Floating Signifiers: Ai, Semiotics, And The Crisis Of Meaning In Music, Kehinde Aruwajoye
Floating Signifiers: Ai, Semiotics, And The Crisis Of Meaning In Music, Kehinde Aruwajoye
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
This thesis examines how AI-generated music disrupts traditional meaning-making processes in musical expression. Through semiotic analysis (Saussure, Peirce) and cultural theory (Hall), I demonstrate how AI produces technically proficient but culturally hollow compositions, what I term "floating signifiers." Case studies reveal AI's inability to replicate the lived experiences that give music its depth, despite accurate stylistic reproductions. The work identifies three fundamental losses: contextual grounding, authentic hybridity, and historical consciousness. I propose ethical frameworks for human-AI collaboration that preserve music's essential humanity while leveraging algorithmic capabilities. Ultimately, this research shifts the debate from technical possibility "Can AI compose?" to cultural …
Motion Planning For A Flexible Modular Raft Robot, Chun-Yi She
Motion Planning For A Flexible Modular Raft Robot, Chun-Yi She
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
This thesis presents a hierarchical motion planning framework for SoftRafts, a modular and deformable aquatic robot capable of performing locomotion and manipulation tasks on water surfaces. SoftRafts consist of soft and rigid components that enable structural reconfiguration, offering adaptability in unstructured aquatic environments.
To address the complexity of planning in high-dimensional, deformable systems, the proposed method uses a bounding-shape abstraction, specifically, enclosing circles and rectangular bounding boxes to simplify motion planning. These enclosures abstract the robot's overall shape, reducing the high-dimensional planning problem into a lower-dimensional problem. A global planner uses a probabilistic roadmap (PRM) to compute a collision-free path …
Toward General Purpose Llms: From Domain Alignment To Multimodal And Multi-Agent Systems, Thang Nguyen
Toward General Purpose Llms: From Domain Alignment To Multimodal And Multi-Agent Systems, Thang Nguyen
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Large Language Models have shown remarkable capabilities, but their generalization across domains, modalities, and collaborative settings remains limited. This work explores how LLMs can be adapted along three dimensions: domain specialization, multimodal processing, and multi-agent reasoning. First, we introduce a reward-guided retrieval mechanism that fine-tunes the retrieval component of a language model using preference-based supervision, improving response relevance in specialized domains. Building on this, we design a multi-agent framework for complex information-seeking tasks, where distinct agents handle query clarification, evidence extraction, and answer synthesis, enabling robust reasoning without additional model training. Extending beyond language, we investigate how LLMs can operate …
Action This Day: The Mathematics And Machinations That Bested The German Enigma, Jonah Weinbaum
Action This Day: The Mathematics And Machinations That Bested The German Enigma, Jonah Weinbaum
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
This thesis presents a comprehensive and chronological overview of cryptographic techniques designed to break Enigma, beginning in 1932 and culminating in the creation of the Turing-Welchman Bombe. We discuss the mathematical theory and electromechanical implements used to decode one of history's greatest ciphers.
Reexamining the Bombe through the lens of modern group theory, we critique Alan Turing's estimation of the number of "stops" that the Bombe produces for various plaintext-ciphertext pairing structures. To address its limitations, we introduce a new framework for estimating the number of stops by extending John Dixon's theorem concerning the probability that uniformly distributed elements of …

Paleomagnetic Assessment Of The Appekunny And Greyson Fms., Lower Belt Supergroup, Montana, Usa., Olivia C. Moehl
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
The Belt Supergroup of the northwestern United States is one of the most extensive Mesoproterozoic sedimentary successions in North America. Although certain stratigraphic units have been well studied, correlations across the entire outcrop region remain unresolved. This project uses magnetostratigraphy and lithostratigraphy to investigate a potential lateral equivalency between the 1.4 billion-year-old (Ga) Appekunny Formation (Fm.) in Glacier National Park, MT and the 1.4 Ga Greyson Fm. in the Helena Embayment, MT. Both formations consist predominantly of shallow-water mudstones and contain the only North American occurrences of Horodyskia moniliformis, one of the oldest known macrofossils. Paleomagnetic analyses were conducted on …
Aestheticizing And Engendering Disease: The Case Of Tuberculosis, Abigail Dollries
Aestheticizing And Engendering Disease: The Case Of Tuberculosis, Abigail Dollries
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
This thesis examines how tuberculosis, known in the nineteenth century as “consumption,” was aestheticized in American cultural and medical discourse, particularly in industrial cities of the North between 1830 and 1850. It addresses the paradox at the heart of the disease’s representation: while tuberculosis was medically pathologized, it was simultaneously romanticized, especially when afflicting elite white women. The central problem explored is how this aestheticization of illness functioned to reinforce gender, class, and racial hierarchies by transforming suffering into a symbol of virtue, refinement, and social status. Using a cultural-historical methodology, this project analyzes a range of sources, including medical …

Application Of Person-Centered Therapy To Educator Preparation For Relationships With Families, James M. Mcginn
Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning
This article examines the importance of preparing future educators for effective partnerships with students’ families, a priority emphasized in contemporary educator standards. Despite evidence that strong educator-parent relationships foster academic and socio-emotional growth, many educators feel ill-equipped to engage with families confidently. Drawing upon the field of school counseling, this paper explores how concepts and pedagogies from counseling— particularly Person-Centered Therapy (PCT)—can inform educator preparation. The article provides an overview of the school counseling profession, reviews the foundational principles of PCT, and discusses how these approaches can be integrated into higher education curricula. By adopting non-directive, relationship-centered strategies rooted in …
“They're Like Slash”: Multimodality And Embodied Agency In Students' Critical Engagements With Texts, María José Aragón, Meghan Corella, Nora W. Lang
“They're Like Slash”: Multimodality And Embodied Agency In Students' Critical Engagements With Texts, María José Aragón, Meghan Corella, Nora W. Lang
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Despite recent calls to more fully incorporate multimodal perspectives into literacies research, there is still limited scholarship examining how students critically engage in reading activities by drawing on embodied practices. Racially and linguistically minoritized students are particularly disadvantaged by dominant logocentric and developmentalist approaches, which privilege oral and written discourse and often position these students as less capable of performing complex literacy practices. Drawing from three independent ethnographic studies, our multimodal interactional analysis examines how students of a range of ages and raciolinguistic backgrounds use embodied actions and other semiotic resources to agentively navigate text, task, and ideological constraints in …

Numerical Analysis And The Deal.Ii Implementation Of An Efficient And Robust Parameterized Ensemble Algorithm For Navier Stokes Flow In The Convection-Dominated Regimes, Brandiece Berry
All ETDs from UAB
Ensemble methods are widely used to approximate solutions for the Navier-Stokes Equations to account for inherent uncertainties within the system. This work goes about the numerical analysis and efficiency assessment of a fully discretized Ensemble Eddy Viscosity (EEV) model for the incompressible Stochastic Navier-Stokes Equations. The model is efficient due to the use of ensemble methods. Through a single coefficient matrix for $J$ realizations, we reduce computational cost and thereby ensure computational efficiency. It is found that the model is robust with the inclusion of the eddy viscosity term, as an additional uncertainty quantification. Finally, we verify theoretical convergence rates …

Reelin Regulation Of Striatal Physiology And Cocaine Reward, Kasey Lynn Brida
Reelin Regulation Of Striatal Physiology And Cocaine Reward, Kasey Lynn Brida
All ETDs from UAB
Drugs of abuse activate defined neuronal populations in brain reward structures such as the nucleus accumbens (NAc), which are thought to promote the enduring synaptic, circuit, and behavioral consequences of drug exposure. While the molecular and cellular effects arising from experience with drugs like cocaine are increasingly well understood, the mechanisms that sculpt NAc neuron participation are largely unknown. Here, we leveraged unbiased single-nucleus transcriptional profiling to identify expression of the secreted glycoprotein Reelin (encoded by the Reln gene) as a marker of cocaine-activated neurons within the rat NAc. Multiplexed in situ detection confirmed selective expression of the immediate early …

Food Insecurity Among Graduate Students At The University Of Alabama At Birmingham, Amy Elizabeth Callahan
All ETDs from UAB
College food insecurity (FI) has grown steadily as a field of research over the past fifteen years. Existing research primarily has demonstrated that FI is a persistent problem with various risk factors and myriad potential impacts on students, though graduate students are largely understudied in favor of undergraduate and aggregated student populations. Given the unique circumstances graduate students face, as well as expected demographic differences such as age and household characteristics, this is a serious gap in the literature. This dissertation aims to investigate graduate student food insecurity in the United States, and particularly at the University of Alabama at …
Platal Expansion Using The Invisalign Palatal Expander "Ipe", Hassan Chihab
Platal Expansion Using The Invisalign Palatal Expander "Ipe", Hassan Chihab
All ETDs from UAB
Palatal expansion has been used in orthodontics to treat a narrow maxilla and to primarily correct posterior dental crossbites. In younger patients, palatal expansion can readily be achieved through opening of the mid-palatal suture, as it is not fused at that age. As the mid-palatal suture matures, expansion will gradually be difficult to achieve, and more dental expansion is obtained rather than skeletal. In addition, there is a tendency to get more dental tipping. Palatal expansion has been recommended not only to correct crossbites but also to improve breathing in patients with sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). …

Elucidating The Proteolytic Determinants Of Flavivirus Infection, Lochlain C. Corliss
All ETDs from UAB
Flaviviruses, recently renamed to orthoflaviviruses, are small, enveloped viruses with positive-sense, single-stranded RNA (ssRNA) genomes of about 11 kilobases. Upon cell entry and uncoating, the viral RNA (vRNA) is directly translated at the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) as a single polyprotein that is then processed by the viral and cellular proteases into 10 functional subunits, consisting of three structural proteins and seven nonstructural (NS) proteins. Among the NS proteins are NS2B and NS3, which form the viral protease complex. NS3 consists of a serine protease domain while NS2B is anchored to the ER and contains a cytoplasmic loop that serves as …

Risk, Promotive, And Protective Factors In Adolescence For Incarceration In Adulthood: A 20 Year Longitudinal Study, Carlos Espinoza
All ETDs from UAB
The high rate of incarceration in the United States presents a public issue that affects individuals, families, and communities. Empirical research has identified several adolescent risk factors linked to an increased likelihood of incarceration in adulthood, such as individual delinquency, peer delinquency, parental antisocial behaviors, and neighborhood disorder. However, much less is known about factors that might promote or protect against incarceration specifically. Factors associated with a reduced likelihood of delinquent behavior (a precursor to incarceration) include higher empathy, prosocial peers, parental nurturance, and neighborhood connectedness. These factors may similarly reduce the risk of incarceration, just as they reduce the …

Context-Dependent Functional Connectivity During Attention Orienting And Reorienting: Comparing Individuals With Schizophrenia And Controls, Hyun Freeman
All ETDs from UAB
Attentional deficits are a well-established feature of schizophrenia, impacting various functional domains. Previous research suggested altered connectivity within attention networks may underlie these deficits, but few studies have examined how these net-works dynamically interact during different types of attention processes. In this study, we investigated functional connectivity patterns during attentional orienting and reori-enting to social and nonsocial cues in 25 individuals with schizophrenia and 25 controls. Participants completed a modified Posner spatial cueing task with both social (eyes) and nonsocial (arrows) cues during fMRI scanning. Using generalized psychophysiological interaction analysis with the left lateral occipital cortex (LOC) as a seed …

Stimulation And Quantification Of Dopamine-Associated Behaviors, Hunter Goffinett
All ETDs from UAB
Dopamine (DA) is a neurotransmitter involved in the regulation of essential behaviors, including motor control and reward processing. Alterations in DA levels can significantly modulate these behaviors: increased DA release is associated with heightened locomotion and enhanced preference for rewarding stimuli. Therefore, measuring behavioral changes in vivo provides critical insight into DA release and function. In this study, we quantified DA-associated behaviors by radiolytic stimulation of the Drosophila A-isoform of the transient receptor potential ankyrin type-1 A (dTRPA1(A)) channel and investigated how the human-immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and its secreted protein, the trans-activator of transcription regulatory protein (Tat), alter drug-induced behaviors. …

All ETDs from UAB
Just a few years after England experienced major societal shifts, both domestically in the passage of revolutionary women’s rights legislation and internationally in the Indian Mutiny, Mary Elizabeth Braddon’s Lady Audley’s Secret (1862) offered Victorian readers a way to confront their anxieties and uncertainties about the nation’s future. The traditional power structures of British imperialism and patriarchy faced growing resistance as Indian rebels and women’s rights reformers challenged their assumed natural authority. Past scholarship contextualizes the novel within these major historical events, viewing them in relation to each other in which the struggles of Indian colonial subjects equate to those …
Mesenchymal Hippo Signaling In Lung Development And Disease, Kylie Klinkhammer
Mesenchymal Hippo Signaling In Lung Development And Disease, Kylie Klinkhammer
All ETDs from UAB
During both lung development and regeneration, the proper coordination of different cellular populations working in concert are vital to proper development and wound repairs. Myofibroblasts, highly contractile mesenchymal cells, are vital the organization of cells during lung development and to the remodeling of the extra cellular matrix (ECM) during regeneration. As important as myofibroblasts are, their apoptosis or differentiation to a less contractile phenotype is equally important to normal development and regenerative processes. Excessive differentiation of myofibroblasts or the improper localization of myofibroblasts are associated with pulmonary fibrosis, which is characteristic of lung disease, such as bronchopulmonary dysplasia or idiopathic …
