Sex-specific penetrance in autosomal-dominant Mendelian conditions is largely understudied. The neurodevelopmental disorder Pilarowski-Bjornsson syndrome (PILBOS) was initially described in females. Here, we describe the clinical and genetic characteristics of the largest PILBOS cohort to date, showing that both sexes can exhibit PILBOS features, although males are overrepresented. A mouse model carrying a human-derived Chd1 missense variant (Chd1R616Q/+) displays female-restricted phenotypes, including growth deficiency, anxiety, and hypotonia. Orchiectomy unmasks a growth-deficiency phenotype in male Chd1R616Q/+ mice, while testosterone rescues the phenotype in females, implicating androgens in phenotype modulation. In the gnomAD and UK Biobank databases, rare missense variants …

Abiotic stress conditions impair plant metabolism partly by inducing the excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Melatonin, a multifunctional indoleamine, has emerged as an important regulator of plant responses to oxidative stress. This review highlights recent findings on the interactions among phytomelatonin, ROS homeostasis, antioxidant metabolism, photosynthetic protection, stress priming, and abiotic stress tolerance. We discuss how melatonin modulates the antioxidative response under diverse stress conditions and evaluate its effects on photosynthetic performance, ROS signaling, and membrane stability. Special attention is given to priming studies showing that melatonin pretreatment can improve stress tolerance. Emerging evidence from plant tissue culture …

Drought Priming Improves Waterlogging Tolerance In Alfalfa, But Less Effectively Than Waterlogging Priming, Gürkan Demi̇rkol, Ni̇lüfer Kara
Turkish Journal of Botany
Waterlogging severely restricts growth and productivity in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), necessitating effective strategies to improve stress tolerance. This study investigated whether drought priming or waterlogging priming could enhance tolerance to subsequent waterlogging stress in the alfalfa cultivar “Bilensoy-80”. Plants were subjected to drought priming, waterlogging priming, or no priming prior to progressive waterlogging stress for 0, 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20 days. Waterlogging priming consistently alleviated growth inhibition, maintained chlorophyll content, and reduced oxidative damage under prolonged stress. Drought priming was associated with partial cross-tolerance, particularly through improved root growth, plant water status, and oxidative stress responses, although …

Unmasking Myths And Facts About Actinomyces Species: Analysis From A Tertiary Care Hospital, Kanak Vats, Bhawna Sharma, Deepthi Nair
Muthanna Medical Journal
Actinomycetes are gram-positive, non-spore-forming, filamentous anaerobic bacteria that constitute part of the normal oral and intestinal flora and are widely distributed in the environment. Actinomycosis is a chronic, suppurative granulomatous infection frequently associated with deep-seated and recurrent infections. This five-year retrospective study (June 2018–June 2024) aimed to determine the prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of Actinomyces species isolated from various clinical specimens. Samples received for Anaerobic culture and sensitivity were processed as per standard protocol and antibiogram was obtained for the respective pathogen isolated. Of the 508 specimens processed, 109 (21.4%) yielded pathogenic anaerobes, among which Actinomyces species accounted for …

BACKGROUND: Bloodstream infections (BSI) are a significant contributor to morbidity and mortality among hospitalized patients. Rapid diagnosis of BSI is critical for timely and appropriate clinical management, but current diagnostic strategies have a prolonged turnaround time or only identify select pathogens with minimal prognostic information.
METHODS: We examined serial serologic samples from 77 intensive care unit (ICU) patients at time points before, during, and after diagnosis of presumptive BSI to identify host-derived protein biomarkers associated with specific organisms and with clinical outcomes in BSI. ICU patients with and without BSI were included. Two candidate biomarkers, tissue metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1) and …

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly reshaping food engineering by providing data-driven tools for safeguarding food safety, ensuring quality assurance, and improving human health outcomes. This review synthesizes current evidence on the application of machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, and the Internet of Things (IoT) across the food production continuum, from raw material inspection to consumer-facing nutrition guidance. We examine how convolutional neural networks, hyperspectral imaging, and sensor-fusion approaches enable rapid, non-destructive detection of contaminants and pathogens, and how predictive models support shelf-life estimation and quality grading. We further discuss AI-enabled traceability systems, including blockchain-integrated supply chains, and the growing …

The Effect Of Physiologic Parameters And Vasoactive Agents On Venous Resistance, Mean Circulatory Filling Pressure, And Venous Return: Multivariable Modeling Using High-Fidelity Physiologic Data And Machine Learning, Rohit S. Loomba, Juan Farias, Enrique Villarreal, Saul Flores
Journal of Pediatric Intensive Care
Introduction: Venous parameters such as mean circulatory filling pressure, venous resistance, and venous return have largely remained theoretical concepts. In vivo characterization of these has not been frequent. This study utilized high-fidelity hemodynamic data to characterize these parameters and associated effects of vasoactive agents and other physiologic parameters in children with single ventricle parallel circulation after the Norwood operation. Methods: Physiologic data for children after the Norwood operation was collected from the T3 system, which captures data at five-second intervals. Mean circulatory filling pressure, venous resistance, and venous pressure were calculated using previously validated equations and then modeled using vasoactive …

How Law Schools Can Better Cultivate A Culture Of Engagement And Dialogue, Anton Sorkin
How Law Schools Can Better Cultivate A Culture Of Engagement And Dialogue, Anton Sorkin
Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal
For the last few years, a competing culture has developed on university campuses based on what the National Jurist called the “protest generation.” These developments have seeped into law schools, creating not only tensions with the administrations, but also tensions between student organizations seeking to participate in accordance with their mission and purpose. Given the importance of legal education and the role of attorneys in society, this article advocates for law schools to cultivate a culture of engagement and dialogue by establishing private forums where student leaders may work out their differences in a civil and constructive manner. Within these …
