Design, Simulation, And Experimentation Of A Box Barge Model Under Asymmetrical Conditions, Kylie Sink May 2026

Design, Simulation, And Experimentation Of A Box Barge Model Under Asymmetrical Conditions, Kylie Sink

Senior Honors Theses

This study investigates the ability of numerical simulations to predict vessel motion responses under asymmetrical loading conditions. A raked barge model was designed, constructed, and tested in a towing tank to evaluate the response amplitude operators (RAOs) for heave, roll, and pitch under various wave conditions. The model included six internal compartments that allowed different flooding scenarios to be simulated in order to create asymmetric loading conditions. Experimental testing was conducted under head seas (0 degrees) and beam seas (90 degrees) with multiple wave periods.

A numerical model of the vessel was developed using GHS to generate predicted RAOs for …

Experimentation To Study Ship Motions Under Asymmetrical Conditions, Elise Simon May 2026

Experimentation To Study Ship Motions Under Asymmetrical Conditions, Elise Simon

Senior Honors Theses

The pioneers of ship motion analysis often used the symmetry assumption to reduce computation time and complexity. For the symmetry assumption to be valid, a ship must be upright with no heel angle, which is rarely the case. An increased interest in damaged ships has motivated further analysis of ship motions in the asymmetric condition; however, only a limited number of physical experiments have been conducted in towing tanks. This paper presents an experiment carried out to analyze vessel motions in the asymmetric condition for a box barge model. The method includes model construction, experiment setup, the test matrix, and …

Preservice Teachers’ Noticing Of Students’ Quantitative And Covariational Reasoning In Dynamic Mathematical Situations, Alfred M. Limbere, Joseph Dinapoli, Steven Greenstein May 2026

Preservice Teachers’ Noticing Of Students’ Quantitative And Covariational Reasoning In Dynamic Mathematical Situations, Alfred M. Limbere, Joseph Dinapoli, Steven Greenstein

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Understanding rate of change requires reasoning about measurable quantities and how one quantity changes relative to another. To support this kind of reasoning, teachers should develop the ability to notice students’ quantitative and covariational reasoning. This study examines how preservice teachers (PSTs) attend to, interpret, and respond to students’ quantitative and covariational reasoning in video-based analyses of water-filling rate-of-change tasks. Drawing on relevant research, professional noticing is examined through the lenses of quantitative reasoning and covariational reasoning. Using a design-based qualitative approach, secondary PSTs participated in structured analyses of students’ problem-solving discussions related to rate of change. Data were collected …

Application Of Path Analysis To Determine The Impact Of Age And Sex On The Neural Circuits That Promote Nicotine Withdrawal Severity, Veronika Espinoza May 2026

Application Of Path Analysis To Determine The Impact Of Age And Sex On The Neural Circuits That Promote Nicotine Withdrawal Severity, Veronika Espinoza

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The rising prevalence of electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use presents a major public health concern, particularly in adolescent females who are most susceptible to nicotine use and its long-term negative health consequences. The goal of this dissertation was to utilize preclinical rodent models to understand how group differences in age and sex influence neural activation patterns in brain circuits believed to promote nicotine withdrawal. Prior pre-clinical work, conducted largely in male rodents, has established that there are two major brain pathways that modulate the behavioral effects of nicotine withdrawal. These include the mesolimbic and medial habenula-interpeduncular nucleus (MHb-IPN) pathways. To assess …

The Mouse At The Border: Magic, Money, And Manufactured Identity, Ricardo Manuel Hinojosa May 2026

The Mouse At The Border: Magic, Money, And Manufactured Identity, Ricardo Manuel Hinojosa

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This thesis investigates the methods by which The Walt Disney Company constructs and negotiates representations of Latine, gender, and queer identities within contemporary animation, with a particular emphasis on Coco (2017), Encanto (2021), and Wish (2023). Through a critical and intersectional lens, this research posits that Disney strikes a balance between cultural specificity and global market appeal, often leading to representations that are visually elaborate yet narratively limited. Both Coco and Encanto showcase a significant engagement with cultural traditions and themes such as memory and generational trauma; however, they ultimately fall short of thoroughly addressing systemic issues like colonialism and …

Microcosms & Warscapes, Heather J. Lathers May 2026

Microcosms & Warscapes, Heather J. Lathers

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This poetry collection features sensory-centered writing and common objects, scenes, and interactions to authentically capture the multi-perspective and nuanced experiences of wartime. Detailed language is critical when poets become mouthpieces for those enduring war's pain. Focusing closely on items such as teacups, boots, bones, mud, rice, and rats creates a kind of intimacy not often found in war writing. Specific conflicts addressed include World War I, Vietnam, and The Cambodian Genocide. The poems here, in various forms and voices, aim to spotlight the lost, marginalized, abused, and forgotten-- the much-needed humanity war stories tend to neglect. Ultimately, these pieces seek …

Novel Roles Of G-Beta-Gamma Signaling In Microtubule Dynamics And Neurodegeneration, Diana I. Olivas May 2026

Novel Roles Of G-Beta-Gamma Signaling In Microtubule Dynamics And Neurodegeneration, Diana I. Olivas

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Neurodegenerative disorders (NDDs), including Alzheimer's disease (AD), are characterized by progressive neuronal dysfunction, cytoskeletal disruption, and cognitive decline. Although Tau hyperphosphorylation and neurofibrillary tangle (NFT) formation are classical hallmarks of AD, emerging evidence suggests that microtubule (MT) dysfunction may precede and occur independently of Tau pathology. Understanding upstream regulators of MT dynamics is therefore critical for elucidating early mechanisms of neurodegeneration. Previous work from our laboratory demonstrated that G protein βγ (Gβγ) subunits directly interact with tubulin and promote MT assembly. However, the mechanism of Gβγ signaling in neuronal cytoskeletal stability and neurodegeneration remained poorly understood. The present study investigated …

Drug Repurposing Against Giardia Targeting Lipid Rafts, Extracellular Vesicles, And Sphingolipid Synthesis, Breanna Chantal Pence

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Giardia lamblia is a protozoan parasite responsible for the intestinal disease giardiasis worldwide. Giardia is one of the major intestinal parasites in the world, with over 500,000 new cases annually. Symptoms of giardiasis include diarrhea, abdominal pain, and nausea. Children are particularly vulnerable to giardiasis, with cases of malnutrition, stunted growth, and cognitive impairment in countries where the disease is endemic. Giardia consists of two morphologic forms: an infective cyst which transmits the disease and a motile trophozoite which attaches to the epithelium of the small intestine during infection. Metronidazole is a common treatment for giardiasis, but cases of toxicity …

Daughters Of The Road, Kristen Marie Sche May 2026

Daughters Of The Road, Kristen Marie Sche

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The beloved Road Novel has long been a tale submerged in the coming-of-age story following men as they search for themselves along the American highways. The genre can vary from journeys of families seeking refuge or tackling a task to men seeking answers to something missing in their lives. However eclectic the genre, it lacks in the pilgrimage of girls finding what the road can bring to them in a literary fictional context. This thesis provides a novel written in the popular genre while exploring themes of sisterhood, grief, and inclusion through the context of a hybrid form of narration …

Language Control Over Structural Representation In Bilinguals, Anahy Barragan-Diaz May 2026

Language Control Over Structural Representation In Bilinguals, Anahy Barragan-Diaz

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In daily life, bilinguals sometimes speak each of their languages in situations where the other language cannot be understood. To avoid saying words in the wrong language in such situations, bilinguals inhibit lexical representations from the non-target language (Green, 1998). But do they inhibit structural representations? This study investigated how inhibitory control operates over structural representations in English-dominant Spanish-English bilinguals via a picture description task. An experimental group was asked to describe dative-eliciting pictures in English (Baseline Phase), followed by dative pictures in Spanish (Manipulation Phase), and once again dative pictures in English (Target Phase), while a control group followed …

Impaired Tunability Of Brain State And Motor Dysfunction In A Mouse Model Of Rett Syndrome, Victoria Kindler Norman May 2026

Impaired Tunability Of Brain State And Motor Dysfunction In A Mouse Model Of Rett Syndrome, Victoria Kindler Norman

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Rett syndrome (RTT) is a rare neurological disorder, caused by disrupted function of the MECP2 gene, resulting in impaired cognitive and motor functions. Previous studies suggest that although MECP2 has important functions throughout the body, the etiological origins of RTT-related dysfunction should be sought within the brain. However, it remains a mystery how neural population dynamics are altered in the RTT brain and how these alterations relate to motor dysfunction. Previous studies using an RTT mouse model point to abnormal correlations among firing rates of neurons. Here we hypothesize that such disrupted neural activity correlation could be caused by abnormal …

How To Make Tamales: Stories, Jeanette Colby May 2026

How To Make Tamales: Stories, Jeanette Colby

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In all its intersectionality, I see my thesis as a female journey of identity and maturation. A common theme in my writing always leads back to my upbringing in some way; my history, memories, and beliefs inevitably plague the storytelling animal that lives within me. These different kinds of narratives represent all the parts of my identity. At the same time, the fictional scenes allow me to dramatize and interpret specific life events, while the mythic narratives provide a symbolic framework for exploring psychological and spiritual truths that might transcend conventional logic. Almost all of these pieces reflect various aspects …

Metabolomics In The Dryland Critical Zone: The Role Of Soil Metabolites In Phosphorus Acquisition, Kalpana Kukreja May 2026

Metabolomics In The Dryland Critical Zone: The Role Of Soil Metabolites In Phosphorus Acquisition, Kalpana Kukreja

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Earth's Critical Zone (CZ) plays a key role in sustaining life through carbon, water, and nutrient cycling from the top of the canopy to the groundwater. A key feature of critical zone research is the integration of multiple interdisciplinary techniques. An emerging set of techniques that can add to this approach is the field of metabolomics, the quantification and study of comprehensive metabolite profiles. In this dissertation, I apply metabolomics to address knowledge gaps in dryland critical zone ecosystems, specifically how soil metabolite dynamics influence biogeochemical processes, and with a particular emphasis on phosphorus (P) cycling in the Chihuahuan Desert. …

Salience Network Circuit Dynamics In Distress Tolerance And Drug-Seeking Vulnerability, Marina Alicia Smoak May 2026

Salience Network Circuit Dynamics In Distress Tolerance And Drug-Seeking Vulnerability, Marina Alicia Smoak

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The psychological distress experienced during drug withdrawal can lead individuals with substance use disorder to abandon their goal of abstinence. Numerous human studies demonstrate that an inability to persist in challenging, goal-directed behavior while experiencing psychological distress is associated with multiple stages of substance use, including relapse. This behavioral construct is referred to as low distress tolerance (DT). Rodent models of DT similarly show that low DT predicts elevated cocaine relapse, particularly when DT is assessed following extended abstinence. This abstinence period corresponds with the incubation of craving, a phenomenon characterized by progressively increased cocaine-seeking over time. Importantly, relapse vulnerability …

Overcoming Glioblastoma Resistance To Temozolomide With New Derivatives: Design, Synthesis, And Mechanistic Studies, Hualin Zhang May 2026

Overcoming Glioblastoma Resistance To Temozolomide With New Derivatives: Design, Synthesis, And Mechanistic Studies, Hualin Zhang

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is an aggressive brain tumor with rapid progression and poor prognosis. Although temozolomide (TMZ) remains a central component of standard therapy, its clinical benefit is limited and resistance frequently emerges through DNA repair pathways, particularly O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT). Because DNA cross-links are generally more difficult to repair than monoalkylated lesions, we hypothesized that TMZ derivatives bearing protein-reactive functionality might generate damage that is less susceptible to MGMT-mediated resistance. Guided by this rationale, we designed a new class of N3-modified TMZ derivatives containing covalent warheads, developed a synthetic route compatible with the chemical instability of the TMZ scaffold, …

Characterization Of The Antiviral Activity Of Mouse Schlafen Proteins, Wendy Paola Alvarez Leal May 2026

Characterization Of The Antiviral Activity Of Mouse Schlafen Proteins, Wendy Paola Alvarez Leal

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The goal of this work was to characterize the anti-viral role of mouse Schlafen8 and Schlafen9. Expression of these proteins is induced by type I interferon in response to viral infections. Importantly, their human functional orthologs exhibit anti-viral functions, and the structural element required for these activities are conserved in Schlafen8 and Schlafen9. Therefore, it is expected that these proteins will also impair viral replication. An important limitation in this field is that the anti-viral function of human SLFNs has been evidenced only in in vitro cellular models. No informative mutations have been described in human populations so far. Thus, …

Three hypotheses were reviewed, finding that religious affiliation has a positive correlation with a defendant’s propensity to plead …

Marvelous And Disturbing: Surreal Imagery, Elaboration And The Limits Of Persuasion In Women's Health Journalism, Shelby Elizabeth Gill May 2026

Marvelous And Disturbing: Surreal Imagery, Elaboration And The Limits Of Persuasion In Women's Health Journalism, Shelby Elizabeth Gill

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Since the 1930s, surrealism has lent its abstract hand to journalism, offering a visual language for topics that resist literal depiction. Given its historical and often fraught association with the female form, surrealist imagery has found a natural home in editorial coverage of women's health, most recently in reporting on endometriosis, a condition whose invisible, stigmatized and difficult-to-articulate experience makes conventional photojournalism an inadequate representational tool. The present study experimentally compared surreal imagery, realistic imagery and a text-only control condition to assess their effects on knowledge acquisition, comprehension, attitudinal responses, perceived risk and behavioral intentions related to endometriosis in a …

In-Vitro Testing Of Light Wavelength To Detect Clots In Neonatal Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Circuitry, Amanda Holmes May 2026

In-Vitro Testing Of Light Wavelength To Detect Clots In Neonatal Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Circuitry, Amanda Holmes

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Background: Neonates requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) are at high risk for thrombotic complications, which contribute substantially to morbidity and mortality. Current circuit surveillance methods rely on intermittent visual inspection and indirect laboratory markers, both of which often detect thrombosis only after clinically significant progression. Optical approaches offer a non-invasive alternative for earlier clot visualization, yet the influence of illumination wavelength on detection performance under realistic ECMO conditions remains incompletely characterized.

Methods: This study evaluated wavelength-dependent clot detection performance in a controlled in-vitro neonatal ECMO circuit model using a portable imaging prototype designed to emulate bedside workflow. Twelve independent ECMO …

Enhancing Walleye (Ogaa) Recruitment: Evaluating Assisted Reproduction As A Mitigation Strategy, Douglass Keiser

Biology Graduate Theses

Over the past several decades, cold- and cool-water fish populations across the Upper Midwest, including Minnesota and Wisconsin, have shown troubling signs of decline. Among the most affected is the walleye/Ogaa (Sander vitreus), a species deeply embedded in the ecological balance, cultural identity, and economic vitality of the region, and central to the lifeways, treaty-reserved rights, and resource stewardship of Tribal Nations, including Ojibwe communities across the Upper Midwest. Despite ongoing stocking efforts and harvest regulations, many lake systems have experienced persistent declines in natural recruitment, prompting resource agencies to investigate the underlying causes. One such system is …

Evaluating Management Strategies And Technology To Improve Grazing Efficiency, Thomas E. Aquino May 2026

Evaluating Management Strategies And Technology To Improve Grazing Efficiency, Thomas E. Aquino

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Increasing land costs and labor constraints continue to challenge beef producers. More intensive practices can increase harvest efficiency; however, many producers are deterred from implementing them due to increased labor and management considerations. Virtual fencing (VF) may provide a reduced labor alternative to traditional fencing for managing intensive grazing. This dissertation evaluated management strategies and VF technology to improve grazing efficiency of stocker cattle systems. In Experiment 1, VF was used to effectively manage groups of steers grazing in adjacent paddocks separated by only virtual boundaries. There was no difference in VF containment (99%) when steers were grazing co-fenced, with …

A Behavior Analytic Blueprint For Rapport-Building: Investigating The Key Elements For Success, Nelmar Jacinto Cruz May 2026

A Behavior Analytic Blueprint For Rapport-Building: Investigating The Key Elements For Success, Nelmar Jacinto Cruz

Theses and Dissertations

Rapport can be defined as a positive relationship between people built through specific actions. Building rapport can benefit organizations by improving performance and increasing work satisfaction. Despite these benefits, research on rapport remains scarce. Curry et al. (2019) completed the most recent rapport study and found that rapport-building led to increased productivity and discretionary effort. The present study replicated and extended Curry et al. (2019) and addressed three limitations of their research: the lack of a control group, the large disparity in time spent with the experimenter, and the rigidity of their rapport conversation script. The study was completed in …

Degradation And Metabolic Analysis Of Synthesized Quorum-Sensing Signals By The Model Eukaryote Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Adam Josef Bach May 2026

Degradation And Metabolic Analysis Of Synthesized Quorum-Sensing Signals By The Model Eukaryote Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Adam Josef Bach

Theses and Dissertations

Bacterial organisms can “talk” with one another on a colony-wide scale using a communication system known as quorum-sensing (QS) via chemical signals. These signals are produced at a basal rate throughout the life of the bacteria and are classified as autoinducers, which diffuse across the cell membrane. Once the critical concentration is reached, they begin to diffuse back into the cell and initiate a phenotypic change. As these signals exist outside the membrane of their producer, they are also accessible to other organisms. It has already been noted that some plant species uptake these compounds through their roots and break …

From Visual Events To Vibrotactile Feedback: A Semantic Vae Pipeline For Temporal Haptic Generation, Jiayi Liu May 2026

From Visual Events To Vibrotactile Feedback: A Semantic Vae Pipeline For Temporal Haptic Generation, Jiayi Liu

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Vibrotactile feedback can communicate system state, interaction progress, and event salience through short physical sensations. For temporal visual events, however, effective feedback must align with both what an event means and how it unfolds over time, including rhythm, duration, intensity, and repetition. This thesis examines this problem through UI flows, a controlled and common HCI setting. The proposed semantic VAE pipeline represents each visual transition as semantic haptic events, described by behavior class, communicative role, style, strength, timing, and duration. These events guide a curated behavior atlas and a convolutional variational autoencoder. The atlas identifies interpretable regions of the learned …

The present dissertation responds to this gap by utilizing Meza’s bassoon works as a vehicle to delve into his life and artistic production, following a qualitative approach to answer questions about his career and musical style, the historical and compositional particularities of his …

Decomposition Study Using Pigs In Southeastern Nebraska During The Fall And Winter Seasons, Ryan Bodine May 2026

Decomposition Study Using Pigs In Southeastern Nebraska During The Fall And Winter Seasons, Ryan Bodine

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

When an individual is found deceased, one of the tools used in the identification process is estimating the post-mortem interval (PMI). This estimate is used to determine how long an individual has been deceased once their remains are found. To estimate an accurate PMI, knowing how decomposition is affected by external factors is key. The transition period from fall to winter in southeastern Nebraska consists of fluctuating temperatures as the seasons transfer from fall to winter. This thesis investigates how decomposition is affected during this transition period while also looking at two different environments that are common in Nebraska, prairies …

Intraday Cotton Futures Price Responses To World Agricultural Supply And Demand Estimates (Wasde) News, Owen Mclane Tyrone May 2026

Intraday Cotton Futures Price Responses To World Agricultural Supply And Demand Estimates (Wasde) News, Owen Mclane Tyrone

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Price discovery in agricultural futures markets is augmented by information about supply and demand, leading markets to react when public reports are released. Effective price discovery in futures markets is vital to allocate physical commodities across time, synthesize information, and provide hedging tools. Price discovery in cotton markets is unique because it is less liquid than many other commodity markets. Therefore, our objective is to measure the initial price response in the cotton futures market to unanticipated ending stocks information in the WASDE report; then determine if markets continue to adjust after the initial price change. To meet our objective, …

Fret Studies On The Binding Of Fibroblast Growth Factor (Fgf) Proteins To The Hard Corona Of Cuins2-Based Quantum Dots, Colette Robinson May 2026

Fret Studies On The Binding Of Fibroblast Growth Factor (Fgf) Proteins To The Hard Corona Of Cuins2-Based Quantum Dots, Colette Robinson

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF) has been shown to be an important protein in angiogenesis, which is critical in developmental biology and wound healing but has also been implicated in cancer metastasis. FGF interacts with an FGF Receptor (FGFR) to signal the onset of angiogenesis but the detailed mechanism of angiogenesis, and particularly its regulation, is still largely unknown. Imaging the interaction of FGF with FGFR in biologically-relevant environments, such as directly in cells, is key towards furthering this understanding and may eventually aid in the development of better cancer treatments. CuInS2/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) are an attractive fluorescent probe to …

Nadh Flim Reveals Cellular Bioenergetics And Mitochondrial Morphology During Drosophila Convergent Extension, Maria Espana Pena May 2026

Nadh Flim Reveals Cellular Bioenergetics And Mitochondrial Morphology During Drosophila Convergent Extension, Maria Espana Pena

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Mitochondria are dynamic organelles that can fragment or fuse to support different bioenergetic demands and cellular processes, although the role of mitochondrial fission and fusion during embryonic development is not well understood. Fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) of the mitochondrial cofactor NADH can be used to visualize mitochondrial networks and infer aspects of cellular bioenergetics in a label-free manner. We used NADH FLIM to test whether germband cells undergo changes in cellular metabolism during Drosophila convergent extension (CE)––a process in which hundreds of epithelial cells undergo coordinated intercalation to elongate the embryo. Contrary to our expectations, we did not observe significant …
