Symmetry, Presumptions, And The Judges Design, Murat C. Mungan
Symmetry, Presumptions, And The Judges Design, Murat C. Mungan
Faculty Scholarship
An instrumental variables approach called ‘the judges design’ used frequently in social sciences relies on an assumption called ‘average monotonicity’. This assumption pertains to how different judges’ (or other classifiers’) decision making processes relate to each other. Violations of it are hard to detect, which raises the importance of it being supported by a plausible theory. Decisions of judges who solve Bayesian decision problems violate average monotonicity as long as the signals they process are symmetric and they do not possess strong presumptions. This result is extended to cases where judge presumptions are symmetrically distributed and may include strong presumptions. …

Information Law Pluralism, Hannah Bloch-Wehba
Faculty Scholarship
Information-intensive activities are reshaping political, social, and economic institutions. As they respond to these shifts, legislators and regulators are embracing information as a regulatory device for tech. Far from limiting themselves to public disclosure, consumer notice, and other traditional mechanisms of fostering transparency and information flows, however, legislators are using other, more nuanced tools to incentivize regulated entities to obtain, generate, and share information.
This Article maps the landscape of the emerging information-based regimes for regulating tech and assesses their conceptual and practical implications. It canvasses an extensive set of recently enacted laws regulating the information economy and shows that, …
Equal Justice & Generative Ai, Milan R. Markovic
Equal Justice & Generative Ai, Milan R. Markovic
Faculty Scholarship
The United States has long suffered from unequal access to justice, with countless low-and middle-income Americans forced to navigate the legal system alone. Recently, prominent judges, lawyers, and scholars have seized on generative AI as a potential corrective. These techno-optimists maintain that ChatGPT and other large language models can demystify the law and address unmet legal needs. Chief Justice John Roberts has proclaimed that AI-based tools "have the welcome potential to smooth out any mismatch between available resources and urgent needs in our court system."
Although AI will be an increasingly important source of legal assistance for underserved populations, the …

Division of Cardiology Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to describe the implementation of a new Extracorporeal Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (ECPR) program in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. We also provide a novel comparison of outcomes between patients cannulated vs excluded from cannulation for ECPR after initial field activation.
METHODS: A prospective observational study of ECPR activations between September 2021 and February 2025. Patients meeting initial eligibility criteria for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA)-namely based on age, bystander-CPR, and initial shockable rhythm-were transported to the emergency department where the ECPR team completed cannulation based on further biochemical criteria. Medical records were used to collect data after …

Wagner, Dolores Grosso, Neal Flomenberg, Usama Gergis
Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers
Myelofibrosis is a chronic myeloproliferative disorder primarily affecting older adults, and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) remains the only curative treatment option. However, HSCT for myelofibrosis presents significant challenges, including high nonrelapse mortality (NRM) and an increased risk of graft failure. In this 20-year retrospective study, we evaluated outcomes for 32 myelofibrosis patients who underwent HSCT at our institution, with particular focus on a two-step transplant approach designed to optimize T-cell dosing by separating the lymphoid and myeloid graft components, with cyclophosphamide administered after the lymphoid infusion and before infusion of CD34-selected stem cells. Eighteen patients underwent transplantation using …

Comprehensive Evaluation Of At(N) Imaging Biomarkers For Predicting Cognitive Decline, Tom Earnest, Braden Yang, Deydeep Kothapalli, Aristeidis Sotiras, Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative
2020-Current year OA Pubs
INTRODUCTION: Few studies have investigated how different Alzheimer's disease biomarker definitions affect predictions of cognitive decline.
METHODS: We predicted cognitive decline using 42 biomarker definitions spanning amyloid beta, tau, and neurodegeneration in 383 ADNI participants with baseline neuroimaging and longitudinal cognitive assessments. We identified optimal predictors for each pathology and variable type (continuous, binary, non-binary categorical) using nested cross-validation. Models were compared against support vector machines (SVMs) incorporating brain-wide pathology. In a subsample, we compared imaging-based biomarkers with biofluids (cerebrospinal fluid and plasma).
RESULTS: We observed substantial variability in accuracy, even for measures of the same pathology. Tau biomarkers were …

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a biologically heterogeneous condition with vascular, proteinopathic, metabolic, and immune processes jointly shaping its clinical expression, trajectory of progression, and response to therapeutic intervention. Common AD co-pathologies such as cerebral amyloid angiopathy, Lewy body pathology, α-synuclein, and transactive response DNA-binding protein of 43 kDa (TDP-43)/limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy are also increasingly connected with cognitive decline and therapeutic response. Significant advances in biomarkers, including seed amplification assays, proteomic signatures, and emerging positron emission tomography tracers bolster the field's understanding of a biological staging model and discovery of previously unrecognized co-pathologies. The Fall 2025 Alzheimer's Association Research Roundtable …
Understanding Processes Involved In Firefighter/Ems Resilience And Suicidality: A Mixed Methods Analysis, Benjamin H. Barnette
Understanding Processes Involved In Firefighter/Ems Resilience And Suicidality: A Mixed Methods Analysis, Benjamin H. Barnette
Clinical Psychology Dissertations
First responders in the fire service and emergency medical services (EMS) are the subject of research focused on career suicide risk, occupational hazards, and psychological resilience; however, the nature of the relationships between these three variables is not well understood. This study employed a mixed methods design to test the moderating role of resilience in the relationship between the severity of critical incident exposure and two distinct processes involved in suicidality: suicidogenic cognitions and the acquired capability for suicide. A total of 248 eligible participants with experience in firefighting and/or EMS responded to an online survey. Psychological resilience was negatively …

Ionizing radiation benefits medical treatments and diagnostics. However, it also poses significant health risks, such as from the scattering radiation and unintended exposure. Lead is a common shielding material used for its excellent gamma ray attenuation performance, but it presents ergonomic and environmental challenges. This study assesses the structural and potential radiation absorption properties of the tin-polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composites. The composites were fabricated with different metal concentrations and tested for radiation protection efficiency (RPE), structural characteristics, chemical structure, and porosity. Gamma-ray spectroscopy was used to characterize radiation, with Cd-109 as a primary source. Pure tin/PDMS (PT) had the highest RPE …
