Course Syllabi

This course is the third in a Humanities Initiative learning community themed around Culture, Water, and Life en La Frontera. The class will introduce students to a variety of dramatic works from a range of time periods and regions, including early modern England and the contemporary US–Mexico Borderlands. We will pay special attention to the ways that plays are adapted and performed to fit new contexts and to speak to current concerns, including questions of identity, language, culture, and power. Broadly, we will think about the power of art and performance to address social, ecological, and cultural issues.

As part of the 2025 VCUarts MFA Thesis Exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), I transformed the 'Sponge' gallery on the top floor of The Anderson, VCU’s historic thesis exhibition home, into The Green Room, a neon green, immersive video and performance space featuring mirrors, disco lights, a foam tile dance floor, makeup stations, and a functioning green-screen editing suite. The Bitch And The Boogeyman: Violence Against Women And Gendered Morality In American Slasher Films, Davis A. Smith

This research examines the relationships between on-screen depictions of violence in American slasher horror films and depictions of gendered morality of victims. Slashers are a subgenre of horror film that arose out of the exploitation cinema movement of the 1970s that are characterized primarily by the presence of one or more human killers inflicting violence on a group of protagonists, typically through the use of bladed weapons. Data collected comes from a comprehensive set of thirty-six American slasher films that received a wide theatrical release, with exemptions for films whose primary genre is not slasher and only selecting three films …

Historically, courts tended to differentiate between invidious discrimination against racial minorities and benign discrimination against whites in the context of affirmative action movements. With the social movements galvanized by the conservatives and the change of composition of the Supreme Courts and lower courts, the feasibility of race-conscious measures aimed at helping minorities is substantially reduced. The conservatives' win in Fearless, coupled with the Trump Administration's attacks on DEI, have produced a self-censoring effect on charitable organizations. Because of these threats, race-conscious charities will have to modify their practices to become more "inclusive" or face legal challenges from conservatives.

The Christian Regenhard Center for Emergency Response Studies, leveraging the expertise of its faculty, staff, Advisory Board and colleagues, has consistently programmed activities focused on high-rise fire safety. The upcoming 50^th anniversary of the film The Towering Inferno was an inspiration.

We decided this would be more lighthearted and less purely technical than many of our events. We wanted to consider both the film, and use it to reflect on the state of fire safety in tall buildings in New York City.

Comics and theatre share several, often overlooked similarities, like their unique concept of the gaze, interpretation and execution of a script, and the curation of a distinct visual language. This makes comics a viable candidate for analysis using the field of performance studies and other theatrical forms of analysis. The process of comics and how they are read is discussed before a brief literature review of performance and comics studies scholarship. Two comics, one nonfiction and one fiction, are analyzed using the key concepts from the literature review.

The Rock Hill Economic Development Records document planning, redevelopment, and economic growth initiatives in Rock Hill, South Carolina, from the late eighteenth century through the early twenty-first century, with the bulk of the materials dating from the mid-twentieth century through the early 2000s. The collection contains photographs, city and regional planning studies, architectural and engineering plans, maps, land plats, newspaper clippings, brochures, and organizational records that illustrate evolving approaches to urban development, historic preservation, transportation, and downtown revitalization.

Roberts (1916-2000) who was a 1938 graduate of Winthrop and a 25 year veteran of the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) and Women's Army Corps (WAC). This collection includes photographs, photocopies, postcards, report cards, illustrations, handwritten notes, military documents and certificates, service medals and ribbons, military dog tags, two photo albums, transcriptions of WWII correspondence, and Roberts family histories. The Covid-19 pandemic sent shockwaves through the theater industry that have seen dozens of venues across the country laying off workers, shortening seasons, and even closing altogether. Costs have risen, audiences have been slow to return, and traditional sources of funding have dried up. What then, are theaters to do? By conducting an economic analysis and examining published and original interviews with theater practitioners, this essay explores this crisis as it has affected the regional nonprofit theater sector, specifically the members of the League of Resident Theaters (LORT). Violin pedagogy has largely ignored the last century of repertoire. Students finish their training with very few of the technical or musical skills required for the successful performance of contemporary music. This document discusses why newer repertoire should be added for all students and how teachers may introduce it to the traditional program of study without excessive disruption to the existing methods of teaching. Finding appropriate repertoire can be very difficult so this document includes a series of appropriate works which encompass beginner, intermediate, and advanced ability levels. This paper will look at how the processing efforts of an archivist mirror that of an autobiographer through the shared motivation of adding to the cultural memory or textual canon of a society. For archival purposes, the typical steps of ingesting, preparing, and presenting a collection are creation, capture, arrangement/description, and pluralization. To create an autobiography, writers take the memories that have been created and experienced due to events in their lives and capture those memories via recording in the literary form known as autobiography. Artistic behavior modeling is essential for the development of creative confidence in both the teacher and students. In this study, I adopted a mixed methods approach incorporating both qualitative and quantitative data to determine the impact of artistic behavior modeling on creativity and independence in high school visual arts. The impact of behavior modeling was studied in a student-led, studio-style approach in the classroom. Utilizing writing prompts, observational data, self-reflections, artwork development, and letter grades, I determined that when educators create and reflect on their personal art alongside their students, students become more creatively independent. Tortious interference with contract has bedeviled legal commentators for over a century. It can provide relief in some situations where straightforward contract breach cannot reach. But these claims have also been derided for threatening competition, at-will employment, free speech, and important guardrails on other private law claims. The doctrine is also difficult to square with theories of efficient contract breach and the long-held view that contracts on their own are not property interests.

How Do You Solve A Problem Like Artistic Freedom In The American Theatre?: A Plea For Denying Copyright Protection To Staging Requirements, Michael Ecker

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

The note argues that extending copyright protection to theatrical stage directions would severely threaten the collaborative nature of American theater, stifling creativity and inclusivity. It contends that stage directions, as a unique aspect of dramatic works, should not be eligible for copyright protection under the Copyright Act of 1976, particularly due to the merger doctrine, which denies protection when ideas and their expression are inseparable. The note emphasizes the importance of preserving theater as a collaborative and interpretive art form, where the interplay between playwrights, directors, and performers is essential to its vitality.

The market, in contrast, is a site where autonomous beings contract, pursuing their interests efficiently and maximising wealth.
