Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Low-and middle-income countries experience 77% of the world’s premature deaths caused by non- communicable diseases, and their underlying health determinant data are often scarce and inaccurate. Im- proving satellite imagery data literacy worldwide is an integral step toward using the vast amount of publicly available data collected via satellites, such as air pollution, green space and light at night—all determinants of non-communicable diseases. Existing machine learning–based algorithms enable automated analysis of satel- lite imagery data, but health officials and scientists must know where to find and how to apply these algorithms to measure risk and target interventions.

The Marginal Value Of Public Pension Wealth: Evidence From Border House Prices, Darren Aiello, Asaf Bernstein, Mahyar Kargar, Ryan Lewis, Michael Schwert Jan 2025

The Marginal Value Of Public Pension Wealth: Evidence From Border House Prices, Darren Aiello, Asaf Bernstein, Mahyar Kargar, Ryan Lewis, Michael Schwert

Faculty Publications

We study how state pension windfalls affect property prices near state borders, where theory suggests real estate reflects the value of additional public resources. Windfalls, representing a source of state revenue about half the size of total taxes, provide economically significant and plausibly exogenous variation in fiscal conditions. We find that each dollar of pension asset returns increases border house prices by approximately two dollars, suggesting that governments allocate additional funds towards high-value projects or tax abatement rather than wasting incremental resources. Evidence of larger effects in financially constrained municipalities highlights how fiscal resources amplify welfare effects of economic shocks.

Customizable Vr Driving Experiences: Balancing User Comfort And Interactivity, Kaihao Tian

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Driving games and vehicle simulations have been a prominent genre in the gaming world, thriving on traditional platforms like consoles and PCs. Despite the advances in virtual reality (VR) technology, the genre has seen limited success in VR, largely due to challenges in balancing user comfort, immersion, and the physical constraints of VR hardware. The primary issue arises from the conflicting goals of interactivity and comfort. While VR offers an immersive, high-speed experience with dynamic steering and rapid movements, these same elements often cause discomfort and cybersickness, undermining the very immersion that VR promises.

This research aims to address these …
