An Epistemological Reading Of Second Peter With An Application To Theological Discourse, Terry Robertson Oct 2026

An Epistemological Reading Of Second Peter With An Application To Theological Discourse, Terry Robertson

Andrews University Seminary Studies (AUSS)

community (2 Pet 1), contrasted with those of the false teachers (2 Pet 2), are applied to a truth versus error issue (2 Pet 3). The theme developed in 2 Peter of “growing in knowledge” may be viewed as relational, performative, and consequential. The Christian disciple is equipped to “be not deceived” and to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Pet 3:17–18 NIV)—both in the discernment and proclamation of truth. I propose that Peter’s message speaks to theological discourse, how members of the learning community who pursue biblical theology engage one another …

Piloting Translation Earbuds With Newcomer Multilinguals: An Exploratory Case Study With Teachers In Michigan Public Schools, Robyn Edwards, Joe Terantino

MITESOL Journal: An Online Publication of MITESOL

This exploratory case study examines how in-service teachers (n = 6) piloted translation earbuds to support WIDA Level 1-2 newcomer multilinguals in Michigan K–12 public schools. Grounded in Sociocultural Theory, the study highlights teachers’ perceptions of how the earbuds mediated classroom participation and access to instruction. Teachers identified the earbuds as most effective during content-heavy teacher talk, where real-time interpreting supported newcomers’ comprehension of grade-level content and reduced communication barriers. Teachers also reported that the earbuds increased student participation, encouraged socioemotional engagement, and helped strengthen teacher-student relationships by enabling more immediate and meaningful interaction. At the same time, teachers emphasized …

I Think, Therefore I Am I Am, Therefore I Think, Zrinka Tomašić Oct 2026

I Think, Therefore I Am I Am, Therefore I Think, Zrinka Tomašić

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This work is bringing forward questions about animal, plant, inanimate objects (including AI and molecules, atoms and subatomic particles) and even post-mortem consciousness. It gives examples and researches that are made and still being made. It connects the real examples with the philosophic thought past and present, Western and Chinese. It even mentions the research assignment about plant consciousness that is suitable for school children to do. And, although it has so many examples in biology, philosophy, physics and other fields, in the end it asks a question „Are they really conscious“ to every reader to reflect on. To come …

Geometric Puzzles On A Circular Track: A Recreational Introduction To Quantization, Sayandip Pandit, Amit Priyadarshi, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury Oct 2026

Geometric Puzzles On A Circular Track: A Recreational Introduction To Quantization, Sayandip Pandit, Amit Priyadarshi, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Imagine a circular running track with several water stations placed around it. If only a few stations may remain open, or if a few new stations may be built, where should they be located so that runners travel the shortest possible distance to reach one? This simple question leads to a collection of recreational geometry puzzles involving distance, symmetry, optimization, Voronoi regions, and quantization. Quantization is the mathematical problem of replacing a large collection of points by a smaller set of representative points while minimizing the approximation error. Using only elementary mathematics, we investigate several configurations of points on a …

The Gospel Of Gollum By Ivano Sassanelli, Gabriela Clarke Oct 2026

The Gospel Of Gollum By Ivano Sassanelli, Gabriela Clarke

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

This review evaluates Ivano Sassanelli’s exploration of what Gollum represents and whether he is a personification of the biblical claim that where one’s heart is, there also will their treasure be. As current scholarship focuses on secondary The Lord of the Rings characters, from Galadriel to Tom Bombadil, this book provides fascinating insights regarding perhaps the most anomalous figure in the canon.

Sassanelli brings together a unique body of international scholarship, especially works from his native Italy, and discusses several niche topics relating to Gollum, such as the character’s grandmother, film portrayal, and Italian-dubbed voice. Comparative reading between early editions …

"Making The Familiar Strange": The Ecocentric Power Of Climate Fantasy, John Cook Oct 2026

"Making The Familiar Strange": The Ecocentric Power Of Climate Fantasy, John Cook

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Contributing to the failure to address climate change is a lack of public imagination, both in perceiving the threat of climate change and conceptualizing solutions. Climate fiction engages readers on an emotional level and speculative fiction in particular can invent alternative worlds illustrating different ways of thinking and living. Fantasy fiction is uniquely suited as a form of climate fiction, with its immersive, subversive qualities, prioritization of the nonhuman, and a tendency towards sprawling, multiple-volume epic series. This paper explores two categories of climate fantasy themes. One category is recovery—regaining a clear view of the natural world. The other is …

“Salvation Must Be Communicated”: An Ecumenical Reading Of The Place Of The Lion, Avery-Claire Galloway Oct 2026

“Salvation Must Be Communicated”: An Ecumenical Reading Of The Place Of The Lion, Avery-Claire Galloway

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

While previous scholarship has cautioned against a reductive tendency in the analysis of Charles Williams’s work, this paper offers an analysis that explores the importantly multiplicable nature of meaning used in one of Williams’s most bizarre novels, The Place of the Lion. A close reading of a remark from the novel’s heroine that “salvation must be communicated” provides a lens by which the entire novel can be read, revealing how Williams presents a specific, culture-centered version of Christianity where communication leads to a salvation that is more cultural than doctrinal, more than the erasure of sins, but an experience …

The Path Of Wisdom: Reassessing Tolkien’S Paremiology In The Hobbit And The Lord Of The Rings, Luis J. Tosina Fernández Oct 2026

The Path Of Wisdom: Reassessing Tolkien’S Paremiology In The Hobbit And The Lord Of The Rings, Luis J. Tosina Fernández

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Using previous scholarship on the use of proverbs in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, the present study reevaluates Tolkien’s use of proverbs in the series, with special attention to the use of pseudoproverbs and trying to provide sources that may have served as inspiration for the creation of Middle-earth proverbs. After close inspection of The Hobbit and the three parts of The Lord of the Rings, the findings point towards a less frequent use of proverbs than anticipated or presumed by previous authors. Moreover, despite including a far from negligible number of pseudoproverbs, for many of which …

Expanding Ai Literacy: The 5cs Of News Literacy In The Era Of Generative Ai, Seth Ashley, Adam Maksl, Paul Cook Oct 2026

Expanding Ai Literacy: The 5cs Of News Literacy In The Era Of Generative Ai, Seth Ashley, Adam Maksl, Paul Cook

Journal of Media Literacy Education Pre-Prints

This article adapts the 5Cs framework of news literacy—context, creation, content, circulation, and consumption—to media environments shaped by generative artificial intelligence. We argue that prevailing discussions of AI literacy overemphasize technical or functional competencies while underemphasizing the social, cultural, political, and communicative systems in which AI operates. Drawing on previous research, we define AI literacy as knowledge of the technical, social, and ethical dimensions of AI-mediated content production, distribution, and consumption, along with the critical capacities needed to exercise agency within those processes. We show how the 5Cs can be reinterpreted for generative AI environments and integrate pedagogical implications for …

Asymmetric Workload Offloading For Real-Time Media Moderation On A Local Device Network, Vivek Kushwaha Oct 2026

Asymmetric Workload Offloading For Real-Time Media Moderation On A Local Device Network, Vivek Kushwaha

Defensive Publications Series

Real-time media moderation on resource-constrained devices, for example, smart televisions, may present computational challenges, while cloud-based solutions can introduce latency and privacy concerns. A system can distribute computational workloads for content moderation across a local area network, such as a Wi-Fi network. A primary media device can operate a lightweight trigger agent to heuristically scan for potential anomalies in a media stream. Upon detection, a segment of the media may be offloaded to one or more available secondary devices, for instance, smartphones or personal computers, on the network. These secondary devices can perform computationally intensive analysis using advanced models and …

Resilient Automated Communication Management Using Limit-Aware Orchestration And Persistence-First Logging, Parnika Singhal, Martin Pauser-Cowman Oct 2026

Resilient Automated Communication Management Using Limit-Aware Orchestration And Persistence-First Logging, Parnika Singhal, Martin Pauser-Cowman

Defensive Publications Series

In some large-scale data processing environments, such as customer relationship management platforms, automated systems for managing inbound communications can be unreliable. These systems, which can be configured to filter non-actionable cases, may fail silently when platform-enforced processing limits are exceeded, potentially leaving cases unresolved and affecting data integrity. A described technology can provide a framework featuring persistence-first logging and limit-aware dynamic orchestration. For example, before analysis, a durable tracking record can be created to facilitate auditability. An orchestration component can then evaluate platform resource availability and select an execution path, such as synchronous, asynchronous, or batch, to help mitigate failures. …

Multimodal Generative Biosignal Synthesis Using Continuous-Time Diffusion, Dongeek Shin Oct 2026

Multimodal Generative Biosignal Synthesis Using Continuous-Time Diffusion, Dongeek Shin

Defensive Publications Series

Everyday wearable devices, such as smartwatches, smart rings, and fitness trackers, track valuable health metrics, but analyzing this data becomes tricky when sensors record at different speeds, miss measurements, or get bumped during exercise. Traditional processing methods attempt to fix this by dropping or padding data, which visibly destroys important physiological details. This publication describes a generative artificial intelligence (AI) system that uses machine learning to seamlessly combine health signals recorded at different speeds, automatically reconstruct corrupted data gaps (data imputation), and dynamically generate a biometric profile or digital twin of the user’s physiology to run interactive “what-if” simulations and …

A system and method for managing intermediate computational states in a distributed artificial intelligence pipeline are disclosed. For each intermediate computational state generated during execution of the pipeline, a recomputation difficulty score is determined based on a plurality of factors comprising a computational cost of regenerating the intermediate computational state, a pipeline latency associated with regeneration, a depth of an upstream dependency chain, a semantic importance of the intermediate computational state, and a likelihood of subsequent reuse. The recomputation difficulty score is mapped to one of a plurality of difficulty classifications, and a storage placement action is selected based on …

Cellular Network Failure Diagnosis Using High-Throughput, Low-Latency Lazy Decoding, Longlong Zhu, Allan Ke, Kuo-Yu Huang Oct 2026

Cellular Network Failure Diagnosis Using High-Throughput, Low-Latency Lazy Decoding, Longlong Zhu, Allan Ke, Kuo-Yu Huang

Defensive Publications Series

Conventional diagnostic platforms for diagnosing complex field failures in cellular networks suffer from several drawbacks, such as garbage collection spikes or pauses, memory fragmentation, memory exhaustion, out-of-memory kernel crashes, and/or LLM context-window overflow. This disclosure describes techniques for diagnosing complex field failures in cellular networks by performing high-throughput, low-latency lazy decoding of raw binary trace files. For example, temporal anchors received from an edge device are used to selectively load and parse only the relevant frames of the binary trace file that correspond to the anomaly, bypassing non-relevant protocol frames without payload expansion. Protocol state trees are instantiated within a …

Real-Time Protocol Stream Triage And Adaptive Log Slicing At Edge Terminal, Longlong Zhu, Weiyue Huang, Li Wang Oct 2026

Real-Time Protocol Stream Triage And Adaptive Log Slicing At Edge Terminal, Longlong Zhu, Weiyue Huang, Li Wang

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure describes techniques for real-time triage of network anomalies in telecommunication protocol streams and adaptive slicing of binary trace files within an edge terminal. Network anomalies are classified based on a correlation between Layer 1 physical radio performance metrics and Layer 3 protocol state transitions. When a physical channel environmental failure is detected, transmission of diagnostic data is suppressed to save network bandwidth and wear of local flash memory storage. When a protocol stack software defect is detected, a time-bounded log snippet is extracted from a local memory buffer, the log snippet is prevented from being overwritten by subsequent …

Automated Power Measurement For Mobile Devices Using Completion Signaling, David Yu Oct 2026

Automated Power Measurement For Mobile Devices Using Completion Signaling, David Yu

Dynamic User Interface Calibration Of An External Display Using A Head-Mounted Device, Vivek Kushwaha Oct 2026

Dynamic User Interface Calibration Of An External Display Using A Head-Mounted Device, Vivek Kushwaha

Defensive Publications Series

User interfaces on external displays can be static, which may lead to suboptimal viewing experiences at varying distances, while some dynamic solutions can have limitations. Systems and methods are described that use a camera on a head-mounted device (HMD) to determine a user's spatial relationship to an external display. The HMD may capture video of the display, calculate the user's distance and viewing angle based on the display's appearance in the camera's view, and transmit this data wirelessly to the display. In response, the external display can dynamically adjust its user interface, for example, by modifying element sizes and information …
