Using Wida English Language Development Standards Framework To Make Language Visible In An International Baccalaureate Unit Of Inquiry, Wanqing Zhao
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis discusses the integration of the theory and practices of International Baccalaureate (IB) programs with those of the World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) English Language Development (ELD) Standards Framework (2020) to enhance language learning for English Language Learners (ELLs) in an IB Primary Years Program (PYP) in China. Focusing on a fourth-grade Unit of Inquiry (UOI) that concerns human migration, this paper explores two core areas: alignment between IB’s holistic, inquiry-driven approach and the WIDA ELD Standards Framework (2020), and strategies for making language visible to ELLs through WIDA’s Key Language Use of Explain genre family. The Teaching …
The Impact Of Trauma-Informed Teaching In A Middle School Classroom, Kathleen M. Wittig
The Impact Of Trauma-Informed Teaching In A Middle School Classroom, Kathleen M. Wittig
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Student trauma has become more prevalent in the classroom setting since the COVID-19 pandemic. More and more schools are adopting a trauma-informed/sensitive approach to teaching to serve the growing number of students with trauma in the classroom. Educators are finding themselves faced with more emotional and behavioral issues in the classroom, teacher burnout is increasing daily, and more students are being referred to special education. It is not that these students are bad kids; rather, it is that they lack certain skills to allow them to be successful. Instead of trying to change the child, educators need to look at …

Dementia Caregivers’ Perspectives On Technology’S Place In Care Practices: Mixed Methods Survey, Julia A. Scott, Emma Cepukenas, Mckenzie Himes, Kennedy Anderson, Kiren Grewal, An Mai, Sheila Yuter, Patricia M. Simone
Psychology
Background:
As the number of individuals diagnosed with dementia continues to grow, collective caregiving capacity is simultaneously declining. As a result, caregivers often face significant stress and burnout, which negatively impacts both their well-being and the quality of care they are able to provide. To address these challenges, various forms of technology have been developed to support caregiving responsibilities for people with dementia. Barriers to widespread adoption include the cost of technology, lack of caregiver training, limited awareness of available solutions, privacy and ethical concerns, and resistance to change from both caregivers and care recipients. By identifying these key insights, …

Academic Freedom Under Attack: How Faculty And Students Can Protect Their Rights Situated In The Scholarly And Public Spheres, Emma Hansen
Honors Senior Capstones and Theses
This thesis project challenged me to apply my learning to the larger community and accomplish something that would make a lasting impact at Roger Williams University. When I was attempting to come up with my topic, I tussled with how my project could accomplish my main goal, to help people. With the current threats to academic freedom and institutional autonomy from the Trump Administration, I recognized that the faculty were expressing concern about the permanence of their jobs. The general feeling on campus and in the news was fear. So, I thought to myself, “How do I put these fears …

Sustainable Consumer Behavior: Identifying Behavior Change Stages In Recycling In The Usa, Jing Jian Xiao, Feihong Xia
Human Development and Family Science Faculty Publications
Sustainable consumer behavior refers to any behavior that benefits environmental protection and social justice. Previous research has shown that sustainable consumer behavior is positively associated with consumer wellbeing. Recycling behavior is a type of sustainable behavior that has been studied extensively. However, research on behavior change in recycling is limited. The purpose of this study is to identify the change stages for recycling behavior among American consumers. Using national data collected in the U.S. and under the guidance of the transtheoretical model of behavior change (TTM), the results showed that most Americans engage in recycling behavior, but a minority of …

Racial socialization, a process in which parents communicate beliefs and values about children’s race and cultural backgrounds to help children prepare for their current and future social interactions, has lasting effects on child development. Understanding the extent to which children understand race in the context of racialized violence, and the extent to which parents are willing to engage their children in such conversations, is critical for professionals who work with and support families through these challenging contexts. Existing evidence suggests parents in racially minoritized groups often put more conscious efforts into racial socialization than their White parent peers. Although recent …

Controls On Longitudinal Stream Profile Evolution In Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Samuel Schoenmann, Lisa Tranel, Eric W. Peterson, Jonathan Boyd Thayn
Faculty Publications - Geography, Geology, and the Environment
Canyons in Guadalupe Mountains National Park are excellent locations to study the discrete boundary conditions that influence longitudinal channel profile evolution including climate, tectonics, hydrology, and lithology. The Guadalupe Mountain landscape records deep earth mantle processes in combination with surficial channel erosion and incision. Knickpoints and convex segments in longitudinal river profiles document impacts of climate change, tectonics, or surface processes. This study combines field observations with an analysis of longitudinal profile slopes and residual errors to evaluate how bedrock strength can be distinguished from features created by climate change, faulting, or subsidence in Pine Springs and McKittrick Canyons within …

Faculty Publications - Geography, Geology, and the Environment
Traditional water quality monitoring methods often face limitations of equipment costs and labor demands, requiring innovative approaches to effectively assess the ecological health of inland lakes across vast areas. This research explores the application of free, publicly available water color chromaticity analysis for midcontinent lakes in Minnesota, USA. We examined water color variations in Minnesota’s Sentinel Lakes using Landsat 8 OLI data to analyze surface reflectance samples collected from the deepest area within each lake during the late summer, corresponding to peak annual insolation and trophic activity. The median dominant visible wavelength was used to characterize water color. Results indicate …

Revolutionary Worldmaking: James Monroe Whitfield’S Poems In Martin Delany’S Blake; Or, The Huts Of America, Magdalena Zapędowska
Jacobson Center: Publications
Martin Delany’s Blake, serialized in the Weekly Anglo-African in 1861–62, includes five unattributed poems from James Monroe Whitfield’s volume America and Other Poems, which appear in the novel as compositions of the Cuban revolutionary poet Placido. Largely overlooked in scholarship on Blake, Whitfield/Placido’s poems are crucial to the impending revolt of the oppressed because they foster a collective emancipatory consciousness and model, through poetic form, the meticulous organization on which the revolution relies for success. Resonating with other poems and songs quoted in the novel, they speak to broader questions of poetry’s role in building communities of resistance. In turn, …

The Relationship Between Motor Abilities And Cultural Factors In Autistic Children, Lindsey Marie Anderson
The Relationship Between Motor Abilities And Cultural Factors In Autistic Children, Lindsey Marie Anderson
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Autism and motor abilities have been found to be closely related. Culture affects motor development as well as the various diagnostic criteria for an autism diagnosis, yet it is rarely considered in research and in diagnostics. This study aimed to explore the relationship between cultural factors, the social characteristics of autism, and motor abilities in autistic and non-autistic children by utilizing a demographic survey, the SRS-2, and the MABC-2 Balance subtest. The information and scores were analyzed to determine if the relationship between autism characteristics still stands when cultural factors are considered, and to determine which cultural factors mediate the …

Above And Belowground Biomass Of A Multidecadal Restored Tallgrass Prairie Chronosequence And Its Influence On Soil Carbon Dynamics, Adam John Bauer
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Evidence supports the idea that tallgrass prairie restoration has the potential to sequester carbon, but the influences of site age and quality on restored tallgrass prairie carbon dynamics are not well known. This dissertation characterizes a multidecadal tallgrass prairie chronosequence and evaluates the influence of both restoration quality and time since restoration on biomass and soil carbon dynamics using both remotely sensed and field data collected from Nachusa Grasslands tallgrass prairie restorations. It also expands on the traditional aspatial analyses using geographically weighted data to examine the spatiotemporal variation in environmental variables that influence restored tall grass prairie carbon dynamics. …

The Relationships Between Learner Socio-Demographic Factors, Self-Efficacy, Culture, And Student Engagement In The Online Learning Environment, Nikki L. Lagrone
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The continuing need to understand and evaluate student engagement, specifically in the online learning environment, is critical for researchers and instructional designers. To design online learning for optimal learning outcomes, researchers must account for the individual cultural and cognitive characteristics of the learner. By examining cultural attributes of the learner, instructional designers will be able to design online instruction as a more inclusive learning environment. This quantitative, explanatory correlational research study aimed to investigate the relationship between learner cultural attributes and online student engagement. Additionally, how learner socio-demographic factors and online learning self-efficacy are related to online student engagement were …
Encouraging Selection Of Effective Learning Strategies, Kaya Easley
Encouraging Selection Of Effective Learning Strategies, Kaya Easley
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
College students have difficulty selecting effective learning strategies, often due to their perceptions of cost and value of these strategies. The goal of the present study was to examine ways to increase students’ perceptions of value to outweigh their perceptions of cost to help them select an effective learning strategy (generation). Students were randomly assigned to one of five conditions in an additive design: no treatment control, experience comparing generation to a less effective learning strategy, experience plus information about its application to one’s life, experience and application plus evidence of the effectiveness of generation, or experience, application, and evidence, …
Historicity And Axiology: Temporal Implications For Axiology, Bennett Gilbert
Historicity And Axiology: Temporal Implications For Axiology, Bennett Gilbert
History Faculty Publications and Presentations
To develop the axiology of moral (or ethical) values, phenomenological analysis must look at temporality in a way that is unfamiliar to it. This way is through knowledge and experience of the actual historical past, from which it has been separated by the Heideggerian conception of historicity and its classical Husserlian analysis of time consciousness. The development of historical studies helps to make this possible. A simple sample model of the diachronesis of the awareness of ethical significance, value, and obligation is presented. It moves the analysis from a presentist focus to the field of experience in which subjects develop …
History’S Movement: The Historical Ontology In Social Ontology, Bennett B. Gilbert
History’S Movement: The Historical Ontology In Social Ontology, Bennett B. Gilbert
History Faculty Publications and Presentations
Social ontology and the philosophy of history both concern themselves with human collectives. Social ontology is supposed to be theoretical, although the social sciences are supposed to be empirical. Philosophy of history is supposed to be theoretical, although historiography is supposed to be empirical. In fact, the a priori and the a posteriori mix in both theoretical and empirical endeavors in similar ways. Since the two endeavors hold part of their objects of inquiry in common, they should be able to speak to another. In what follows I aim to expose some of the ways their dialogue stresses and can …

Interdependence And Identity: Moral Relation In An Historical World, Bennett B. Gilbert

The twin concepts in the title will be introduced in the contexts of the philosophy of history and of philosophical personalism, as distinct from (though related to) their uses as logical and metaphysical categories. Overviews of varieties of philosophy of history and of basic principles I employ are foundations of the argument. Concepts, or ideas, in general have, I argue, real existence through the way that personal agents use them in creating the histories of human relations. I introduce a Personalist account, which has a more thoroughly diachronic character. Further remarks on the power of ideas to create relations expands …
