Effect Of Plant-Based Vs. Standard American Diet On Cardiovascular Parameters In College Students, Timothy J. Horanic
Effect Of Plant-Based Vs. Standard American Diet On Cardiovascular Parameters In College Students, Timothy J. Horanic
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This study examines how adherence to different dietary patterns—specifically a plant-based diet compared to the standard American diet—can influence physiological indicators tied to cardiovascular health, including heart rate variability (HRV), blood pressure (BP), and heart rate (HR). Among these markers, HRV is considered especially sensitive to autonomic nervous system (ANS) regulation and may offer earlier insight into physiological stress or dysfunction than HR or BP alone. Although nutritional habits are widely believed to impact heart health, few investigations have focused on how specific long-term diets affect autonomic and cardiovascular metrics in healthy, college-aged adults. This study aims to investigate if …

Honors Undergraduate Theses
This study examines the literary and linguistic relationships between Spain and Portugal during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries through literary works and their translations. A period characterized by the Iberian Union, vernacularization, and the consolidation of early modern literary systems. It explores the interaction of Spanish and Portuguese texts within a shared yet asymmetrical cultural space shaped by translation, genre adaptation, and hierarchies of linguistic prestige. The research employs comparative textual analysis grounded in historical sociolinguistics, philology, and translation studies. Key works analyzed include Alfonso X’s historiography, Francisco Rodrigues Lobo’s Corte na aldeia and its Spanish translation, and Luís de …

To Print A Remake: An Analysis Of Hollywood Remakes And Their Cultural Value, Connor F. Seaton
Honors Undergraduate Theses
In recent years, audiences and movie critics have expressed concern that Hollywood’s growing reliance on remakes, sequels, franchises, and similar adaptations has led to a broader worry that originality is fading from modern cinema and that the industry is instead focused on using adaptations to maximize profits. Although adaptation is often seen as a commercially driven framework for reproducing existing intellectual property in a new media format, this thesis argues that it should be recognized as an autonomous cultural category with its own artistic, historical, and social significance and merit. By analyzing adaptation scholarship and reviewing its complex historical development, …
The Role Of The Amygdala In Huntington Disease-Associated Aggression, Luis Torres
The Role Of The Amygdala In Huntington Disease-Associated Aggression, Luis Torres
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Huntington disease (HD) is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder caused by a trinucleotide CAG expansion in the huntingtin gene (HTT). HD is characterized by motor, cognitive, and psychiatric symptoms that significantly impact patient and caregiver quality of life. Psychiatric symptoms, including depression, anxiety, and irritability, are common manifestations of HD and can emerge years before the onset is clinically diagnosed. Aggression is a common and challenging psychiatric symptom in HD, often misunderstood and associated with caregiver stress, early institutionalization, and reduced quality of life. Despite its clinical impact, aggression in HD lacks effective, targeted treatment options. Similar to HD …

Catching The Forgotten: Repairing The Safety Net For Cofa Migrants In The United States, Brian Aguilar
Lewis & Clark Law Review
Citizens of the Freely Associated States—the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, and the Republic of Belau—are permitted to live and work in the United States without a visa under the Compacts of Free Association (COFA). Yet, for nearly three decades, COFA migrants were excluded from the federal public benefits safety net. This exclusion, a product of legislative oversight in the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996, devastated communities like the Marshallese in Springdale, Arkansas, who endured dangerous working conditions, poverty, and severe health vulnerabilities without access to critical federal benefits programs. While …

Quo Warranto In The Aftermath Of Loper Bright, Dennis Hall
Quo Warranto In The Aftermath Of Loper Bright, Dennis Hall
Lewis & Clark Law Review
In 2024, the Supreme Court did away with Chevron deference in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo. One previously undiscussed consequence of this decision is how it opens the door to a broader use of quo warranto corporate charter revocation. Quo warranto is a legal remedy held by the states that has fallen into relative obscurity, but it has the power to regulate large corporations that have strayed from the bounds of acceptable activity. This Comment examines the history of corporations and corporate oversight regulation in the United States, as well as the history of quo warranto as a remedy. Additionally, …

This study explores the development of Human Activity Recognition (HAR) systems capable of identifying suspicious activities to enhance security in public spaces. We propose an innovative solution that integrates LiDAR sensors with deep learning technologies. Our method employs advanced models operating on LiDAR point cloud, PV-RCNN for human detection, and LidarGait++ for classifying activities into categories such as standing or walking (non-suspicious) and sneaking or fighting (suspicious). Due to the scarcity of suitable real-world datasets for training such systems, we utilize a 3D simulation tool, Blender, to create realistic environments and generate labeled point cloud data. This synthetic dataset allows …

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a chronic autoimmune disease that negatively affects ~100,000 children under the age of 16 in the United States. About ~30% of these patients fail first-line drug therapy with low-dose methotrexate (MTX) due to poor tolerability or lack of efficacy. The SLCO1B1*14 allele is associated with increased MTX clearance and has been linked to reduced overall drug exposure and nonresponse to MTX in JIA patients. Herein, we describe transgenic hSLCO1B1*14 and hSLCO1B1*1 DBA1/J mSlco1b2 knock-out mice, which we used to assess arthritic response to MTX using the collagen-induced arthritis model. Mass spectrometry-based proteomics analysis revealed that …

Runt-Related Transcription Factor 2 Transcriptionally Represses Sirtuin 1 To Regulate Osteoclastogenesis And Tooth Eruption, Jie Li, Changqing Yan, Xinyi Sun, Chenying Zhang, Xiaozhe Wang, Yang Liu, Shuguo Zheng
Journal of Dental Sciences
Background/purpose: Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD), caused by Runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2) haploinsufficiency, features delayed tooth eruption. Although impaired osteoclastogenesis contributes to eruption failure, the direct molecular mechanisms linking RUNX2 deficiency to osteoclast dysfunction remain elusive. Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) is a critical regulator of osteoclastogenesis; however, whether it serves as a downstream effector of RUNX2 remains unexplored. This study aimed to elucidate the mechanistic link between RUNX2 and SIRT1 in regulating osteoclast differentiation and tooth eruption.
Materials and methods: Tooth eruption and osteoclast differentiation were assessed by micro-computed tomography and histological analysis in Runx2+/- mice. Chromatin immunoprecipitation quantitative polymerase chain …

A First Amendment Right To Know, David S. Ardia

This Article tackles an increasingly important question: Can police round up people on American streets and keep secret the names of those they detain without violating the First Amendment? Alarmingly, the government made this very argument in the summer of 2020 when it sought to break up Black Lives Matter protests occurring in cities across the country. Based in part on a Supreme Court decision from the 1970s involving access to prisons, the government argued that the First Amendment imposes no constraints on government secrecy. If it is true that the government can shield its exercise of police power from …

Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a major bioactive catechin in green tea, has attracted increasing attention in dentistry because of its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, matrix-modulating, and regenerative properties. This narrative review summarizes current evidence on the biological mechanisms, dental applications, and translational challenges of EGCG in oral healthcare. EGCG can modulate oxidative stress and inflammatory signaling pathways, including nuclear factor-kB (NF-kB), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2/heme oxygenase-1 (Nrf2/HO-1), and NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3)-related responses, and has activity against oral disease-associated microorganisms and biofilms. In periodontal therapy, EGCG has been investigated as an adjunct …

The Leeuwenhoek Paradox In Dental Artificial Intelligence: A Narrative Review Of Artificial Intelligence-Detected Subclinical Periapical Changes And Human-Labeled False Positives, Etyene Schnurr, Mario Parra, David M. Kim
Journal of Dental Sciences
This narrative review explores the “Leeuwenhoek Paradox,” a metaphorical and conceptual challenge that arises when artificial intelligence (AI) detects subtle periapical radiological changes that are not visible to human observers. Drawing on evidence from studies using two-dimensional and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging, this review critically examined the limitations of human-centered reference standards and recurrent discrepancies in AI-based periapical detection. The literature shows that AI systems frequently detect more periapical alterations than human experts. These findings may reflect early bone changes, as indicated by CBCT-based analyses of bone density and longitudinal observations. The paradox arises because AI identifies subclinical radiographic …

Journal of Dental Sciences
Background/purpose: Although periodontal disease is associated with an increased risk of hypertension, the endothelial mechanisms linking oral inflammation to vascular dysfunction remain unclear. We investigated whether Porphyromonas gingivalis lipopolysaccharide (Pg-LPS) can directly disturb endothelial homeostasis and whether macrophage–endothelial crosstalk further worsens endothelial injury.
Materials and methods: Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were exposed to Pg-LPS alone or co-cultured (transwell system) with Pg-LPS-primed human monocytic cells -derived macrophages. Endothelial dysfunction was assessed through nitric oxide (NO) production, endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) phosphorylation, inflammatory and adhesion molecule expression, as well as junctional and cytoskeletal changes. Macrophage …

Journal of Dental Sciences
Background/purpose: Isoliquiritigenin (ISL) has shown anti-fibrotic potential in several organ systems, but its effects on oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) remain unclear. This study investigated whether ISL attenuates myofibroblast activities in buccal mucosal fibroblasts (BMFs) from OSF patients by modulating TGF-β/Smad2 signaling and the long non-coding RNA NEAT1.
Materials and methods: Primary normal BMFs and fibrotic BMFs (fBMFs) were isolated from human buccal mucosa, and cell viability, collagen gel contraction, migration, and wound closure were examined after ISL treatment with or without arecoline. TGF-β1 secretion was quantified, while protein expression of phosphorylated Smad2, COL1A1, and α-SMA was analyzed, and …
