Real-World Use Of Theophylline In Critically Ill Patients With Sinus Pauses: A Case Series, Muhammad Ali Elahi, Hamza Jalal, William Frick, Bryan D Kraft
Real-World Use Of Theophylline In Critically Ill Patients With Sinus Pauses: A Case Series, Muhammad Ali Elahi, Hamza Jalal, William Frick, Bryan D Kraft
2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUND: A sinus pause is is defined as a delay in sinus node depolarization exceeding 3 s following atrial depolarization. In patients with pauses greater than 5 s accompanied by hemodynamic compromise, the primary treatment is permanent pacemaker (PPM) implantation. However, in the presence of an active infection, alternative strategies such as temporary transvenous pacing or pharmacologic agents may be more appropriate. This report highlights the use of theophylline as a non-invasive therapeutic option in two patients with asymptomatic sinus pauses who had contraindications to PPM placement.
CASES: Patient A was a 74-year-old woman with a history of pulmonary arterial …
Statins For Primary Prevention Of Variceal Bleeding In Cirrhosis: A Scoping Review, Jason Brumitt
Statins For Primary Prevention Of Variceal Bleeding In Cirrhosis: A Scoping Review, Jason Brumitt
Faculty Publications - College of Physical Therapy
Background/Objectives: Variceal bleeding (VB) is a major complication of cirrhosis, marking a progression from a compensated to a decompensated stage of the disease. Previous research has suggested that HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, commonly called statins, may have therapeutic benefits for those living with cirrhosis, though their exact benefits and role have yet to be elucidated. This scoping review evaluates the potential role of statins in the primary prevention of variceal bleeding in patients with cirrhosis, and if there exists a difference between hydrophilic and lipophilic statins for this indication. Methods: Publications from the last 10 years with primary or secondary outcomes …

Validity Of The Promis Ability To Participate In Social Roles And Activities Measure In Older Adult Health Assessment, Theresa Raudsepp
Faculty Publications - College of Physical Therapy
Objective: The International Classification of Function is often used in older adult clinical assessments. Well recognized is the high value, and difficulty, of assessing participation in social roles. The PROMIS Ability to Participate in Social Roles (APSR) measure may augment assessments enhancing our understanding of older adults’ participation in social roles. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the APSR diverges with other clinical measures suggesting it is measuring a separate construct adding new information to the clinical assessment.
Methods: A sample of convenience of older adults (n = 89) was recruited and administered clinical assessments that include …

Evaluation And Enhancement Of Suspected Opioid Overdose Definitions In Emergency Medical Services Data Using Machine Learning With Natural Language Processing, Peter Rock, Svetla Slavova, Sharon L. Walsh, Julia Martin, Daniel R. Harris
Institute for Biomedical Informatics Faculty Publications
Background: Fatal and non-fatal drug overdoses have evolved into a critical public health crisis, with over a 50% increase in the rate of fatal drug overdose since 2019. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) data has advantages over traditional emergency department data, including timeliness and captured non-transport encounters. However, there is no consensus EMS definition for suspected opioid overdose (SOO), and currently implemented knowledge-based (KB) definition may miss ambiguous cases. Machine learning with natural language processing (ML-NLP) has the potential to enhance SOO identification.
Methods: Secondary data originated from an oversampled dataset of 2,327 weighted encounters from Kentucky State EMS data (2018–2022). …

The Unmaking Of Section Two, Maureen Edobor
The Unmaking Of Section Two, Maureen Edobor
Scholarly Articles
Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act now stands at a paradoxical crossroads. Though it remains the statute’s central protection against racial vote dilution after Shelby County v. Holder, it is increasingly undermined by a constitutional framework that treats race-conscious remedies as suspect rather than necessary under Section 2. This Essay argues that Section 2 is being quietly unmade—not through direct invalidation, but through the convergence of Equal Protection Doctrine, racial-gerrymandering jurisprudence, and an ascendant commitment to colorblind constitutionalism. Tracing the Fifteenth Amendment’s original design and Congress’s expansive enforcement authority, the Essay situates Section 2 within a constitutional tradition …
Generative Imaging For Computational Pathology, Md Jillur Rahman Saurav
Generative Imaging For Computational Pathology, Md Jillur Rahman Saurav
Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations
Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining remains central to cancer diagnosis, providing morphological information essential for pathological assessment. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) and newer multiplexed imaging technologies complement H&E by revealing molecular information critical for accurate tumor subtyping and treatment decisions. In practice, however, H&E and IHC are obtained from different consecutive sections that are not spatially aligned, comprehensive multiplexed panels are expensive and tissue-consumptive, and not all stains are available at every clinical site, limiting comprehensive molecular profiling and the full diagnostic potential of these technologies in clinical practice. This dissertation addresses these gaps through three complementary generative deep learning studies in …
Should The Illiberal Arts Be Servile In A Classical Christian Education, Nadine B. Kong Mrs.
Should The Illiberal Arts Be Servile In A Classical Christian Education, Nadine B. Kong Mrs.
Master of Arts in Classical Studies
The purpose of this thesis is to research the role and position of the illiberal arts in a classical Christian education (CCE). The current climate of growth for CCE makes it a fitting moment to consider what bearing the illiberal arts should have on paideia formation. To answer this question, the historical context of CCE and the illiberal arts is presented. This leads to a complex issue around the various imprecise terms and historical attitudes surrounding the illiberal arts. Some synonymous terms have demeaning connotations: ‘servile arts’ or ‘illiberal arts,’ and others less negative, such as ‘common arts’ or ‘mechanical …
Awakening The Mind: How Secure Attachment Impacts Language Acquisition In Charles Dickens's Literary Orphans, Alaina Gray
Awakening The Mind: How Secure Attachment Impacts Language Acquisition In Charles Dickens's Literary Orphans, Alaina Gray
Master of Arts in Classical Studies
As a young child, Charles Dickens attached securely to his family. Through his strong literary relationship with his mother, Dickens learned to read well yet experienced a period of parental separation during his blacking factory employment, providing many opportunities to meet and interact with abandoned children, who pervade his novels. Baruch Hochman and Ilja Wachs describe the negative impacts of orphanhood in Dickens: The Orphan Condition. While Hochman and Wachs address the social and economic difficulties faced by Dickens’s literary orphans, they did not connect the orphan condition to impaired cognitive development. Experiencing an excellent literary relationship with his mother, …
Litigating The "Forever Chemical" Problem Through The Endangered Species Act, Charlotte A. Ramirez
Litigating The "Forever Chemical" Problem Through The Endangered Species Act, Charlotte A. Ramirez
Emory Law Journal
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a class of man-made, resiliently bonded chemicals, cause harm to both humans and animals. These “forever chemicals” can compromise immunity, increase cancer risks, and cause reproductive harm. Addressing the harms caused by PFAS variants is crucial to protect public health, environmental health, and biological diversity. However, the United States’ current regulatory scheme takes a disjointed approach to PFAS regulation. This is complicated by the frequent development of new PFAS variants, whose effects and environmental presence are largely unknown and understudied. While even the protections provided for humans under the current regulatory scheme fall short of …
Techno-Optimism In Innovation Law And Policy, Peter Lee
Techno-Optimism In Innovation Law And Policy, Peter Lee
Emory Law Journal
This Article examines an underappreciated bias that has long pervaded U.S. legal culture: an exceedingly enthusiastic view of technology and technological progress. It adopts the term “techno-optimism” to describe an asymmetrically positive view of innovation that extols its benefits, minimizes its harms, and elides much of its complexity. The recent rise of more skeptical attitudes toward technology only casts into sharper relief the techno-optimism that has subtly dominated policy debates for decades. As a case study of techno-optimism, this Article scrutinizes patent law, particularly its constitutionally defined objective of promoting technological progress. In so doing, it offers the first extended …
When Machines Collude: Rebooting Antitrust Law For The Age Of Algorithmic Markets, William K. Knight
When Machines Collude: Rebooting Antitrust Law For The Age Of Algorithmic Markets, William K. Knight
Emory Law Journal
Increasingly, our lives are being dominated by algorithms. From social media feeds to credit scoring, algorithms play a major role in our day-to-day lives, whether we recognize it or not. An emerging issue in the modern technology landscape is the potential for algorithms to cause anticompetitive harm to free markets. As pricing algorithms become more advanced and more widespread, they could facilitate collusive arrangements in a manner that bypasses antitrust laws, thereby adversely impacting consumers through higher prices. American competition law, primarily governed by the Sherman Antitrust Act, suffers from glaring deficiencies and ambiguities that remain unresolved, leaving it manifestly …
Addiction To Constitutionally Protected Activity: Speech, Press, And Religion, Eugene Volokh
Addiction To Constitutionally Protected Activity: Speech, Press, And Religion, Eugene Volokh
Emory Law Journal
Recent statutes and lawsuits have sought to restrict social media or video game design practices that supposedly cause some users to become “addicted.” Are such restrictions consistent with the First Amendment?
This Article begins by asking what would happen if the same arguments were applied to religious practices (whether or not the arguments’ supporters would seek to so apply them). Say some religious practice was viewed as causing emotional or financial harm—e.g., by leading some adherents to feel guilty about their sexuality, to distance themselves from family members, or to give substantial portions of their assets to the religious organization. …
The Public Utility Tradition In Antitrust Remedies, Ganesh Sitaraman
The Public Utility Tradition In Antitrust Remedies, Ganesh Sitaraman
Emory Law Journal
Historically, courts, jurists, legislatures, and scholars have recognized that some businesses provide important services to society in sectors in which competition is unlikely to achieve the public interest. Policymakers adopted statutes that comprehensively regulated the market structure and operations of these businesses as public utilities, including, among other things, by determining entry and exit into business lines; overseeing or affirmatively setting prices; and requiring uniform, nondiscriminatory sales and access. When policymakers had not—or had not yet––stepped in to legislatively regulate these enterprises, abuses of power were possible. Private plaintiffs and governments sued under the common law or antitrust laws to …

Predicting Next-Day Eur/Usd Direction Using News Sentiment And Technical Indicators With Finbert And Xgboost, Darshan Sanjaybhai Khunt
Selected Full-Text Master Theses 2021-
Forecasting exchange-rate movements is a challenging task because currency prices are influenced not only by macroeconomic and financial variables but also by market sentiment reflected in financial news. This thesis examines whether financial news headlines can be used to predict the next-day directional movement of the EUR/USD exchange rate by applying finance-specific natural language processing and machine learning techniques.
The study uses a dataset of approximately 466,000 finance-related English-language news headlines collected between 2021 and 2025, aligned with daily EUR/USD closing prices. After preprocessing and temporal alignment, the data are used to construct a binary classification task in which the …
Mindfulness Practice And Increases In Gray Matter Density, Gray Matter Volume, And Cortical Thickness: A Scoping Review, Jason Brumitt
Mindfulness Practice And Increases In Gray Matter Density, Gray Matter Volume, And Cortical Thickness: A Scoping Review, Jason Brumitt
Faculty Publications - College of Physical Therapy
Background/Objectives: Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have been linked to psychological and cognitive benefits, yet evidence for their impact on brain structure remains sparse. Neuroimaging suggests MBIs may alter gray matter volume (GMV), density (GMD), and cortical thickness (CT). The purpose of this scoping review was to investigate structural neuroplasticity following MBIs. Methods: Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, databases were searched for studies published between 2010 and 2023 that used structural MRI to assess structural brain changes in subjects after receiving MBIs. Nine studies met inclusion criteria, including five randomized controlled trials. Results: Mindfulness interventions ranged from 10 h of training to long-term practice …

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Female-perpetrated violence has exhibited concerning data trends in recent years. Prior scholarship indicates that past victimization and trauma in childhood, known as adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), are highly prevalent among women offenders. However, the research concerning ACEs and violent females is scattered. This thesis provides a scoping literature review using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) updated 2020 guidelines. A systematic database search was conducted using Academic Search Complete, SAGE Journals, Springer Nature Link, and HeinOnline to identify relevant peer-reviewed journal articles. Inclusion and exclusion criteria are established, focusing on studies published after January 2015. These …

Temporal Evolution Of Brain Inflammation In The Bilateral Common Carotid Artery Stenosis Model Of Chronic Cerebral Hypoperfusion, Makayla F. Cox, Jill M. Roberts, Ryan K. Shahidehpour, David L. Dornbos Iii, Adam D. Bachstetter
Neuroscience Faculty Publications
Chronic cerebral hypoperfusion is a major contributor to vascular cognitive impairment and dementia, primarily through its disruption of white matter integrity and promotion of neuroinflammatory cascades. The bilateral common carotid artery stenosis (BCAS) model has emerged as the predominant experimental approach for studying the effects of chronic cerebral hypoperfusion, particularly in aging-relevant contexts. This review synthesizes current knowledge of inflammatory responses in the BCAS model, with an emphasis on their temporal progression and functional consequences. We begin by outlining the clinical burden of hypoperfusion, the rationale for BCAS, and the hemodynamic phases it produces. We then examine early neurovascular unit …

Artificial light at night (light pollution) is widespread but understudied in the context of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Sleep and circadian disruption have been linked to amyloid-β (Aβ) accumulation and neuroinflammation, but whether dim light at night (dLAN) modifies these processes remains unclear. We tested whether chronic dLAN exposure (8 lux during the dark phase, 8 weeks) alters circadian rhythms, amyloid pathology, and neuroinflammation in 12–13 month-old humanized APP knock-in (KI) mice. hAPPSAA KI mice, which develop plaques, were compared with hAPPWT KI controls carrying only a humanized APP sequence. dLAN reduced circadian rhythm amplitude and stability while increasing …
