The Reconnection Experience: A Black Pastor's Journey Back To God And Self, Lindsay Mcghee Alexander Jan 2026

The Reconnection Experience: A Black Pastor's Journey Back To God And Self, Lindsay Mcghee Alexander

Doctor of Ministry

NPO

The Need/Problem/Opportunity (NPO) statement guiding this project is: Pastors in the 8th Episcopal District of the AME Church feel disconnected from God and themselves.

Key Insights

The research revealed that pastoral disconnection is driven less by lack of skill and more by identity loss, performance pressure, and the absence of safe spaces for vulnerability. Spiritual formation remains largely absent from Black pastors' lives and churches. Cultural and denominational expectations reward quantitative data over spiritual growth. Self-care and inner work are not recognized as integral to ministry success or effectiveness. Many pastors operate from “doing” rather than “being,” leading to …

Equip: Developing Confident, Christ-Centered Volunteers, Alyssa Mclaughlin

Doctor of Ministry

NPO statement: Volunteers within Cedar Hills Church feel unsure of what we believe, unclear on their purpose, and unprepared to disciple others in their specific ministry contexts. Without intentional training and equipping, these barriers keep capable people on the sidelines instead of stepping confidently into the mission of Jesus.

Key benefits or insights that emerged: Research and early implementation showed that volunteers engage more when equipping is relational, practical, and connected to real life. Adults were more willing to participate when they could share from their own experiences and practice their faith, rather than sit through content-heavy teaching. Participants gained …

Renewed: A Journey Toward Resilient And Relational Leadership, Molly Bradley Lacroix Jan 2026

Renewed: A Journey Toward Resilient And Relational Leadership, Molly Bradley Lacroix

Doctor of Ministry

Adverse religious experiences cause spiritual, emotional, and relational wounds. Research on spiritual harm locates its origins in the misuse of power. High-control religious environments are preoccupied with authority, submission, silencing dissent, and shaming those who question or doubt. Clearly, the nature of leadership is key in addressing and preventing harm. Spiritually safe leaders empower people, lead with humility, seek feedback, and take accountability for mistakes. Research on the role of clergy reveals complex roles, relentless demands, burnout, and the impact of secondary trauma on clergy well-being. Additionally, clergy are often expected to operate beyond their areas of competence and report …

An Environmentally Relevant Phthalate Mixture Impairs Ovulatory Prostaglandin And Progesterone Receptor Pathways In Human Granulosa Cells In Vitro, Katie L. Land, Hong Xu, James W. Akin, Patrick R. Hannon Jan 2026

An Environmentally Relevant Phthalate Mixture Impairs Ovulatory Prostaglandin And Progesterone Receptor Pathways In Human Granulosa Cells In Vitro, Katie L. Land, Hong Xu, James W. Akin, Patrick R. Hannon

Obstetrics and Gynecology Faculty Publications

Ovulatory defects are the leading cause of female infertility. Widespread exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals, such as phthalates, may contribute to the high prevalence of failed ovulation among infertile women. Using primary ovarian granulosa cells obtained from women, we tested the hypothesis that exposure to an environmentally relevant mixture of phthalate metabolites (MPTmix) impairs essential mediators of the ovulatory process, including progesterone (P4), progesterone receptor (PGR), and prostaglandins (PGs). The composition of the MPTmix was derived from urinary phthalate levels in women. Ovarian granulosa cells, obtained from in vitro fertilization patients, were acclimated in culture to regain responsiveness to hCG (human …

Aeroelastic Simulation Of Shape Adaptive Wing, Allan Alfred Kozich Iii Jan 2026

Aeroelastic Simulation Of Shape Adaptive Wing, Allan Alfred Kozich Iii

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Morphing wings provide aerodynamic qualities that normal fixed wings cannot, such as the ability to improve endurance yet maintain maneuverability, overcome strong gusts, vibrations, and shocks, and handle both ideal flight for both high and low speeds. A critical application of the new generation of morphing wings is the ability to overcome and affect the onset flutter, a self-excited oscillatory instability that has led to the destruction of aircrafts. This work investigates aeroelastic behavior and measurement of a meta-material structured "smart" wing and its attempt to delay the effect of flutter. The variable wing tip model is analyzed through finite …

“Don’T Let Your Disability Be Your Weakness, Let It Be Your Greatest Strength”: A Phenomenological Study Of Nursing Students Who Are Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing, Randa Melms

Dissertations of Practice

This phenomenological study examined the lived experiences of nursing students who are deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH) as they navigated nursing education and the clinical learning environment. Using critical disability theory (CDT) as a guiding framework, the study explored how participants understood, negotiated, and redefined their identities within a profession historically shaped by hearing norms. Four essential themes emerged: reframing disability as expertise, navigating institutional supports and structural barriers, negotiating clinical spaces designed around hearing bodies, and drawing strength from relational networks. These findings can inform more inclusive practices among higher education professionals and clinical educators, helping reduce disparities …

One Nation, Bound By Drag: Tokyo’S Drag Culture As A Modern Subentity Of National Identity, Emmeline Schubert Jan 2026

One Nation, Bound By Drag: Tokyo’S Drag Culture As A Modern Subentity Of National Identity, Emmeline Schubert

Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research

Throughout Japan’s history, performance has played a significant role in the construction and expression of gender and identity; drag culture in 21st-century Tokyo represents a contemporary subcultural form of this tradition. As drag publics become increasingly visible in urban Japan, it raises the question of how subcultures, competing identities, and social rebellions relate to dominant understandings of national identity. This paper explores the idea that Tokyo’s drag culture functions as a counterpublic of imagined communities that negotiate belonging through performance. While Japanese national identity is frequently defined as homogeneous and ethnocentric, an examination of gender expression in kabuki, onnagata, and …

Exploring The Gender Gap In Trump Supporters: Why “Real Women Vote For Trump”, Emma Kudelka Jan 2026

Exploring The Gender Gap In Trump Supporters: Why “Real Women Vote For Trump”, Emma Kudelka

Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research

This paper examines the types of women who support Donald Trump and explores the reasons behind their alignment with him, despite his seemingly contradictory policies toward women. It begins by analyzing the persistent and modest gender gap across the last three election cycles in which Trump was a candidate. The paper then outlines the demographic and attitudinal profile of female Trump supporters—predominantly white, non-college-educated women who often hold traditional views, including sexist or racist attitudes. These views are frequently rooted in their demographic backgrounds and upbringing, particularly the effects of gendered political socialization, which may shape their attitudes toward political …

Making Sense Of East Asian Languages, Keiko Konoeda, Linh Hoang, Geizuo Mahai, Nary Phon, Georgia Green, Ana Grieve, James Soifer

Open Educational Resources

In Winter 2026, the Bates College Asian Studies course “Making Sense of East Asian Languages” launched this open collection of supplementary readings. This collection helps students of Chinese and Japanese explore the histories behind the languages they study. Often, language courses focus on mastering a "standard" version without looking at its context. These readings bridge that gap.

Each entry investigates how certain language varieties became the national standard and what happened to other varieties and languages that were left out. By looking at these historical and colonial contexts, the collection helps students understand the power dynamics that shape language today. …

Open Educational Resources

This assignment introduces students to collaborative inquiry, AI-assisted research, and critical source evaluation within the context of contemporary social issues. Working in groups, students brainstorm a course-related social problem, develop an exploratory research question, and generate preliminary explanations grounded in personal experience, common sense, and course concepts. They then use SciSpace Copilot to gather scholarly sources and apply the CRAAP test to evaluate credibility and relevance. Students subsequently compare these findings with responses generated by ChatGPT, analyzing similarities and differences in scope, reasoning, and evidence. Through structured reflection, students critically assess how AI shapes the research and information-gathering process. As …

Do Sleep And Age Concurrently And Longitudinally Predict Children's Frustration Tolerance?, Mavery P. Allen

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Frustration is experienced when there is interference with one’s goal or progress towards one’s goal. This study sought to examine how age and sleep affect child frustration through the observation of 2 experimental tasks, each a year apart. This study included data from 100 children (boys = 54) ages 3 to 5 years (M = 3.86) at Wave 1. There are 2 waves, occurring a year apart. The first task in Wave 1 consisted of giving a child keys to a locked, clear box with intriguing toys, but unbeknownst to them, the keys did not work. The second task consisted …

Transgender Women In Sports: A Test Case For State Legislative Protections, Payal Doctor Jan 2026

Transgender Women In Sports: A Test Case For State Legislative Protections, Payal Doctor

City University of New York Law Review

For decades, transgender people have been fighting for the right to participate in sports leagues consistent with their gender identity. Much of this fight has played out on the federal stage, but recently both the federal government and federal courts have become hostile to transgender rights broadly, and transgender rights in sports in particular. This Comment examines an alternate but increasingly promising avenue for the vindication of transgender rights in sports: state law. Using a New York lawsuit brought by a women’s roller derby team, Long Island Roller Rebels v. County of Nassau, as a case study, this Comment …

Riding The Line: A Cost To Value Analysis Of Roller Coasters And The Factors Which Contribute To Their Worth, Clayton Englert

Integrated Studies

When an amusement park is in consideration for a new roller coaster, it can represent a significant financial, cultural and operational decision that must be made. This decision requires a careful balance between the cost and perceived value of the attraction, referred to as the cost to value ratio within the paper. This project aims to examine the multifaceted considerations that influence roller coaster development, highlighting research that shows successful attractions emerging from the understanding of historical precedent, cultural context, design innovation, choice of manufacturer, theming, operations, accessibility, and long term maintenance costs.

The project develops the argument by first …

Judging Art: Copyright, Creativity, And The Meaning Of Art In The Eyes Of The Law, Scott J. Sholder

Marquette Intellectual Property & Innovation Law Review

This Article examines how copyright law defines creativity and authorship in an era of rapidly evolving artistic expression, with particular emphasis on generative artificial intelligence. Tracing the development of U.S. copyright law from its constitutional foundations through modern case law, the author explores the legal standards governing originality, fixation, human authorship, and the idea-expression dichotomy. The Article analyzes how these principles have been applied to both traditional and emerging forms of art, including conceptual, performance, appropriation, digital, and AI-generated works. It also examines recent guidance from the U.S. Copyright Office and evolving judicial decisions addressing the copyrightability of AI-assisted and …

Political Elections In The New Wave Of Media: The Celebrification Of The Presidency, Camille B. Moore

Anthós

This article examines the impact of social media on journalism leading up to the 2024 United States presidential election and how expectations of candidates have changed. By exploring the degradation of discourse in news and how polarization and cognitive biases have intensified with the widespread adoption of social media, previous candidate conventions have begun to crumble. This has, and will continue to have, a large impact on voting and democracy in America, as scholars have noted since the beginning of the 2000’s, in examining a shift in news preferences as pop culture gains influence. This work further examines recent scholarship …

Investigating The Impact Of Cyanobacterial Harmful Algal Blooms On Freshwater Bivalves, Destiny Devlin Jan 2026

Investigating The Impact Of Cyanobacterial Harmful Algal Blooms On Freshwater Bivalves, Destiny Devlin

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) threaten freshwater ecosystems by producing toxins that disrupt aquatic organism functions and pose risks to human health. This study investigated how exposure to toxin-producing cyanobacteria affects the behavior and toxin accumulation of Asian clams (Corbicula fluminea) under controlled laboratory conditions. Asian clams were collected from a freshwater site in New Jersey, maintained in greenhouse bins, and fed either Microcystis novacekii (non-toxin-forming, control N=3) or Microcystis aeruginosa (toxin-forming, experimental N=3) at 100,000 cells/mL for 28 days. Weekly behavioral assays were conducted to track shell opening, burying, clustering, valve closure, foot extension, and time to first opening. Toxin …

The Boundaries Of Corporate Politicking, Ashlee A. Paxton-Turner Jan 2026

The Boundaries Of Corporate Politicking, Ashlee A. Paxton-Turner

Law Faculty Publications

As corporations become red brands and blue brands (whether purposely or accidentally), they are participating in the American political landscape in ways distinct from lobbying and political spending. Specifically, corporations are increasingly making statements or launching ad campaigns that appear to support one side (or the other) of a political or social debate. This Article refers to that activity as “corporate politicking.” Unlike political spending or lobbying, corporate politicking lacks a legal definition and is far less regulated—whether internally or externally.

This Article’s central contribution is an administrable framework to demarcate corporate politicking from other corporate activities and decisions. It …
