The credibility of nutritional research is dependent on the rigor with which studies are conducted and the ability for independent assessment to be performed. Despite the importance of these, more work is needed in the field of nutrition to buttress the trustworthiness of nutrition research. To develop and apply a process for evaluating the rigor, reproducibility, and verifiability of nutritional research, using the relationship between potato consumption and Colorectal Cancer (CRC) as a case study. We updated existing systematic reviews to include studies on potatoes and CRC, assessing their design, execution, and reporting quality. We attempted to reproduce and verify …

Movement Ecology And Population Dynamics Of Box-Nesting Black-Bellied Whistling-Ducks (Dendrocygna Autumnalis) In Louisiana, Katie E. Miranda
LSU Master's Theses
Understanding demographic and behavioral processes underlying population dynamics is essential for effective wildlife management, especially for species subject to harvest pressure or experiencing population shifts. Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks (Dendrocygna autumnalis) are currently undergoing a notable northward range expansion and are increasing in abundance across the southeastern United States, raising management concerns for both ecological and economic reasons. As a result, there is growing public support for a special Black-bellied Whistling-Duck-specific harvest season, yet little research has been conducted on this species, particularly within newly-established populations. To address this gap, I conducted this study with the goal of evaluating seasonal …

Immune cells elicit a continuum of transcriptional states after spinal cord injury (SCI). In mammals, inefficient debris clearance and chronic inflammation impede recovery and overshadow pro-regenerative immune functions. We found that zebrafish SCI elicits transient immune activation and efficient debris clearance. Transcriptomics and genetic ablation showed zebrafish macrophages are highly phagocytic and required for regeneration. Comparisons between zebrafish and mammalian macrophages identified transcription and immune response regulator (tcim) as an immune-enriched regenerative gene. Deletion of zebrafish tcim impairs phagocytosis and regeneration and activates a pro-inflammatory signature in leukocytes. Tcim expression in zebrafish and mouse macrophages establishes its conserved roles by …

Freshwater Harmful Algal Blooms (Habs) Public Health Message Efficacy Evaluation, Alexandra Benitez Gonzalez, Heather A. Triezenberg, Diane Doberneck, Abigail Bennett, Mark Rey
Freshwater Harmful Algal Blooms (Habs) Public Health Message Efficacy Evaluation, Alexandra Benitez Gonzalez, Heather A. Triezenberg, Diane Doberneck, Abigail Bennett, Mark Rey
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Harmful algal blooms (HABs) can present health risks to humans, animals, or ecosystems. Communicating with the public about HABs risks can be challenging because symptoms vary in type and severity across different individuals. However, people with underlying health conditions are often particularly vulnerable to exposure, and they may experience negative health outcomes if they lack awareness of the risks that HABs pose. Literature on risk communication suggests that the way messages are framed influences the impact on risk perception and behavioral intentions. To provide insight into how agencies and practitioners can more effectively communicate health risks from HABs, we designed …

Ion Channels As Targets For Parasiticides: A Brief Review Of Past, Present, And Future Directions, Josette V. Ricker, Mallory Mendenhall
Georgia Journal of Science
Scientists and healthcare providers have tried for decades to find parasite treatments that balance patient safety with efficacy in eliminating the pathogen. One approach is to target specifically the parasite’s important bodily functions while sparing the host. This brief review examines the historically significant antiparasitics - pyrethrins, picrotoxin, piperazine, and avermectins – all which specifically target parasite ion channels. We discuss the history of their discovery and use, which subsequently led to the development of new generations of parasiticides, and continues to inspire the search for safe and effective treatments.

Differential Effects Of Amiloride And Benzamil On Salt Taste Physiology And Behavior: The Case For Phasic Responses In The Generation Of Sodium Appetite, Amyra M. Issa
McNair Scholars Research Journal
The current experiment aims to investigate the relationship between the early phasic portion of salt taste transduction and sodium appetite. Prior research has identified two salt transduction pathways: a sodium-selective pathway, which is inhibited by amiloride or benzamil, and a non-selective pathway, which is insensitive to these blockers (Breslin & Spector, 2008). When presented with sodium solutions, sodium-depleted mice exhibit a behavior termed the “sodium appetite,” which results in voracious sodium consumption. The prevailing theory is that this behavior depends on neural activity of sodium-selective neurons (Breza & Contreras, 2012; Roitman & Bernstein, 1999). While previous studies have demonstrated that …
High Densities Of Large Herbivores Rapidly Disrupt Ecosystem Integrity, Jennifer A Krumins
High Densities Of Large Herbivores Rapidly Disrupt Ecosystem Integrity, Jennifer A Krumins
Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Human-induced high densities of large wild herbivores may pose a threat to natural ecosystems, modifying biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Although the negative impacts on individual taxa and processes are well documented, a comprehensive understanding of how ecosystem integrity responds to high herbivore densities remains limited. This study addresses this gap through an extensive herbivore-density manipulation experiment conducted in two Mediterranean woodlands. We established two scenarios of high red deer (Cervus elaphus) density, representative of some protected areas (similar to 30 individuals.km(2)) and intensively managed hunting estates (similar to 90 individuals.km(2)). We monitored 38 metrics encompassing a broad spectrum of biodiversity …
Learning Trajectories Of Online Batch Selection Methods, Luke Green
Learning Trajectories Of Online Batch Selection Methods, Luke Green
Theses and Dissertations
Modern deep neural networks achieve strong performance on large-scale datasets, but often require substantial training time. Online batch selection methods seek to reduce this cost by updating models on informative subsets of each batch rather than on all available examples. Recently introduced methods leverage teacher models and report substantial speedups, particularly in noisy-label settings. However, comparisons are often based on the number of epochs required to reach a target test accuracy, a coarse metric that is sensitive to implementation details and may obscure important differences in learning dynamics. In this thesis, we implement several online batch selection methods in a …

The discovery of genes encoding the volume-regulated anion channel (VRAC) has enabled detailed exploration of its cell type-specific roles in the brain. LRRC8A (SWELL1) is the essential VRAC subunit. We observed seizure-induced, subunit-specific changes in microglial VRAC expression and investigated its function using conditional KO (cKO) of LRRC8A in microglia. SWELL1 cKO mice exhibited a male-specific increase in kainate-induced seizure severity, yet showed paradoxical neuroprotection against seizure-associated neuronal loss. Mechanistically, SWELL1 deletion led to a cell-autonomous reduction in microglial density and decreased release of VRAC-permeable neuroactive metabolites, including taurine, GABA, and glutamate in culture. Additionally, impaired phagocytic kinetics and reduced …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Zinc Oxide (Zno) Nanoparticles: From Chemical To Green Synthesis, Kawa S. Sulaiman, Ayoub S. Karim
Baghdad Science Journal
The present research focuses on the synthesis and comparative analysis of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) produced through two distinct methodologies: a traditional sol-gel procedure and a sustainable green synthesis route. The green synthesis approach utilized Laurus Nobilis leaf extract as a natural reducing and stabilizing agent, offering an eco-friendly alternative to conventional chemical synthesis. To evaluate the structural, optical, and morphological properties of the resulting nanoparticles, both sets of samples were characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy, XRD, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), FTIR, and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM). The XRD patterns confirmed the successful formation of a hexagonal wurtzite …

Digraph And Graph Of Regular Rings With Some Properties, Shahla Moayad Kaleel, Haitham Nashwan Mohammed, Ahmad Mohammed Alghamdi, Ahmed Mohammed Ali, Eman Sultan Almotairi
Baghdad Science Journal
During this century, a new research trend has emerged wherein algebraic concepts are combined with graph theory, such as zero divisors, clean rings, ideals, and regular rings. Continuing this trajectory, the regular ring graph has been studied in two forms: the undirected graph and the directed graph. The vertex set consists of all regular elements in the ring ℜ, denoted by ℜ(ℜ), where the undirected graph is denoted by Γ(ℜ(ℜ)) and the directed graph by Ψ(ℜ(ℜ)). This study focuses on the rings Zn, where n = q, q², or 2q, and q is a prime number. In …

Copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) is a semiconductor that is chemically very stable, highly optically absorbing of visible light, and possesses good charge transport properties, so it is a promising material for optoelectronic devices and photodetectors. In this study, CuPc thin films with thickness range 146.4–632.4 nm were grown on ultrasonically cleaned glass substrates by thermal evaporation at a pressure of 2.2 × 10-5 torr. Structure, morphology, and optical properties were analyzed to study the effect of thickness on photoconductive response. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the films were polycrystalline monoclinic with preferred (312) orientation. AFM images showed increase in grain …

Coefficient Bounds For A New Subclass Of Meromorphic Multivalent Functions With Higher Derivatives Obtained From Bessel Function, Ali Musaddak Delphi
Baghdad Science Journal
The goal of this paper is to introduce a new subclass of meromorphic multivalent functions with higher derivatives inside a punctured open unit disk U*, by generalizing the Bessel function. The method used to derive the new findings on this topic is stated in section two of this paper. The product theorem between two functions and neighborhood properties was obtained using the recently discovered coefficient bounds for the new subclass. In addition, this paper attempted to address an important research gap in the subject of geometric function theory, which is the computational tools for coefficient bounds through the use …

Quasi-Mixing C0-Semigroups And Their Relations With Recurrent C0-Semigroups, Mansooreh Moosapoor, Otmane Benchiheb
Baghdad Science Journal
This article presents and investigates the concept of the quasi-mixing C0-semigroups. It is proved that the quasi-mixing of an invertible C0-semigroup is equivalent to the quasi-mixing of its inverse. The quasi-mixing vectors are defined and they are used to prove a sufficient condition for the quasi-mixing. It is established that the quasi-mixing of a C0-semigroup is equivalent to the quasi-mixing of any of its discretizations. The quasi-mixing of a C0-semigroup ( Tt )t ≥ 0, as it is demonstrated by this study, implies the quasi-mixing for each operator T …
Evaluation Of Home Loan Candidates Using Energy And Laplacian Energy In Hesitancy Fuzzy Zagreb Matrices, A. Abinaya, G. Deepa
Evaluation Of Home Loan Candidates Using Energy And Laplacian Energy In Hesitancy Fuzzy Zagreb Matrices, A. Abinaya, G. Deepa
Baghdad Science Journal
A hesitancy fuzzy graph is a type of generalized fuzzy graphs that reflects reluctance or uncertainty in interactions by assigning a variety of potential membership values rather than a single value to each vertex and edge. It offers an adaptable framework for simulating intricate systems with ambiguous, reluctant, or imperfect input. Topological measurements that capture and characterize a graph's structural features are called Zagreb indices, and they are obtained from vertex degrees. Although Zagreb indices and graph energies have been studied for intuitionistic fuzzy graphs, fuzzy graphs, and classical graphs, no work has been done to apply these ideas to …

Approximation In S-Normed Orlicz Spaces, Zainab Abdulmunim Sharba, Hawraa Abbas Almurieb, Samah Alhashemi
Baghdad Science Journal
Orlicz spaces generalize conventional Lebesgue spaces, providing a more flexible framework for analyzing functions. They are essential to functional analysis and related fields, particularly in approximation theory. This paper defines an Orlicz normed space equipped with an S-norm, where S is an outer function that satisfies certain conditions. Introducing norms via the outer function S is a general method that encompasses many cases of norms in Orlicz spaces. The relationship between S-norm and other norms on Orlicz spaces is established through several equivalences. Moreover, moduli of smoothness are of great interest in approximation theory, as they provide criteria …

Bottlebrush Polymer Conjugates For Enhanced Antisense Oligonucleotide Therapy In Myotonic Dystrophy Type 1, Yao Li, Gyu Seong Heo, Yongjian Liu, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Oligonucleotides are a promising class of genetic medicine for myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1), the most common adult-onset muscular dystrophy. However, poor muscle distribution of nucleic acid drugs following systemic administration has hindered drug development, and no curative treatment currently exists. DM1 pathology requires drug localization to the nucleus, where pathogenic mutant RNA is sequestered, posing additional challenges after cellular internalization regarding endosomal escape and nuclear uptake. Here, we show that a locked nucleic acid oligonucleotide targeting mutant CUG repeat RNA tracts, conjugated to a bottlebrush polymer, exhibits improved muscle distribution and potent correction of DM1-associated splicing dysregulation in a …

The Linnaean family of monkeys that includes baboons, macaques, and mandrills (among others) is notably characterized by large, extended muzzles that vary in lateral nasal dorsum profile. In paleontological studies, this variation is referred to as the anteorbital drop (AOD). Here, we first devise a method to quantify this phylogenetic character. We then employ quantitative genetic analyses using a MCMCglmm model of facial variation in a captive, pedigreed baboon colony (n = 934), including admixed individuals derived from at least two Papio species, from the Southwest National Primate Research Center to assess the quantitative variation of the AOD, its …
Characterizing The Relationships Between Hydrology, Soil Biogeochemistry, And Green Ash Canopy Structure In Emerald Ash Borer-Affected Wetlands, Eva Switala
Theses
The invasion of the emerald ash borer (EAB; Agrilus planipennis) has caused mass mortality of native ash trees (Fraxinus spp.), devastating forested wetlands in the northeastern United States. Fifteen years post-introduction, the long-term ecological shifts and "new normals" of these ecosystems remain poorly understood. This project characterized patterns in EAB-affected forested wetlands by evaluating soil characteristics, biogeochemical cycling, hydrology, and green ash canopy across 12 sites with varying initial ash presence. Results revealed a clear separation between biogeochemically active and less active sites. Hydrologic differences emerged as a key driver of biogeochemical cycling, with higher soil moisture significantly increasing rates …
