Oppression On The Blockchain, Erwin J. Kwok, Moin A. Yahya Jan 2026

Oppression On The Blockchain, Erwin J. Kwok, Moin A. Yahya

Emory Business Law Review

When Ethereum (ETH) shifted from a Proof of Work (PoW) protocol to a Proof of Stake (PoS) protocol, not all users were enthused. We use Ethereum’s shift from PoW to PoS as a case study for the broader question of whether developers of a blockchain owe its members certain fiduciary or fiduciary-like duties. We argue that if done properly, in accordance to the rules governing the blockchain, then developers do not necessarily owe fiduciary responsibility to other members of the chain, but they nonetheless may owe fiduciary-like responsibilities to users inadvertently and negatively impacted. We argue these users may be …

A Portable Potentiostat Integrated With A Pt/Zno/Lig Electrode For Non-Enzymatic Glucose Detection, Reagan Aviha, Gymama Slaughter Jan 2026

A Portable Potentiostat Integrated With A Pt/Zno/Lig Electrode For Non-Enzymatic Glucose Detection, Reagan Aviha, Gymama Slaughter

Center for Bioelectronics Publications

Continuous glucose monitoring is critical for effective diabetes management; however, conventional benchtop potentiostats are bulky, costly, and unsuitable for decentralized point-of-care (PoC) applications. To address these limitations, this work presents a miniaturized, low-cost electrochemical sensing platform integrating a non-enzymatic glucose sensor with a portable potentiostat. The sensing electrode is based on laser-induced graphene modified with zinc oxide and platinum nanostructures via electrodeposition to enable sensitive glucose detection under physiological conditions. A custom-designed portable potentiostat was developed to control electrode potentials and perform electrochemical measurements, and its performance was experimentally validated against a commercial Metrohm system. Glucose detection was evaluated using …

Ai-Assisted Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy For Cardiovascular Diagnostics: From Plasmonic Materials To Clinical Translation, Anju Joshi, Gymama Slaughter

Center for Bioelectronics Publications

Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has emerged as a powerful analytical technique, offering molecular fingerprint specificity and ultrasensitive detection of cardiac biomarkers. Recent advances in plasmonic nanostructures, surface functionalization strategies, and flexible sensing platforms have significantly improved the analytical performance of SERS-based biosensors. In parallel, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning has enabled robust interpretation of complex spectral datasets, facilitating automated biomarker classification and improved diagnostic accuracy in heterogeneous biological environments. Despite these advances, the field remains fragmented, with limited integration between nanomaterial design, biomarker selection, and data-driven analysis, and persistent challenges related to reproducibility, standardization, and clinical validation. …

Symmetry, Presumptions, And The Judges Design, Murat C. Mungan Jan 2026

Symmetry, Presumptions, And The Judges Design, Murat C. Mungan

Faculty Scholarship

An instrumental variables approach called ‘the judges design’ used frequently in social sciences relies on an assumption called ‘average monotonicity’. This assumption pertains to how different judges’ (or other classifiers’) decision making processes relate to each other. Violations of it are hard to detect, which raises the importance of it being supported by a plausible theory. Decisions of judges who solve Bayesian decision problems violate average monotonicity as long as the signals they process are symmetric and they do not possess strong presumptions. This result is extended to cases where judge presumptions are symmetrically distributed and may include strong presumptions. …

Information Law Pluralism, Hannah Bloch-Wehba Jan 2026

Information Law Pluralism, Hannah Bloch-Wehba

Faculty Scholarship

Information-intensive activities are reshaping political, social, and economic institutions. As they respond to these shifts, legislators and regulators are embracing information as a regulatory device for tech. Far from limiting themselves to public disclosure, consumer notice, and other traditional mechanisms of fostering transparency and information flows, however, legislators are using other, more nuanced tools to incentivize regulated entities to obtain, generate, and share information.

This Article maps the landscape of the emerging information-based regimes for regulating tech and assesses their conceptual and practical implications. It canvasses an extensive set of recently enacted laws regulating the information economy and shows that, …

Moral Progress In Legal Doctrine, Philip Petrov Jan 2026

Moral Progress In Legal Doctrine, Philip Petrov

Faculty Scholarship

This article integrates the concept of moral progress – here, moral improvement in the thinking and behavior of individuals over time – into the study of legal doctrine. The article first presents a naturalistic account of what moral progress is and describes three of its most historically and analytically important forms: (1) moral circle expansion, (2) moral domain expansion, and (3) increasing sensitivity to proportionality. The article then analyzes three historical developments in U.S. tort law that qualify as instances of moral progress: (1) the partial demise of the “suicide rule” beginning around the 1980s (according to …

Equal Justice & Generative Ai, Milan R. Markovic Jan 2026

Equal Justice & Generative Ai, Milan R. Markovic

Faculty Scholarship

The United States has long suffered from unequal access to justice, with countless low-and middle-income Americans forced to navigate the legal system alone. Recently, prominent judges, lawyers, and scholars have seized on generative AI as a potential corrective. These techno-optimists maintain that ChatGPT and other large language models can demystify the law and address unmet legal needs. Chief Justice John Roberts has proclaimed that AI-based tools "have the welcome potential to smooth out any mismatch between available resources and urgent needs in our court system."

Although AI will be an increasingly important source of legal assistance for underserved populations, the …

Does It Matter What People Lie About?, Stefanie Jung, Peter Krebs, Monika Leszczynska Jan 2026

Does It Matter What People Lie About?, Stefanie Jung, Peter Krebs, Monika Leszczynska

Faculty Scholarship

We investigate whether people’s moral judgments of lies in pre-contractual negotiations differ from their views on whether such lies should give the deceived party a legal right to rescind the contract, and whether these judgments depend on the content of the lie. In a vignette study with 832 German students and 885 participants from Germany, Italy, and the United States, respondents evaluated a range of common negotiation lies. Across samples, participants were generally more likely to deem a lie immoral than to believe it should justify rescission, but the size of this gap varied depending on the lie’s subject. Lies …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Introduction

Proliferative glomerulonephritis with monoclonal immunoglobulin deposits (PGNMID) is a form of monoclonal gammopathy of renal significance, characterized by kidney injury caused by monoclonal immunoglobulin deposition in the glomeruli. While detectable clones are only found in 20–30% of PGNMID, plasma cell- or B-cell-targeting therapies are suggested to be effective. Recent case reports suggested immune dysregulation, such as viral infections or vaccinations, could potentially trigger the onset or relapse of PGNMID. Here, we report a case of PGNMID without detectable clones, which relapsed after viral enteritis, presenting with severe acute kidney injury (AKI) and nephrotic syndrome.

Predicting the trajectory of clinical decline in aging individuals is a pressing challenge, especially for people with mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, or vascular dementia. Accurate predictions can guide treatment decisions, identify risk factors, and optimize clinical trials. In this study, we compared two deep learning approaches for forecasting changes, over a 2-year interval, in the Clinical Dementia Rating scale 'sum of boxes' score (sobCDR), as a continuous outcome (regression). This is a key metric in dementia research and clinical trials, and scores range from 0 (no impairment) to 18 (severe impairment). To predict decline, we trained a …

Genetic Variants Associated With Sjögren’S Disease Subtypes Stratified By Clinical Feature, Nitesh Enduru, Chihiro Iwaya, Akiko Suzuki, Zhongming Zhao, Junichi Iwata

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Introduction: Sjögren's disease (SjD) is a chronic autoimmune disorder characterized by dry mouth (xerostomia) and dry eyes (xerophthalmia) due to inflammation in exocrine glands, particularly the salivary and lacrimal glands. The condition presents a wide variety of clinical features, suggesting that it may involve heterogeneous conditions without a clear boundary. Although genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified several genetic variants associated with SjD, their roles in SjD pathogenesis remain unclear.

Methods: In this study, we aimed to identify single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with SjD by categorizing patients based on four diagnostic markers: anti-Ro/SSA and anti-La/SSB antibodies, IgG levels, and lymphocyte …

Enhancing Traffic State Estimation At Bottlenecks Through Improved Demand Modeling: A Greenshields-Grounded Approach, Yuyan Annie Pan, Xianbiao Hu, Qing Tang, Yanyan Chen, Xuesong (Simon) Zhou Jan 2026

Enhancing Traffic State Estimation At Bottlenecks Through Improved Demand Modeling: A Greenshields-Grounded Approach, Yuyan Annie Pan, Xianbiao Hu, Qing Tang, Yanyan Chen, Xuesong (Simon) Zhou

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Accurate estimation of traffic state under oversaturated conditions is fundamental to a wide range of transportation applications. While intuitive, volume-to-capacity (q/qc) ratio-based link performance functions (LPF) are challenged by the U-shaped pattern of real-world speed-flow plots, which contradict the monotonic assumptions of link performance models such as the Bureau of Public Roads (BPR) function, particularly when q/qc ≥ 1. This study addresses this critical gap by proposing an enhanced demand estimation method grounded in the Greenshields model, incorporating a real-time inflow correction factor to more accurately capture traffic demand at bottlenecks. In parallel, a modified LPF is introduced, replacing …

Early Drowsiness Detection Via Second-Order Derivative Analysis Of Heart Rate Variability: A Non-Contact Ecg Approach With Machine Learning, Fabrice Vaussenat, Abhiroop Bhattacharya, Julie Payette, Alireza Saidi, Victor Bellemin, Geordi-Gabriel Renaud-Dumoulin, Sylvain G. Cloutier, Ghislain Gagnon

Études primaires

Drowsy driving contributes to roughly 20% of traffic fatalities, yet most detection systems rely on behavioral cues that appear only after impairment has set in. Here we ask whether first and second derivatives of heart rate variability (HRV) can detect pre-crash states earlier than conventional approaches. Twenty-five participants completed 49 driving simulator sessions while we recorded cardiac activity through capacitive ECG electrodes embedded in the seat backrest—a non-contact method that avoids the privacy concerns of camera-based monitoring. To prevent circular evaluation, ground truth labels were based solely on crash proximity rather than HRV-derived scores. The combined HRV feature set (conventional …

Occupational Exposure To Pesticides Increases The Risk Of Amyotrophyc Lateral Sclerosis: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, France Labrèche, Pamela Prudhomme, Maryse Gagnon, Nicolas Dupré, Sabrina Gravel

Études primaires

Objective To systematically review the evidence on the association between occupational exposure to pesticides and the risk of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Methods A systematic search, conducted in eight bibliographic databases for publications between 1990 and 2025, identified observational studies estimating the risk of ALS after occupational pesticide exposure. Study quality was assessed using the WHO Risk of Bias (RoB) assessment instrument for systematic reviews, with the ROBINS-E (RoB in non-randomised studies of exposure) tool domains of bias. Pooled risk estimates were produced using random-effects models with restricted maximum likelihood, heterogeneity was assessed with I² statistics, and meta-regressions and publication …
