This work presents a novel computational system for the automated digitization of image-based data from seals of the ancient Indus Valley Civilization (IVC). The objective of this system’s design is to automatically extract and archive key information from seals or images, including the script and motifs. The system operates as a pipeline comprising three deep learning models integrated with a custom-designed database. Two models form the Ancient Script Recognition network (ASR-net), which digitizes sequences of graphemes from Indus seals, similar to Optical Character Recognition for modern languages. The third model, the Motif Identification network (MI-net), identifies recurring motifs—distinctive symbols or …

The Power Of Subnational Actors In Enforcement Of The Convention On Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution, Wendy Erickson

Minnesota Journal of International Law, Vols. 28:2 onward (2019-present)

The Geneva Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution (CLRTAP) was adopted in 1979 and continues to serve as the preeminent international framework for transboundary air pollution. The international community has used a range of multilateral and bilateral cooperative arrangements to address international movement of harmful pollutants. Each has had to contend with the issue of ensuring compliance among party States. CLRTAP faces challenges in addressing transboundary pollution in non-Western countries despite clear evidence that air pollution is harmful to human health and technological developments that enable more accurate tracking of pollutants. In the absence of a model assigning liability for …

Fabrication Of Functional Microparticles For Biological Analysis, Justin George Jan 2025

Fabrication Of Functional Microparticles For Biological Analysis, Justin George

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

To better advance our knowledge of cellular behavior, development of an organism, and disease mechanisms understanding cellular heterogeneity in the functional proteome is essential. Bulk measurements across a cell population often fail to capture the variations which exist between individual cells, however single cell proteomic technology has increasingly demonstrated the characterization of cellular heterogeneity. A single cell functional proteomics assay needs to be both high-throughput and multiplexed to effectively identify biomarkers and provide a quantitative correlation to better understand the interrelationships within complex protein networks. Janus particles have the ability to be engineered to have good compatibility and stability in …

Transcriptome-Wide Gene Expression Analysis Of Skeletal Muscles Of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Mouse Models And Patients, Olivia N. Ransiear

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked recessive muscle degenerative disease that frequently proves fatal by age 30. It primarily affects adolescent males with symptoms appearing as early as age 6. Patients quickly lose their ability to walk due to muscle weakness and are confined to wheelchairs for the remainder of their lives. DMD is caused by a mutation in the dystrophin gene. Without dystrophin, mechanical stress, injury, or shock takes a drastic toll on muscle tissue and muscle stem cells, rendering them unable to regenerate or be repaired. This results in a rapid loss of muscular strength and muscle …

Concurrent Parasympathetic Synchrony In Romantic Couples Exposed To Childhood Maltreatment Subtypes, Kate L. Senich

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Early responsive caregiving hones children’s physiological systems and subsequently supports social interactions (Feldman, 2007; Porges 2001; Steelman et al, 2002). Conversely, mis-attuned interactions with caregivers, such as exposure to maltreatment subtypes, might hinder social engagement capacities at both behavioral and biological levels (Kim & Cicchetti, 2004; Sheridan & McLaughlin et al., 2014). These early adverse influences endure across development and can affect behavioral and physiological interactions with romantic partners (Mayo et al., 2021; River et al., 2020; Zamir, 2022). Specifically, temporally coordinated patterns of physiological responses between partners (i.e., synchrony) are linked with important relationship behaviors, including conflict behaviors …

Multimorbidity In Adolescents: The Longitudinal Impact Of Childhood Socioeconomic Trajectories And Health Risk In Adulthood, Savitha Sambandamoorthy

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Abstract

Background:

Multimorbidity, defined as the co-occurrence of two or more health conditions (physical, mental, or both), has been thought of as a disease of the elderly, with most studies of multimorbidity focusing on adults and the elderly population. However, co-occurring (multimorbid) health conditions are common in adolescence, and it is important to understand the profiles and patterns of multimorbidity during adolescence, a critical developmental period with long-term implications. Social determinants of health, especially lower socioeconomic status (SES), are linked to higher risk of multimorbidity and poor outcomes in adulthood. However, most of the past studies that have looked at …

Can Deliberate Practice For Inner Skills Enhance Therapist Trainees’ Mindfulness And Presence When Working With Clients?, Edmund W. Orlowski Iii

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

A replicated single-case design was used to assess the effectiveness of therapist trainees’ engagement in deliberate practice for inner psychotherapy skills (Rousmaniere, 2019). Deliberate practice (DP) is a structured approach to therapist skill development that involves repeatedly observing and responding to real or simulated clients (Rousmaniere, 2016). It was reasoned that by attending to their inner experience while repeatedly being exposed to challenging clinical material (e.g., a client’s suicidal ideation) outside of therapy, trainees may reduce their experiential avoidance and thus be more mindful and present in sessions with actual clients.

During the five-week baseline phase of the study, four …

The Multifaceted Role Of Glutamate At Excitatory And Inhibitory Synapses, Maurice A. Petroccione Jan 2025

The Multifaceted Role Of Glutamate At Excitatory And Inhibitory Synapses, Maurice A. Petroccione

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Our thoughts, memories, and actions are finely controlled by the coordinated activity of neural circuits in the brain. Prior work has identified a multitude of molecular mechanisms that contribute to the generation of these higher order functions, yet we know very little about how our ability to learn and perform habitual actions change depending on how far neurotransmitters released from neurons can travel away from their point of release. This is the main focus of my work, which I carried out using a diverse toolbox and focusing on two brain regions: the hippocampus and the striatum. The hippocampus controls learning …
