Analysis Of Gas Station Drugs Using Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry And Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Megan Joos
All ETDs from UAB
Gas stations and head shops are a seemingly safe and legal marketplace for drug purchase. However, although marketed as dietary supplements or cognitive enhancers, the products sold there have been known to contain psychoactive substances which may be mislabeled or actually contain regulated substances. This study investigates the composition of such products, specifically those labeled as kratom and non-kratom Mitragyna species using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and those labeled as phenibut using GC-MS and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Samples were acquired from retailers in the Birmingham, AL area. The products underwent both qualitative and quantitative analysis of their ingredients …

Unveiling The Other: Feminine And Colonial Subjugation In Mary Elizabeth Braddon's England, Kaylie Rastegar
All ETDs from UAB
Just a few years after England experienced major societal shifts, both domestically in the passage of revolutionary women’s rights legislation and internationally in the Indian Mutiny, Mary Elizabeth Braddon’s Lady Audley’s Secret (1862) offered Victorian readers a way to confront their anxieties and uncertainties about the nation’s future. The traditional power structures of British imperialism and patriarchy faced growing resistance as Indian rebels and women’s rights reformers challenged their assumed natural authority. Past scholarship contextualizes the novel within these major historical events, viewing them in relation to each other in which the struggles of Indian colonial subjects equate to those …
Mesenchymal Hippo Signaling In Lung Development And Disease, Kylie Klinkhammer
Mesenchymal Hippo Signaling In Lung Development And Disease, Kylie Klinkhammer
All ETDs from UAB
During both lung development and regeneration, the proper coordination of different cellular populations working in concert are vital to proper development and wound repairs. Myofibroblasts, highly contractile mesenchymal cells, are vital the organization of cells during lung development and to the remodeling of the extra cellular matrix (ECM) during regeneration. As important as myofibroblasts are, their apoptosis or differentiation to a less contractile phenotype is equally important to normal development and regenerative processes. Excessive differentiation of myofibroblasts or the improper localization of myofibroblasts are associated with pulmonary fibrosis, which is characteristic of lung disease, such as bronchopulmonary dysplasia or idiopathic …

REGULATORY FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH DISCRIMINATORY BEHAVIORS AMONG FEDERALLY QUALIFIED HEALTH CENTERS MIRANDA SEDILLO Executive Doctor of Science (DSc) in Healthcare Leadership Abstract Background Socially constructed classism restricts access to human rights, including employment and growth opportunities. The civil rights and labor movements have intersected throughout United States’ history as many civil rights leaders championed equal rights in employment opportunities. For several decades, the U.S. government has used laws and regulations to promote a healthy workplace free of discrimination. The influence of legal regulation on behavior change enforces punitive actions for discriminatory behaviors in the workplace. Yet, in 2020, the U.S. …

Prevalence Of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction In A Young Adult Population, Tyler Thomas
All ETDs from UAB
Background Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) varies in prevalence depending on the demographic and can significantly impact quality of life. There is a lack of research on MGD in young adult, professional student populations. Professional students often experience high levels of stress, reduced sleep, and increased electronic device use, which may elevate their risk for developing MGD. Specific Aims This cross-sectional clinical analysis has two specific aims: (1) to determine the prevalence of MGD in a young adult, professional student population, and (2) to identify potential risk factors and clinical assessments correlated with MGD. Methods A total of 147 professional students …

Precast Foundation For Steel Lattice Towers, Wessam Ramadan
All ETDs from UAB
Steel lattice towers are essential structures used in power transmission, telecommunications, and wind turbine towers, where they must withstand various loads to ensure stability and durability. The foundation system plays a crucial role in supporting these towers, with different types chosen based on soil conditions, environmental factors, and project requirements. Traditional foundations, such as drilled shafts, spread footings, and steel grillages have been widely used but often come with challenges, including long installation times, high labor costs, and difficult site conditions. As demand for transmission infrastructure grows, there is a need for faster, more efficient, and environmentally friendly foundation solutions. …
Uncovering The Role Of Heparanase-Armed Extracellular Vesicles In Sepsis-Associated Vascular Endotheliopathy, Robert Patrick Richter
Uncovering The Role Of Heparanase-Armed Extracellular Vesicles In Sepsis-Associated Vascular Endotheliopathy, Robert Patrick Richter
All ETDs from UAB
Sepsis remains one of the most frequent causes of mortality and life-altering morbidity in humans of all ages globally. Though sepsis pathobiology is incompletely understood, it is clear that a unifying feature of all sepsis phenotypes is systemic vascular endotheliopathy and damage to the luminal glycocalyx of endothelial cells, or eGC, that leads to organ injury. While prior work has established that heparan sulfate (HS) is an especially important eGC constituent that helps regulate a host of endothelial cell (EC) functions, its role in promoting endotheliopathy during sepsis has not been fully characterized. Additionally, previous studies in the context of …

Chronic Pain And Resilience: Associations And Interactions With Diet, Asia Wiggins
Chronic Pain And Resilience: Associations And Interactions With Diet, Asia Wiggins
All ETDs from UAB
Chronic pain is a significant issue globally, affecting millions of people. One relatively new way mechanism to reduce pain is to promote resilience. Yet, the effect of resilience on chronic pain may differ by sociodemographic factors (like racialized group). Furthermore, access to therapies that promote resilience may be limited across populations. However, the utilization of diet interventions for chronic pain symptoms has also been well-examined. In addition, research has shown that diets can be related to psychological resilience. Therefore, beneficial diets could potentially be utilized as a catalyst to, not only promote resilience, but also reduce pain (in combination with …

Optimizing Defibrillation Response: A Quality Improvement Initiative In The Cath Lab, Sara Cullis Bsn, Rn
Nursing Publications, Posters, & Presentations
This poster was presented at the 2025 Parkview Nursing Research Symposium.
Patients undergoing diagnostic or emergent procedures in the Cardiac Cath Lab are at risk of developing lethal arrhythmias, which require immediate defibrillation to prevent adverse outcomes. Currently, the use of paddles and the absence of pre-applied defibrillator pads delay response time during critical events, increasing the risk of morbidity and mortality. Additionally, there is a liability when staff assume which patients are “high risk” versus “diagnostic,” as even seemingly low-risk cases can rapidly deteriorate without warning. This quality improvement initiative aims to address this gap by ensuring defibrillator pads …

Business librarians have yet to create a companion document to the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education but instead have developed a rich resource bank of instructional materials with examples of how the Framework can be practically applied in business librarianship.1 With the absence of a formal companion document, the authors of this chapter took a wide view to better understand how the Framework has been used by business librarians since its inception. In addition to the Framework, business librarians have sought to align their work with discipline-specific documents including the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business …
Cultivating Plain Language Skills For Engineering Students, Catherine Wong, Cynthia Carlson
Cultivating Plain Language Skills For Engineering Students, Catherine Wong, Cynthia Carlson
Faculty Publications
While engineers are learning the vocabulary of the profession, understandably, they want to practice, and perhaps show their professors that they are proficient. This leads to student writing that is overly complicated and full of jargon. This is not the type of document that would be clear to the public, or even to a professional outside of the narrowly focused field of the particular engineer. After graduation, engineers’ writing becomes exponentially more important. Often approval of projects relies on residents’ or clients’ understanding of engineers’ work. For example, an engineering firm completing an investigation of an important health concern such …

Our findings show that over 70% of New Englanders say food that they like, is "tasty," "high quality" and "healthy" are important to them. The majority (78%) of New Englanders say …
The Disaggregation Of Platform Labor: Theorizing Skin Tone Work In The Black Influencer Beauty Economy, Ta’Les Love
The Disaggregation Of Platform Labor: Theorizing Skin Tone Work In The Black Influencer Beauty Economy, Ta’Les Love
Open Access Publishing Support Funded Articles
Research on the beauty influencer economy highlights the role that racism plays in platform labor, as race is a prominent determinant in the hierarchy of influencers. While the literature on beauty influencers reveals the multi-faceted labor necessary for success in the genre, less attention is given to the ways that skin tone discrimination—or colorism—defines one’s subject position as a beauty influencer. I argue that skin tone is an identity characteristic that ultimately multiplies the labor required of beauty influencers, particularly for Black women with darker complexions. The extra labor required of persons from a marginalized subject position within a marginalized …

Utilizing 16s Rna Sequencing To Identify Bacterial Species Colonizing Lame Birds With Bacterial Chondronecrosis With Osteomyelitis, Kara Hoover, Andi Asnayanti, Adnan Alrubaye
2025 Research Poster Competition
Poultry lameness has become prevalent in recent years due to high growth rates in broiler chickens. Bacterial chondronecrosis with osteomyelitis (BCO), the main cause of lameness, is characterized by necrosis of the femur and tibia in afflicted birds. Heavier birds are more susceptible to bacterial stress in these regions due to increased pressure on their growth plates. BCO lameness poses both ethical and financial threats to the poultry industry, as up to 15% of flocks can become affected during outbreaks. The purpose of this experiment was to identify bacterial species present in birds with BCO lameness. 1,800 chicks were randomly …

Develop A Cross-Platform Toolset For In Situ Deep-Sea Coral Propagation, Joe Bevilacqua
Open Access Master's Theses
Mesophotic and deep-sea gorgonian octocorals in the Gulf of Mexico were significantly damaged following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, prompting a major federal investment in developing restoration techniques for these fragile, slow-growing communities. Asexual, in-situ coral propagation offers a biologically viable path for restoration at depth. However, current ROV systems are not optimized for the delicate, fine-scale interactions required to perform this process reliably. The objective of this research was to design, prototype, and evaluate a ROV-mountable toolset capable of preparing octocoral fragments for potting in epoxy substrate, with the additional goal of integrating the toolset into URI’s Coral Carousel …
