The Potential Role Of Soil Depth And Land Management History In Rangeland Soil Seed Bank Community Dynamics., Owen K. Palsic, Akasha Faist, Madeline Mayorga
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Rangelands provide critical ecosystem services for societies across the globe, yet land use changes, climate change, and invasive species are causing large-scale rangeland degradation. To maintain effective rangeland ecosystem function, it is critical we understand the comprehensive ecological dynamics of these systems. One crucial ecological variable that is often overlooked is the soil seed bank, which is otherwise defined as the community of germinable seeds stored in the soil of a given system. Many ecological studies and models leave out soil seed bank communities, despite their undeniable importance in rangeland ecosystems, and instead only consider the aboveground vegetation community. In …

Association Between Pm₂.₅ Air Pollution Exposure And County Level Psoriasis Prevalence: A Nationwide Ecological Study, Shihab Chowdhury, Thomas Last
Research Day
Introduction
Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition affecting approximately 3% of U.S. adults. While environmental exposures such as fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅) have been implicated in systemic inflammation, their association with psoriasis at the population level remains unclear. This study modeled county level psoriasis prevalence across the United States and evaluated its ecological association with long term PM₂.₅ exposure from 2011 to 2014.
Methods
We used NHANES 2011-2014 data to fit a survey-weighted logistic regression model predicting psoriasis diagnosis based on sex, age group, race/ethnicity, education, and poverty level. These demographic coefficients were applied to U.S. Census-derived county populations …
Food Insecurity As A Primary Driver Of Cardiometabolic Disease Across Georgia Census Tracts, Jordan R. Howard, Thomas Last, Winston Price
Food Insecurity As A Primary Driver Of Cardiometabolic Disease Across Georgia Census Tracts, Jordan R. Howard, Thomas Last, Winston Price
Research Day
Introduction: Cardiometabolic diseases including diabetes, hypertension, and obesity remain leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the United States and disproportionately affect communities across the southeastern region. In Georgia, disease burden is concentrated in rural counties and economically disadvantaged urban areas. Public health frameworks have traditionally attributed these disparities to limited physical access to healthy food, commonly described as “food deserts,” where distance to grocery stores is presumed to constrain dietary quality and worsen metabolic health. However, growing evidence suggests that economic food insecurity may play a larger role in cardiometabolic risk than geographic food access. Few studies have evaluated …

Exploring Stress Contagion: The Effect Of Faculty Stress Levels On Occupational Therapy Graduate Students, Dana Kolbfleisch
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Research has indicated a relationship between faculty and students as it pertains to stress levels and subsequent well-being in occupational therapy (OT) programs (Grab et al., 2021), a potential indication of a stress contagion effect. This research aimed to determine if faculty stress levels affect student stress levels in OT graduate programs. The researcher used an ecological correlational study design with a nonprobability convenience sampling procedure. Faculty and students (n = 19 and n = 165, respectively) from 367 accredited OT graduate programs across the United States completed a survey consisting of demographic questions and the PSS-10. In addition, OT …

This study provides a systematic review of hydrodynamic roughness in coral reef systems, focusing on drag coefficient (Cd), Manning's roughness coefficient (n), friction factor, and rugosity metrics. A structured bibliometric analysis was conducted using Scopus and Web of Science databases, including field measurements, laboratory flume experiments, and numerical studies validated with physical data. Results show substantial variability in roughness parameters across scales and environments. Reported drag coefficients range from 0.002 for smooth sandy beds to values exceeding 7.0 in complex mangrove-reef systems, with typical reef crest values between 0.05 and 0.30. Manning's n varies from 0.01 in smooth channels to …

Distribution And Diversity Of Aquatic Snails (Basommatophora) In Tributary Systems Of The South Central Plains Ecoregion In Arkansas, Madison Ward, Zach R. Crain
ATU Scholars Symposium
Freshwater aquatic snails (Basommatophora) are seldom surveyed, yet they play an important part in the aquatic community. Arkansas, is one state where there have been very few snail-specific surveys, especially in the South Central Plains Ecoregion. This project investigates the distribution and diversity of freshwater aquatic snails in three previously unsampled creeks in Arkansas (Champagnolle Creek, L’Aigle Creek, Moro Creek, Chemin-A-Haut Bayou, and Derrieusseaux Creek). Sampling was conducted across various sites within each watershed, qualitative methods were used to assess snail diversity and distribution patterns. A total of 659 individuals from 8 species were observed across all five watersheds. The …
Identifying And Prioritizing Habitat For Ring-Necked Pheasants (Phasianus Colchicus) Conservation In Nebraska, Allison Joy Barg
Identifying And Prioritizing Habitat For Ring-Necked Pheasants (Phasianus Colchicus) Conservation In Nebraska, Allison Joy Barg
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
As competing demands grow on agricultural landscapes, optimizing land use for economic and environmental benefit is crucial. A key way to improve conservation outcomes on working lands is to strategically target conservation efforts to land that is likely to provide the maximum benefit; however, this approach requires sufficient data to predict the outcomes of varying management decisions. Ring-necked pheasants are a recreationally and economically valuable species that were historically abundant in the agricultural regions of North America. The intensification and simplification of farm systems over the last half century have caused pheasant populations to decline, and while conservation programs such …

Hidden Diversity In A Clonal Endemic: Insights Into Clematis Socialis From A Population Genetics Perspective, Joanna M. Lapoint
Hidden Diversity In A Clonal Endemic: Insights Into Clematis Socialis From A Population Genetics Perspective, Joanna M. Lapoint
Theses
Clematis socialis (Kral) is a rare, federally endangered perennial species restricted to a small number of fragmented populations in Alabama and Georgia. The species exhibits extensive clonality and limited sexual recruitment, characteristics that complicate expectations regarding genetic diversity and population connectivity. Despite its conservation significance, genome-wide assessments of population structure have been lacking. We used genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) to generate a genome-wide SNP dataset for 170 individuals sampled from six natural populations. Population structure and genetic differentiation were evaluated using Bayesian clustering, analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA), pairwise FST estimates, and network-based visualization. Analyses revealed strong genetic structuring among populations and …

Engineering and Technology Journal
Land Surface Temperature (LST) is a critical parameter for water resources and hydrology investigation. Weather ground stations provide a continuous dataset on the LST. However, some stations rely on discrete events data, which shows limited capabilities to monitor diurnal and annual changes in LST. Remote Sensing technology provided much valid information by using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) to cover LST variations in Iraq. This study aims to analyze LST variation based on MOD11C3 Data with weather ground measurements stations for the different topography periods between 2000-2020. Different statistical parameters were used to validate LST results, including RSME; NSE; R2, …

Hermeneutic Reconstruction Of The Role Of Community In The Learning Ecology, Qoriah Rahmawati, Aceng Hasani, Erwin Salpariansi
Jurnal Pendidikan Humaniora
Community is often treated as an external support for schools, which makes its role in learning ecology conceptually peripheral and weakly integrated into explanations of learning across contexts. This study aims to reconstruct the role of community within the learning ecology so that it is positioned as a constitutive dimension of learning alongside school and family. The study used a systematic literature review of 62 publications, followed by narrative meta-analysis and philosophical-hermeneutic interpretation within the Triad Human Learning Ecology framework. The results show a school-centered tendency in the literature, while community is more frequently framed as contextual support than as …

Heat waves are increasing in frequency, intensity, magnitude, and duration, causing a disproportionate impact on marginalized communities exposed to urban heat islands. Newly emerging spaceborne thermal sensing instruments, such as ECOSTRESS and Hydrosat, now have the capabilities to measure urban surface temperatures accurately at the block level (< 100 m) and with enough frequency to capture transient heat waves (daily to subweekly). Such data are critical for monitoring and informing policy and mitigation efforts, such as resurfacing, green space, cooling stations, and medical mobilization. These serve to advance environmental justice and reduce health risks—and deaths—among the most vulnerable: minority, low-income, elderly, those with physical- and mental-health preconditions, unhoused, children, and outdoor workers. While scientists have increasingly used satellite data to quantify urban heat islands and risks to communities, there remains a significant gap in action resulting from such analyses—a figurative and literal “valley of death.” Reviewing over 500 scientific publications, we identify a critical lack of engagement with the communities being analyzed (10.9%; n = 58); yet, community engagement is key to bridging such analysis with subsequent action. Here, we demonstrate how participatory community engagement directly with data and analysis leads to increased policy changes and mitigation efforts. Our framework has immediate implications for how scientists may augment their work and thought processes to achieve …
Aquatic Interrelations In Malika Mokeddem’S Novel N’Zid (2001), Laura C. Klein
Aquatic Interrelations In Malika Mokeddem’S Novel N’Zid (2001), Laura C. Klein
Green Humanities: A Journal of Ecological Thought in Literature, Philosophy & the Arts
This article offers an ecological analysis of Malika Mokeddem's novel N'Zid (2001), moving beyond postcolonial and anthropocentric interpretations. It centers on the protagonist Nora's individuation, arguing this process is intrinsically linked to her evolving relationship with the aquatic environment from which she emerges. The article aims to situate N'Zid within an ecological perspective, particularly relevant in the Anthropocene, an era compelling a reassessment of humanity's place. Echoing Bruno Latour, addressing inter-relationality is essential as the stable physical framework of the Moderns becomes unstable. This view necessitates rethinking environmental issues and encourages a scientific interpretation of the novel, drawing on neurosciences, …
