Colonial Whaling In Walvis Bay And In Southern Africa: Environmental Exploitation And Legacy Of South Africa’S Cetaceans, Jake L. Zarak Jan 2026

Colonial Whaling In Walvis Bay And In Southern Africa: Environmental Exploitation And Legacy Of South Africa’S Cetaceans, Jake L. Zarak

Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal

This paper examines the colonial whaling industry in Southern Africa, with a focus on Walvis Bay, tracing its long term environmental and socio-economic impacts. From the 1700s to the 1900s, whaling operations, primarily led by American, British, and French enterprises, exploited the region’s rich populations of sperm and right whales, drastically reducing their numbers. The study contextualizes whaling within a broader colonial framework, analyzing its effects on whale migratory patterns, indigenous communities, and marine ecosystems. It explores as well, the transition from whaling as an economic endeavor to modern conservation efforts and the romanticization of whales in literature and art. …

Western Mansions In The Gardens Of Perfect Brightness, Another History Of High Qing Sino-European Exchanges, Nicolas Woreth

Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal

The Gardens of Perfect Brightness, the favorite residence of Chinese Emperors in the High Qing era (1683-1799), held mysteries that will remain forever concealed from the public eye after French and British imperialist forces looted it and burned it beyond repair during the Second Opium War (1856-1860). Behind the doors of the secret garden, scarcely open to anyone but the emperor, his wives, and servants, worked European artists and scientists. Most of them were Jesuit missionaries who served the emperor in the hope of gaining his favor and support for the spread of Christianity in China.

This paper aims to …

Deep-Rooted Images: Situating (Extra) Institutional Appropriations Of Deepfakes In The Us And India, Kailyn Slater, Akriti Rastogi Jan 2026

Deep-Rooted Images: Situating (Extra) Institutional Appropriations Of Deepfakes In The Us And India, Kailyn Slater, Akriti Rastogi

Fast Capitalism

The paper aims to map institutional and extra-institutional affordances and appropriations of deepfake images through an analytical framework that accounts for the socio-political contexts of the US and India. Our main argument involves the inevitable leakage of technologies outside institutions and its redressal through corporatized comebacks. Utilizing vernacular and global examples, we trace the perceived ownership and extended modalities of deepfake images and videos. While compositing (Manovich 2006) and habitual media (Chun 2016) predetermine our deep mediatized world (Hepp 2019), deepfakes, as a visual cultural technology newly popular within the political economy of media, offer a novel entry point into …

The Manosphere As An Online Protection Racket: How The Red Pill Monetizes Male Need For Security In Modern Society, Eva Bujalka, Tim Rich, Stuart Bender

Fast Capitalism

To effectively manage, empathize with and respond to the implications and impact of the so-called ‘Manosphere,' this paper is centered on the premise that researchers require an understanding of the draw factors that lead individuals to engage, affiliate with, and contribute to the various groups that constitute this wider movement. This paper seeks to contribute to the growing body of knowledge around the Manosphere by exploring how thought leaders propagate symbiotic cycles of ontological security and insecurity through YouTube in a manner that resembles a protection racket. It argues that these constructed ontological security cycles provide a powerful impetus to …

Vital Environs: Ecologies Of Modernism And The Nature Tradition, Danielle Nasenbeny Jan 2026

Vital Environs: Ecologies Of Modernism And The Nature Tradition, Danielle Nasenbeny

Dissertations

Vital Environs: Ecologies of Modernism and the Nature Tradition is an investigation of late nineteenth and early twentieth century British literature that explores the space between the individual and the external world. The project begins by exploring the “mind-body problem,” which is a topic in philosophy that recognizes the difficulty in understanding how the mind emerges from physical matter. While this topic has been in discussion since at least Descartes, science is still making crucial discoveries that challenge our understanding of this connection. I argue that the environmental crisis we find ourselves in today is a mind-body problem of global …

Mulching And Time Of Planting Impact On Southern Blight Disease And Industrial Hemp Production, Sai Suvidh Maddela, Emmanuel C. Omondi, Margaret T. Mmbaga, Anand Kumar, Mitchell Dale Richmond, Philip O. Hinson, Bharat Pokharel Jan 2026

Mulching And Time Of Planting Impact On Southern Blight Disease And Industrial Hemp Production, Sai Suvidh Maddela, Emmanuel C. Omondi, Margaret T. Mmbaga, Anand Kumar, Mitchell Dale Richmond, Philip O. Hinson, Bharat Pokharel

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Southern blight, a disease caused by the soil-borne fungus Sclerotium rolfsii (S. rolfsii), is favored by the hot and humid conditions of the southeastern United States, posing a significant challenge to hemp production in Tennessee. Black plastic mulch (BPM), commonly used for weed control, can exacerbate the disease. There is limited information on the effects of straw mulch (SM), known to moderate soil temperatures and moisture, or planting time in disease management. Field studies were conducted in 2022 and 2023 at Tennessee State University to evaluate the effects of planting time, mulch type, and biofungicide application on disease severity, weed …

The Comstock Act: Will The First Amendment Finally Bury This Zombie Law’S Speech Restrictions?, Morgan Garces

University of Miami Law Review

The Comstock Act of 1873 is a federal anti-obscenity law that, along with lascivious and filthy literature, explicitly restricts the sending of anything that can be used to procure an abortion—including writing. However, since the decision of Roe v. Wade, the law’s abortion-speech provisions had been considered long-dead—although never officially being overturned. Now that Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization has rescinded the right to an abortion, the law appears to be reaching out from its grave. Anti-abortion activists are currently looking to the Comstock Act as a federal abortion ban already on the books because of its ban …

Temporal Variation Of Benthic Aquatic Macroinvertebrate Communities In Two Upland Intermittent Streams In The Boston Mountains, R. J. Mccollough, K. B. Hecke Jan 2026

Temporal Variation Of Benthic Aquatic Macroinvertebrate Communities In Two Upland Intermittent Streams In The Boston Mountains, R. J. Mccollough, K. B. Hecke

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Benthic aquatic macroinvertebrates are some of the most highly used organisms for biomonitoring and assessing stream health. However, biomonitoring is often done in one season, potentially missing important taxa and inaccurately reflecting the community as well as stream health. In addition, while road crossing effects have also been extensively researched the last few decades, these studies are also often conducted in one season, likely misrepresenting the community structure and the overall effects of the road crossing. The highly known River Continuum Concept (RCC) is often applied to these benthic aquatic macroinvertebrate communities. This study aimed to examine aquatic macroinvertebrate communities …

Sustained Increase In Extracellular Atp In The Lung Induced By Chronic Inhalation Exposure To Nitrogen Dioxide, Nai Ju Chan, Yueh Yin Chen, Chun Chun Hsu, You Shuei Lin, Maxwell Zakeri, Mehdi Khosravi, Lu Yuan Lee

Physiology Faculty Publications

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is an environmental air pollutant and a potent oxidant. Epidemiological studies have revealed a close association between chronic cough and long-term inhalation exposure to NO2. ATP can be released from airway/lung epithelial cells upon inhalation exposure to oxidants, and convincing evidence established in recent clinical studies indicated that extracellular ATP in the respiratory tract plays an important role in the pathogenesis of refractory chronic cough. However, whether inhalation exposure to NO2 elevates the ATP release in the lung is not yet known. Results of this study showed: 1) in awake rats, acute …

Early-Life Exposure To Pfas Affects Adolescent Neuroimmune Activity, Gia Marie Valdez Jan 2026

Early-Life Exposure To Pfas Affects Adolescent Neuroimmune Activity, Gia Marie Valdez

Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University

Per-/polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent organic pollutants commonly used in non-stick, oil-resistant, and water-proof food packaging as well as textiles; they are detected in more than 99% of human serum. Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), one of the most ubiquitous PFAS, is associated with altered lipid metabolism, immunotoxicity, and neurodevelopmental disorders. These outcomes all implicate microglia, resident macrophages in the brain critical for development and sensitive to lipid signaling, as key mediators of toxicity. However, developmental effects of PFOS on microglia are not well-characterized, nor is it clear how PFOS alters microglial inflammatory responses. We hypothesized that early-life PFOS exposure alters …

Faculty Publications

Background/Objectives: Unhealthy lifestyles lead to chronic low-grade inflammation, increasing the risk of colorectal cancer. Few studies in East Asia have examined the association between the dietary inflammation potential and colorectal cancer incidence. Therefore, we aimed to investigate this association further in the Japanese population. Methods: This study included 38,807 men aged 45–74 years who participated in the Japan Public Health Center-based prospective study (JPHC Study). The energy-adjusted dietary inflammatory index (E-DII) was derived from a food frequency questionnaire. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using Cox proportional hazards regression models. Differences in risk due to a …

Aromatase inhibitors are widely used in the treatment of hormone-sensitive breast cancer, but their suppression of estrogen production accelerates bone loss, increases fracture risk, and negatively impacts muscle and fat metabolism. Here, we demonstrate that daily low intensity vibration, serving as a non-drug mimetic for exercise, protects musculoskeletal health in skeletally immature, female mice under complete estrogen deprivation. Subsequent improvements in vertebral bone density are paralleled by greater and leaner skeletal muscle mass and function alongside reduced fat accretion and circulating metabolites. In mature, estrogen deprived mice, vibration enhances weekly bisphosphonate treatment, improving bone density, cortical thickness, and mechanical resistance …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Marine cold-spells are an understudied phenomena which can both negatively impact marine wildlife and provide thermal refugia for species displaced by climate change. To develop forward-looking and climate-ready management schemes, it is critical to examine how marine species respond to cold-spells, how long-term warming will affect marine cold-spells over the next century, and how these future cold-spells will in turn affect species of conservation concern, particularly in marine protected areas. To this end, we detect marine cold-spells across the California Current System, a productive Eastern Boundary Upwelling System, relative to a fixed baseline (1980–2009) and to a detrended time series …

Distress Calls As Social Stressors Affecting Chicken Welfare, Katherine A. Herborn, Benjamin Wilson, Sarah A. Collins, Malcolm A. Mitchell, Alan G. Mcelligott, Lucy Asher Jan 2026

Distress Calls As Social Stressors Affecting Chicken Welfare, Katherine A. Herborn, Benjamin Wilson, Sarah A. Collins, Malcolm A. Mitchell, Alan G. Mcelligott, Lucy Asher

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Social signals about current environmental risks can shape development in young animals. Distress calls made by young chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) may also encode affective state, with high arousal, potentially ‘anxiety-like’ state characterized by continuous calling, and learned helplessness or potentially ‘depression-like’ state by a more intermittent pattern. During early life (age 4–7 days), we played chicks artificial stimuli mimicking these two call patterns. Growth effects suggest caller affective state can modulate this social signal: chicks exposed to bouts of ‘Continuous’ calls grew faster and were heavier by late commercial life (day 43) than Controls. In contrast, chicks exposed to …

Emerging therapies in sickle cell disease (SCD) aim to restore healthy red blood cell (RBC) function, but they often yield heterogeneous cellular responses. There are no proven techniques to evaluate restored rheological functionality and heterogeneity in these RBCs. We present a biomimetic microcapillary network, high-speed imaging, and computational algorithms to analyze RBC capillary velocity profiles of the entire sample population at single-cell resolution. Using peripheral RBCs from SCD patients and healthy donors, we showed that RBC capillary transit velocity correlated with cell shape, hydrodynamic adaptability, and elongation index. Healthy RBCs exhibited a velocity distribution skewed toward higher values, whereas RBCs …
