U.S. Young Adults’ Experience Of Hope, Personal Control, And Well-Being In The Face Of Large-Scale Threats, Julia Conner Jan 2026

U.S. Young Adults’ Experience Of Hope, Personal Control, And Well-Being In The Face Of Large-Scale Threats, Julia Conner

Psychology Honors Papers

Large-scale threats (e.g., climate change, political unrest, economic uncertainty) have many negative effects on young adults’ well-being. Given the widespread and existential nature of these threats, it can be difficult for individuals to maintain hope in the face of them. The present study examines the relationships among hope, locus of control, psychological well-being, concern over large-scale threats, and news use in a sample of 213 young adults from the United States aged 19-27 years. Participants completed several self-report scales and provided a hope narrative. The data show strong positive relationships between greater hope and internal locus of control and more …

Reflections Of A Queer Latvia: How The Past Has Shaped Contemporary Activism, Gray Ruffer Jan 2026

Reflections Of A Queer Latvia: How The Past Has Shaped Contemporary Activism, Gray Ruffer

Slavic Studies Honors Papers

This thesis aims to create a transhistorical map of queer Riga through the tolerance, treatment, and activist moments in Latvia from the early twentieth century to 2025, with special focus on the divided legal and social attitudes toward LGBT identities in different pockets of Riga. By tracing the role the Russo-Soviet occupations on Latvian soil from 1914-1991 had on the structure of governmental organizations, the treatment of the Latvian language and culture, and the social atmosphere in the capital of Riga, this thesis establishes a Latvian national historical memory through memory narratives that focus themselves in authentic Latvian traditionality, as …

The English You Speak Matters: Immigrants, Phonological Roots, And Psychological Perspectives On Accent Discrimination, Sophia Hauschildt Jan 2026

The English You Speak Matters: Immigrants, Phonological Roots, And Psychological Perspectives On Accent Discrimination, Sophia Hauschildt

Psychology Honors Papers

Accent serves as a highly salient social cue that influences how speakers are perceived, particularly in multicultural contexts where linguistic diversity is increasing. The present study examined how English accent affects evaluations of speaker warmth and competence, and how individual differences in cultural intelligence and colour-blind racial attitudes shape these perceptions. Using a between-subjects experimental design, participants (N = 225) were randomly assigned to listen to a standardised speech passage presented in one of five accents: General American English (GAE; control), Spanish-accented English, Chinese-accented English, Hindi-accented English, or Filipino-accented English. Participants then completed measures of speaker evaluation based on …

Searching For The Floridian Sublime In Contrast : An Exploration Of Atmosphere, Memory, And Place In Contemporary Ink Landscapes, Tereza Koniakovska-Bors Jan 2026

Searching For The Floridian Sublime In Contrast : An Exploration Of Atmosphere, Memory, And Place In Contemporary Ink Landscapes, Tereza Koniakovska-Bors

Theses & ETDs

Coming from Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic and a city shaped by a diverse architectural landscape, my experience in Florida has been overwhelmingly influential on my perception of the place and its visual identity. Compared to the historical order of Prague, Florida seems defined by its natural qualities, ecological tensions, and the coexistence of natural forces with modern human life rather than by architectural continuity. Through a series of monochromatic paintings, I aim to capture and explore this distinctive visual atmosphere, inviting viewers to reflect on their own perceptions of Florida’s evolving landscape identity amid ecological and cultural …

The Language Of Collaboration: Analogs In Digital Media, Orion Martins Jan 2026

The Language Of Collaboration: Analogs In Digital Media, Orion Martins

Theses & ETDs

To collaborate is to share meaning together, which is already to collaborate; sharing of meaning defi nes language. This co-emergence of collaboration and language happens through interplay between the known and the unknown—what we expect and what surprises us—held open by trust, which is not a precondition but a leap into uncertainty that allows transformation to emerge. Through three collaborative projects—Palm Bike Court Girl, Unruly Subjects, and Eat My Love—I investigate how this dynamic unfolds in artistic practice, documentary witness, and romantic devotion. Understanding collaboration as the ground of meaning-making matters because learning to hold the tension between known and …

The Joy Of Recognition Vs. The Violence Of Erasure: Gender Queer And Fun Home As Literary Targets And Queer Bibliographies, Alicia Luguri Jan 2026

The Joy Of Recognition Vs. The Violence Of Erasure: Gender Queer And Fun Home As Literary Targets And Queer Bibliographies, Alicia Luguri

Theses & ETDs

In this thesis I examine controversies surrounding Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home and Maia Kobabe’s Gender Queer, while exploring select events of book censorship, theft, and destruction, and how these activities have been employed to specifically target queer, trans, Jewish, and other marginalized communities. I trace the intertwined histories of pornography and the comics medium, and the ways in which this connection has shaped and influenced public opinion, legislation, and the genesis and implementation of the restrictive 1954 Comics Code. Additionally, I argue that as a part of Bechdel’s and Kobabe’s reaction to the heteronormative, homophobic and transphobic threats and pressures …

Global Stock Market And Day-Trading Ecosystem: Structural Dynamics Between Retail And Institutional Forces, Juan David Polania Jan 2026

Global Stock Market And Day-Trading Ecosystem: Structural Dynamics Between Retail And Institutional Forces, Juan David Polania

Theses & ETDs

This paper analyzes the global stock-market and day-trading ecosystem through the structural duality between retail access platforms and institutional liquidity providers. Using Robinhood (retail) and Citadel (institutional) strictly as illustrative anchors, not as case studies, it applies five economic lenses to explain how access, execution, and information co-evolve. Empirical context is drawn from market-cap trends, volume data, volatility series, and Federal Reserve policy cycles. The core finding is that democratization and concentration advance together: retail innovation broadens participation, while institutional market making concentrates liquidity, speed, and data advantage. These forces form a closed feedback loop that delivers efficiency yet encodes …

Teaching That Resonates: Reimagining High School Literature Through Real-World Connections, Lizzie Galanis Jan 2026

Teaching That Resonates: Reimagining High School Literature Through Real-World Connections, Lizzie Galanis

ENG 490 Senior Seminar Capstone

The current high school literature curriculum is overdue for reform. While classic books have value, teaching them in a modern context is crucial so the lessons can be translated to students’ daily lives. Integrating contemporary texts is essential when reimagining the curriculum because students can relate to them and connect with their themes. This paper analyzes five texts that would meaningfully enhance an updated curriculum. These texts promote real-world connections, interdisciplinary learning, and multicultural exposure. Schools and educators must reassess both what they teach and how they teach it to diversify the content and evolve with the times. Students should …

Talking Black: The Construction Of Blackness In Film, D'Andre M. Person Jan 2026

Talking Black: The Construction Of Blackness In Film, D'Andre M. Person

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

Media, such as film, plays a pivotal role in representing marginalized groups to general audiences. The portrayal of Black people in advertisements, novels, art, and film has perpetuated harmful stereotypes which associate Black men and women with negative traits that justify their marginalization, such as the "Coon" stereotype that frames Black men as lazy or the "Mammy" stereotype that positions Black women as subservient. Stereotypes in film are produced through images, but language plays a vital role in constructing general audiences' understanding of Black people as well. Through a rhetorical analysis of seven films released between 2016 and 2026, I …

Access To Primary Care And Health Care Fragmentation, Sharona Hoffman, Ishani Ganguli Jan 2026

Access To Primary Care And Health Care Fragmentation, Sharona Hoffman, Ishani Ganguli

Faculty Publications

This Article examines the growing crisis of long primary care wait times and the health care fragmentation that is associated with them. Patients who feel ill or are worried about new symptoms must often wait weeks or longer for appointments. In the wake of excessive wait times for primary care physician (PCP) appointments, patients increasingly turn to convenience care models such as urgent care centers, retail clinics, direct-to-consumer telemedicine, and at-home testing. While these alternatives offer prompt attention, they sacrifice other core functions of primary care and may exacerbate poor health outcomes and inequities. The Article argues that long wait …

Scandal And The Late Ancient Christian Historian, Jennifer Barry Jan 2026

Scandal And The Late Ancient Christian Historian, Jennifer Barry

Cultural and Philosophical Inquiry Articles

This article argues that scandal functions as a key narrative technology in late ancient Christian historiography. Rather than treating scandal as anecdote or moral failure, ecclesiastical historians use it as a structured way of arranging deviant bodies, contested practices, and moments of exposure to produce claims about Christian truth. Through recurring controversies, this study traces how biblical stories are reworked by authors such as Eusebius, Socrates, Sozomen, and Theodoret to stabilize doctrine, police boundaries, and articulate Christian identity. Across these writers, scandal emerges as a method of historical control, not merely a record of past conflict but a means of …

Toward A Speculative Librarianship, Michael Kirby Jan 2026

Toward A Speculative Librarianship, Michael Kirby

Publications and Research

(Academic) citation is a representational practice of hollow, ruined potential professional accumulation of intellectual capital. Critical librarianship finds itself in the same situation as Saint Anthony: beset by interpretive demons (Freud, Nietzsche, Marx), nearing total evaluative exhaustion, wandering in a theoretical desert of its own creation. “Where am I?” the lonely figure shouts as he’s lifted into the air. Prayer, even as a last resort, seems intolerable. What happens when critique loses its way?

Measuring Civic And Citizenship Education Through Large-Scale Assessments: Insights From The International Civic And Citizenship Education Study (Iccs), Wolfram Schulz, Valeria Damiani

Civics and Citizenship Assessment

This chapter from the open access book ‘Promoting K-12 Civic Learning and Engagement Through Assessment’ edited  by Hamilton, Rikoon and  Kidd, discusses ways of measuring aspects of civic and citizenship education (CCE) cross-nationally with a specific focus on the International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) commissioned by the IEA (International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement). The chapter starts with a brief overview of the main characteristics of the study, the legacy with previous IEA surveys of civic education, and the assessment design including a description of the cognitive and affective-behavioral dimensions that are measured in the …

Clemency For Justice Reform: A Restorative Pardon Proposal Using Conditional Pardons, Stephanie A. Clark Jan 2026

Clemency For Justice Reform: A Restorative Pardon Proposal Using Conditional Pardons, Stephanie A. Clark

Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality

President Donald Trump’s pardons to people convicted for the January 6, 2021 attacks on the Capitol intensified the nation’s divisiveness. They also illustrate why proper clemency must be restored and used for its intended purpose to ameliorate injustice under the law. Clemency is not meant to be a “get out of jail free card” solely for family, friends, and political supporters. It is a constitutional mechanism designed to relieve consequences out of step with a criminal offense or to salve broad public hurt. When clemency is misused, it undermines public confidence and the principle that equal opportunity should exist for …

The Irrationality Of Punishing Homelessness, Nice, Julie A. Jan 2026

The Irrationality Of Punishing Homelessness, Nice, Julie A.

Santa Clara Law Review

The Supreme Court upheld the criminalization of public survival by unhoused people in City of Grants Pass v. Johnson in June 2024. This article examines that decision and considers why Grants Pass had not enforced its camping ban against unhoused people when the author visited the city one year later. One important reason is that Oregon had enacted legislation requiring that any camping bans in the state be objectively reasonable considering the totality of circumstances, including the impact on unhoused persons. Given the ongoing lack of shelter in Grants Pass after the Supreme Court’s ruling, the city’s unhoused residents obtained …

Momager Dearest: Why The Kidfluencer Industry Requires Stronger Regulation, Lewis, Annabel Jan 2026

Momager Dearest: Why The Kidfluencer Industry Requires Stronger Regulation, Lewis, Annabel

Santa Clara Law Review

In the last twenty years, social media has undergone a massive transformation. What began as a medium to connect with friends has evolved into a multi-billion-dollar industry where influencers reign supreme, profiting from their online personas. This opportunity is not limited to those old enough to operate their own accounts.

The recent rise of child influencers, known as “kidfluencers,” enables parents to profit from sharing aspects of their children’s lives on the internet. These accounts are not without benefit. Beyond their financial appeal, kidfluencer accounts can serve as a means for parents to bond with their children and may open …

The Impact Of Home Birth Integration On Maternal-Neonatal Outcomes And Patient Satisfaction: An Integrative Review, Mary E. Hillaker, Jennifer K. Jacobitz

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Home birth is a safe option for low-risk populations. As awareness of home birth increases, so do the families choosing home birth. Governing bodies recommend well integrated maternal health systems, yet the impact of level of integration on perinatal outcomes and patient satisfaction has not been specifically examined. The purpose of this integrative review is to identify the impact home birth integration has on maternal and neonatal outcomes, patient satisfaction, and how communities can improve their integration level.
Methods: A keyword search of current literature was conducted using CINAHL, PubMed, and Scopus databases. An additional hand search of 2 …

Evaluating Llms For Cpe Identification In Iot Reconnaissance, Christopher Davisson Jan 2026

Evaluating Llms For Cpe Identification In Iot Reconnaissance, Christopher Davisson

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

Vulnerability identification during penetration testing relies on rigid string-matching to map network scan data to Common Platform Enumeration (CPE) identifiers and downstream Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs). The approach frequently fails on physical Internet of Things (IoT) devices, which produce non-standard, irregular service banners that resist deterministic parsing. Large Language Models can reason through these fuzzy associations, but cloud-hosted models introduce cost, latency, and operational security concerns when processing reconnaissance data from live networks. This thesis asks whether locally-hosted open-weight Large Language Models (LLMs) can perform this task well enough to be useful, and how performance varies with model scale, …
