Stratospheric Variability And Its Relationship To Cold Air Outbreaks In The United States, Paul T. Panhans Jan 2025

Stratospheric Variability And Its Relationship To Cold Air Outbreaks In The United States, Paul T. Panhans

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Only since the early 2000s, has there been a growing body of work linking extreme winter temperature anomalies to the variability of the Northern Hemisphere stratospheric polar vortex (SPV). However, the understanding behind stratosphere-troposphere coupling and cold air outbreaks (CAOs) remain occasionally contradictory in the literature, making it difficult to properly articulate societal risks. Studies often focused on broad stratospheric influences, but this research directly compared stratospheric variability according to their respective tropospheric impacts. This dissertation filled a knowledge gap, as there has yet to be a comprehensive analysis to quantify the differences in stratospheric variability with and without CAOs …

Multimorbidity In Adolescents: The Longitudinal Impact Of Childhood Socioeconomic Trajectories And Health Risk In Adulthood, Savitha Sambandamoorthy Jan 2025

Multimorbidity In Adolescents: The Longitudinal Impact Of Childhood Socioeconomic Trajectories And Health Risk In Adulthood, Savitha Sambandamoorthy

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Abstract

Background:

Multimorbidity, defined as the co-occurrence of two or more health conditions (physical, mental, or both), has been thought of as a disease of the elderly, with most studies of multimorbidity focusing on adults and the elderly population. However, co-occurring (multimorbid) health conditions are common in adolescence, and it is important to understand the profiles and patterns of multimorbidity during adolescence, a critical developmental period with long-term implications. Social determinants of health, especially lower socioeconomic status (SES), are linked to higher risk of multimorbidity and poor outcomes in adulthood. However, most of the past studies that have looked at …

Novel Silicon Anodes For Improved Lithium Ion Battery, Amir Hegazy Jan 2025

Novel Silicon Anodes For Improved Lithium Ion Battery, Amir Hegazy

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Li-ion battery (LIB) have been dominating the development of electronics shaping our daily life owing to their good specific and volumetric energy densities. However, the technological advancement calls for higher energy, safer, lower cost, and large-scale manufacturing batteries.

Silicon is considered an excellent candidate for anode material for higher energy LIB. This thesis examines the potential of silicon as an anode in high-capacity LIBs where the role of silicon is studied at the frontside (FS) and the backside (BS) of the anode. At the frontside, the effect of deposition of silicon on graphite on the battery performance was studied. Graphite …

Can Deliberate Practice For Inner Skills Enhance Therapist Trainees’ Mindfulness And Presence When Working With Clients?, Edmund W. Orlowski Iii Jan 2025

Can Deliberate Practice For Inner Skills Enhance Therapist Trainees’ Mindfulness And Presence When Working With Clients?, Edmund W. Orlowski Iii

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

A replicated single-case design was used to assess the effectiveness of therapist trainees’ engagement in deliberate practice for inner psychotherapy skills (Rousmaniere, 2019). Deliberate practice (DP) is a structured approach to therapist skill development that involves repeatedly observing and responding to real or simulated clients (Rousmaniere, 2016). It was reasoned that by attending to their inner experience while repeatedly being exposed to challenging clinical material (e.g., a client’s suicidal ideation) outside of therapy, trainees may reduce their experiential avoidance and thus be more mindful and present in sessions with actual clients.

During the five-week baseline phase of the study, four …

The Multifaceted Role Of Glutamate At Excitatory And Inhibitory Synapses, Maurice A. Petroccione Jan 2025

The Multifaceted Role Of Glutamate At Excitatory And Inhibitory Synapses, Maurice A. Petroccione

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Our thoughts, memories, and actions are finely controlled by the coordinated activity of neural circuits in the brain. Prior work has identified a multitude of molecular mechanisms that contribute to the generation of these higher order functions, yet we know very little about how our ability to learn and perform habitual actions change depending on how far neurotransmitters released from neurons can travel away from their point of release. This is the main focus of my work, which I carried out using a diverse toolbox and focusing on two brain regions: the hippocampus and the striatum. The hippocampus controls learning …

Contactin2(Cntn2)Creert2 Mouse Line, A New Genetic Tool For Temporal Control To Trace The Developing Neurons In The Nose, Alexis M. Semon

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Neuronal migration is a vital process in embryonic development. In rodents, the very first neurons that originate from the olfactory placode migrate toward the developing brain as part of the migratory mass. This migratory mass includes Gonadotropin-releasing hormone-1 (GnRH-1) neurons, pioneer/terminal nerve (TN) neurons, and olfactory ensheathing cells—a type of glial cell.

Contactin-2 (Cntn2), also referred to as transiently expressed axonal surface glycoprotein-1 (TAG-1), belongs to the contactin family of proteins, which is part of the immunoglobulin superfamily of cell adhesion molecules. Cntn2 has been extensively utilized as a transient/stage-specific molecular marker for various neuronal populations, including commissural neurons of …

The Invisible Costs Of Privatizing Welfare: Administrative Burdens In Contracted Medicaid, Soyun Jeong Jan 2025

The Invisible Costs Of Privatizing Welfare: Administrative Burdens In Contracted Medicaid, Soyun Jeong

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Why do governments favor contracting out social services? Do private actors guarantee a better service experience for citizens? How should we understand the trade-off between efficiency and high-quality service delivery? These are the central questions that motivate this dissertation. Focusing on Medicaid, one of the largest social safety net programs in the United States, this dissertation investigates the impact of outsourcing Medicaid delivery to private health insurance companies. It explores how this privatized structure generates administrative burdens and shapes policy feedback effects. Theoretically, this project seeks to bridge the administrative burden and policy feedback literature by examining how burdensome policy …

Investigating Post-Adoption Abandonment Of Mental Health Mobile Applications Among Young Adults, Donald Harris Jan 2025

Investigating Post-Adoption Abandonment Of Mental Health Mobile Applications Among Young Adults, Donald Harris

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

The rising prevalence of mental health issues among young adults has driven increased interest in Mental Health Mobile Applications (MHMAs), which offer accessible and cost-effective solutions to traditional barriers such as financial limitations, stigma, and restricted healthcare access. Despite their promise, MHMAs frequently experience high rates of attrition and abandonment, significantly limiting their long-term effectiveness. Employing a mixed-methods, multi-stage research design, this dissertation explores the determinants of MHMA abandonment among young adults, emphasizing the interplay between technological inhibitors and enablers, individual user characteristics, and the mediating roles of user satisfaction and perceived usefulness.

Study 1 utilized quantitative text analysis, including …

Jedi Mind: Student And Teacher Perceptions Of Justice, Equity, Diversity, And Inclusion, Jessica W Coles Gray

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

This study uses the Panorama Equity and Inclusion Survey as a measurement tool to examine the perceptions of equity and inclusion among teachers and students in a K-12 educational setting. Grounded in critical race theory, this research employs a QUANT-CRIT mixed methods approach to illuminate systemic inequities and amplify the voices of historically marginalized groups. A review of the existing literature reveals persistent disparities in educational experiences and outcomes for students and teachers of color, underscoring the need for a dual focus on both quantitative patterns and qualitative narratives. The study addressed two primary research questions: (1) What are teachers’ …

Investigating Rna Dysfunction Of Inherited Neuromuscular And Neurodevelopmental Disease, Jacob H. Schroader Jan 2025

Investigating Rna Dysfunction Of Inherited Neuromuscular And Neurodevelopmental Disease, Jacob H. Schroader

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

ITPase deficiency is a rare but fatal, autosomal recessive enzyme deficiency involving encephalopathy, microcephaly, congenital cataracts, hypotonia, developmental delay, and dilated cardiomyopathy. Within a decade since the original description of the severe form in humans, there are huge gaps in the field regarding the underlying molecular mechanisms driving pathogenesis resulting from ITPase deficiency. Past studies have focused on characterization of the organism level ITPase-deficient phenotype, but the molecular and cellular characterization remains to be fully described. Due to the biochemical function and established biological role of the ITPase enzyme, investigation into the consequences of inosine accumulation and misincorporation into RNA …

Author-Centered Approaches In Ela Instruction: A Multiple Case Study Of Secondary English Teachers, Jennifer M. Lockhart Mchugh

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Literary authors are often neglected in secondary ELA (English Language Arts) literary instruction. Teachers are unsure how to teach about the author and how much time to spend on establishing the context for the text when the goal is to “cover” a variety of literary texts as part of a planned curriculum during the school year. Acknowledging the role of authors’ intentions as well as their experiences and aesthetic decisions in the production of literature may provide new entry points into literary texts for students. This multiple-case study of secondary English teachers and their high school students in a “bounded …

Does Type Of Metta Phrase Impact The Acceptability And Utility Of Loving-Kindness Interventions: An Experimental Evaluation, Shannon B. Underwood Jan 2025

Does Type Of Metta Phrase Impact The Acceptability And Utility Of Loving-Kindness Interventions: An Experimental Evaluation, Shannon B. Underwood

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Loving-kindness (metta) meditation (LKM) is a widely utilized self-compassion intervention with numerous biopsychosocial benefits. Yet a smaller, emerging body of evidence suggests that LKM is difficult and various barriers impact its accessibility and effectiveness. Relational Frame Theory provides a behavioral and contextual perspective of language and cognition that may help clarify how LKM may yield receptivity or rejection of the practice itself. Prior research examining the role of language in LKM identified specific metta phrases more likely to evoke a coordinated (i.e., sameness/agreement) or oppositional (i.e., rejection/lacking) response, and found that indices of psychological suffering predicted oppositional responding (Underwood, 2023). …

Boundary Conditions, Symmetries, And Bootstrap In 2d Conformal Field Theory, Yucong Cai Jan 2025

Boundary Conditions, Symmetries, And Bootstrap In 2d Conformal Field Theory, Yucong Cai

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

This dissertation contains two parts of study on the Friedan states and on the conformal bootstrap with symmetries.

The Friedan states are potential physical boundary states of the free boson. However, they exhibited a continuous spectrum in the open string sector, in contrast to more standard examples. The explicit expressions for the density of states of the Friedan states is obtained. Some pathologies and possible contradictions of these states are explored. The $g$ functions of the Friedan states are shown to be infinite, suggesting an infinite number of degrees of freedom in the theory.

The modular conformal bootstrap using the …

The Large-Scale Flow Dynamics And Controls On Recurving Eastern North Pacific Tropical Cyclones, Alexander Kyle Mitchell Jan 2025

The Large-Scale Flow Dynamics And Controls On Recurving Eastern North Pacific Tropical Cyclones, Alexander Kyle Mitchell

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

While eastern North Pacific (EPAC) tropical cyclones (TCs) most often move westward over open water, a subset deviates from this typical path, recurving toward higher latitudes or making landfall along the North American coastline. Because such events are relatively rare, they have received less attention, despite their significant contributions to rainfall and wildfire activity across the southwestern United States. This dissertation identifies and characterizes the spatial variability of EPAC TC tracks, analyzes the synoptic environments associated with TC recurvature near the North American coast, presents a detailed case study of two recurving EPAC TCs from late September to early October …

Can Financial Inclusion-Based Interventions For Poverty Alleviation Build Sustainable Livelihoods? Voices From Mutual Solidarity Groups (Muso) In Haiti., Meera R. Bhat Jan 2025

Can Financial Inclusion-Based Interventions For Poverty Alleviation Build Sustainable Livelihoods? Voices From Mutual Solidarity Groups (Muso) In Haiti., Meera R. Bhat

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Scholars, policymakers, changemakers, and social workers have attempted to define, understand, and eradicate poverty. Its endurance raises the prospect that these efforts may be incomplete or faulty. This thesis will probe this concern by examining poverty and poverty alleviation programs through the lens of a holistic intervention-based framework known as the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework (SLF). The first paper introduces the SLF and uses it to undertake a conceptual analysis comparing demand and supply driven poverty alleviation interventions that are based on financial inclusion. Next it uses the SLF as a methodological tool to compare financial inclusion programs, as operationalized by …

Facilitating A Class For All Students - An Extensive Literature Review, Maya Lynn Mcdaniels Jan 2025

Facilitating A Class For All Students - An Extensive Literature Review, Maya Lynn Mcdaniels

Honors Program Theses

Under the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA), every child with a recognized disability is guaranteed a free appropriate public education (FAPE). This means that it is my job as a future elementary school special education teacher to provide FAPE by meeting students’ individual needs, often through an individualized education program (IEP), which includes the provision of specially designed instruction, services, and supports. For example, if an IEP calls for a behavior intervention plan, educators are required to implement proactive supports, such as structure and reinforcement systems or scheduled breaks, to ensure equitable access to learning. As an educator, it is …

Ai-Driven Differentiation And Quantification Of Metal Ions Using Ities Electrochemical Sensors, Muzammil M. N. Ahmed, Parth Ganeriwala, Anthi Savvidou, Nicholas Breen, Siddhartha Bhattacharyya, Pavithra Pathirathna

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Electrochemical sensors, particularly those based on ion transfer at the interface between two immiscible electrolyte solutions (ITIES), offer significant advantages such as high selectivity, ease of fabrication, and cost effectiveness for toxic metal ion detection. However, distinguishing between cyclic voltammograms (CVs) of analytes with closely spaced half-wave potentials, such as Cd2+ and Cu2+, remains a challenge, especially for non-expert users. In this work, we present a novel methodology that integrates advanced artificial intelligence (AI) models with ITIES-based sensing to automate and enhance metal ion detection. Our approach first employed a convolutional neural network to classify CVs as either ideal or …

Characterization Of The Erv41-Erv46 Complex As A Retrograde Receptor For Misfolded Secretory Proteins, John Andrew Fuesler Jan 2025

Characterization Of The Erv41-Erv46 Complex As A Retrograde Receptor For Misfolded Secretory Proteins, John Andrew Fuesler

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

The Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER), the site of secretory protein biosynthesis

provides a favorable environment to promote polypeptide folding, protein

oligomerization and export. Although the ER contains many chaperones and other

factors that assist in protein folding, this process is error prone. Eukaryotes have

evolved protein quality control checkpoints to maintain homeostasis in the secretory

pathway, however these processes are imperfect and may result in proteotoxicity

when toxic levels or aggregates of proteins arise. Mutations in proteins involved in

trafficking in the early secretory pathway are closely associated with disease states.

Therefore, it is of great interest to further understand how …

Biochemical And Molecular Analysis Of Anr-Dependent Microoxic Fitness Factors In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Stacie E. Balsam Jan 2025

Biochemical And Molecular Analysis Of Anr-Dependent Microoxic Fitness Factors In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Stacie E. Balsam

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a prominent opportunistic pathogen that is often found in microoxic environments like sites of infection and colony biofilms. P. aeruginosa can grow at oxygen (O2) at concentrations as little as 3 μM and also grows anaerobically by generating energy using nitrate as an alternate electron acceptor. An important way P. aeruginosa adapts to low O2 is through Anr, a transcription factor that upregulates many genes important for microoxic and anoxic fitness.

Specifically, Anr regulates mhr which encodes a hemerythrin protein (Mhr) that binds O2 with affinities relevant to microoxia and is also necessary for full fitness of …

In this paper, we systematically demonstrate the design and analysis of a new type of ultra-broadband tunable metamaterial perfect absorber (MPA) comprising a top vanadium dioxide (VO2) based patterned resonating patch, a continuous metallic film at the bottom, and an intermediate dielectric substrate having a thickness of only 0.18 at the center working frequency. The simulation results reveal that the absorber achieves a bandwidth of 7.26 THz, ranging from 5.40 THz to 12.66 THz, with more than 90% absorptance and an average absorption of 98.21% under normal incidence of the incoming THz wave. Furthermore, absorptance exceeding 99% is achieved between …

Investigating The Human Face Processing Network: Insights From Acquired Prosopagnosia And Hyperfamiliarity For Faces, Marie-Luise Kieseler Jan 2025

Investigating The Human Face Processing Network: Insights From Acquired Prosopagnosia And Hyperfamiliarity For Faces, Marie-Luise Kieseler

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Human faces provide essential social cues that we interpret rapidly, allowing us to recognize identities, interpret emotions, and gauge familiarity. This thesis explores face processing disruptions in four case studies, each offering new insights into the brain’s face recognition mechanisms.

Chapter one presents Annie, a 28-year-old woman who acquired prosopagnosia (face blindness) following COVID-19. After recovering from the severe symptoms of the infection, Annie experienced significant difficulty in recognizing familiar faces and navigating familiar environments. Testing confirmed her impairment in face recognition but showed her preserved cognitive and basic visual processing abilities. Annie was still able to recognize objects and …

Design And Manufacturing Of Multifunctional Piezoelectric Composites, Huan Zhao Jan 2025

Design And Manufacturing Of Multifunctional Piezoelectric Composites, Huan Zhao

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Piezoelectric materials possess a unique ability to convert mechanical energy into electrical signals and have broad industrial applications. However, monolithic piezoelectric materials such as piezoceramics and piezopolymers often suffer from inherent trade-offs among mechanical strength, elasticity, and durability. Piezoelectric composites, typically consisting of a polymer matrix with ceramic reinforcements, offer a solution by combining the advantages of each constituent. Nevertheless, maintaining stable mechanical performance in high-temperature environments remains a significant challenge as conventional polymer matrices usually experience structural degradation.

In this thesis, a novel piezoelectric composite is developed using a preceramic polymer (PCP) matrix with barium titanate (BTO) inclusions. PCPs …

Freedom Of Expression, Collection Management, And Ethical Decision-Making: Censorship Of The Good, The Bad, The Ugly, And Our Obligations To Preserve A Culture's Story, Caroline L. Osborne

Faculty Publications

Libraries, archives, and museums are cultural memory organizations responsible for preserving and conveying a culture’s story. While they have broad editorial discretion in collection management, they also bear significant responsibility, relying on professionals with the expertise to make complex decisions. Practical constraints—such as space, finances, and biases—necessitate content-based limitations and collection policies. This article examines collection management through legal concepts like pure speech, expressive conduct, and state actor status under the First and Fourteenth Amendments, distinguishing viewpoint discrimination from content-based discrimination. It also explores ethical decisionmaking through the lenses of justice, virtue, and the common good.

Debt, Work, And The State, Kate Sablosky Elengold Jan 2025

Debt, Work, And The State, Kate Sablosky Elengold

Faculty Publications

In every state and the District of Columbia, an individual who owes a debt to the state can lose their license to work. Without the ability to make a living, it is much harder to pay off debt. Although using occupational license restrictions as a debt collection tool appears nonsensical, it has never before been the subject of scholarly debate. This Article thus begins an important conversation about debt, work, and the state.

This Article identifies the pervasive authority that state and local governments have to revoke an individual’s occupational license solely because that person owes a debt to the …

Text, Fairness, And Efficiency: The Case Against The Plausibility Standard For Affirmative Defenses, Jessica Marks, Marcus A. Gadson Jan 2025

Text, Fairness, And Efficiency: The Case Against The Plausibility Standard For Affirmative Defenses, Jessica Marks, Marcus A. Gadson

Faculty Publications

Lower federal courts have struggled to answer the following question without any guidance from the U.S. Supreme Court: Does the Iqbal and Twombly plausibility standard apply to affirmative defenses? In this essay, we explain why the answer is no. We aim to provide practical guidance to the countless judges deciding whether to strike an affirmative defense. First, we argue that Rule 8’s text makes using the plausibility standard to evaluate affirmative defenses improper. Judges should pay especially careful attention to our textual analysis because the Supreme Court has placed great weight on the text’s plain meaning in recent civil procedure …
