else entirely), depending on who you ask. My experiences in this region have shaped me indelibly, and have inspired this collection of essays built around culture, politics, and justice in the West. “Pinedale, Wyoming” considers the musician as itinerant wanderer …
The Experience Of A Single Parent Participating In Child-Parent Relationship Therapy: An Instrumental Single-Case Study, Matthew Nicholas Schramm
The Experience Of A Single Parent Participating In Child-Parent Relationship Therapy: An Instrumental Single-Case Study, Matthew Nicholas Schramm
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Traditional family structures in the United States have shifted significantly, with single-parent households facing systemic barriers that increase parental stress and strain the parent-child relationship. As this bond is critical for healthy child development, accessible mental health support is essential for these families (Parache et al., 2023).
Child Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT), a ten-week evidence-based program, strengthens this bond by training caregivers to use play as a therapeutic tool (Landreth & Bratton, 2020). This instrumental single case study (Stake, 1995) examined one single-parent's experience of CPRT delivered in a condensed four-week telehealth format, addressing the limited representation of single-parent households …
Empowering Rural Lgbtq2s+ Parents: An Exploration Of Perinatal Social Support And Perinatal Mental Health, Tess Alexandra Carlson
Empowering Rural Lgbtq2s+ Parents: An Exploration Of Perinatal Social Support And Perinatal Mental Health, Tess Alexandra Carlson
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs), which include depression and anxiety symptoms occurring during pregnancy and up to one year postpartum, are highly prevalent and frequently untreated, severely impacting family health. The immediacy of this issue is backed by CDC data showing mental health issues as the leading cause of pregnancy-related deaths. Improved methods for identifying PMADs, connecting parents to care, and understanding the broader social factors that shape perinatal mental health are critical. Guided by ecological systems theory, this dissertation research explores informal and formal social support and perinatal mental health among LGBTQ2S+ parents in Montana, contributing knowledge of …
Spatiotemporal Dynamics Of Mountain Front Recharge Flow Paths And Their Contribution To Alluvial Aquifer Water Supply, Mikaela Bollag-Miller
Spatiotemporal Dynamics Of Mountain Front Recharge Flow Paths And Their Contribution To Alluvial Aquifer Water Supply, Mikaela Bollag-Miller
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Mountain Front Recharge (MFR) is a critical recharge source for alluvial basin aquifers throughout the Intermountain West, yet the spatial and temporal dynamics of distinct recharge pathways remain poorly constrained. This study investigates the seasonal and spatial dynamics of MFR pathways and evaluates their impact on the Missoula Aquifer, a sole-source alluvial aquifer in western Montana, USA. MFR includes both surface-water inflows from mountain areas and Mountain Block Recharge (MBR), the groundwater contribution to the basin aquifer. A valley-scale water balance was employed to estimate first-order contributions and temporal fluctuations of MBR flow paths. A three-layer steady-state MODFLOW groundwater model …

Beyond The Indian Act: Restoring Traditional Government In Kahnawà:Ke Through Haudenosaunee Law, Brandon Montour
Beyond The Indian Act: Restoring Traditional Government In Kahnawà:Ke Through Haudenosaunee Law, Brandon Montour
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
The Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawà:ke have been subjected to the Indian Act since 1889. Its forceful imposition has eroded ancestral governance systems and severed vital threads of cultural and social life. In 2024, the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke—the Indian Act band council—declared its intent to restore traditional governance and unilaterally end the Indian Act’s reach within the territory. This work is presently underway in Kahnawà:ke. Against this backdrop, and in light of generations of collective experiences of trauma brought on by the forces of settler-colonialism, this article considers what role Haudenosaunee law can play in bringing community members together to build …
The Case For Contractual Exculpation Of Lawyers’ Liability: Doctrine, Economics, And Policy, Timothy Ke
The Case For Contractual Exculpation Of Lawyers’ Liability: Doctrine, Economics, And Policy, Timothy Ke
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
For over a century, Canadian lawyers have been prohibited from agreeing to contractual clauses limiting, allocating, or excluding their civil liability—a stark contrast to the graduated regimes governing other Canadian professionals and lawyers in major international jurisdictions, including the United Kingdom, United States, Australia, Germany, Switzerland, and Belgium. This article seeks to initiate a critical conversation about legitimizing such clauses. It anchors its analysis in doctrinal integrity, economic efficiency, and policy, addressing competing objectives in relation to fiduciary responsibility, the market for legal services, and liability insurance. In doing so, this work delineates the benefits and bounds of contractual freedom, …

Space Mining, Richard Painter
Space Mining, Richard Painter
Articles
The Trump Administration and U.S. Congress are promoting new ventures to extract valuable minerals from outer space. This Article does not dismiss the idea out of hand, but explores reasons for caution, including practical problems with space mining, its environmental impact, the likelihood that the United States could violate international law, and the risk of armed conflict. These problems are exacerbated by financial conflicts of interest in our government with a handful of billionaires, who have a financial interest in space mining work. The promotion of their agenda could involve wasteful government spending on subsidies for private ventures, with a …
Independence First ... Or Don't Use It: A Fiduciary Standard For Law-Firm Use Of General Ai, Edward S. Adams
Independence First ... Or Don't Use It: A Fiduciary Standard For Law-Firm Use Of General Ai, Edward S. Adams
Articles
To counter these structural threats, this Article proposes a restrictive, fiduciary-based standard for the use of GPAI in substantive legal work. The proposed “Fiduciary-Grade & Independence Safeguards” (FGIS) standard posits that law firms should presumptively prohibit the use of GPAI for tasks involving legal analysis, strategy, or the synthesis of confidential facts and law. A firm may only depart from this default prohibition if it can certify, with auditable proof, the implementation of two pillars of protection: (1) robust safeguards that neutralize vendor influence and preserve the lawyer’s independent professional judgment, and (2) fiduciary-grade confidentiality controls, including private deployment and …
Quantifying Uncertainty In Landscape Evolution And Provenance Analysis: Insights From Statistical And Numerical Modelling, Vivian Carmello Grom
Quantifying Uncertainty In Landscape Evolution And Provenance Analysis: Insights From Statistical And Numerical Modelling, Vivian Carmello Grom
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Landscape evolution models (LEMs) and detrital zircon provenance are widely used to investigate Earth surface processes, yet both face challenges related to quantifying model behavior and interpreting sedimentary signals under realistic, heterogeneous conditions. This thesis addresses these challenges through analysis and case studies that develop and apply new approaches for analyzing landscape dynamics and assessing uncertainties in sediment provenance.
Chapter 1 introduces a quantitative framework for evaluating LEM outputs using Shannon Entropy, Moran’s I, and Geary’s C. Applied to simulations with steady uplift, periodic uplift, spatially variable uplift, and a timeseries of DEMs, these metrics capture spatial organization and information …
Constitutional Limits On The President's Authority To Adjourn Congress, Allan Erbsen
Constitutional Limits On The President's Authority To Adjourn Congress, Allan Erbsen
Articles
Can the President adjourn Congress, declare that the adjournment constitutes a recess, and appoint cabinet officers without the Senate’s consent? President Donald Trump has considered invoking this supposed power. Adjourning Congress would enable the President to appoint otherwise unconfirmable officials. Even if the President does not adjourn Congress, the looming threat of adjournment could chill the Senate’s review of nominees.
This Article concludes that the President cannot evade the Senate’s role in the appointments process by adjourning Congress. Three clauses in the Constitution inform the analysis: the Consent Clause, which requires each house to consent to the other’s adjournment; the …
Jurisdiction And Citizenship, Ilan Wurman
Jurisdiction And Citizenship, Ilan Wurman
Articles
This Article makes a series of interventions into the existing literature on birthright citizenship. It makes three historical claims about the common law rule and its development. First, the Article centers the importance of parental status. The relevant status was not the citizenship of the parents, however, but whether they were under the protection of, and owed allegiance to, the sovereign. The common law rule therefore did not depend on descent, but the modern belief that the rule depended solely on place of birth is also mistaken. Second, it reveals through an examination of safe-conducts and English statutes from the …

Background: Intravenous thrombolytic (IVT) and mechanical thrombectomy (MT) therapies are the current standard of care for large vessel occlusion (LVO) stroke. Multiple studies emphasized the impact of time metrics on patient outcomes, particularly door-to-needle (DTN) and door-to-puncture (DTP) times. Tenecteplase (TNK) offers potential advantages over alteplase (ALT), including a simplified one-time bolus administration, which may reduce DTP time. Results suggest TNK is non-inferior to ALT in terms of clinical outcomes, but few large cohort studies have compared DTP time for patients receiving TNK vs. ALT prior to thrombectomy. This real-world study aimed to compare DTP times and discharge outcomes in …

The Social Role And Significance Of Religion For Ukraine Today – Historical Dynamics And Current Contributions, Olena Svysiuk
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The paper delivers an analysis of Ukrainians’ religious worldview, tracing its development and transformation under historical, social and political influences. The contribution of the main Christian denominations − Orthodoxy, Greek-Catholicism and Protestantism − to national identity-building, the shaping of moral values, social cohesion and civic engagement is outlined. The work highlights how religion is deeply entwined with Ukrainian traditions, spirituality, and political life, serving as both a moral compass and a catalyst for social change. It also points to the churches’ social ministry − humanitarian, educational and psychological support − during the full-scale war. The involvement of religious institutions as …

This article examines the processes of religious revitalization in Ukrainian society under wartime conditions and their institutional manifestations. It explores how religious institutions engage with the public sphere and their role in the ethically oriented transformation of suffering, turning individual trauma into socially constructive practice. The study draws on innovations in the activities of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, other Christian denominations, as well as Muslim and Jewish communities in Ukraine. It presents the Ukrainian model of religious revitalization as a social practice shaped by institutional autonomy and interfaith coordination. Particular attention is given to …

Legislative Support Of Religious Policy In Ukraine Under Martial Law, Volodymyr Karpunets, Andrii Shevchuk, Oleksandr Bilchuk
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The article examines the legislative framework of Ukraine's religious policy under the conditions of martial law caused by the full-scale armed aggression of the Russian Federation. The constitutional foundations of state-confessional relations are analyzed, particularly the provisions of Article 35 of the Constitution of Ukraine on freedom of conscience and religion, as well as Article 64, which provides for the possibility of temporary restrictions on religious rights under martial law. Key legislative acts are reviewed: the Laws of Ukraine "On Freedom of Conscience and Religious Organizations" (1991, with amendments in 2018 and 2019), "On the Legal Regime of Martial Law" …

This study examines the emergence of digital Sufism as a modern spiritual phenomenon. It investigates the participation of Sufi groups on social media, the themes conveyed in their online sermons, and the ways their digital strategies compare with other Islamic organizations. The article further explores how Sufi orders navigate virtual environments, questioning whether they reveal elements of esoteric knowledge in these spaces. The notion of digital Sufism is presented as a lens for understanding how Sufi traditions integrate modern technology to widen the influence and relevance of their teachings. The research highlights how Sufism has adjusted to the challenges of …
