The Effects Of Endocrine Disruptors On The Female Reproductive System, Riza Gökhan Baykal, Reyhan Ersoy
The Effects Of Endocrine Disruptors On The Female Reproductive System, Riza Gökhan Baykal, Reyhan Ersoy
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are a diverse, comprehensive group of mostly synthetic chemicals that disrupt many physiological functions in humans and animals. EDCs are particularly disruptive to the female reproductive system. Reproductive function in women is a dynamic process regulated by the hypothalamic–pituitary–ovarian axis. EDCs show their effects on the reproductive system through estrogenic, antiestrogenic, androgenic, and antiandrogenic effects or by directly affecting gonadotropin-releasing hormone secretion. Disruption in the menstrual cycle, decrease in fertility, infertility, increased risk of miscarriage, polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis, early or delayed puberty, and hormone-sensitive cancers can be listed as the main negative effects of endocrine disruptors …

Effects Of Endocrine Disruptors On Thyroid Hormone Synthesis And Function And Consequences Of Fetal Exposure, Esra Eraslan Aydemi̇r, Mustafa Şahi̇n
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Fetal development relies on intricate maternal-fetal-placental interactions, with thyroid hormones playing a critical role in growth and neurogenesis. Exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) during pregnancy has emerged as a significant risk factor for thyroid dysfunction and its associated developmental and cognitive disorders. EDCs, including bisphenol A (BPA), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), perfluorinated compounds (PFAS), pesticides, and heavy metals, disrupt thyroid hormone synthesis, secretion, and metabolism. Mechanisms include binding to thyroid hormone receptors, impairing the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis, and altering thyroid peroxidase activity. BPA exposure, for instance, reduces free and total T4 levels and interferes with deiodinase activity. Similarly, …

Her2-Low And Her2-Ultralow Metastatic Breast Cancer And Trastuzumab Deruxtecan: Common Clinical Questions And Answers, Nusayba A Bagegni, Karthik V Giridhar, Daphne Stewart
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Approximately 80% of invasive breast cancers are classified as human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-negative; however, many of these tumors have detectable levels of HER2 surface expression. Trastuzumab deruxtecan (T-DXd) is a HER2-directed antibody-drug conjugate with a membrane-permeable payload that is cytotoxic to both HER2-expressing tumor cells and neighboring cells via the bystander antitumor effect. T-DXd has shown significant antitumor activity in clinical trials for patients with HER2-positive (immunohistochemistry [IHC] 3+ or IHC 2+/in situ hybridization [ISH]+) breast cancer. In addition, the results of the DESTINY-Breast04 trial demonstrated the clinical benefit of T-DXd in patients with HER2-low (IHC 1+ …

Development Of A Multispectral Collagen Detection Dermatology Device For Delineation Of Non-Melanoma Skin Cancers, Anmol Jarang
Development Of A Multispectral Collagen Detection Dermatology Device For Delineation Of Non-Melanoma Skin Cancers, Anmol Jarang
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
To diagnose and manage skin disease, clinicians primarily use visual inspection aided with dermatoscopes, which are cross-polarized magnifiers. In recent years, digital cross polarized multispectral imaging systems have been developed to quantitatively assess skin disease. For example, systems like the one developed by Yaroslavsky et al., which utilize red and blue filters, can non-invasively assess the collagen network in the dermis(Yaroslavsky et al., 2003). Visualization of collagen network disruption can make it easier to visualize the boundaries of skin cancers like keratinocyte carcinoma, and therefore easier to excise completely. Current systems use external bandpass filters in front of cameras to …
Fpga-Accelerated Computational Photon Counting, Chibueze Onyeador
Fpga-Accelerated Computational Photon Counting, Chibueze Onyeador
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy (FLIM) is a powerful tool for biomedical re- search. It leverages fluorescence of biological samples to visualize and characterize biological dynamics and molecular interactions. FLIM utilizes fluorescence lifetime, the average time a molecule stays in its excited state after absorbing a photon, to investigate the dynamics of biological samples.
Ultra-fast and precise (ps-ns) timing fluorescence acquisition techniques suffer from different trade-offs. Some methods suffer from high dead times, decreased accuracy in fluorescence lifetime calculations, and high data volumes and transfers. Finding a new method that can provide the best performance while experiencing low dead times, adequate …

Enhancing Aerosol Scattering Measurements: Performance Evaluation And Quality Assurance Of Airphoton Integrating Nephelometers In The Surface Particulate Matter Network, Kamlendra Singh Pathak
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Integrating nephelometers are key instruments for quantifying aerosol light scattering, a fundamental parameter governing the direct radiative effect of aerosols on climate and visibility, and for interpreting satellite observations of aerosol optical depth. The AirPhoton integrating nephelometer quantifies aerosol light scattering by measuring total scattering from the sample air and subtracting a clean-air reference that represents Rayleigh scattering, instrument wall scattering, and detector background noise. Measurement accuracy depends on rigorous calibration and regular performance evaluation to account for instrumental drift and environmental influences. This study presents a field performance evaluation of the AirPhoton integrating nephelometer within the global Surface Particulate …

University Living Labs For Sustainability: Governance, Pedagogy, And Global North-South Patterns, Skilty C. Labastilla
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
This scoping review examines how 72 higher education institutions (HEIs) operationalize sustainability through living labs (LLs), synthesizing evidence from 89 studies published between 2010 and 2025. Using Arksey and O’Malley’s (2005) framework, the review maps how LLs coordinate governance, pedagogy, operational experimentation, and stakeholder engagement, comparing 63 Global North (GN) and 26 Global South (GS) cases. GN LLs feature formalized governance and resource-intensive infrastructures linking curriculum, operations, and data-driven experimentation. GS LLs operate under resource constraints but exhibit strong community embedding, participatory co-production, and socio-ecological responsiveness. Institutionalization depends on hybrid configurations where bottom-up experimentation aligns with top-down authority. Observed governance, …

Reduced tillage (RT) is a common conservation agriculture practice, generally regarded to be a valuable greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation approach through increasing soil carbon (C) stocks. However, direct GHG measurements from RT compared to conventional tillage (CT) treatments can vary greatly depending on site-specific soil properties and management practices. The objective of this study was to evaluate the short-term effects of RT on soil-to-atmosphere carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes and emissions, global warming potential (GWP), yield, and emissions intensity (EI) throughout the 2024 soybean (Glycine max) growing season in a southeast Arkansas production field. Towards Science-Based Quantitative Conservation Management Plan Add-Ons For All Alaskan Squirrel Species: Current And Future Distributions, Conservation Management, Contaminant Exposure, And Their Role In Alaska Native Communities, Moriz Steiner
Biological Sciences
Squirrels are widespread in Alaska, yet a science-based conservation management plan (CMP) is absent at the state level. Squirrels are killed year-round with no bag limits, while population metrics remain unknown and conservation statuses disputed. This thesis proposes modern tools and approaches as addons for long-term, sustainable, holistic CMPs for all Alaskan squirrel species in a changing climate. Chapter 1 provides an overview of squirrels' current roles and uses in Alaska alongside existing management practices and regulations. Chapters 2 and 3 conduct thorough conservation assessments by analyzing and predicting current and future distributions of squirrel species across Alaska and a …

Osteoprogenitor Cells From Non-Regenerative Bone Show Greater Resistance To Cellular Stress Than Those From Regenerative Bone, Joshua Broussard, Sylvia Culpepper, Tyrel Long, Alexander J. Trostle, Robert J. Tower, Mimi C. Sammarco, Jennifer Simkin
School of Medicine Faculty Publications
INTRODUCTION: Bone regeneration following injury depends on osteoprogenitor cells derived predominantly from the periosteum. Incomplete regeneration has been attributed to both cell-extrinsic factors (e.g., environment, inflammation, mechanical instability) and cell-intrinsic factors (e.g., impaired proliferation or differentiation of stem cells). In the digit amputation mouse model, amputation through the third phalanx (P3) supports complete regeneration, while amputation through the second phalanx (P2) results in callus formation and scarring. Periosteal cells are known to be the major contributing cell source for repair and regeneration. Yet the healing outcomes of P2 and P3 amputations are significantly different. This study tests whether P2 and …

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) are periods of anomalously warm sea temperatures that are becoming increasingly recognised as ocean stressors. Globally, MHWs have impacted marine ecosystems, with significant socioeconomic implications for coastal communities and industries. The unprecedented MHW that occurred in the waters surrounding the UK and Ireland in summer 2023 highlighted a crucial gap in our understanding of the region-specific characteristics of MHWs and their impacts on marine ecosystems, the services they underpin, the blue economy and society. Using diverse expert opinion, we propose 40 priority questions for interdisciplinary research in the UK that must urgently be addressed to prepare for …

Unmasking Oral Health Stigma: A Qualitative Scoping Review, J Doughty, J Booth, M Smith, K Saini, M Paisi, A Rodriguez, A Levine, C Bedos, V Muirhead, C Martins De Barros, C Freeborn
Peninsula Dental School
INTRODUCTION: Health-related stigma can limit access to care, impair adherence to treatment, and negatively impact mental health and quality-of-life. Oral health stigma, defined as stigma arising from oral conditions that diverge from sociocultural norms, operates through labelling, stereotyping, othering, and exclusion. Oral health stigma can lead to shame, diminished self-confidence, and avoidance of dental care, creating a self-perpetuating cycle of poor oral health and reinforcing internalised and anticipated stigma. While previous research has explored the social implications of oral appearance, little is known about the broader concept of oral health stigma or strategies to mitigate it.
METHODS: This scoping review …

Bacterial Chondronecrosis with Osteomyelitis (BCO) lameness is an infection of opportunistic bacteria in the structural skeletal bones impacting multiple animal species, particularly poultry species. BCO lameness results in significant financial losses to industrial poultry production and increases the risk of foodborne illnesses, posing a major threat to consumers' food safety. As BCO lameness is an inherent risk of fast body weight gain in poultry species, especially broiler chickens, abundant studies have been conducted in broilers and turkeys. Nevertheless, BCO lameness incidence in ducks remains elusive. Thus, this is the first survey investigating the prevalence of BCO lameness cases in ducks. …

Gradient biomaterials that exhibit spatially varying physical, chemical, or biological properties can be used in various applications such as tissue engineering, organoid development, mechanobiology, and spatially controlled drug delivery. However, current fabrication methods often suffer from limited gradient precision, restricted material compatibility, and poor reproducibility. Here, we introduced gradient regulation via acoustofluidic dynamic engineering (GRADE), a programmable system to generate high-fidelity gradient biomaterials across different material systems. By incorporating focused interdigital transducers with the pulsed surface acoustic wave actuation, GRADE can achieve tunable and directional acoustic streaming (0 to 22 millimeters per second), which allows accurate regulation of the gradient …

BACKGROUND: Decades of research have identified a strong association between heavy cannabis use and schizophrenia (SCZ), with evidence of correlated genetic factors. However, many studies on the genetic relationship between cannabis use and psychosis have lacked data on both phenotypes within the same individuals, creating challenges due to unmeasured confounding. We aimed to address this by using multimodal data from the All of Us Research Program, which contains genetic data as well as information on SCZ diagnosis and cannabis use.
METHODS: We tested the association between cannabis use disorder (CUD) and SCZ polygenic scores (PGSs) with SCZ and heavy cannabis …

Egypt has a strategic geographical position as a significant destination and transit country for unaccompanied and separated migrant children (UASC). With a substantial and rapidly increasing migrant population, exacerbated by recent regional influxes, the country’s public infrastructure and resources are experiencing considerable strain. While Egypt has demonstrated its commitment to child rights through the ratification of key international instruments like the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACRWC), UASC in the country nonetheless face complex protection challenges, including legal visibility concerns, risk for exploitation, and barriers …

Journal of Graduate Librarianship
In this editorial, we share our best advice for preparing the dossier necessary for professional advancement. While our advice is unavoidably shaped by the specifics of our experiences and universities, we believe most of it is broadly applicable to academic librarians in general. We cluster our advice into three categories: framework and planning, building your portfolio, and ongoing recordkeeping. We hope this “from the ground up” presentation will help those new to academic librarianship, though it’s never too late for more experienced librarians to (re)consider their own approaches.
