Blood Product Transfusion And Coagulopathy In Children With Traumatic Brain Injury: A Narrative Review., Robert Marcel T. Huibonhoa, Niranjan Vijayakumar, Daniel Kelly, Oliver Karam, Madhuradhar Chegondi

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of critical illness and mortality in children. Transfusion of blood products, a common intervention in the management of pediatric TBI, has important implications for related principles, including trauma-induced coagulopathy, cerebral perfusion, and cerebral oxygen delivery. Knowledge gaps persist due to the limited availability of pediatric-specific data regarding blood product transfusion in TBI. In particular, there is a lack of prospective studies defining appropriate specific laboratory thresholds and transfusion targets, as well as insufficient evidence to guide the weighing of potential benefits against transfusion-related risks in this population. Although blood product transfusion in …

Although the disease is often self-limited, it may significantly impair quality of life. This review summarizes treatment options and emerging therapies for Grover’s disease reported in the literature since 2019. A comprehensive search of PubMed and MEDLINE identified 1,068 records, of which thirteen publications met inclusion criteria, including one systematic review, one narrative review, one nonrandomized controlled study, nine case reports, and one fact sheet, representing a total of 337 patients. The literature demonstrates …

Growing Wise: Proverbs 2:1–11 As A Formative Paradigm For Jesuit Formation, Carlos Cesar Barbosa Silva Jan 2026

Growing Wise: Proverbs 2:1–11 As A Formative Paradigm For Jesuit Formation, Carlos Cesar Barbosa Silva

Loyola Papers

This article offers a theological reading of Proverbs 2:1-11 as a sapiential text on the formation of the human person in the religious life and explores its implications for Jesuit formation. Through attention to the literary and theological movement of the passage, the article identifies four formative movements: the active search for Wisdom, its reception as a divine gift, its ethical expression, and its interior integration. These movements provide a biblical lens for examining three risks in Jesuit formation: overprotection, careerism, and sterile intellectualism. The article argues that in Proverbs 2:1-11, Wisdom is a gift that transforms the heart and …

Martyrdom And The Call To Daily Witness In The Teaching Of Pope John Paul Ii, Nguyen Van Tam Jan 2026

Martyrdom And The Call To Daily Witness In The Teaching Of Pope John Paul Ii, Nguyen Van Tam

Loyola Papers

This article explores Pope John Paul II’s understanding of martyrdom and its meaning for Christian life and witness today. Drawing especially on the encyclical Veritatis Splendor and the post-synodal apostolic exhortation Vita Consecrata, it presents martyrdom as the fullest expression of fidelity to Christ, rooted in his Paschal Mystery and sustained by grace, truth, love, and hope. The article examines the Christological, anthropological, ecclesiological, and eschatological dimensions of martyrdom. It also highlights John Paul II’s understanding of “daily martyrdom,” through which Christians are called to give themselves faithfully to Christ in ordinary life. In this sense, martyrdom remains a living …

Hope Amidst Desolation: A Socio-Historical And Theological Reflection On Myanmar Catholicism, Set Paing Tun

Loyola Papers

This research paper examines the profound spiritual resilience of Catholics in Myanmar amid ongoing socio-political turmoil, including the coup d’état, civil war, and rising inflation. Utilizing socio-historical and literary analyses, this paper investigates how Psalm 23 functions as a vital source of hope and consolation, fostering resilience among Myanmar Catholics experiencing uncertainty and desolation. The analysis highlights Psalm 23:4, which states, “even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil for you are with me,” and explores the metaphor of God as a shepherd who provides and protects, resonating with the lived experiences of believers facing suffering …

Medieval Canon Law On Catechesis And Christian Formation, Enrico C. Eusebio Jr. Jan 2026

Medieval Canon Law On Catechesis And Christian Formation, Enrico C. Eusebio Jr.

Loyola Papers

By reconstructing medieval catechetical legislation, this paper presents a distinct field of research within the Church’s canonical system, one long overlooked in canonical historical study, which has long focused on matrimonial, liturgical, or disciplinary norms. Drawing primarily from conciliar and synodal canons and episcopal directives, this study demonstrates that long before the Council of Trent, the Church was already systematically legislating on the teaching of Christian doctrine and Christian formation. As Church practice shifted from adult to infant baptism, catechetical formation moved from the holistic pre-baptismal catechumenate to doctrinal and moral instruction through the catechetical sermons of bishops, parish priests, …

Background: Radiotherapy is an integral component of treatment for oropharyngeal cancer. Toxicity from the current state-of-the-art photon radiotherapy, intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), has prompted the search for alternative, less toxic therapies. One such alternative that might de-intensify treatment is proton therapy. In this trial, we aimed to directly compare IMRT with intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT), both concurrent with systemic therapy, hypothesising comparable disease control and survival and lower toxicity.

Methods: This randomised, multicentre, open-label, non-inferiority, phase 3 trial was conducted in 21 sites (cancer centres or universities) in the USA. Patients (aged ≥18 years) with stage III or stage IV …

Gene-environment interactions may enhance our understanding of blood pressure (BP) biology. We conducted a meta-analysis of multi-population genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of BP traits accounting for gene-depressive symptomatology (DEPR) interactions. Our study included 564,680 adults from 67 cohorts and four population backgrounds: African (5%), Asian (7%), European (85%), and Hispanic (3%). We discovered seven previously unreported BP loci showing gene-DEPR interaction. These loci mapped to genes implicated in neurogenesis (TGFA and CASP3), lipid metabolism (ACSL1), neuronal apoptosis (CASP3), and synaptic activity (CNTN6 and DBI). We also showed evidence for gene-DEPR interaction at nine known BP loci, further suggesting links between …

The Distribution Of Cadmium And Its Isotopes In The Subarctic Pacific, J. M. Malloy, H. R. Hunt, M. Sieber, S. Takano, H. Obata, T. M. Conway

Making Waves REU

  • Cadmium (Cd) is a bioactive trace element that can act as a micronutrient, driving large scale chemical processes like photosynthesis and cellular respiration [1,2].
  • The uptake of major nutrients is limited by dissolved iron (Fe) availability in high nutrient low chlorophyll (HNLC) surface regions like the subarctic Pacific [2,4].
  • Upwelling of Cd-rich deepwater is a Cd source, in addition to riverine, atmospheric, and anthropogenic inputs [1].
  • Dissolved cadmium isotopic compositions (δ114Cd) provide insight into the biogeochemical processes controlling Cd distributions throughout the water column, including biological uptake in surface waters, regeneration, and water mass mixing at depth.
  • Here we present …

Association Of Neighborhood Economic Trajectories And Risk Of Mortality Among Older Adults, Erika Figueroa-Solis, Qian Xiao

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background

Lower neighborhood socioeconomic status (SES) and decline in neighborhood SES have been linked to detrimental health outcomes, such as cardiovascular disease (CVD), cancer, and mortality. However, few studies have investigated distinct types of neighborhood economic trajectories in relation to mortality. We examined the association between the recently developed multidimensional measure of neighborhood trajectories and mortality in older adults enrolled in the National Institutes of Health-AARP Diet and Health Study (NIH-AARP).

Methods

Neighborhoods were classified into five groups based on economic change patterns from 2000 to 2016 using American Community Survey data: Stability, Growth, Displacement, Abandonment, and Poverty Concentration. Mortality …

Due to the paucity of validated cell surface osteosarcoma-specific targets, patients with this condition have long been excluded from the benefits of antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) therapy observed in patients with several solid and hematologic malignancies. Our comprehensive surfaceome profiling approach previously identified osteosarcoma-specific cell-surface antigens that are highly expressed in osteosarcomas but minimally expressed in normal tissues. As a result, one such antigen, CADM1, was selected for the generation of an ADC. We tested a CADM1-targeting ADC with a tesirine payload (SG3249) in vitro in osteosarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, and neuroblastoma patient-derived xenograft cell lines. In vivo, we tested six CADM1-expressing osteosarcoma …

Scattered between many healthcare providers across the US, Electronic Health Records (EHR) are extensively used for research purposes. Collaboration and sharing of EHRs between multiple institutions often provide access to more diverse datasets and a chance to conduct comprehensive studies. However, these collaboration efforts are usually hindered by privacy issues that render the pooling of such data at a centralized database impossible. Furthermore, EHRs are often incomplete and require statistical imputation prior to the study. To enable collaborative studies on top of incomplete, private EHRs, here we provide a provably secure solution built with secure multiparty computation (SMC) that provides …

Grief, Memory, And Hope: Significance Of Ancestral Land In Psalm 137, “By The Rivers Of Babylon,” In Healing Intergenerational Migration Trauma, Shimbo Pastory William

Loyola Papers

Psalm 137 presents a paradigmatic expression of exile and lament, and the power of shared hope to return to the ancestral land. Memories trigger strong feelings and a firm resolve not to “forget” the ancestral home. This paper argues from a constructive perspective that in Psalm 137, the memory of ancestral land is not merely nostalgic or a source of grief, but it functions as a theological act that preserves communal identity and sustains hope for restoration and healing. Even today, we feel strongly about land, especially ancestral lands, because they are closely connected to our identity, cherished memories, grief, …

Invariant natural killer T cells (NKTs) have intrinsic anti-tumor properties that make them promising candidates for chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) immunotherapies. Transgenic cytokine expression can enhance cellular therapy potency, and we hypothesized that co-expressing IL-18 alone or with IL-15 would boost CAR-NKT therapeutic potential. To test this, we generated retroviral constructs expressing IL-15 and/or IL-18 with an inducible caspase 9 safety switch and co-transduced them with a GD2-specific CAR into human NKTs. Co-expression of IL-18 or IL-15/IL-18 increased CAR-NKT cytotoxicity, proliferation, and cytokine secretion in vitro compared to IL-15 alone. IL-18 also enhanced GPC3.CAR and CD19.CAR NKT activity against hepatocellular …

Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) has identified intermediate epithelial states in pulmonary fibrosis, including KRT5-/KRT17+ aberrant basaloid cells in humans and Krt8+ alveolar differentiation intermediates (ADIs) in mice. Their functional contributions to fibrogenesis, however, remain unclear. Here, we introduce an RNA-sensing-dependent protein translation technology that enables selective targeting of Krt8+ ADI cells in vitro and in vivo. Transcriptomic analysis revealed Small Proline-Rich Protein 1 A (SPRR1A) mRNA as a shared marker of murine Krt8+ ADIs and human KRT5-/KRT17+ basaloid cells, distinguishing them from other lung cell populations. Using programmable RNA sensors, we demonstrated selective EGFP-labeling of Krt8+ ADI cells in vivo, …

To Extract Or Not To Extract: On What Basis Do We Make That Decision? (Part I), Ib Leth Nielsen

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

The decision to remove permanent teeth is often challenging for the orthodontist, and multiple factors should be considered. The primary reason for extracting teeth is crowding, followed by aesthetic concerns, particularly the risk of creating a flat facial profile from over-retracting the front teeth. Often, the facial growth patterns are overlooked in this decision-making process. This review will explore how facial morphology, growth patterns, and maturation stages influence the extraction decision. We shall address common concerns related to extractions, such as the impact on esthetics, airways, the effect of extractions on buccal corridors, their relationship to TMJ issues, and the …

Aim: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a common microvascular complication of diabetes and a leading cause of preventable vision loss. Understanding patients’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) toward DR screening and management is critical for designing effective interventions. This study aimed to assess the KAP of individuals with diabetes regarding DR in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Methods: A web-based cross-sectional survey was conducted among 535 Saudi adults with diabetes between January and April 2021. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize participant characteristics and KAP levels. Multivariate logistic regression (MLR) was performed to identify sociodemographic and clinical predictors of high KAP, with adjusted …

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The prognostic value of baseline Quantitative Flow Ratio (QFR) in real-world patients remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of baseline QFR and its three-tier model-low, grey-zone, and high QFR-in patients with single-vessel intermediate stenosis.

METHODS: This retrospective study included 478 patients with QFR between 0.70 and 0.90 who underwent coronary angiography between May and June 2023. Patients were stratified into Low (0.70-0.74), Grey-Zone (0.75-0.85), and High (0.86-0.90) QFR groups. The primary endpoint was major adverse cardiac events (MACE); the key secondary endpoint was target vessel failure (TVF). Kaplan-Meier and Cox proportional hazards models …
