Middle Tennessee Rhetoric About Immigration, Rachael Ferguson Dec 2025

Middle Tennessee Rhetoric About Immigration, Rachael Ferguson

Student Scholar Symposium

Nashville is home to a growing and diverse immigrant population, contributing significantly to the city’s cultural, social, and economic landscape. Despite this, immigrants in Nashville often face systemic undervaluation, as reflected in policies prevailing public rhetoric. For example, recent proposals suggest that undocumented students may lose access to public education, even while many immigrant students already face barriers to receiving specialized support due to language differences. These issues are not isolated but part of a broader context of anti-immigrant sentiment, which has far-reaching implications for educational equity and public policy. Words shape beliefs, and beliefs influence actions. The rhetoric used …

Investigating The Efficacy Of Mebendazole On C. Elegans: Implications For Anthelmintic Drug Development, Brooke Brewer, Saja Al-Saweily

Student Scholar Symposium

About 1.5 billion people in the world are infected with soil-transmitted helminths, especially those who live in high poverty areas. These infections affect communities with poor access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene in tropical and subtropical areas, keeping them in a state of poverty. Our research focuses on drugs that target the parasitic worms currently approved by the World Health Organization (WHO). The WHO currently only has 4 approved drugs for Mass Drug Administration, due to low profit margins, complex parasite life cycles, and rising drug resistance (World Health Organization 2023). While Mebendazole is effective against many common parasitic …

Structural Basis Of A Class Ii Ribonucleotide Reductase Found If Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Leah Jacob Dec 2025

Structural Basis Of A Class Ii Ribonucleotide Reductase Found If Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Leah Jacob

Student Scholar Symposium

Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), remains a leading global health challenge, particularly due to its ability to enter a dormant, drug-tolerant state that enables long-term persistence within the host. Just before dormancy, Mtb replicates its entire genome creating DNA precursors for when the infection reactivates. Ribonucleotide reductases (RNRs) play a critical role in bacterial survival by catalyzing the conversion of ribonucleotides into deoxyribonucleotides, a necessary step for DNA replication and repair. The class II RNR, NrdZ, has been implicated in facilitating Mtb persistence under hypoxic stress conditions, yet its structural and mechanistic function remains largely uncharacterized. …

Assessing The Electrical Efficiency Of The Thompson Coil, Christopher Wengert, Dominick Dingus, Madouna Barsoum, Jacqueline Ceballos, Michael Ent, Jackson Stephens

Student Scholar Symposium

The Thompson Coil is a well-known system used in undergraduate electromagnetism courses to demonstrate electromagnetic induction. Traditionally, the system employs a “jumping ring” to visualize induced currents. This project seeks to repurpose this phenomenon for practical energy transfer by replacing the jumping ring with a wire coil, allowing the measurement of the power delivered to an electric load. Using Faraday’s Law of Induction, 𝜖 = −𝑑Φ𝐵 /𝑑𝑡 , where Φ𝐵 represents the magnetic flux, the induced electromotive force (EMF) in the receiving coil is determined. Finally, the system’s power transfer efficiency is evaluated using the formula 𝜂 =𝑃𝑜𝑢𝑡/ 𝑃𝑖𝑛 ×100% …

Swan Lake: Tchaikovsky's Lasting Influence On Ballet, Keely Hudspeth Dec 2025

Swan Lake: Tchaikovsky's Lasting Influence On Ballet, Keely Hudspeth

Student Scholar Symposium

Russian ballet has had a significant influence on this dance form since at least the nineteenth century. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky had an especially pivotal role, writing works that placed increasing emphasis on the artistic importance of music in addition to the choreography. A study of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake exemplifies his new emphasis on music and the evolution of ballet in the late nineteenth century. My research surveys the early history of ballet and provides a brief biography of Tchaikovsky. Most of my work, however, is an analysis of the music (score) and choreography of Swan Lake—demonstrating Tchaikovsky’s emphasis on music …

Every Drop And Every Breath Poem Abstract, Isabella Gautsche Dec 2025

Every Drop And Every Breath Poem Abstract, Isabella Gautsche

Student Scholar Symposium

Every Drop and Every Breath Poem Abstract For the poem, “Every Drop and Every Breath,” I aimed to create an artistic interpretation of the relationship and connection between at least two different body systems within the human body. The approach taken with this goal in mind was a poem describing the crucifixion and sacrifice of Jesus, but through an anatomical lens. To write this piece I researched the crucifixion process and how it affects the body. Then, I connected that with what is described in the Bible and the anatomical processes that would likely be happening, such as sweating blood. …

Sincerely Yours: A Therapeutic Writing Approach To Grief, Raegyn Oliver Dec 2025

Sincerely Yours: A Therapeutic Writing Approach To Grief, Raegyn Oliver

Student Scholar Symposium

Grief is a response to a traumatic event, which can include loss, abandonment, abuse, suicide, or any other experience that affects an individual emotionally or physically. Too few evidence-based interventions acknowledge the unique and individualized experiences of grief (Stroebe, 2017). Writing can help individuals explore the depths of their grief and traumatic experiences (Larsen, 2022). This project explores different writing interventions that have been used for coping strategies. Then, it proposes a therapeutic writing tool that can account for individual differences in grief and describe considerations for its application in clinical and non-clinical settings. The online letter-writing program, “Sincerely Yours,” …

The Influence Of Giovanni Gabrieli On The Music Of Heinrich Schütz, Caleb Taylor Dec 2025

The Influence Of Giovanni Gabrieli On The Music Of Heinrich Schütz, Caleb Taylor

Student Scholar Symposium

Teachers often have a profound influence on their students. The influence of Giovanni Gabrieli on the music of his student Heinrich Schütz is particularly evident: Gabrieli and Schütz’s pieces are so similar that a listener may observe parallels even without the use of scores. The use of specific melodic and rhythmic patterns during cadences and the use of echoing phrases by both composers strongly suggest a musical link between them. There is currently no detailed theoretical analysis comparing specific elements found in the music of both Schutz and Gabrieli. My research aims to remedy this gap in knowledge by examining …

Her2 Amplification In Breast Cancer And Its Treatment Options, Emerald Cole, Zoe Grace Brigance Dec 2025

Her2 Amplification In Breast Cancer And Its Treatment Options, Emerald Cole, Zoe Grace Brigance

Student Scholar Symposium

Breast cancer affects approximately 2.3 million women worldwide, causing an estimated 670,000 deaths in 2022. Among its subtypes, 15-20% exhibit overexpression of Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2 (HER2), a tyrosine kinase receptor that drives tumor aggressiveness. HER2 activates the PI3K and RAS/RAF/MAPK pathways, promoting uncontrolled cell growth, proliferation, and survival. In HER2+ breast cancer, gene amplification leads to excess HER2 protein production, resulting in persistent signaling and unchecked tumor progression. However, this dependency on HER2 presents a key therapeutic opportunity. Trastuzumab, an anti-HER2 monoclonal antibody, inhibits HER2 signaling and enhances immune-mediated cancer cell destruction. When combined with Lapatinib, chemotherapy, …

From Cathedral To Concert Hall: The Evolution Of The Requiem Mass, Thomas Butler

Student Scholar Symposium

Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine – Grant them eternal rest, Lord. These five words make up one of the most well-known texts in the classical music canon: the Requiem Mass. Built on foundations laid by church composers such as Machaut, Dufay, and Palestrina, eighteenth and nineteenth century giants like Mozart, Berlioz, Verdi, and Brahms popularized the Requiem setting as a concert work. The twentieth and twenty-first centuries have seen compositions by Benjamin Britten, Gabriela Frank, and others, which include narrative elements in conjunction with the traditional Latin texts. My research on this topic explores how and why the Requiem Mass …

Unmasking Metals: Icp-Oes Detection Of Toxins In Costume Jewelry, Bailee Kirk, Sierra Beck, Jesse Lampley

Student Scholar Symposium

The presence of toxic trace metals in costume jewelry poses potential health risks and raises environmental concerns. Many inexpensive jewelry items contain harmful elements such as lead, cadmium, nickel, and arsenic, which can cause skin irritation, allergic reactions, and systemic toxicity through prolonged exposure. Regulatory guidelines exist to limit these metals in consumer products, but compliance varies, necessitating continued monitoring. This study utilizes Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) to detect and quantify trace metals in costume jewelry. ICP-OES offers high sensitivity and multi-element analysis capabilities, making it an effective tool for evaluating the composition of complex materials. Jewelry …

Esperanto: A Universal Or Minority Language, Anna Summerville Dec 2025

Esperanto: A Universal Or Minority Language, Anna Summerville

Student Scholar Symposium

When created languages develop a community and culture, they begin to imitate the elements of natural languages. Esperanto, a language created to unite the world under one lingua franca, demonstrates this process as it shifts from its original intention to a minority language in characteristic. “Esperanto: A Universal or Minority Language” explores the dichotomy between a language created to be spoken by all, and one that has isolated itself within its own community and customs. In discussing the history of Esperanto’s creation and structure, its evolving and loyal community, and its parallels with natural minority languages like Maori, this essay …

Weaving through her grief and regret in an introspective first person perspective, the story explores themes of change and holding onto the past, using a statue of a dancer in her family room as a foil between its preserved state and her deteriorating form. Overall, “Why the Dancer Laughs” aims to answer the question: How do we find the …

I Know That Song! Ten Centuries Of Songwriting, Hannah Grace Kerr Dec 2025

I Know That Song! Ten Centuries Of Songwriting, Hannah Grace Kerr

Student Scholar Symposium

While commercially released songs today sound very different from those of the Middle Ages, the 1500s, the 1800s, or even the 20th century, popular and traditional songs do have common traits across time. My research explores common elements that have been used by songwriters for centuries—recurring text themes and durable melodic and lyric forms based on repetition and contrast. I will use audio, score, and text examples to demonstrate close similarities among selected songs that at first may appear very different.

A Small Red Flame: Negative Theology And Divine Presence In Brideshead Revisited, Camille Floyd Dec 2025

A Small Red Flame: Negative Theology And Divine Presence In Brideshead Revisited, Camille Floyd

Student Scholar Symposium

In Evelyn Waugh’s novel Brideshead Revisited, Captain Charles Ryder slowly and unassumingly converts from atheism to Catholicism. Waugh subverts the stereotypical conversion narrative, which defines systematic theology strictly defines as a person’s “turn” or “move towards” God. Negative theology, also known as apophatic theology, is an approach that relies on negation to describe divine nature. Looking at Brideshead Revisited through the lens of negative theology notices a subversion of the conversion narrative to see how God works invisibly, overtime, and in ways not translatable to the human vocabulary. Through memory, Charles Ryder’s experience transforms. He glimpses divine presence at work …

Investigating The Use Of Indole Compounds As Potential Therapeutics For The Treatment Of Necrotizing Enterocolitis, Arlo Colvard, Kyle Brawner Dec 2025

Investigating The Use Of Indole Compounds As Potential Therapeutics For The Treatment Of Necrotizing Enterocolitis, Arlo Colvard, Kyle Brawner

Student Scholar Symposium

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a gastrointestinal inflammatory disease that primarily affects premature infants. In NEC, bacterial factors are thought to elicit an excessive immune system response. This robust inflammatory response leads to excessive apoptosis of the epithelial cells comprising the barrier between the lumen of the gastrointestinal tract and the underlying tissue allowing for bacterial invasion of the underlying tissue, leading to ischemia, necrosis, and potentially sepsis and death. Activation of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), an immune system modulator, has been shown to be preventative against the pathogenesis of NEC in a murine model. However, no research has been conducted …

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is an interstitial lung disease (ILD) characterized by excessive extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition. The prognosis of IPF is poor, with the only curative option for the disease being lung transplantation. Prior studies have described increased expression of the lncRNA Meg3 in the lungs of IPF patients. Increased expression of Meg3 is associated with impaired lung repair through inhibition of lung basal progenitor cell differentiation. In this study, the lung alveolar epithelium was investigated in murine models of IPF and organoid culture. Lineage tracing and immunofluorescence confocal microscopy techniques were employed to identify the cell fate of …
