Bilingual Beginnings: Expressive Language And Socio-Emotional Development In Early Childhood, Molly C. Mccormick
Bilingual Beginnings: Expressive Language And Socio-Emotional Development In Early Childhood, Molly C. Mccormick
Scripps Senior Theses
Although research on bilingualism has expanded rapidly in recent years, the majority focuses on cognitive advantages or receptive vocabulary, or the words children understand. Far less attention has been given to how expressive language, the words children produce, and its potential role as the mechanism linking bilingual exposure to socio-emotional development. Although dual-language learners sometimes appear to have relatively limited expressive vocabularies in one language, these differences tend to reflect patterns of language use and input quality rather than true developmental delays. Even so, temporary differences in expressive skills can be especially meaningful during children’s formative years, when they rely …
Legal Stories Without Villains, Alison Peck
Legal Stories Without Villains, Alison Peck
Law Faculty Scholarship
Lawyers have always been storytellers, and cognitive science is increasingly demonstrating that human beings are wired to learn through story. But legal stories may have a dark side if, as theorists have recently suggested, stories motivate pro-social action by reinforcing in-group identification and out-group hatred. In an increasingly divided polity, are we doomed to stories that drive us toward social disintegration? A solution to the legal storyteller’s dilemma may be found in an ancient source: Aristotle’s Poetics. By crafting legal stories that track the elements of the Tragedy as described by Aristotle and adapted by modern storytellers from Broadway …

Good Food In The Neighborhood: Localizing Nutritious Food Access, Joseph Pool
Good Food In The Neighborhood: Localizing Nutritious Food Access, Joseph Pool
Honors Program Theses
Given contemporary changes to federal budget priorities and recent challenges to federal food access funding, this research explores the potential benefits of entrusting state-level and municipal-level policymakers with food access policy. More specifically, this research suggests that “localizing” food access has the unique benefit of not just addressing the affordability of food, but the physical accessibility of it. As observed in the previous literature and expounded upon here, food provisioning requires consideration of nutrition, physical accessibility, and financial affordability. Programs that only address one of these priorities fail to adequately help people receive the food they need. Through policy analysis …
When In Doubt, Dream: A Media Ecology Approach To How Presidential Campaign Ads Structure The American Dream, Amit Sewnauth
When In Doubt, Dream: A Media Ecology Approach To How Presidential Campaign Ads Structure The American Dream, Amit Sewnauth
Honors Program Theses
This thesis examines how presidential campaign advertisements construct and reshape the American Dream. Drawing on Jim Cullen’s understanding of the Dream as a flexible and evolving concept and media ecology scholarship, particularly Neil Postman’s writing on television and public discourse, the project analyzes selected campaign ads from 1964 to 2024 provided by The Living Room Candidate. Through close readings of these advertisements, this project finds that the American Dream is actively reconstructed by presidential campaigns as an ideal that must be protected, extended, or restored. The analysis pays attention to how television and visual media structure these messages through pacing, …
A Patient-Centered Approach To Physician-Assisted Death For Patients With Treatment-Resistant Major Depressive Disorder, Moc Lan Nguyen
A Patient-Centered Approach To Physician-Assisted Death For Patients With Treatment-Resistant Major Depressive Disorder, Moc Lan Nguyen
Honors Program Theses
In medical ethics, the arguments for allowing physician-assisted death (PAD) access for physically and terminally ill patients are well-accepted. These arguments mainly stem from the rise of support for patient autonomy and recent criticisms of paternalism. While this notion in support of PAD is generally held in various medical disciplines, psychiatry remains staunchly couched in their conviction of paternalism. Compounded with the principle of suicide prevention, psychiatry is reluctant to accept PAD for its mentally ill patients as it goes against their profession’s role responsibilities. Furthermore, there is plenty of skepticism regarding mentally ill patients’ competency, which calls into question …

Indirect Effects Of Coral Bleaching On Tursiops Truncatus Diet And Foraging Behavior In Bocas Del Toro, Panama, Annabel Fiero
Indirect Effects Of Coral Bleaching On Tursiops Truncatus Diet And Foraging Behavior In Bocas Del Toro, Panama, Annabel Fiero
Scripps Senior Theses
Indirect effects, where another species or factor mediates the effects of a given species, are critical to ecosystem structure and resilience. Shifts in fish community structure, as a result of rapidly declining coral reefs in the Caribbean due to warming-induced bleaching, pose a threat to apex predators like Tursiops truncatus (bottlenose dolphins). Branching corals create habitat niches for numerous fish species. These fish rely on coral for food and habitat, and in turn provide food for upper trophic levels. Prior research has highlighted how coral bleaching will disrupt Acroporid reef building corals and fish community structure, but the effects of …
Between Trends And Truths: Tiktok Therapy-Speak And Mental Health, Zoe Stephens
Between Trends And Truths: Tiktok Therapy-Speak And Mental Health, Zoe Stephens
Scripps Senior Theses
The rise of therapy-speak on social media has introduced mental health terminology into everyday discourse among young adults, yet its psychological impacts remain unclear (Chevalier, 2024; Jain et al., 2025). The present study investigated the effects of TikTok videos containing therapy-speak on stigma toward mental illness, mental health awareness, and mental health literacy. Using a between-groups experimental design, 95 U.S. college students aged 18 to 24 were randomly assigned to view either therapy-speak TikTok content or neutral TikTok content. Participants subsequently completed three post-exposure measures: the Mental Health Literacy Scale (MHLS; O’Connor & Casey, 2015), a self-constructed Mental Health Awareness …

How Semiflightless Birds Adapt: A Survey From Barú, Costa Rica, Eli P. Laloudakis
How Semiflightless Birds Adapt: A Survey From Barú, Costa Rica, Eli P. Laloudakis
Scripps Senior Theses
When we think of birds, we think of flight. Because of this, scientific research often focuses on how birds evolved flight and how their wings function during flight. However, not all birds can fly or fly well, as wings wax and wane on developmental, seasonal, and evolutionary time scales (Dial and Heers 2021). Consequently, rudimentary wings can be found in developing birds, secondarily flightless or semiflightless birds, birds that undergo simultaneous molts, and extinct theropods with “protowings” (structures that preceded fully functional wings). Secondarily flightless and semiflightless birds often evolve where there is no/low predation, abundant year-round food supply, and …
Lead Biosorption By Oceanobacillus Profundus Kbz 3-2: Strategies For Bioremediation Systems In Kabwe, Danielle S. Desmarteau
Lead Biosorption By Oceanobacillus Profundus Kbz 3-2: Strategies For Bioremediation Systems In Kabwe, Danielle S. Desmarteau
Scripps Senior Theses
Lead contamination remains a significant global public health concern, particularly in Kabwe, Zambia, the site of a former lead mining operation. Bioremediation, which utilizes biological materials and processes to remove environmental contaminants, represents a promising approach for addressing lead pollution. However, the development of effective bioremediation systems requires a detailed understanding of the mechanisms underlying metal removal and the feasibility of implementation in low-resource settings. Oceanobacillus profundus KBZ 3-2, a bacterium isolated from Kabwe mine waste, has demonstrated the ability to remove lead from aqueous environments. This study proposes to investigate the mechanism of lead biosorption by this organism, …
Assessing The Effect Of Wildfire-Specific Air Pollutants On Copd Hospitalizations In Los Angeles County, Kimberly Young
Assessing The Effect Of Wildfire-Specific Air Pollutants On Copd Hospitalizations In Los Angeles County, Kimberly Young
Scripps Senior Theses
As the fourth leading cause of death in the world, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) is one of the most severe respiratory disorders characterized by airway inflammation. For the past two decades, climate change has exacerbated the prevalence of wildfires in California due to rising temperatures and lower precipitation. With the influx of wildfires, poor atmospheric air quality continues to be a serious health problem in the Los Angeles area, especially after the recent Eaton fire in January of 2025. My study hopes to assess whether the air pollutants particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5), particulate matter 10 (PM10 …
Recipes And Resources: Food As A Decolonial Tool For The 1.5 Generation, Reyna Guadalupe Silva Carrillo
Recipes And Resources: Food As A Decolonial Tool For The 1.5 Generation, Reyna Guadalupe Silva Carrillo
Scripps Senior Theses
Food is more than just nourishment for the 1.5-generation, people who come to the United States as children and now navigate between cultures; it is a language of memory, resistance, and survival across borders. This project raises an important question: how do 1.5-generation students navigate identity, belonging, and survival through food, and how can a zine serve as a medium for sharing community knowledge? My project argues that food is an important way 1.5-generation students use language to remember, resist, and survive across borders. Using pláticas, an informal conversation-based approach, this project focuses on the experience of 1.5-generation students at …
Improving Maternal Health: Investigating The Early Impacts Of Medicaid Coverage Of Doulas In Oregon, Miriam Akhmetshin
Improving Maternal Health: Investigating The Early Impacts Of Medicaid Coverage Of Doulas In Oregon, Miriam Akhmetshin
Scripps Senior Theses
While the U.S. spends more per-capita than any country on healthcare, we experience the worst maternal health outcomes of high-income nations. In addition to hefty healthcare bills, an overwhelming majority of mothers experience pregnancy-related health issues that decrease productivity and utility. Thus, it is critical to research cost-effective solutions that can improve maternal health and promote equitable outcomes. Doulas are trained non-medical professionals who support mothers and families before, during and after birth. As a growing body of medical literature points to the role of doulas in decreasing costly medical interventions, insurance companies have begun covering their services. In 2014, …
Food Stamp Participation And Health Outcomes In Ca Immigrants, Esther Kang
Food Stamp Participation And Health Outcomes In Ca Immigrants, Esther Kang
Scripps Senior Theses
The U.S. social welfare system includes programs aiming to increase access to nutritious food to reduce nutrition insecurity. However, studies suggest that immigrants continue to face disproportionate risks of nutrition insecurity and may face barriers to enrollment due to legal status. This study, using secondary data from the 2023 California Health Interview Survey, examines the associations between food stamp participation, food insecurity, and clinical diagnosis of diabetes among adult U.S.-born, naturalized, and non-citizen adults in California. The findings suggest that those enrolled in food stamps are more likely to report food insecurity than those who are not enrolled, and that …
Enhancing Discharge Knowledge In Adolescent Behavioral Health Patients By Evaluating Nurses’ Use Of The Teach-Back Method, Mark Perpose
Enhancing Discharge Knowledge In Adolescent Behavioral Health Patients By Evaluating Nurses’ Use Of The Teach-Back Method, Mark Perpose
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
This quality improvement project evaluated the impact of a teach-back refresher course on nurses’ discharge education practices within an inpatient adolescent behavioral health setting. Nurses participated in refresher training and completed pre- and post-intervention surveys, while patient surveys assessed discharge understanding and readiness. Findings demonstrated positive patient satisfaction, understanding of discharge instructions, and confidence managing care at home. Ongoing workflow and communication barriers highlighted the need for continued staff development and reinforcement of teach-back to support consistent discharge education practices and improve transitional care outcomes.

Empowering Stroke Survivors Through Video Education On Post-Stroke Depression, Breanna Ho, Odavie Okonda
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: Post-stroke depression (PSD) is a common complication following stroke and is associated with poor rehabilitation, reduced quality of life, increased rehospitalization, and higher mortality. PSD remains underrecognized and undertreated due to limited emotional health education during discharge planning. Objective: This quality improvement project evaluated whether video-based education improved stroke survivors’ knowledge of PSD, coping strategies, and available healthcare resources before hospital discharge. Methods: A pre-experimental one-group pretest/posttest design was implemented on the inpatient stroke units of the region’s largest Comprehensive Stroke Center (CSC), where the highest level of complex stroke care is given. Adult stroke survivors preparing for discharge …

Left Ventricular Noncompactation: A Case Of Preserved Function In An Asymptomatic Adult, Daya Woodyard
Left Ventricular Noncompactation: A Case Of Preserved Function In An Asymptomatic Adult, Daya Woodyard
Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Ultrasound Projects
This case study presents a 40-year-old female in for an annual echocardiogram. Diagnostic evaluation included a transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE), cardiac CT, MRI, and genetic testing. Echocardiographic findings demonstrated prominent trabeculation consistent with left ventricular non-compaction (LVNC). Cardiac function was otherwise normal with an ejection fraction of 55% and no hemodynamically significant valvular heart disease. Cardiac CT further supported the diagnosis by revealing prominent right-sided trabeculi. Despite these structural abnormalities, the patient remained fairly asymptomatic with management consisting of routine TTE every 6-12 months and a 14-day Holter patch to monitor for arrhythmias. This case demonstrates the importance of multimodality imaging …
Investigation Of Thrombophilia As A Causative Factor In Acute Limb Ischemia: A Case Report On Antiphospholipid Syndrome And Protein C & S Deficiency, Leah Dorsey
Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Ultrasound Projects
Acute limb ischemia (ALI) represents an abrupt decrease in arterial perfusion that endangers life and limb viability. This pathology is rarely seen in younger populations with no significant comorbidities such as peripheral arterial disease or diabetes. One uncommon cause of ALI includes hypercoagulable states from acquired or inherited thrombophilias such as antiphospholipid syndrome and Protein C & S deficiency. This report examines a case of Rutherford 2A acute limb ischemia in a 45-year-old male patient who presented with paresthesia and worsening pain in his right lower extremity. Due to the emergent nature of ALI, swift diagnosis and prompt revascularization to …
The Myth Of Capitalism, Marcus Mosquera
The Myth Of Capitalism, Marcus Mosquera
Master of Liberal Studies Theses
Capitalism is a contentious topic in contemporary political discourse. Understandings of capitalism vary dramatically, particularly in a polarized political climate. This thesis aims to shed light on the history of capitalism, detailing how it arose, what its fundamental features are, and on what grounds it is defended and criticized in the United States following World War II. Far from being objective, many understandings of capitalism are infused with emotional and dramatic framing devices that elevate these worldviews to the level of myth. This analysis will assess the ways that views on capitalism deploy the concept of myth and storytelling to …
Civic Grammar: Why Classical Architecture Endures In The American State, Jesse Walker
Civic Grammar: Why Classical Architecture Endures In The American State, Jesse Walker
Master of Liberal Studies Theses
The dominant visual language of American federal buildings has been classical, surviving repeated ideological challenges, professional revolts, and political controversy. While this persistence has been widely observed, the mechanism behind it has not been clearly identified. This thesis isolates that mechanism. Drawing on architectural history, federal procurement policy, and primary sources from Jefferson's correspondence through the executive orders of 2020 and 2025, it argues that classicism endures not because its meaning has remained stable, but because federal architecture is governed by a persistent functional constraint: government buildings must be immediately legible to an ordinary citizen, without signage or prior knowledge, …
The Importance Of After-School Programs For Middle And High School Students, Chelsey Wright
The Importance Of After-School Programs For Middle And High School Students, Chelsey Wright
Integrated Studies
After-school programs for middle and high school students have become an important part of today’s education system. They started as safe places for students after-school, but now they also help students succeed academically, develop social and emotional skills, involve families, and offer more learning opportunities. Programs like the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) are among the largest federally funded after-school efforts in the U.S., focusing on underserved and high-poverty areas. This paper reviews national studies, peer-reviewed research, meta-analyses, dissertations, conference presentations, and insights from practitioners, including an interview with Hillary Bumpus, a program coordinator with ten years of …
