Aquaponics, a bio-integrated system that combines fish farming and vegetable cultivation, has gained significant attention due to its rapid expansion and potential for sustainable food production. In aquaponics, along with plants and fish, both beneficial and harmful microorganisms are also present. This study was conducted to assess the microbiota diversity of Nile tilapia reared with lettuce in aquaponic systems, with a focus on food safety implications. A total of 144 Nile tilapia juveniles with an average initial weight of 30.7 ± 0.03 g were randomly stocked and allocated to three treatments, each with three replicates. In treatment one, the fish …

Place Matters: Investigating The Social And Environmental Drivers Of Hypertension In Nashville, Marquinta Harvey, Michael D. Oliver, Tatum Brown, Deya Rassul, Thomas Strickler, Jarod Parrish, Catherine Bass
Funded Scholarship
Hypertension disparities persist across communities, driven by interactions between social determinants of health (SDOH) and behavioral factors. This study examines geographic and demographic patterns of hypertension in Nashville, Tennessee, to assess how socioeconomic, environmental, and behavioral factors contribute to inequities in prevalence, treatment, and control. Granular ZIP code-level analyses highlight community-specific drivers and the need for policy reforms to advance health equity.
Are There Enough Bees? Assessing Pollen Limitation In Native Eastern Washington Prairie Forbs, Alejandro Torres
Are There Enough Bees? Assessing Pollen Limitation In Native Eastern Washington Prairie Forbs, Alejandro Torres
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
Prairie ecosystems in eastern Washington have been severely degraded due to agricultural intensification, urbanization, and habitat fragmentation, leaving less than 0.1% of native prairie intact. As a result, these ecosystems have become some of the most endangered in the United States. One group of essential pollinators is the bees, which facilitate plant reproduction and contribute to the long-term persistence of restored plant communities. However, despite the presence of at least 257 native bee species in the region, the impacts of habitat fragmentation and restoration on pollinator activity and plant-pollinator networks remain poorly understood. For this study, we worked across Eastern …
Genomic Variation, Adaptive Evolution, And Invasive And Evolutionary History Of Microstegium Vimineum, Cameron William Corbett
Genomic Variation, Adaptive Evolution, And Invasive And Evolutionary History Of Microstegium Vimineum, Cameron William Corbett
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Invasive species can cause environmental and economic damage, but can offer unique opportunities to study rapid evolution and adaptation in novel environments. Microstegium vimineum (stiltgrass) is a prolific invasive grass in the eastern United States. Historical herbaria collections were used to identify patterns of invasion history and population dynamics over a spatial and temporal scale. Analyses of plastid genomes reveal a complex invasion history, including a single introduction in the southern United States linked to Japan and multiple repeated introductions in the northern United States from various source populations. Spread of introduced populations provide evidence of admixture among previously geographically …
Understanding The Syphilis Resurgence Among Females Of Childbearing Age: Informing Prevention Efforts In New York State, Salvatore Currenti
Understanding The Syphilis Resurgence Among Females Of Childbearing Age: Informing Prevention Efforts In New York State, Salvatore Currenti
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Syphilis is caused by Treponema pallidum and transmitted through direct contact with infected mucosal lesions and via vertical transmission during pregnancy (i.e., congenital). Transmission of syphilis to an infant during pregnancy (i.e., congenital syphilis [CS]) can lead to early fetal death, stillbirth, neonatal death, preterm birth, low birthweight, and congenital infection in infants. The United States (U.S.) is experiencing epidemic increases in both females of reproductive age with syphilis and infants with CS. In New York State (NYS), these trends have also occurred, especially after COVID-19 emergence, and increases in reported cases and incidence rates are comparable to national statistics. …

Background: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain a major global health concern, with over one million new curable cases reported daily and limited long-term treatment options. Additionally, there are limited treatment options for women with bacterial vaginosis (BV), a dysbiotic condition predisposing them to STIs. Computationally designed human-milk-inspired antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are promising candidates for novel antiviral and antibacterial therapies. This study evaluated the cervicovaginal mucosal safety and antiviral activity of three human-milk-inspired AMPs (MAT-006, UCD-MAT-001, and UCD-MAT-002) previously shown to exhibit antimicrobial activity against BV-causing pathogens. Methods: AMP cytotoxicity and inflammatory responses were assessed in relevant genital tract cell lines …

A Tale Of Two Microbialities: Stromatolites And Microbially Induced Sedimentary Structures, Nora Noffke, Stanley M. Awramik
OES Faculty Publications
Microbialites are biosedimentary structures built by microbial mats. Five microbialite groups are distinguished: stromatolites, thrombolites, dendrolites, leiloites and microbially induced sedimentary structures (MISS). This contribution discusses the two most abundant microbialite groups in marine settings, stromatolites and MISS. Microbial interactions with clastic sediment are very similar in both stromatolite and MISS formation. However, in stromatolites, syngenetic carbonate production caused by photoautotrophic and heterotrophic metabolisms and by calcimicrobes also takes place. More so, carbonate may precipitate within the extracellular polymeric substances. Due to the various carbonate forming processes as well as recrystallisation, the microscopic mat fabrics within stromatolite laminae are rarely …
Vibrio In Oysters: Exploring The Impact Of Harvesting Practices, Samin Yasar
Vibrio In Oysters: Exploring The Impact Of Harvesting Practices, Samin Yasar
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The rapid growth of oyster aquaculture in the Southeastern United States necessitates the validation of post-harvest processing strategies to mitigate the risk of Vibrio spp. infection. This study investigated the efficiency of three cooling methods - Direct Ice Burial, Indirect Ice Cooling, and Ambient Control, on the prevalence and abundance of V. cholerae, V. parahaemolyticus, and V. vulnificus in cultured oysters (Crassostrea virginica) harvested in Georgia. Additionally, the study examined the safety of two different re-submersion periods for oyster safety.
Internal temperature profiles confirmed that while Direct Ice Burial achieved the most rapid cooling (< 10° C in 7.3 ± 1.2 min), the Indirect Ice Cooling protocol successfully reached the safety threshold in 73.7 ± 17.2 min, well within the 2-hour regulatory window. Microbiological analysis (N = 270) revealed that V. …

Moth Assemblages Of Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, Kimberly Anne Steese
Masters Theses
"Moths (Lepidoptera) are ecologically important insects that function as herbivores, pollinators, prey resources, and indicators of ecosystem integrity. Despite their ecological significance, moth communities in the Missouri Ozarks remain poorly documented, particularly within military-managed landscapes. This thesis examined patterns of moth diversity, assemblage structure, and environmental drivers at Fort Leonard Wood (FLW), Missouri, while also assessing the distribution and genetic diversity of species within the genus Papaipema.
Field surveys were conducted from 2019 through 2021 across prairie, savanna, forest, and restoration habitats at FLW using UV bucket traps, sheet trapping, and targeted larval surveys. Across all sampling efforts, 29,116 individual …
Enhancing Bay Scallop Monitoring Using Machine Learning And Semantic Segmentation With Benthic Visual Imagery, Waheed Odubayo
Enhancing Bay Scallop Monitoring Using Machine Learning And Semantic Segmentation With Benthic Visual Imagery, Waheed Odubayo
Open Access Master's Theses
Effective monitoring of benthic ecosystems requires scalable approaches capable of simultaneously identifying key species and quantifying habitat composition. In Narragansett Bay Rhode Island, bay scallops, Argopecten irradians, serve as important ecological indicators, yet traditional survey methods remain labor-intensive and spatially limited. This study presents an automated deep learning framework for scallop detection and habitat segmentation using underwater benthic imagery.
The proposed system combines three components: (1) YOLO based object detection for identifying live scallops, (2) U-Net semantic segmentation for quantifying benthic habitat classes (eelgrass and sand/silt), and (3) a geospatial contrastive learning framework (GeoCLR) to leverage spatial continuity in …

Can’T Sue A Movement: Greenpeace’S $667 Million Crisis Narrative, Trevor Hart
Can’T Sue A Movement: Greenpeace’S $667 Million Crisis Narrative, Trevor Hart
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
In March of 2025, the environmental group Greenpeace was found liable for nearly $667 million to Energy Transfer, the oil company behind the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). The lawsuit was widely regarded as a SLAPP, or Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation, because it weaponized civic torts to infringe upon Greenpeace’s First Amendment rights. The $667 million verdict is an unprecedented figure in SLAPP litigation–it’s enough to bankrupt Greenpeace in the United States and “chill” democratic participation. This thesis used a hybrid blame-renewal crisis narrative framework to analyze Greenpeace’s public response to lawsuits against a backdrop of cultural and political economic …

Regular physical activity (PA) has been shown to benefit sleep. However, the effects of PA timing and adherence to the WHO's recommended 60-min moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) guideline on sleep are unclear, especially for children with ADHD who often experience sleep problems. This study examined whether timing of MVPA influenced objectively measured sleep, including sleep latency (SL), sleep efficiency (SE), total sleep time (TST), and wake after sleep onset (WASO), among children with ADHD. This cross-sectional study involved 253 children with ADHD (Mage = 8.60 ± 1.31 years, 81% boys). MVPA timing was categorized as more than 8 h before …

Evidence Of Personality And Movement Syndromes In A Mobile Predator: How Individual Hunting Strategy Shapes Ecosystem Service Potential By Barn Owls (Tyto Furcata) In An Agroecosystem, Lauren M. Jackson
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Animal-mediated ecosystem services are delivered through the behavior of individuals, yet most studies evaluate service-providing species at the population level. We tested whether individual variation in plumage, behavior, and movement predicted hunting behavior and vineyard habitat use by adult male American barn owls (Tyto furcata) nesting in winegrape vineyards in Lodi, California, USA. We fitted GPS-accelerometer tags to 42 breeding males, quantified breast-plumage traits, measured neophobia using repeated novel object tests, and derived nightly movement metrics from GPS tracks and hidden Markov model-classified hunting locations. Several behavioral traits were repeatable, but movement traits showed the clearest repeatable individual …
