We conducted a population-based survey of food shopping attitudes and habits to inform decision-making about ways to expand market access for New England’s food producers; these findings can be generalized to the adult population of New England. Our research shows that more than half of New Englanders say farm stores or stands, farmers’ markets and retail stores are easily available to them, but they only shop occasionally at these places, indicating other barriers may limit participation. To understand potential barriers, we conducted 35 interviews with New Hampshire adult residents between June and November of 2023, capturing a diverse range of …

We conducted a population-based survey of food shopping attitudes and habits to inform efforts to expand market access for New England farms. Our findings can be generalized to the adult population of New England. This research brief shares insights from our survey question asking respondents to indicate how important a series of food attributes are to their everyday food purchasing decisions (response options included “not important”, “neutral”, or “important”). Our findings show that over 70% of New Englanders say food that they like, is "tasty," "high quality" and "healthy" are important to them. The majority (78%) of New Englanders say …
The Disaggregation Of Platform Labor: Theorizing Skin Tone Work In The Black Influencer Beauty Economy, Ta’Les Love
The Disaggregation Of Platform Labor: Theorizing Skin Tone Work In The Black Influencer Beauty Economy, Ta’Les Love
Open Access Publishing Support Funded Articles
Research on the beauty influencer economy highlights the role that racism plays in platform labor, as race is a prominent determinant in the hierarchy of influencers. While the literature on beauty influencers reveals the multi-faceted labor necessary for success in the genre, less attention is given to the ways that skin tone discrimination—or colorism—defines one’s subject position as a beauty influencer. I argue that skin tone is an identity characteristic that ultimately multiplies the labor required of beauty influencers, particularly for Black women with darker complexions. The extra labor required of persons from a marginalized subject position within a marginalized …

Marketing is a necessary function of academic libraries but is frequently deprioritized in library job descriptions and organizational structures. This article serves as a case study of how one library worked to formalize marketing efforts by moving from ad hoc committee-based work to structured positions guided by an organizational marketing plan. Sharing examples over time to show the impact of marketing efforts, the authors detail the process of creating an outline for a marketing plan, as well as new initiatives that developed through the process.

The overturning of Roe v. Wade in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization (2022) has led to varying abortion laws across states in the U.S., potentially influencing medical education choices. While some research has examined abortion policy changes and medical residencies and fellowship decisions, none has investigated abortion policy and medical school decisions. This study aims to determine whether pre-medical students’ personal views on abortion influence their willingness to attend medical schools in states where abortion is illegal at all stages EXCEPT to save the life of the mother. A cross-sectional survey was distributed to pre-medical organizations at the two …

Utilizing 16s Rna Sequencing To Identify Bacterial Species Colonizing Lame Birds With Bacterial Chondronecrosis With Osteomyelitis, Kara Hoover, Andi Asnayanti, Adnan Alrubaye
2025 Research Poster Competition
Poultry lameness has become prevalent in recent years due to high growth rates in broiler chickens. Bacterial chondronecrosis with osteomyelitis (BCO), the main cause of lameness, is characterized by necrosis of the femur and tibia in afflicted birds. Heavier birds are more susceptible to bacterial stress in these regions due to increased pressure on their growth plates. BCO lameness poses both ethical and financial threats to the poultry industry, as up to 15% of flocks can become affected during outbreaks. The purpose of this experiment was to identify bacterial species present in birds with BCO lameness. 1,800 chicks were randomly …

Develop A Cross-Platform Toolset For In Situ Deep-Sea Coral Propagation, Joe Bevilacqua
Open Access Master's Theses
Mesophotic and deep-sea gorgonian octocorals in the Gulf of Mexico were significantly damaged following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, prompting a major federal investment in developing restoration techniques for these fragile, slow-growing communities. Asexual, in-situ coral propagation offers a biologically viable path for restoration at depth. However, current ROV systems are not optimized for the delicate, fine-scale interactions required to perform this process reliably. The objective of this research was to design, prototype, and evaluate a ROV-mountable toolset capable of preparing octocoral fragments for potting in epoxy substrate, with the additional goal of integrating the toolset into URI’s Coral Carousel …

Oyster larvae aquaculture is an important industry, both economically and environmentally, helping to create sustainable food systems by supplying seed oysters to farms, and also to restoration projects aimed at building coastal resilience and improving water quality by rejuvenating wild populations. However, oyster larvae are highly susceptible to rapid mortality events, crashes, which can seriously impact the industry. One source of these crashes in hatchery systems is vibriosis, caused by pathogenic species of Vibrio bacteria that are ubiquitous in temperate coastal waters, and with rising surface water temperatures their prevalence and virulence are increasing. To prevent these larval crashes from …
