Crab, a kind of marine animal that has a unique status in evolution, has many bioactive substances with special functions. In the present study, we investigated the antitumor effects of four different extracts derived from crab shell (aqueous and methanolic extracts of burned and normal crab shell powder). Aqueous and methanolic extracts of burned crab shell powder were shown to be cytotoxic and inhibit the in vitro proliferation of human laryngeal carcinoma tumor cell lines (Hep-2) and human Rhabdomyosarcoma cell line (RD) and one murine mammary adenocarcinoma tumor cell line (AMN3), in dose and time dependant manner. These results suggest …

Amelioration Of Doxorubicin Induced Cardiotoxicity, Najah R Hadi, Sadiq J Ali, Nadhim Hinti
Al-Qadisiyah Medical Journal
The therapeutic usefulness of doxorubicin (DXR), an anthracycline antibiotic, is limited by its cardiotoxicity. The present study investigated the effects of vitamin E, carvedilol, telmisartan and omega-3 against doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity in rats using biochemical approaches . Telmisartan (1 mg/kg/day) orally, vitamin E(100 mg/kg) orally. carvedilol (10mg/kg) orally and omega-3 (20 mg/kg) orally were administered orally for 7 days followed by doxorubicin (15 mg/kg) was injected intraperitoneally (ip) as a single dose . Rats treated with DXR showed cardiotoxicity as evidenced by elevation of serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity, serum creatin kinase (CK-MB);serum malondialdehyde (MDA) level, catalase activity did not change …

Al-Qadisiyah Medical Journal
This study was performed to determine the effects of Evening primrose oil (EPO) on haemostatic parameters following 30 and 60 days administration of 90 mg/kg (EPO) to healthy male rabbits. The laboratory resulting in significant increase in Prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) assays (p<0.01), platelets count significantly decreased (p<0.01) at both times. While fibrinogen concentration are insignificantly decreased. These effects might be due to inactivation or inhibition of factors affecting coagulation.

Aim of study:To evaluate the association between C-reactive protein (CRP) and type 2 diabetes mellitus .Method:The study sample consisted of (65) patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus( 40) men and (25) women. The CRP was measured for all them and compared with (65) persons without DM as a control group well matched with age and sex to the patient group .BMI for patients in both groups were measured . A p-value of <0.05 was regarded as statistically significant .Result: 40 males and 25 females with type 2 DM with mean age 60.7 years. The increase in CRP was significant ( p value<0.05) in type 2 DM patients who are male with high BMI and increased age while no significant increase in the level of CRP in the control group ( p value > 0.05) .Conclusion : These result suggest, that there is an association between CRP and type2 diabetes mellitus .

Al-Qadisiyah Medical Journal
This study aimed to determine Fe ,Pb , Mn ,Se, Cu ,and Zn levels in the blood of children with anemia , living at Al- Najaf City ,as indicators of environmental pollution in this city. Sixty five children (mean age 7.8 ±0.5) including 34 girls , 28 boys having anemia and the ages matched healthy children 29 girls and 28 boys ,were studied .We observed iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in 35 child (16 girls ,19 boys) ,and only anemia (OA) in 30 child (15 girls ,15 boys). It was found that significant difference of Hb, PCV ,MCV (P<0.01) , and ferritin(P<0.001) values in IDA patients (both girls and boys)were found, when compared with healthy children. The results show that there are significantly higher levels of Pb , Mn , and Zn ,in the serum of children in (IDA) group( both girls and boys) in comparison with their control groups . While Se , and Cu levels were significantly lower in (OA) and(IDA) groups , girls and boys, as related to their control groups. In conclusion ,children with iron deficient anemia are more sensitive to the pollutants and more at risk as compared to healthy children . Their bloods are considered as an index of biologically active metals in the body, reflecting direct interaction of atmosphericpollution of a population.

The aim of this study was to determine serum zinc(Zn),copper (Cu),sodium (Na) and potassuim (K) levels in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) undergoning hemodialysis (HD) and to investigate the influnce of HD duration on these trace elements. The study group included (32)HD pateints and a control group of (32) healthy subjects. Blood samples were drown for determination of serum (Zn) and (Cu) levels which measured by atomic absorbtion spectrophotmetry, and serum (Na) and(K) levels measured by electrolyte analyzer. The mean age was (50.5 ±12.7)yr in the (HD) group and (48.1 ± 20.3)yr in the control group .Laboratory findings showed the …

Valsalva maneuver (VM) is one of the most important tests used to investigate the integrity of the autonomic nervous system (ANS), it can be used to assess the baroreflex activity since the baroreceptors innervated by both sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Therefore (VM) used to investigate the changes in the hemodynamic variables in order to assess the integrity of cardiovascular system. The procedure of (VM) involves four phases through these phases the following measurements take place:1.Measurement of stroke volume (SV) which is the volume of bloodpumped from the heart by each beat using echocardiographic technique.2.Heart rate (HR) is recorded by ECG …
