A Supervised, Online, Home-Based Eccentric Resistance Exercise Program For Patients With Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease, Kedar S. Deshpande, Nosaka, Aus Molan, Isaac S. Raj, John K. Olynyk, Oyekoya T. Ayonrinded
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is the most common non-communicable chronic liver disease worldwide, increasing long-term risk of cirrhosis, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular diseases. Although reducing liver steatosis by increasing physical activity can lower these risks, patients with MASLD often struggle to exercise regularly. We examined the effects of a supervised, home-based, online bodyweight eccentric exercise program on liver and metabolic markers, and physical fitness in patients with MASLD. Methods: Sixteen adults with MASLD (24–91 years) were assigned to an exercise group (n = 9) or a control group receiving lifestyle counselling (n = 7). The …

Advancing Fish Tissue Reference Material Development For Ag Nanoparticles Through A Perfusion Approach, Nathaniel J. Clark, Robert Clough, Adam Laycock, Rachel Smith, Richard D. Handy
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
There is a regulatory need for reliable methods to quantify nanoparticles in biological samples for the hazard assessment and bioaccumulation potential of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs). Single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SP-ICP-MS) is a promising technique, but its application is hindered by the lack of validated sample preparation procedures (e.g., solubilisation) and suitable biological reference materials. This study aimed to develop an in-house biological reference material for ENMs to support analytical method validation. Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were introduced into rainbow trout via cardiac perfusion, with the gills and liver collected as target tissues. Tissues were homogenised using a …

Implementing Hypertension Guidelines Into Clinical Practice, Misti Michele Mays
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Hypertension is a complex chronic disease process, and it is essential to educate the patient on the disease process, as well as on all aspects of self-management. It is essential that providers choose an evidence-based guideline by which they will manage their hypertensive patients. In addition, providers must schedule regular follow-up appointments with their patients, along with a wide variety of other multifactorial components in regard to the management of patients diagnosed with hypertension. In addition, providers have a responsibility to stay informed on new approaches to blood pressure management by reviewing the professional literature on a regular basis. Much …

Propaganda Ai: An Analysis Of Semantic Divergence In Large Language Models, Nay Myat Min, Long H. Pham, Yige Li, Jun Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Large language models (LLMs) can exhibit concept-conditioned semantic divergence: common high-level cues (e.g., ideologies, public figures) elicit unusually uniform, stance-like responses that evade token-trigger audits. This behavior falls in a blind spot of current safety evaluations, yet carries major societal stakes, as such concept cues can steer content exposure at scale. We formalize this phenomenon and present RAVEN (Response Anomaly Vigilance), a black-box audit that flags cases where a model is simultaneously highly certain and atypical among peers by coupling semantic entropy over paraphrastic samples with cross-model disagreement. In a controlled LoRA fine-tuning study, we implant a concept-conditioned stance using …
Coping Under Constraint: How Consumer Vulnerability And Caregiver Status Shape Food Choice And Well-Being, Kerry-Ann V. Forbes, Prachi Gala
Coping Under Constraint: How Consumer Vulnerability And Caregiver Status Shape Food Choice And Well-Being, Kerry-Ann V. Forbes, Prachi Gala
AMTP Proceedings 2026
Caregiving is a chronic and understudied form of consumer vulnerability that reshapes everyday decision-making, particularly in food contexts. This research conceptualizes caregiving as a sustained role-based vulnerability. It proposes a moderated-mediation model in which consumer vulnerability influences coping strategies that subsequently affect food choice and consumer well-being. Drawing on the Theory of Planned Behavior, Coping Theory, and Transformative Consumer Research, the study examines how caregiver status (familial, professional, or non-caregiver) serves as a boundary condition that shapes these relationships. A three-phase mixed-methods design is employed: qualitative interviews to refine constructs, a survey–experiment to test the moderated-mediation model, and an experimental …

Perceptions Of Virginia Dentists And Dental Hygienists Towards Emerging Alternative Dental Hygiene Workforce Provider Models, Lauren B. Mangum
Perceptions Of Virginia Dentists And Dental Hygienists Towards Emerging Alternative Dental Hygiene Workforce Provider Models, Lauren B. Mangum
Dental Hygiene Theses & Dissertations
Background: A perceived shortage of dental hygienists in the United States has been linked to delays in preventive care and concerns about declining oral health outcomes. In response, some states have proposed alternative pathways permitting internationally trained dentists, dental students, and oral preventive assistants (OPAs) with limited or inconsistent education requirements to provide dental hygiene services. Limited evidence exists regarding whether these strategies would effectively address access to care and workforce challenges. Concerns have also been raised about the potential effects of expanding scope of practice for providers with limited education or training on patient safety and quality of care. …

Dissecting The Etiology Of Alcohol Use Disorder By An Integrative Heritable Component Approach, Ivy Garrenton
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is a pervasive condition characterized by complex interplay among genetic, phenotypic, and environmental factors. Although previous studies have identi fied genetic loci associated with alcohol consumption, these efforts have not captured the genetic heterogeneity and gene-environment interactions underlying AUD pathogenesis. To address this critical gap, we developed a novel statistical methodology that integrates phenotypic, genotypic, and environmental data through an environmentally modified Genetic Relationship Matrix (GRM) to derive AUD-related traits with enhanced heritability.
This approach demonstrated superior performance in both simulated and real-world datasets. Traits derived using the environmentally modified GRM exhibited significantly higher estimated heritability …

Hydromedusae are often overlooked in pelagic trophic ecology compared to large scyphozoans. We investigated the diet, prey selectivity, ingestion rates, digestion times, and predation impacts of the native Liriope tetraphylla and non-indigenous species Cnidostoma fallax and Moerisia inkermanica in a subtropical estuary of the southwestern Atlantic. While all three species predominantly consumed copepods, L. tetraphylla exhibited the broadest diet and highest number of preys in gut content (up to 13). Digestion time for L. tetraphylla decreased significantly with increasing temperature, from 94 min at 18°C to 64 min at 28°C, with Q10 values showing that digestion rates roughly double with …

Introduction: With new advancements in obesity medicine, clarity on goals and expectations for successful disease management is limited. This post hoc analysis assessed application of proposed treat-to-target (TtT) thresholds for obesity to the outcome measures of SURMOUNT-5, which randomised participants with obesity to tirzepatide or semaglutide.
Methods: The proportion of participants in each treatment group reaching proposed TtT thresholds for waist to height ratio (WHtR) < 0.53, body mass index (BMI) < 27 kg/m2, or a combination was evaluated. The associations between the thresholds and achieving low disease activity to remission (meeting goals for at least four of five defined cardiometabolic risk parameters) and normalisation or improvement in SF-36v2 physical component score (PCS) from baseline to week 72 were explored.
Results: About 23.1%-33.9% of participants treated with tirzepatide and 14.2%-20.7% treated with semaglutide reached the TtT thresholds, with greater weight reduction than the overall population. About 77% of participants who reached WHtR < 0.53 achieved low disease activity to remission, with an odds ratio of 2.31 (p < 0.001) compared to those who did not reach this target. The BMI threshold was not statistically associated with the assessed outcomes for SF-36v2 PCS.
Conclusion: In this …

AbstractKoalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) give birth to highly altricial young that rely on maternal milk for nutritional support and immune protection in the first year of life. This study applied proteomics to analyse stage-specific shifts in the koala milk proteome across early-, mid-, and late-lactation. Proteins were extracted from seven samples and analysed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Quantitative profiling identified 874, 1220, and 498 proteins in early-, mid- and late-lactation stages, respectively. The most abundant proteins—including β-lactoglobulin, caseins, clusterin, trichosurin, albumin and lactotransferrin—were consistently detected across all stages, reflecting crucial roles in nutrition, immune function, and detoxification. Protein–protein interaction analyses …

Cataract is a leading cause of vision impairment worldwide and are primarily caused by oxidative stress that damages and aggregates lens proteins, leading to lens opacification. However, the eye's anatomical barriers limit the penetration and bioavailability of antioxidant therapies. To address this challenge, a dendrimer-based nanogel with a built-in reactive oxygen species (ROS)-scavenging capability developed by us was employed to deliver the antioxidant N-acetylcysteine (NAC) to the lens. NAC was loaded into a generation-5 PEGylated poly(amidoamine) dendrimer (G5-PEG-TK, termed the GPT) nanogel. The resulting NAC-GPT was characterized for its ROS-scavenging activity, bioavailability, and corneal permeability. The efficacy of NAC-GPT was …

Transcription factor EB (TFEB) is a master regulator of lysosomal biogenesis and cellular clearance pathways. TFEB activity is tightly controlled by multiple post-translational mechanisms, but the exact molecular mechanism controlling its stability has remained elusive. Here, we identify the IκB kinase (IKK) complex as a key regulator of TFEB protein stability through a phosphorylation-ubiquitination cascade. A high-content kinase inhibitor screen reveals that IKK inhibition increases TFEB protein levels, and genetic ablation of IKK components increases TFEB stability, upregulates lysosomal genes, and enhances lysosomal biogenesis and degradative capacity. Mechanistically, we show that IKK phosphorylates TFEB on a cluster of serine residues …
