Fast-Sparse-Spanner: A Practical Algorithm For Constructing Low-Stretch Sparse Geometric Graphs, Fnu Shariful
Fast-Sparse-Spanner: A Practical Algorithm For Constructing Low-Stretch Sparse Geometric Graphs, Fnu Shariful
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
When constructing geometric graphs (vertices are points and edges are line segments connecting point pairs) on pointsets, stretch-factor (worst-case detour between any point pair) is often considered a quality metric. A low stretch-factor (a quantity that is usually > 1) guarantees short paths between all vertex pairs. A geometric graph having a stretch-factor of t is known as a t-spanner. Creating low stretch-factor geometric graphs for large pointsets with a low number of edges is an open problem in computational geometry.
In this work, we have designed and engineered a new simple and practical (fast and memory-efficient) algorithm named Fast-Sparse-Spanner algorithm …

To accommodate increasing cargo volumes and remain competitive, ports worldwide are facing growing pressure to expand and modernize their facilities. However, these expansions can place additional strain on land transportation networks, leading to congestion, delays and operational inefficiencies. This study used VISSIM, a microscopic traffic simulation tool, to model and analyze the complex traffic dynamics at the Blount Island Marine Terminal in Jacksonville, Florida, which is currently undergoing expansion.
To account for future traffic conditions, time series analysis was employed to project growth in traffic demand, taking into consideration anticipated expansions in tenant yard facilities, as well as increases in …
Teachers' Use Of Food Rewards In The Classroom Environment, Mckenna Fiore
Teachers' Use Of Food Rewards In The Classroom Environment, Mckenna Fiore
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Food rewards are defined in terms of the value of a food to the individual at the time of ingestion. In classrooms, teachers may use food rewards to encourage academic achievement and appropriate classroom behavior (Hoffman et al., 2009). The use of unhealthy food rewards increases children’s desires for sweets and nonnutritive foods, which can pose risks for health and obesity-related outcomes, compared to healthier alternatives. Different characteristics, such as teaching style, classroom structure, teaching efficacy and teaching eating behavior, can be related to teacher’s use of different types of rewards. The goal of this study was to investigate the …
Severe Aggression Among Zoo-Housed Coconut (Trichoglossus Haematodus) And Rainbow (Trichoglossus Moluccanus) Lorikeets: Wellbeing Considerations For Free-Flight Aviaries, Emily Simkins
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As conservation and education institutions, modern zoos balance the needs of animals with the interests of visitors through several strategies which can increase animal wellbeing and improve visitor experience. Environmental enrichment is frequently employed to increase the suitability of anthropogenic environments for zoo-housed animals, such as through walkthrough habitats and free-flight aviaries. While habitats such as these are important for visitor experience and can be enriching to animals, there are also wellbeing considerations for these spaces. Walkthrough habitats can be a potential source of fear and stress for animals, as shown by increased frequencies of vigilance, undesirable behavior, and aggression. …
Investigating The Roles Of Intrinsic Point Defects And Transition Metal Doping In Monolayer And Bulk Tis2, Patrick J. Keeney
Investigating The Roles Of Intrinsic Point Defects And Transition Metal Doping In Monolayer And Bulk Tis2, Patrick J. Keeney
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Within this thesis, the magnetic and electronic properties of various 1T-TiS2 systems are thoroughly examined using density functional theory (DFT) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Formation energies and electronic implications of intrinsic point defects in bulk TiS2 and monolayer TiS2 are analyzed by approximating a computational monolayer of TiS2 as the surface layer of a bulk sample. This approximation is validated given that intralayer covalent bonding dominates interlayer van der Waals interactions. We conclude that the most energetically favorable intrinsic defects are Ti atoms settling above the outermost S plane and S vacancies. In addition, the …

Antisocial Behavior Among Students In Florida School Districts And Their Associated Disciplinary Approaches: A Cross-Lagged Panel Design, Kaylee A. Salt
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Research suggests that antisocial behavior is a major problem for all those involved in school environments. Additionally, despite the prevalence of using harsher punishments in response to such behavior, these practices may present more negative rather than positive consequences. The aim of the current study was to explore antisocial behavior in schools and the disciplinary approaches used in response to such behavior. Using disciplinary data reported for public schools in 67 districts of the state of Florida, the prevalence of antisocial behavior incidents was compared to the prevalence of other, drug-related incidents. A cross-lagged panel model determined whether a preference …

Superconducting thin film devices such as Josephson junctions are a staple of cutting-edge quantum and classical computing architectures. Functional devices require optimized materials with properties suited to the device application; properties like superconducting critical temperature, critical current density, resistivity, and surface roughness are important depending on the intended device application. Niobium titanium nitride (NbTiN), a fcc transition metal nitride, is a promising material for these applications, with a superconducting critical temperature among the highest of the superconductors described by Bardeen, Cooper, and Schreiffer (BCS) theory. NbTiN has excellent mechanical and electrical characteristics and is easily deposited via reactive magnetron sputtering …
Frustrated Quantum Magnetism: The Interplay Of Isotropic And Anisotropic Interactions With Application To Α-Rucl3, Evan M. Wilson
Frustrated Quantum Magnetism: The Interplay Of Isotropic And Anisotropic Interactions With Application To Α-Rucl3, Evan M. Wilson
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
We investigate how anisotropic spin interactions, including Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya and Kitaev terms, manifest across quantum spin systems ranging from a single S = 1/2 dimer to molecular spin clusters and layered magnetic materials. Beginning with an exact analysis of the spin dimer, we demonstrate how singlet–triplet mixing induced by Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction directly influences both thermodynamic observables and inelastic neutron scattering spectra. These microscopic fingerprints are then extended to trimer, tetramer, and tetrahedron geometries, where field-induced phase transitions and heat capacity anomalies reveal the interplay between isotropic Heisenberg and anisotropic Kitaev exchanges. In the frustrated zigzag honeycomb lattice, we show that a …
Polynomial Invariants For Classical Invariant Groups, John Diller
Polynomial Invariants For Classical Invariant Groups, John Diller
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The classical invariant theory of matrix groups plays a fundamental role in modern algebra and geometry, with origins in Hilbert’s Fourteenth Problem concerning the finite generation of rings of invariants. In this thesis, we study polynomial functions on spaces of matrices and investigate their invariants under natural actions of classical groups. After recalling the geometric and algebraic motivations behind Hilbert’s question, we focus on invariants for several complex Lie groups, including the general linear group GL(V), the symplectic group Sp(V), the orthogonal group O(V), and the special orthogonal group SO(V). Building on foundational work of Hermann Weyl and a modern …

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) can happen to anyone and is considered a common occurrence in the United States (U.S. Department of Justice, 2025). Social media platforms have allowed individuals to post about their IPV experiences, but such posts can be met with negative comments that are not beneficial to the survivor. This study explores how social media posts regarding IPV affect an individuals’ mental and physical health through a quasi-experimental design. Three out of the four groups of participants were exposed to a mock Instagram post that included the same caption and photo for a supportive, unsupportive, and neutral condition. …
Facilitating Student Engagement In Elementary Science Classrooms With Reformed Teaching Principles, Nathaniel Bryant
Facilitating Student Engagement In Elementary Science Classrooms With Reformed Teaching Principles, Nathaniel Bryant
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Science performance among elementary school students in the United States has stagnated in recent years. To address this issue, the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) were introduced, advocating for a reform in science education. Traditionally, hands-on laboratory work has been used to help students understand scientific concepts through a "learn by doing" approach. However, students often become disengaged during practical work, as following a set procedure to replicate scientific phenomena does not reflect how scientists approach problems in their daily practice. It is now argued that hands-on laboratories should not only involve observation or manipulation of materials and equipment but …
Socioeconomic Status And Educational Opportunities Through The Eyes Of Students And Teachers: Diverse Realities, Shared Insights, Jill Schany
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Sowl and Crain (2021) argue that despite recognizing the uniqueness of the place when it comes to rural demographics and needs, policies regarding education and the economy often prioritize urban areas, defining rural in opposition to urban without adequately addressing the specific needs of rural youth. Studies examining geographical disparities in educational outcomes traditionally concentrated on achievement gaps within urban and suburban areas, highlighting more startling gaps in cities with heightened racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic inequality and segregation. Literature also extensively discusses neighborhood effects on educational outcomes in densely populated regions, offering valuable insights into the distribution of educational opportunities …

The interactions between magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) and bio-surfaces have impacted key industries such as food, biomedicine, water purification, and agriculture. Bacteria, with their diverse bio-surfaces, offer potential for such interactions. Yet, there is a paucity of research interpreting the dynamics behind bacteria–nanoparticle interactions. Advancing this knowledge could improve the industrial applications. Current research gaps include information about the magnetic nanoparticle-assisted concentration dependence of Bacillus cereus and determination of the rate of bacterial extraction by MNPs such as iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs). Using magnetic IONPs as the choice of MNP, this study aimed to investigate in vitro the interactions between model …
