Understanding Emergency Department Utilization By African Americans For Routine Diabetes Care: Are We Asking The Right Cultural Questions?, Melissa Scollan-Koliopoulos Jan 2025

Understanding Emergency Department Utilization By African Americans For Routine Diabetes Care: Are We Asking The Right Cultural Questions?, Melissa Scollan-Koliopoulos

Nursing Faculty Publications

Introduction: The emergency department is a source of routine care for many African Americans. Afrocentric cultural characteristics may serve as a better proxy than race for understanding preferences for emergency department use over primary care for diabetes management. Methods: A literature review was conducted including key terms related to transitional healthcare, emergency department recidivism, Afrocentric cultural characteristics, racism and health disparities, and diabetes in African Americans. An example of tailoring talking points using Afrocentric cultural characteristics is proposed using Jone’s TRIOS Model, a Afrocentric Self-enhancing and Protective Theory. Results: The literature includes evidence to support a complex explanation for emergency …

This is the sixth article in a new series designed to provide readers with insight into educating nurses about evidence-based decision-making (EBDM). It builds on AJN's award-winning previous series—Evidence-Based Practice, Step by Step and EBP 2.0: Implementing and Sustaining Change (to access both series, go to https://links.lww.com/AJN/A133). This follow-up series on EBDM will address how to teach and facilitate learning about the evidence-based practice (EBP) and quality improvement (QI) processes, and how they impact health care quality. This series is relevant for all nurses interested in EBP and QI, especially DNP faculty and students. The brief case scenario …

Correlations Of Gait Kinematics And Cognitive Skills In Parkinson Disease, Joshua J. Lander, Matthew F. Moran, Hannah Alexanian Jan 2025

Correlations Of Gait Kinematics And Cognitive Skills In Parkinson Disease, Joshua J. Lander, Matthew F. Moran, Hannah Alexanian

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications

Cognitive impairments and gait disturbances are often concurrent in Parkinson disease (PD), but the extent to which specific cognitive deficits relate to gait abnormalities remains unclear, especially in early-stage PD. To address this gap, we conducted an observational correlational study to determine if cognitive performance in distinct domains is associated with gait kinematics in PD. This study included a cohort of 19 individuals with early-stage PD who underwent gait analysis with a three-dimensional marker-less motion capture system (Theia Markerless Inc., Kingston, ON, CA) during three conditions: single-task walking, cognitive dual-task walking, and the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test. Cognitive …

Analyzing Visual Attention In Virtual Crime Scene Investigations Using Eye-Tracking And Vr: Insights For Cognitive Modeling, Wen-Chao Yang, Chih-Hung Shih, Jiajun Jiang, Sergio Pallas Enguita, Chung-Hao Chen

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Understanding human perceptual strategies in high-stakes environments, such as crime scene investigations, is essential for developing cognitive models that reflect expert decision-making. This study presents an immersive experimental framework that utilizes virtual reality (VR) and eye-tracking technologies to capture and analyze visual attention during simulated forensic tasks. A 360° panoramic crime scene, constructed using the Nikon KeyMission 360 camera, was integrated into a VR system with HTC Vive and Tobii Pro eye-tracking components. A total of 46 undergraduate students aged 19 to 24–23, from the National University of Singapore in Singapore and 23 from the Central Police University in Taiwan—participated …

The Scope Of The Prior Art, John R. Thomas Jan 2025

The Scope Of The Prior Art, John R. Thomas

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The courts and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (“USPTO”) assess whether an invention may be patented by comparing it to the state of the art, which the patent community terms the “prior art.” Heavily influenced by Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. and Learned Hand, and more recently expanded by the America Invents Act, the Patent Act features the broadest definition of prior art in U.S. history. No matter how remote, evanescent, or obscure, any activity or publication that occurs one day before the inventor files a patent application—anywhere in the world—may prove patent-defeating.

The government also holds patent proprietors accountable …

Revisiting Patent Linkage, John R. Thomas Jan 2025

Revisiting Patent Linkage, John R. Thomas

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Alfred Engelberg’s article of a quarter-century ago, Special Patent Provisions for Pharmaceuticals: Have They Outlived Their Usefulness?, raised a provocative question that retains currency today. The special provisions that Hatch-Waxman established, and Engelberg addressed, have come to be known as patent linkage. Following the principle of linkage, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cannot approve generic drugs for marketing if they would infringe a patent.

Hatch-Waxman’s complex patent provisions aspire towards multiple salutary purposes, including encouraging the prompt availability of generic drugs, improving public notice of pharmaceutical patents, and accelerating dispute resolution proceedings. Congress also attempted to ameliorate perceived …

Bayesian Networks For Safety-Critical Systems, Joseph Mietkiewicz Jan 2025

Bayesian Networks For Safety-Critical Systems, Joseph Mietkiewicz

Theses

This thesis addresses a operational challenge in modern industrial operations: the increasing complexity of systems and the consequent cognitive burden on operators. As industrial technologies advance, the human-computer interface has become the primary conduit for information flow, playing a pivotal role in operational decision-making. However, the proliferation of data often leads to information overload, potentially compromising rather than enhancing operator performance. This research explores an approach to this pressing issue through the application of Bayesian networks as decision support systems in safety- critical scenarios. Our study employs a multi-faceted approach, combining theoretical modeling with empirical testing. Through collaboration with industry …

Climate Change And Constitutional Overreach, Jonathan H. Adler Jan 2025

Climate Change And Constitutional Overreach, Jonathan H. Adler

Faculty Publications

The failure of the political process to produce meaningful climate mitigation policies has encouraged activists to pursues aggressive and innovative litigation strategies. An increasing number of climate-related lawsuits seek to control greenhouse gas emissions, impose liability on fossil fuel producers, or otherwise force greater action on climate change. In many of these cases, litigants have made aggressive constitutional claims that stretch the bounds of existing constitutional doctrine and threaten to entrench climate policies outside of the traditional political process. This Article critically assesses some of the constitutional arguments made in climate cases, including Massachusetts v. EPA and Juliana v. U.S. …

Crypto And The Fiduciary Investor, Eric D. Chason Jan 2025

Crypto And The Fiduciary Investor, Eric D. Chason

Faculty Publications

Without much aid from MPT [modern portfolio theory], how should courts approach claims of imprudent investment in cryptocurrency? Courts might take this lack of aid as itself relevant. If MPT cannot place cryptocurrency in a portfolio, then perhaps fiduciary investors should refrain from doing so. Taking this approach would, however, overextend the prudent investor rule’s reliance on MPT. While the creators of the prudent investor rule certainly relied on MPT, the prudent investor rule does expressly adopt it. Moreover, courts should be wary of fixing investment practices in place. It would be ironic if the prudent investor rule, which intended …
