Too Warm To Lead? How Motherhood And Racioethnicity Shape Perceptions Of Warmth And Competence, Patricia Guerrero Jan 2026

Too Warm To Lead? How Motherhood And Racioethnicity Shape Perceptions Of Warmth And Competence, Patricia Guerrero

Management Dissertations

Women continue to face workplace bias, including wage disparities (Fry & Aragao, 2025) and barriers to advancement like the glass ceiling (Babic & Hansez, 2021). For mothers these challenges are compounded by stereotypes tied to their maternal status, such as assumptions about reduced commitment and the motherhood penalty (Arena Jr. et al., 2023). Research shows mothers are often viewed as warmer but less competent than non-mothers, which can hinder career progression (Cuddy et al., 2004; Heilman & Okimoto, 2008). Racial and ethnic stereotypes further shape perceptions, with Black women often labeled as “aggressive” and Latinas as “nurturing” (Ghavami & Peplau, …

Enhancing The User Experience Of Colorado Bend State Park Through The Implementation Of Cultural Landscape Analysis, Hunter C. Lynch Jan 2026

Enhancing The User Experience Of Colorado Bend State Park Through The Implementation Of Cultural Landscape Analysis, Hunter C. Lynch

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

This design thesis investigates how landscape character and sense of place can be more clearly expressed through a cultural landscape approach to design at Colorado Bend State Park, a state park in Texas, with a focus on guiding future trail and campsite development in the currently undeveloped eastern portion of the park. The park’s dramatic canyons, limestone bluffs, spring-fed systems, and upland prairies form a series of distinct, yet interconnected landscape conditions shaped by the interaction of physical structure, ecological systems, and cultural associations. While these characteristics define the site's identity and are reflected in portions of the existing park, they …

Voice And Student Engagement With Writing: Integrating Perspective, Personality, And Style, Sara S. Martin Jan 2026

Voice And Student Engagement With Writing: Integrating Perspective, Personality, And Style, Sara S. Martin

English Dissertations

The rise of generative AI has many teachers worried about the future of writing classes and students’ desire to learn. However, instructors can motivate students to write by valuing what AI can never replace: their voices. Previous definitions of voice took the concept for granted and left it either vague or reductive, unhelpful for structured lessons. I propose a new, more teachable definition of voice as perspective, personality, and style. Perspective takes priority because it belongs solely to the individual and the unrepeatable moment of composition. Personality infuses passages with emotion, forming a bond between author and reader. Style, the …

(Trans*)Gressing Discourse: Producing And Disrupting Normativity In Education For Trans* Students With Dis/Abilities, Meagan Meredith Jan 2026

(Trans*)Gressing Discourse: Producing And Disrupting Normativity In Education For Trans* Students With Dis/Abilities, Meagan Meredith

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation investigates how political rhetoric, education policy, and educational community member discourse construct, circulate, and contest meanings about trans*ness and dis/ability in K-12 public schools. In doing so, the study examines how meanings about normativity are discursively produced and disrupted for students living at this specific intersection. Grounded in a trans* methodology, this study performs a critical discourse analysis through a rhizomatic reading of policy texts, political rhetoric, and publicly available stakeholder discourse. This work responds to a gap in the literature that fails to understand the complexities experienced by trans* students with dis/abilities, particularly in hostile school climates. …

Using Provided Guided Notes In Coordinated Introductory First-Year Mathematics Courses, Jennifer L. Huber Jan 2026

Using Provided Guided Notes In Coordinated Introductory First-Year Mathematics Courses, Jennifer L. Huber

Mathematics Dissertations

The goal of this study is to investigate how standardized guided notes shape instructional practices and student engagement in coordinated introductory first-year college mathematics courses at a large public university. The researcher explored three multi-section introductory mathematics courses with overlapping learning objectives. Each course required students to purchase a student workbook as part of the instructional materials for the class. The instructors taught primarily from the workbook containing guided notes created by a former coordinator of the course. The researcher used a mixed-methods approach. Instructors and students participated in surveys, class observations and provided class meeting notes. Instructors shared additional …

Enhancing The Performance Of Disk-Based Key-Value Stores: From Learned Index Acceleration To I/O-Efficient Hybrid Caching, Sujit Maharjan Jan 2026

Enhancing The Performance Of Disk-Based Key-Value Stores: From Learned Index Acceleration To I/O-Efficient Hybrid Caching, Sujit Maharjan

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

The exponential growth of data in modern computing environments has rendered the efficient extraction of information from massive datasets a critical systemic requirement. Key-value (KV) storage systems serve as the backbone for these operations; however, their performance is consistently bottlenecked by two primary functional requirements: identifying the data's location and managing the physical cost of accessing the storage device. Data locations are typically identified via an index, while disk I/O is minimized through caching. This dissertation presents LearnedStore, TurboIndex, and ReadBooster, which break these performance bottlenecks by introducing architectural modifications to the index and cache. LearnedStore accelerates operations by adapting …

Adaptive Synchronization In Digital Twin–Enabled Iot Systems: A Unified Framework For Energy, Fidelity, And Latency Trade-Offs, Uzma Zehra Jan 2026

Adaptive Synchronization In Digital Twin–Enabled Iot Systems: A Unified Framework For Energy, Fidelity, And Latency Trade-Offs, Uzma Zehra

Computer Science and Engineering Theses

Digital twin technology has emerged as a foundational paradigm for enabling real-time monitoring, analysis, and control in Internet of Things (IoT) systems by maintaining virtual representations of physical processes. Its effectiveness, however, critically depends on timely and accurate synchronization between distributed sensing devices and their corresponding digital counterparts. Frequent synchronization improves reconstruction fidelity and system responsiveness but incurs significant communication energy consumption and network latency. In contrast, infrequent synchronization conserves communication resources but can lead to stale or inaccurate digital twin states, particularly in environments with rapidly changing dynamics. These opposing effects give rise to a fundamental trade-off among energy …

Elevated Bmi And The Effect On Breastfeeding Duration In Postpartum Individuals: An Integrative Review, Abigail E. Mobilia, Kirstin A. Wyly

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: It has been well documented that exclusive breastfeeding provides benefits for infants and postpartum individuals, yet rates remain suboptimal in the United States, particularly among those with elevated pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI). Evidence suggests that elevated BMI is associated with shorter breastfeeding duration and may be influenced by physiologic, social, and structural factors. This integrative review synthesizes existing literature to clarify the relationship between elevated BMI and exclusive breastfeeding duration among postpartum individuals.
Methods: An integrative review was conducted following Whittemore and Knafl’s (2005) framework and PRISMA 2020 guidelines. A systematic search of PubMed, CINAHL, and Nursing & …

How Gender Differences Influence The Presentation, Diagnosis, And Lived Experience Of Females With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Casey A. Vanyo Jan 2026

How Gender Differences Influence The Presentation, Diagnosis, And Lived Experience Of Females With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Casey A. Vanyo

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition with a highly variable presentation influenced by gender. Historically, autism research has focused primarily on males, contributing to the under recognition and misdiagnosis of girls, women, and gender-diverse individuals. Women engage in camouflaging behaviors to align with social expectations, which can mask autistic traits and contribute to higher levels of anxiety, depression, and emotional exhaustion. This thesis examines how gender shapes the presentation, diagnosis, and lived experiences of autistic females. It explores differences in diagnostic practices, mental health outcomes, and access to support. Findings suggest that current frameworks often fail to capture …

Conspiracy Paradigms: Response To Conspiracy, Really?, Laurent Sacharoff Jan 2026

Conspiracy Paradigms: Response To Conspiracy, Really?, Laurent Sacharoff

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Federal law codifies more than one hundred conspiracy statutes. When we critique and seek to fix conspiracy law, we must therefore first identify which type or paradigm of conspiracy we are addressing. Andrew Ingram’s excellent article tackles the application of conspiracy to street crime, and his proposed solution requiring proof of substantial planning and organization makes sense in that realm. But the same proposal may create more, rather than less, injustice when applied to other paradigms, such as the use of conspiracy law to punish social movements and protests.

The Shareholder Democracy Lie, Sergio Alberto Gramitto Ricci, Daniel J.H. Greenwood, Christina M. Sautter Jan 2026

The Shareholder Democracy Lie, Sergio Alberto Gramitto Ricci, Daniel J.H. Greenwood, Christina M. Sautter

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

This Article critically examines the fallacious nature of “shareholder democracy” rhetoric and its implications for corporate governance, political democracy, and societal wellbeing. While corporations and activists frequently invoke shareholder democracy to advance their agendas, this concept fundamentally misrepresents the reality of corporate governance and share ownership in America. We systematically debunk the shareholder democracy myth by analyzing historical developments in shareholding, examining barriers to share ownership, and investigating the current state of corporate voting.

The term shareholder democracy first gained popularity in the 1920s, when Wall Street firms and the NYSE used it to attract retail investors while simultaneously helping …

Anything For Views Parenting, Bahar Tarighi Jan 2026

Anything For Views Parenting, Bahar Tarighi

Lewis & Clark Law Review

Children who appear in monetized family vlogs are the product. Without them, the content would not exist, and the revenue would not follow. Yet unlike child actors in traditional entertainment, these children receive no guaranteed wages, no mandated trust accounts, and no right to control the digital record created in their name. This gap is a product of a legal framework that has simply not kept pace: the Fair Labor Standards Act, enacted in 1938, expressly exempted child performers from its protections, and neither Congress nor the majority of states have updated their child labor frameworks to account for the …

Utility-Privacy-Communication Trade-Offs In Federated Financial Fraud Detection Under Non-Iid Client Heterogeneity, Baraa I. Farhan Jan 2026

Utility-Privacy-Communication Trade-Offs In Federated Financial Fraud Detection Under Non-Iid Client Heterogeneity, Baraa I. Farhan

Polytechnic Journal

Financial fraud detection is difficult because fraudulent transactions are rare, unevenly distributed, and sensitive. This study evaluates a lightweight multilayer perceptron under Federated Averaging (FedAvg), Federated Proximal optimization (FedProx), and Federated Adam (FedAdam), using three seeds and validation-selected decision thresholds. Corrected R4 experiments cover the Credit Card Fraud Detection benchmark, the larger Credit Card Transactions dataset, PaySim as a stand-alone synthetic stress test, and the Bank Account Fraud (BAF) Dataset Suite. On Credit Card, FedProx with 20 clients and alpha = 0.5 achieved F1 = 0.789 +/- 0.010. On Transactions, the best tested federated setting used 10 clients and achieved …

Metaheuristic Feature Selection Techniques For Software Fault Prediction: Swot Analysis And Emerging Trends, Ruchika Aggarwal, Kamaljit Kaur Jan 2026

Metaheuristic Feature Selection Techniques For Software Fault Prediction: Swot Analysis And Emerging Trends, Ruchika Aggarwal, Kamaljit Kaur

Polytechnic Journal

The paper presents a detailed study of metaheuristic feature selection (MH-FS) methods in software fault prediction (SFP), designed to address the limitations of filter and wrapper feature selection methods such as high dimensionality and local optima that can lead to poor prediction accuracy. MH-FS algorithms address these issues by effectively searching the feature space to identify optimal subsets that improve classifier performance. It conducts a comprehensive narrative review and SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) of MH-FS methods in SFP, considering 44 peer-reviewed articles from 2023 to 2025. A formal taxonomy of metaheuristic algorithms is presented, along with an …

W. E. B. Du Bois And Black People's Blocked March Toward Equality, Michael Tonry Jan 2026

W. E. B. Du Bois And Black People's Blocked March Toward Equality, Michael Tonry

Articles

W. E. B. Du Bois, a man of extraordinary gifts, in 1897–1898 completed a survey of the lives of 9675 Black Philadelphians. Black inequality and crime were, he observed, products of interactions among legacies of historic racism, contemporaneous discrimination, and conditions of deep structural disadvantage. Criminologists have long documented the criminogenic effects of structural disadvantage, concluding that they are race-neutral, affecting people of all “races” in much the same way, but have only recently, like Du Bois, acknowledged that the background conditions of Black people's lives are not race-neutral. The policy implications are straightforward: Aggressively challenge invidious bias, identify and …

Mathematical Modeling Predicts Novel Mechanisms Of Stream Confinement From Trail/Colec12/Dan In The Collective Migration Of Cranial Neural Crest Cells., Samuel W S Johnson, Paul M. Kulesa, Ruth E. Baker, Philip K. Maini

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

BACKGROUND: In vertebrate embryogenesis, cranial neural crest cells (CNCCs) migrate along discrete pathways. Analyses in the chick have identified key molecular candidates for the confinement of CNCC migration to stereotypical pathways as Colec12, Trail, and Dan. The effects of these factors on CNCCs in vitro are known, but how they confine migration to discrete streams in vivo remains poorly understood. Here, we propose and test several hypothetical mechanisms by which these factors confine cell streams and maintain coherent migration, simulating an expanded agent-based model for collective CNCC migration.

RESULTS: Model simulations suggest that Trail enhances adhesion between CNCCs, facilitating movement …

Identification Of Neural Crest And Melanoma Cancer Cell Invasion And Migration Genes Using High-Throughput Screening And Deep Attention Networks., J C Kasemeier-Kulesa, S Martina Perez, R E Baker, Paul M. Kulesa

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

BACKGROUND: Cell migration and invasion are well-coordinated in development and disease but remain poorly understood. We previously showed that the neural crest (NC) cell migratory wavefront shares a 45-gene panel with other cell invasion phenomena. To rapidly and systematically identify critical genes, we performed a high-throughput siRNA screen and statistical and deep learning analyses to determine changes in NC- versus non-NC-derived human cell line behaviors.

RESULTS: We find 14 out of 45 genes significantly reduced c8161 melanoma cell migration; four of the 14 genes altered leader cell motility (BMP4, ITGB1, KCNE3, and RASGRP1). Deep learning identified marked disruptions in cell-neighbor …

Designing Contract Modification, Albert H. Choi, George G. Triantis Jan 2026

Designing Contract Modification, Albert H. Choi, George G. Triantis

Articles

For long-term commercial contracts, modification tends to be the norm rather than the exception. While modification often takes place in response to an arrival of new information, contracting parties frequently modify the terms in response to a shift in bargaining power. In this Article, we explain how the flexibility to renegotiate in response to a shift in bargaining power can facilitate long-term contracting and thereby beneficial reliance investments and risk allocation. The prospect of modification can induce contracting parties who expect their bargaining power to improve, such as from the emergence of outside opportunities, to enter into contracts earlier and …

The Durability Of Protections Against Abuse At Interpol Amidst Rising Authoritarian Pressures, Kristina Daugirdas Jan 2026

The Durability Of Protections Against Abuse At Interpol Amidst Rising Authoritarian Pressures, Kristina Daugirdas

Articles

Over centuries and across continents, authoritarian governments have demonstrated a large appetite for international cooperation to target political opponents across borders. In 1851, the “first modern police organization”—the Police Union of German States, whose members included Austria and Prussia—was established “with the express purpose of policing the political opposition of established autocratic regimes.” During the 1970s and early 1980s, military regimes in South America participated in a secret scheme known as Operation Condor to coordinate their efforts to suppress subversion. A recent analysis of twenty-nine “hard authoritarian” regional organizations found that twenty-five were engaged in police cooperation. The Shanghai Cooperation …
