Examining The Variability In Planetary Boundary Layer Height Over Thailand: Correlations With Enso And Aerosol Optical Depth, Sirapong Sooktawee, Khwanruthai Renuhom, Siriwan Kaewket, Aduldech Patpai, Pramet Kaewmesri, Thongchai Kanabkaew, Pichnaree Lalitaporn

Applied Environmental Research

Thailand has been facing air pollution, e.g., PM2.5, and impacts from climate phenomena, e.g., the El Niño‒Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Both air pollution and climate interact with each other. Changes in the planetary boundary layer height (PBLH) can affect PM2.5, represented by the aerosol optical depth (AOD), and are influenced by ENSO related to changes in the PBLH. The relationships among the PBLH, ENSO, and AOD were investigated via an empirical orthogonal function (EOF), which decomposes the spatiotemporal data of the PBLH into spatial patterns and corresponding time series. Correlation analysis was used to determine the relationships between the PBL variability …

Do Courts Get It Right When Piercing The Corporate Veil? An Empirical Study, Franklin A. Gevurtz

McGeorge School of Law Scholarly Articles

This Article presents the results of a unique empirical study addressing whether courts achieve rational outcomes when piercing the corporate veil. The study examined a set of over 300 court decisions upholding piercing claims in the last almost four years. It asked whether the courts in these cases could rationally have found either deception of the creditors or improper removal of corporate assets (siphoning)—two grounds generally agreed to justify imposing liability upon the shareholders. The result was an affirmative answer in around three-quarters of the cases. This result provides an important response to the argument that piercing decisions are irrational …

Evaluation Of The Maneuverability Of An 85m Fishing Trawler (Focusing On Dynamic Stability), Chun-Ki Lee, Su-Hyung Kim

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Most fishing vessels are less than 100 meters in length, so IMO maneuverability standards do not apply. As a result, studies on the maneuverability of fishing vessels are considerably fewer compared to those on merchant ships. However, with technological advancements, the size of fishing vessels continues to grow, and as more fishermen are on board, accidents could lead to fatal casualties. In response, the authors determined that research on the maneuverability of fishing vessels is urgently needed. Thus, the authors conducted a maneuverability evaluation on a fisheries training vessel with the hull shape of a fishing trawler, 85 meters in …

A Hybrid Image Filtering Approach For Improving Edge Detection Of Riverbed Particles With Complex Textures, Po-Wei Lin, Hsun-Chuan Chan

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The distribution of particle size in gravel-bed rivers affects the flow condition, sediment transport, and river morphology. However, conventional particle size analysis is laborious and time-consuming. To enhance the efficiency of particle size analysis, image-based methods have been widely explored, but complex particle textures increase the difficulty in identifying particle edges during image analysis. This study develops a filtering approach based on the rolling guidance filter and leverages the differences in grayscale gradients between particle edges and textures to design a guidance image tailored for the rolling guidance filter. This design enables the filter to preserve particle edges while smoothing …

Using Secreted Biomarkers In The Development Of The Detection Of Advanced Cancer Screening System, Elaine Vanterpool

Student Posters

An estimated 20 million people globally develop cancer every year. Furthermore, over 9.7 million people die from cancer. The best prognosis of cancer occurs when detected early. Cancer, in its early stages, usually does not display clinical symptoms and is usually not detectable by symptoms and is diagnosed later. The goal of the D.A.C.S. is to provide a screen that can detect cancer. It is hypothesized that developing a cancer detection system/technology, named D.A.C.S. (Detection of Advanced Cancer Screening) system, can help with early cancer detection, while still being affordable for the general public.

Mutation In Rpl10 Disrupts Ribosomal Function And Contributes To Autism Spectrum Disorder, Elaine Vanterpool, Paula Ramirez-Mejia

Student Posters

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by difficulties in social communication and restricted, repetitive behaviors, interests, or activities. A study in 2020 estimated that ASD affects 2.8% of children in the United States (NIMH). The RPL10 gene, encodes the Ribosomal protein L10, has been implicated in ASD and plays a crucial role in protein synthesis and neuronal development, contributing to a protein essential for assembling the large ribosomal subunit. This study investigates how variations in PRL10 (Ribosomal Protein L10) can contribute to ASD.

Eed Gene Variants And Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A Genetic Approach To Understanding Ibs, Elaine Vanterpool, Ted Howard

Student Posters

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a disease linked with the gastrointestinal system and seen to cause bloating, abdominal pain, and harmful alterations in the digestive system. Its cause is complex and is known to have both environmental and genetic factors. Recent studies have shown that IBS occurs due to genetic variations, which leads to the pathogenesis of IBS. One gene, the EED (Embryonic Ectoderm Development) gene has been involved in various biological processes, particularly gastrointestinal functions. The purpose of this study is to explore the potential relationship between the EED gene and IBS.

Analyzing The Inhibition Of Chemical Compounds On Collagenase In P. Aeruginosa, Elaine Vanterpool, Marielle Cooper, Kiara Cameron Jan 2025

Analyzing The Inhibition Of Chemical Compounds On Collagenase In P. Aeruginosa, Elaine Vanterpool, Marielle Cooper, Kiara Cameron

Student Posters

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen that poses significant challenges in clinical treatment due to its production of collagenase. This bacterium can cause several infections including pneumonia, meningitis, septicemia, and a host of other diseases. Collagenase acts as a key virulence factor by breaking down collagen in the host’s extracellular matrix, allowing bacteria to invade tissues. This study hypothesized that the effects of cell secreted collagenase would be inhibited by metronidazole, vanillin, and silver nanoparticles to reduce the pathogenicity of Ps. aeruginosa related infections.

Analysis Of Cys294arg Mutation In Cs1 Associated With Periodontal Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome & Collagen Degradation, Elaine Vanterpool, Amy Aboki

Student Posters

C1s enzyme plays a crucial role in the immune system so that the body can fight infection and repair damaged tissues. However, if it is not working properly, it will do more harm than good. This is shown in the case of periodontal Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (pEDS), a rare genetic disorder whereby C1s breaks down collagen I, a protein that gives structure and strength to connective tissues. Severe gum disease, loose teeth and premature teeth is a result of this. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze the pathogenicity of C1s mutations and association in pEDS.

Piglet Nursing Location Along The Sow’S Udder Line Affects Piglet Weight Gain And Subsequent Weaning Weight, Shannon Dierking, Harold J. Monegue, Merlin Lindemann

Animal and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: There is a linear correlation between piglet weaning weight and average daily gain during the post-nursery period. A key factor that influences piglet weight gain during lactation is milk intake. Thus, the variation in piglet weaning weight is hypothesized to be, to some extent, a result of differences in milk production among individual mammary glands. Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of piglet nursing location throughout lactation on piglet weaning weight, with a secondary objective of determining the impact of piglet birth weight on nursing location selection. Methods: Teat pairs were labeled from anterior …
