Personalizing A Shared Display Using Context From Egocentric Vision, Vivek Kushwaha Oct 2026

Personalizing A Shared Display Using Context From Egocentric Vision, Vivek Kushwaha

Defensive Publications Series

Content recommendation systems for shared displays may lack awareness of a user's real-time physical context, potentially affecting the relevance of suggestions. The described techniques detail a system that can use a wearable computing device (e.g., smart glasses with an egocentric camera, a smart watch, etc.) to identify an object a user is interacting with. This object context can be validated and wirelessly communicated (e.g., via a local or personal area network) to a nearby shared display, such as a smart television or public kiosk.

On-Device Bidding Protocol For Context-Aware Dynamic Media Stream Sequencing, Vivek Kushwaha Oct 2026

On-Device Bidding Protocol For Context-Aware Dynamic Media Stream Sequencing, Vivek Kushwaha

Defensive Publications Series

Media consumption may be fragmented across various application-based services, and centralized recommendation engines can operate within separate ecosystems, which may introduce privacy considerations. This disclosure relates to systems and methods for dynamically compiling a personalized media stream on a client device (e.g., a smartphone, smart watch, television, or wearable device). The approach can utilize an on-device, multi-agent bidding protocol where a user agent may initiate a content auction by broadcasting abstracted, locally-derived context tokens to multiple streaming service agents that can represent different providers. These agents may then submit bids containing relevant content, and the user agent can select a …

Community-Based Water Management Through Cultural Ecosystem Services: Traditional Wisdom And Modern Adaptation In Senjoyo Spring, Indonesia, Puji Winarti, Sri Haryani, Sri Wardani, Langlang Handayani

Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development

Small-scale freshwater ecosystems play vital ecological and cultural roles. However, community-based water management (CBWM) often lacks a clear analytical approach to integrating cultural ecosystem services (CES) and traditional ecological knowledge (TEK), limiting the practical understanding of culturally grounded governance. To address this gap, this qualitative study explores the interactions between CES and TEK, analyzes their roles within CBWM, and identifies their implications for sustainable water governance. The integration between cultural value and local ecological knowledge makes Senjoyo Spring an appropriate location for this study. Data were collected through interviews with 20 key informants, field observations, forum group discussions (FGDs), and …

Beyond Fragmentation: A Multidimensional Framework For Green Product Innovation, David Mayorga, Jorge Tello-Gamarra, Martín Hernani-Merino, Sonia Oré Oct 2026

Beyond Fragmentation: A Multidimensional Framework For Green Product Innovation, David Mayorga, Jorge Tello-Gamarra, Martín Hernani-Merino, Sonia Oré

Journal of Management for Global Sustainability

Green product innovation (GPI) has become an essential strategy for companies to address environmental challenges while strengthening their competitiveness in a sustainable manner. However, important gaps remain in understanding how internal organizational factors interact with external pressures that shape their implementation. Existing conceptual frameworks have advanced the identification of these factors, but they often focus only on direct relationships and overlook the mechanisms that connect them. They also tend to adopt narrow perspectives that fail to capture the hybrid complexity observed in empirical evidence. This study aims to develop an integrative conceptual framework that synthesizes the antecedents, processes, and outcomes …

The Normative Canons Of Criminal Law, Brian G. Slocum Oct 2026

The Normative Canons Of Criminal Law, Brian G. Slocum

Vanderbilt Law Review

The rule of lenity is an ancient maxim directing that ambiguities in criminal statutes be interpreted in favor of defendants. Courts rarely rely on the rule of lenity, though, and its future is currently being debated. Justice Kavanaugh argues for its elimination, even as Justice Gorsuch argues for it to be strengthened. Most commentators agree with Justice Gorsuch, typically advocating that the rule of lenity be made more powerful. This Article argues for a different approach: The rule of lenity can be strengthened by limiting it to resolving linguistic ambiguity.

This Article explains why the rule of lenity plays an …

Introduction

Unprofessional behavior in health professions education adversely affects patient care, team functioning, communication, and learner development. Traditional professionalism curricula often focuses on elements of professionalism (eg, integrity, respect, duty) that may fail to illuminate the relational consequences of unprofessional behaviors. We  developed an educational intervention that reframed professionalism through the lens of trust and entrustment.

Methods

The face-to-face intervention aimed to help learners analyze professional behaviors by examining their effects on patient safety, teamwork, and professional growth using a four-element trust framework. Beginning in February 2026, a multidisciplinary faculty /staff workgroup implemented a series of facilitated educational sessions across …

Community-Based Well Testing And Outreach To Mitigate Human Health Risk From Unsafe Drinking Water, W. Adam Sigler, Katharine Sutphen, Margaret J Eggers, Kaleena Miller, Michelle Grocke-Dewey

Journal of Extension

Twenty-two percent of groundwater wells tested nationwide have one or more contaminants above a health threshold, yet many private well owners are unaware of these risks because they have not tested their water. Researchers piloted a community well testing clinic for education/outreach and surveyed participants about outcomes. Two months later, 75% of participants with high or intermediate health risk water quality results had taken action or intended to, indicating that community private well testing clinics can be effective in mitigating human health risks from contaminated drinking water.

The End Of Unmeasured Exploitation: How A.S.M., C.A.S., And S.I.A. Challenge Digital Attention Capitalism, Delante Clark Oct 2026

The End Of Unmeasured Exploitation: How A.S.M., C.A.S., And S.I.A. Challenge Digital Attention Capitalism, Delante Clark

Graduate Scholarship and Creative Works

Digital attention capitalism generates value through the capture and monetization of human attention, yet it has historically lacked standardized mechanisms for measuring attention-related harm. This paper argues that the Attention Safeguard Models (A.S.M.), Cognitive Attentional Standards (C.A.S.), and Sociological Impact Assessment (S.I.A.) collectively challenge this system by introducing an integrated framework for classifying, measuring, and evaluating digital attention harm and its societal consequences. C.A.S. provides standardized measurement of digital attention harm, A.S.M. identifies and classifies patterns of attentional disruption and manipulation, and S.I.A. evaluates broader impacts on institutions, communities, civic engagement, education, social cohesion, and inequality. Together, these systems transform …

Decentralized Ambient Media Orchestration Via Semantic State Broadcasts, Vivek Kushwaha Oct 2026

Decentralized Ambient Media Orchestration Via Semantic State Broadcasts, Vivek Kushwaha

Defensive Publications Series

Some ambient media orchestration systems can be limited by centralized architectures that may require a primary controller to have pre-programmed knowledge of connected peripheral devices, which can present scalability challenges. A decentralized system can feature a primary media device (e.g., a smart television, speaker, or mobile computing device) that analyzes media content to generate and broadcast an abstract semantic state, such as mood or setting, over a local network (e.g., Wi-Fi or Bluetooth). Autonomous peripheral devices, for example, smart lights or haptic feedback units, can receive this semantic broadcast. These devices can then determine appropriate actions based on their hardware …

The Incommensurability-Preserving Coupler: A Non-Purchasable Recognition Balance Sized Only From The Thank-You Message, Beside Money Gifts, Time Pledges And Prepaid Item Gift Codes, With The Merchant's Own Item Price As The Only Exchange Rate And One Payment Type Per Gift Message, Thon Ly

Defensive Publications Series

This defensive publication's revision adds a third gift cargo and claims 8–11 to a dual-currency gift system in which peer-to-peer money gifts and non-transferable, expiring time pledges run as one economy with no exchange rate. The system also carries prepaid item gift codes, bought at a shop's own price, beside per-person recognition balances that cannot be bought, transferred or cashed. Each thank-you message's recognition amount is computed only from the message (its words, a sender-chosen sentiment marker, its recorded length, the parties it names, and a model's refinement within a fixed band), never from any money amount, item, price, length …

The B-Tag Recommendation Function: Privacy-Preserving Methodology For Ai-Mediated Commercial Tip Recommendation — Suggested Tip Amounts With Stated Reasons From Confidential Merchant Costs, Without Customer Tracking, Thon Ly

Defensive Publications Series

This paper discloses a method by which an AI agent recommends a voluntary payment amount, a suggested tip in a pay-what-you-want sale, and shows it with stated reasons, without tracking the customer and without revealing the merchant's costs. Six components are specified. (1) The merchant confidentially discloses a cost breakdown by category (materials, labor, a skill premium, overhead, regulatory cost and margin) to the recommender; the customer never sees it. (2) The recommended amount is a non-binding anchor: paying it, more, less or nothing completes the sale, and whether a customer accepted or overrode past suggestions is not recorded. (3) …

Autonomous Capability Acquisition For Decentralized Ai Agents, Gaurav Gupta Oct 2026

Autonomous Capability Acquisition For Decentralized Ai Agents, Gaurav Gupta

Defensive Publications Series

Systems and methods are described for the autonomous acquisition of procedural capabilities by decentralized artificial intelligence (AI) agents operating on client edge devices. For example, a hybrid hub-and-spoke architecture could be used, comprising a centralized platform functioning as a marketplace and decentralized agents on client devices, such as smartphones, wearable devices, or smart home appliances. An agent may identify a functional gap, discover a suitable capability on the platform via a standardized agent-to-agent communication protocol, and procure it using an agent-native payment protocol via cryptographically signed intent and cart mandates, potentially without human-in-the-loop confirmation. An acquired capability can then be …

Onboard Method For Detecting And Mitigating Vehicle Encounters With Downed Electrical Power Lines, Anonymous Oct 2026

Onboard Method For Detecting And Mitigating Vehicle Encounters With Downed Electrical Power Lines, Anonymous

Defensive Publications Series

Severe weather can cause energized power lines to fall onto or near roadways. Some downed lines produce visible sparks or audible noise, others may provide no obvious warning. An energized line may also create a hazardous voltage gradient in the surrounding ground. Human drivers may recognize visible indications and avoid the area, but an autonomous vehicle (AV) requires an onboard method to identify this uncommon condition and respond safely. The proposed method enables an AV to detect indications of this potential hazard, avoid approaching or crossing a suspected downed power line when conditions permit, alert occupants not enter a suspected …

Defensive Publications Series

This paper discloses a brand-identity system in which each element of a logo does functional work beyond recognition. (I) A logo made by rotating an unmodified heart silhouette 45° clockwise, so that it reads at once as a heart and as the capital letter B — a reading that survives at favicon size because it depends on no internal whitespace. (II) A product-naming convention in which every product takes a one-letter prefix that is the logo's own letter reading, so the prefix cannot come apart from the mark. (III) A logo animation with a cardiac morphology — two pulses, the …

Transparency As Enforcement: Anti-Abuse Without Legal Contract Machinery — Community Disclosure In Place Of Terms-Of-Service Enforcement, Limited To Incurred Obligations, Thon Ly

Defensive Publications Series

This paper discloses a design pattern for abuse prevention in online platforms and shared-fund applications that replaces terms-of-service enforcement, dispute resolution and account termination with disclosure: the conduct to be policed is made visible to the bounded community it affects, and that community's own response is the sanction. Three properties make disclosure work as enforcement: the visibility itself is the mechanism, the response is proportioned by the community rather than by a binary rule, and participants join knowing what will be visible. Two deployments are specified: disclosure to a family of every reward its steward receives from the family's shared …

Dependency-Aware Speculative Proxy Cache For Multi-Turn Llm Agentic Workflows, Rajkumar Baskaran, Ishani Basu, Sudhindra Desai Oct 2026

Dependency-Aware Speculative Proxy Cache For Multi-Turn Llm Agentic Workflows, Rajkumar Baskaran, Ishani Basu, Sudhindra Desai

Defensive Publications Series

Systems and methods are described for caching and processing requests associated with a multi-turn agentic workflow. A proxy between a client and a large language model (LLM) API receives a request associated with a turn of the multi-turn agentic workflow and determines a cache key based on input information associated with the turn and an index of the turn. The proxy determines whether a cache entry corresponding to the cache key is valid based on a dependency of the cache entry on one or more external resources and, when valid, provides a cached response to the client. The proxy further …

Low-Light Vicinity Navigation Using Multi-Spectral Sensor Fusion, Arunoday Bhattacharya, Vidyadhar Ramakrishna Adiraju, Qiuxuan Wu

Defensive Publications Series

Navigating low-light or unfamiliar environments presents significant hazards, as traditional global positioning systems (GPS) lack granular proximity awareness and frequently fail indoors. A system and method are disclosed for a wearable device, such as extended reality glasses, that uses multi-spectral sensor fusion to generate real-time three-dimensional proximity and navigation maps. The system can be configured to fuse data from near-infrared active illumination, direct time-of-flight sensors, ultra-low-light red, green, blue (RGB) cameras, integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) signals, and/or barometric sensors. A tiered sensor activation strategy also manages power consumption based on environmental needs. The processed sensor data can be combined …
