The Irkutsk Incident: A Warning And Wake-Up Call For Biosecurity And The Btwc, James Giordano
The Irkutsk Incident: A Warning And Wake-Up Call For Biosecurity And The Btwc, James Giordano
Strategic Insights
The recent Irkutsk incident in Russia highlights critical challenges in global biosecurity, biosurveillance, and the verification of potentially high-risk biological activities. Although the circumstances surrounding the incident remain uncertain, it highlights the difficulty of distinguishing natural disease outbreaks, laboratory accidents, legitimate dual-use research, and potentially prohibited biological activities. Dr. Giordano argues that advances in biotechnology, synthetic biology, gene editing, and artificial intelligence (AI) are outpacing existing biosafety standards and international oversight mechanisms. He advocates a more comprehensive, process-aware approach to biological risk assessment that considers experimental procedures, enabling technologies, potential biological changes, and consequences of failure. The article outlines recommendations …

Good News! Students With Disabilities Are Overrepresented In Private School Choice Programs, Patrick J. Wolf, John Kristof, Alex Wolf, Alli Aldis
Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications
- Critics predicted that, once private school choice was implemented on a large scale, students with disabilities would become highly concentrated in the public school system. That hasn’t happened.
- We conservatively estimate that 258,844 students with disabilities are participating in private school choice programs.
- Students with disabilities are being served in the private school choice sector at a rate higher than that in the public school sector.
- Private school choice programs provide important educational options for many students with disabilities, helping ensure they can access the education that best meets their needs.

Carpet Viper (Echis Romani) Envenoming In Nigeria: Ecology, Venom Pathophysiology, Clinical Burden And Health-System Determinants, Godpower Chinedu Michael, Auwal A. Bala
Human Genetics Publications
Purpose of review: The carpet viper (Echis romani, recently separated from E. ocellatus) accounts for at least 66% of confirmed snakebite envenomings in the Nigerian savanna. Despite this, continental hazard modeling ranks it second in Nigeria. It is smaller and not necessarily more venomous per bite than the puff adder (Bitis arietans) or the black-necked spitting cobra (Naja nigricollis). This review synthesizes evidence on the ecology, venom effects, clinical impact, and health-system factors of carpet viper envenoming in Nigeria, including its effects on livestock and One Health considerations.
Recent findings: The risk of snakebite is influenced by multiple factors beyond …

The Employment Situation Of Veterans: September 2026, Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University
Institute for Veterans and Military Families
The September 2026 veteran employment report shows that veteran unemployment increased slightly from 3.4% in August to 3.5% in September, while post-9/11 veteran unemployment rose from 3.5% to 4.1%. National labor market conditions remained relatively stable, with little change in overall employment and unemployment. The most significant concern was among younger veterans ages 18 to 24, whose unemployment rate increased sharply to 23.8%. Female veteran unemployment also rose substantially, reaching 6.1%, while male veteran unemployment declined to 3.0%. Unemployment rates varied across demographic groups, though many veteran populations continued to experience employment outcomes comparable to or better than nonveterans. Duration …

In relapsed/refractory large B-cell lymphoma (LBCL), chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-natural killer (NK) cell therapies offer potential advantages over CAR-T-cell therapies, including off-the-shelf availability and scalable manufacturing. We performed a phase 2 study of single-dose TAK-007, a cryopreserved, cord blood-derived, off-the-shelf CD19 CAR-NK cell therapy, in 26 heavily pre-treated patients with relapsed/refractory B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). Adverse events were manageable, with limited grade 1-2 cytokine release syndrome (11.5%). Overall response rate with TAK-007 800 x106 CD19 CAR+ viable NK cells (n=14) was 60.9% (95% CI: 38.5-80.3). Median progression-free survival was 2.0 months (95% CI: 0.99-3.58) in LBCL (n=10) and 5.6 months …

Breastfeeding initiation has been found to be lower in pregnant persons with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, no studies have explored the potential impact of T2DM during pregnancy on breastfeeding plans among Thai pregnant persons. This study aimed to describe breastfeeding confidence and intention during pregnancy among Thai pregnant persons with T2DM. This qualitative analysis utilized data from a parent study with a convergent parallel mixed-methods design. This study was guided by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) Framework. Eligible participants were pregnant persons diagnosed with T2DM, aged 20–44 years, and proficient in speaking Thai. …

Background: Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) is a rapidly growing grappling-based combat sport, but emergency department (ED) surveillance and sport-specific mechanism classification are limited.
Hypothesis: We hypothesized that BJJ-related ED visits have grown disproportionately compared with overall martial arts ED presentations and that sport-specific mechanisms predict nonroutine disposition.
Study Design: Descriptive epidemiology study.
Methods: Retrospective cross-sectional analysis of the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS), 2015-2024. BJJ cases were identified from product code 3257, which corresponds to martial arts equipment and activity-related injuries, followed by a 2-reviewer narrative review. Trends were analyzed using survey-weighted quasi-Poisson regression. An 11-category force vector mechanism taxonomy …

The Impact Of Urban Morphology On Spatial Configuration And Socio-Spatial Structure: A Comparative Space Syntax Analysis, Tazra Kamaran Ismael, Abdulrazaq Zamil Menshid Al-Saedi
Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
Urban morphology plays a crucial role in shaping the spatial configuration, movement patterns, and socio-spatial interactions within cities. However, despite the extensive development of Space Syntax research, limited research has comparatively examined how contrasting urban morphologies influence spatial hierarchy, accessibility, and intelligibility within the same urban context, particularly in the rapidly transforming cities of the Global South. This study investigates the configurational characteristics of two contrasting urban sectors in Koya City, Iraq: the organically developed historic city centre and the planned grid-based Zanko neighbourhood. A Space Syntax analysis was conducted using axial maps generated in DepthmapX. The analysis was supported …

Marine Spatial Planning In The Asean Countries: Lesson Learned For Future Ocean Governance In Malaysia, Husni Alhan Md Salimun, Mohd Fadzil Akhir, Nazli Aziz, Che Din Mohd Safuan, Wan Izatul Asma Wan Talaat
Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) has emerged as an important governance instrument for balancing ecological protection, economic development, and social inclusion amid the rapidly intensifying blue economy in Southeast Asia. Although several ASEAN Member States (AMS) have initiated MSP processes, the existing literature on MSP governance in this region remains fragmented and largely descriptive, limiting systematic cross-country comparison and evidence-based lessons. This study addresses this gap by assessing MSP governance performance across ASEAN countries and againts internationally recognized MSP governance benchmarks. A structured narrative review was conducted using selected PRISMA-informed procedures for literature identification and screening. Academic publications from 2003 to …

Executive summary
The research enterprise in the United States, established after the second world war, is experiencing massive disruption. US colleges and universities are grappling with federal and state disinvestment and intervention at a time when AI and other technologies are reshaping how research is conducted and its findings are communicated. As a result, researchers at US higher education institutions are operating in an unstable environment. Against this backdrop, the findings from our survey of 4,003 researchers, fielded in late 2025, demonstrate that they remain committed to carrying out essential work and that they are doing so in innovative ways—through …

Have You Done Your Duty? Impact Of Direct Mailing Campaign On Septic System Owners' Maintenance Knowledge And Behaviors In Coastal Texas Watersheds, Audrey Mccrary, T. Allen Berthold
Journal of Extension
As part of a watershed protection plan, the Texas Water Resources Institute and AgriLife Extension Service developed and distributed an educational postcard (``mailer'') about septic system maintenance to mailing addresses outside of public sewer service areas. The mailer was distributed four times within 1 year. The impact of this mailer was evaluated with a retrospective pre/post-test within a mailed survey. Overall, the mailer was effective at increasing knowledge of septic system owners and prompting maintenance action. Mailers can be a cost-effective alternative for educational initiatives where the target audience is not able to or interested in in-person or online programs.

Extending your growing season is a great way to produce more food earlier in spring, later in fall, or even during winter. One of the best ways to do this is to use indoor gardening and greenhouse systems, which let you grow plants beyond what is possible outdoors or alongside outdoor growing. This guide focuses on soil-based indoor gardening.

Exploring The Appetite For Early Morning Online Classes: A Conceptual Framework For Future Research, Niall A. Minto, Christina Ryan
Exploring The Appetite For Early Morning Online Classes: A Conceptual Framework For Future Research, Niall A. Minto, Christina Ryan
Irish Journal of Academic Practice
This conceptual paper explores the potential for early morning online classes in part-time adult education. Drawing on literature relating to adult learners, class scheduling, chronotype and cognitive performance, it examines whether the timing of online classes warrants greater consideration in the context of changing patterns of work and learning. The Covid-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of online and hybrid working and learning, while advances in digital technologies have expanded opportunities, allowing for greater flexibility in when and where learning takes place. This is particularly relevant to part-time adult learners, who often balance education with employment, family and other responsibilities. The …
