Learning And Identity In Cross Functional Teams: A Communities Of Practice Perspective, Penelope K. Mcfarline Jan 2025

Learning And Identity In Cross Functional Teams: A Communities Of Practice Perspective, Penelope K. Mcfarline

Theses and Dissertations

Cross functional teams (CFTs) are groups of diverse professionals leveraged by organizations to address a variety of complex issues. While CFTs have the potential for rapid problem solving, product or service innovation, and knowledge creation, they sometimes underachieve or fail to meet their goals at great cost to the organization. Prior research points to the barriers that diverse professional identities create to CFT performance and learning. This study aims to explore the relationship between the professional identities of cross functional team members, and what and how they learn. A conceptual framework for the study sought to view a CFT as …

The General Movement Optimality Score-Revised (Gmos-R): An Early Biomarker For Developmental Delays, Shaaron E. Brown

Theses and Dissertations

The General Movement optimality score may provide insight into the relationship of term age General Movements and future neurodevelopmental disabilities and could be an early biomarker. This dissertation aimed to determine the relationship between term age neurologic function, measured by the optimality score of the General Movements, and postural control at term and three months (Chapter 2), and the relationship between neurologic function, at term and three months, and 12 month cognitive and motor outcomes (Chapter 3) and the impact of intervention on neurologic function and postural control at three months and on 12 month cognitive and motor outcomes in …

(Art) Education In The Afterlife Of Massive Resistance: Constructing, Capturing, And Commodifying Racialized Disability In Virginia’S Student Assignment Practices, 1956-1966 And Present Day, Jenna E. Gabriel Jan 2025

(Art) Education In The Afterlife Of Massive Resistance: Constructing, Capturing, And Commodifying Racialized Disability In Virginia’S Student Assignment Practices, 1956-1966 And Present Day, Jenna E. Gabriel

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores discursive functions of disability in pupil placement decisions in Massive Resistance Virginia, the relationship between disability and race that was constructed through these moves, and how these relationships surface in the reflections, perceptions, and pedagogy of a practicing art teacher, Nathan, who works at Arts High School (AHS), a Virginia specialty center high school. Under the umbrella of the Discourse Historical Approach, which relies on multiple, interdisciplinary data sources to explore how discourses evolve, I connect a robust archival analysis of historical data collected in the records of Virginia’s Pupil Placement Board (746 boxes, 1956-1966) with present-day …

Exploring Prenatal Cannabis Use Among Young Pregnant Bisexual Individuals: A Mixed Methods Study, Nicole Boss Jan 2025

Exploring Prenatal Cannabis Use Among Young Pregnant Bisexual Individuals: A Mixed Methods Study, Nicole Boss

Theses and Dissertations

The perinatal period is a critical time for health behaviors with outcomes that have short- and long-term effects for both childbearing person and child. Research indicates that young bisexual people are at greater risk of unintended pregnancy, experience psychosocial health disparities, and may be more likely to use cannabis during pregnancy. Few studies have examined this phenomenon. This study is a secondary analysis of mixed methods data from a longitudinal cohort study. Thematic analysis of qualitative data (n=12) revealed the contextual adaptivity of cannabis use, with participants explaining the situations and rationales which motivated their cannabis use changed over time. …

Establishing A Conventional Linac-Based Electron Flash Beam, Justin Defrancisco Jan 2025

Establishing A Conventional Linac-Based Electron Flash Beam, Justin Defrancisco

Theses and Dissertations

Problems: A rediscovered radiotherapy technique, FLASH, involves increasing the dose rate to >40 Gy/s. For a given dose, FLASH is shown to decrease the normal tissue complication probability without affecting the tumor control probability. More preclinical studies are necessary to confirm and enable these desirable properties on humans. Current preclinical investigations have diverse constraints, requiring FLASH apparatuses with flexible parameters and accurate control. However, there are limited FLASH platforms available, the existing ones are costly. Our institution is not in possession of any such infrastructure. Even if available, dosimetry and beam control in FLASH are extremely lacking. There is …

Social Support, Tobacco Attitudes/Perceptions Of Harm, And Asthma Status As Moderators In The Association Between Tobacco Exposure And Cotinine Levels, Rachel L. Pitts Jan 2025

Social Support, Tobacco Attitudes/Perceptions Of Harm, And Asthma Status As Moderators In The Association Between Tobacco Exposure And Cotinine Levels, Rachel L. Pitts

Theses and Dissertations

Tobacco use and exposure are linked to adverse health outcomes (e.g., respiratory conditions) and increased healthcare utilization (e.g., emergency room visits). This study examined the moderating role of social support, tobacco attitudes/perceptions of harm, and asthma status on associations between tobacco use (e.g., combustible product use) and exposure (e.g., secondhand smoke) and cotinine levels among individuals in Richmond, Virginia. We also explored differences in tobacco-related variables by asthma status and associations among tobacco use, secondhand smoke exposure, cotinine levels, and asthma control. Youth (n = 201) and adults (n = 209) (95.7% Black/African American; 60.6% female; 65.8% non-tobacco users; 21% …

Liner Notes On Black Trans Girlhood: Afrofuturist Affect & Black Popular Music As A Praxis Of Self-Fashioning, Shawn J. Williams Jan 2025

Liner Notes On Black Trans Girlhood: Afrofuturist Affect & Black Popular Music As A Praxis Of Self-Fashioning, Shawn J. Williams

Theses and Dissertations

Liner Notes on Black Trans Girlhood: Afrofuturist Affect & Black Popular Music as a Praxis of Self-Fashioning interprets Black musical performance in identity-making, with a focus on how music and Black trans identity intersect and informs Black trans girlhood. As such, Black trans girls render ourselves legible, i.e. understood without shame or judgment, by constructing our identities through the music by Black women we listen and dance to, or watch and sing. These musical connections affirm the possibilities of Black femme expression. This expression of Black femininity is due to what I call an Afrofuturist affect, by which I refer …

Witnessing Intellectual Humility: How A Peer’S Humble Introduction Affects Feedback Receptivity And Social Perception, Stephanie A. Barrientos Jan 2025

Witnessing Intellectual Humility: How A Peer’S Humble Introduction Affects Feedback Receptivity And Social Perception, Stephanie A. Barrientos

Theses and Dissertations

Might intellectual humility (IH) be contagious? Across two studies, we examined how individuals respond to constructive criticism depending on whether the feedback-giver demonstrated IH—defined as acknowledging one’s limitations and valuing learning. We focused on outcomes related to intellectual (or epistemic) openness in the context of writing, including self-focused state IH (acknowledging one’s own knowledge limitations), other-focused IH (valuing the insights of a peer expert), corrigibility (comfort with being corrected), feedback engagement, and attitudes toward future academic help-seeking in writing (AHS).

In Experiment 1, participants received feedback from a peer who conveyed IH through a brief self-descriptive statement. This subtle manipulation …

Molecular Mechanisms Of Kynurenine-Mediated Lifespan Regulation In Yeast, Ryan E. Counterman Jobb Jan 2025

Molecular Mechanisms Of Kynurenine-Mediated Lifespan Regulation In Yeast, Ryan E. Counterman Jobb

Theses and Dissertations

The kynurenine pathway is a highly conserved pathway that acts as the primary pathway for tryptophan catabolism and has been found to be involved in lifespan regulation across many diverse organisms. Caloric restriction (CR) is the only known dietary intervention to date that both increases the mean lifespan and the health span of multiple organisms, although the molecular mechanisms of these effects are not fully understood. There are known and sometimes contradictory relationships between the kynurenine pathway activity and the life- extending effect of CR but the crosstalk between the two is not well characterized. Understanding these relationships could lead …

Three Essays On Investment Strategies, Machine Learning And Risk Management, Nafise Aalipour Jan 2025

Three Essays On Investment Strategies, Machine Learning And Risk Management, Nafise Aalipour

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation explores the role of frictions, regime dynamics, and predictive modeling in understanding persistent anomalies and managing financial risk in equity markets. Across three essays, I examine how transaction costs limit arbitrage opportunities, how market regimes shape the evolution of return anomalies, and how a hybrid econometric-machine learning framework can enhance risk forecasting.

The first essay investigates whether transaction costs and idiosyncratic risk constrain the profitability of long-term reversal and medium-term momentum strategies. Using a comprehensive dataset from 1927 to 2022, I estimate stock-level trading frictions through three distinct methods - Limited Dependent Variable models, Gibbs cost estimators, and …

Reverse Geometric Dispersion In The Beaufort Sea: Dissecting Sound Propagation At Long Ranges In Ducted Profiles, Jessica Desrochers Jan 2025

Reverse Geometric Dispersion In The Beaufort Sea: Dissecting Sound Propagation At Long Ranges In Ducted Profiles, Jessica Desrochers

Open Access Dissertations

Acoustic propagation in the Arctic is evolving as surface temperatures increase and ice melts, resulting in a changing sound propagation environment. This study investigates the acoustic arrival structure in the Canada Basin and its connection to the underlying sound speed profiles. Two Seagliders were deployed in the summer of 2016 and 2017, diving in a sawtooth pattern collecting conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD) data as part of the Canada Basin Acoustic Glider Experiment (CABAGE). These data are used to calculate sound speed profiles used to predict and understand acoustic arrival structures.

The warming of the Pacific Summer Water and surface …

Maximum Trimmed Likelihood Estimation For Discrete Multivariate Vasicek Processes, Thomas M. Fullerton Jr., Michael Pokojovy, Andrews T. Anum, Ebenezer Nkum Jan 2025

Maximum Trimmed Likelihood Estimation For Discrete Multivariate Vasicek Processes, Thomas M. Fullerton Jr., Michael Pokojovy, Andrews T. Anum, Ebenezer Nkum

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

The multivariate Vasicek model is commonly used to capture mean-reverting dynamics typical for short rates, asset price stochastic log-volatilities, etc. Reparametrizing the discretized problem as a VAR(1) model, the parameters are oftentimes estimated using the multivariate least squares (MLS) method, which can be susceptible to outliers. To account for potential model violations, a maximum trimmed likelihood estimation (MTLE) approach is utilized to derive a system of nonlinear estimating equations, and an iterative procedure is developed to solve the latter. In addition to robustness, our new technique allows for reliable recovery of the long-term mean, unlike existing methodologies. A set of …

Climate Liberalism And Decarbonization, Jonathan H. Adler Jan 2025

Climate Liberalism And Decarbonization, Jonathan H. Adler

Faculty Publications

Existing climate policy goals require dramatic and rapid reductions in greenhouse gas (“GHG”) emissions. Achieving such reductions within the desired time frame is a tremendous challenge, particularly through conventional regulatory approaches. The conventional approach to environmental problems is to treat such problems as “market failures” that can be corrected by government intervention, such as through regulation. Such approaches are constrained by various sources of government failure that are exacerbated by the scale and scope of the problem. The knowledge problem, administrative transaction costs, and limits on regulatory throughput capacity all hamper the use of traditional regulatory tools to address the …

What Did Gitlow Do?, James Y. Stern Jan 2025

What Did Gitlow Do?, James Y. Stern

Faculty Publications

Gitlow is generally regarded as the first modern incorporation case, the genesis of both federal free speech curbs on state action and the larger project of making the same limitations that the federal Constitution imposes on the federal government applicable to the states. In both respects, moreover, it can also be seen as an important milestone in the larger twentieth century transformation of federal court practice and constitutional understanding centered on the assertion of individual rights. That linkage is no accident. For all the talk about federalism and state sovereignty in the U.S. Reports, the modern jurisprudence of constitutional rights …

Accidental Brady Violations, Adam M. Gershowitz Jan 2025

Accidental Brady Violations, Adam M. Gershowitz

Faculty Publications

Prosecutors are often seen as the villains of the criminal justice system. And the most villainous thing a prosecutor can do is to commit an intentional Brady violation by withholding favorable and material evidence from the defense. Not surprisingly, there is a wide literature criticizing prosecutors for flagrant misconduct.

But not all Brady violations are intentional. Prosecutors sometimes—perhaps often—commit accidental Brady violations by inadvertently failing to recognize favorable evidence. Because many prosecutors are inexperienced, overworked, and under-trained, they do not recognize exculpatory or impeachment evidence when it is in their files. Additionally, prosecutors also fail to disclose evidence that is …

Public Protest And Civil Unrest, Timothy Zick Jan 2025

Public Protest And Civil Unrest, Timothy Zick

Faculty Publications

Governments and officials must respond to protest-related civil unrest. How they do so is both an index of official respect for dissent and a measure of how committed governments are to democratic accountability. This Article examines official responses to civil unrest in connection with several recent high-profile demonstrations. In general, it concludes that governments and officials have relied on aggressive and increasingly draconian measures to quell protest-related civil unrest. Among other things, they have invoked emergency powers and used aggressive protest policing methods; dispatched federal agency personnel and threatened to deploy military forces to police demonstrations; enacted successive waves of …

New Threats To Campus Protest, Timothy Zick Jan 2025

New Threats To Campus Protest, Timothy Zick

Faculty Publications

This symposium Essay focuses on how universities responded, both initially and after the fact, to campus protests concerning the Hamas-Israel War. During those protests students and others erected encampments, held demonstrations, displayed signs, vandalized university property, and occupied buildings. Some protesters communicated anti-Semitic tropes and slogans. Although a few university leaders responded to the protests by negotiating with protest leaders, most relied on law enforcement and security to clear encampments and restore order. Since the initial protests, universities have adopted a spate of new policies that threaten campus protest. These measures include cancellation of already-permitted demonstrations, content-based speech restrictions, bans …

Restructuring Ruritania: Bankruptcy, Sovereign Debt, And The Equity Receivership, Nathan B. Oman Jan 2025

Restructuring Ruritania: Bankruptcy, Sovereign Debt, And The Equity Receivership, Nathan B. Oman

Faculty Publications

The traditional legal story of sovereign restructuring goes something like this: foreign governments cannot file for bankruptcy under domestic law. When faced with the need to restructure unsustainable debts, they must negotiate with each of their creditors. Since the late 1980s, private debt has been held by increasingly diverse and dispersed bondholders, making renegotiation more difficult. Defaulting debtors face two basic problems: first, they have no process analogous to the automatic stay in bankruptcy, which can pause litigation by creditors and buy time for an orderly reorganization; second, and more importantly, they have no process analogous to the cramdown provisions …

Against The Sliding Scale, Alan J. Meese Jan 2025

Against The Sliding Scale, Alan J. Meese

Faculty Publications

Gavil and Salop claim that the Chicago School’s “conservative critique of antitrust law” has peddled numerous pro-defendant economic assumptions, misleading courts in their assessment of alleged exclusionary conduct. The resulting legal standards, they say, require plaintiffs to adduce too much evidence to establish a prima facie case, for instance, producing false negatives and thus allowing restraints that injure purchasers to avoid condemnation. Drawing on decision theory, they propose reforms to the rule of reason analysis applied to exclusionary agreements to extirpate the Chicago School’s baneful influence. In suggesting these reforms, they hope sometimes to alter the parties’ respective burdens of …

The Kincare Craze In Child Protection: Romanticism, Subterfuge, And Racial Separatism, James G. Dwyer Jan 2025

The Kincare Craze In Child Protection: Romanticism, Subterfuge, And Racial Separatism, James G. Dwyer

Faculty Publications

Among recent developments in family law, the most prevalent issue on legislative agendas has been Kincare as an alternative to non-relative foster care when maltreated children cannot remain with parents. Long an available option legally but traditionally regarded with skepticism by child protection workers, Kincare is now idealized. A steady stream of state legislative bills aims to encourage or command child protection and foster care agencies to place maltreated children in the home of relatives or friends of their parents whenever one is available, ostensibly based on an assumption that this is categorically better for children than living with unrelated …
