In this paper,we study uplink covert communication in a space-air system, where an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) transmits sensitive data to a Geosynchronous Earth Orbit (GEO) satellite while preventing the transmission action from being discovered by a warden. We derive the optimal decision threshold of the warden. We investigate the 3-dimensional (3D) beamformer and 3D trajectory design for the transmitter UAV against this optimum warden to maximize the covert transmission rate in the presence of imperfect channel state information and uncertain noise. Due to the non-convex structure and dependence between beamforming vectors and locations of the transmitter UAV,we develop a decoupling …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Building a comprehensive understanding of geo-ecological functions is viewed as a critical step in the quantification of carbonate and sediment budgets on coral reefs. Although parrotfishes are known to play key roles in such functions, the roles of surgeonfishes are less well understood. This is despite surgeonfishes being some of the largest and most abundant, nominally herbivorous fishes on reefs, with the potential to play a major role in sediment dynamics. Here, we quantified the role of four focal surgeonfish species across two functional groups (sediment suckers and brushers) in cross-habitat sediment dynamics by combining data on behavioural observations, fish …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Finding automated AI techniques to proactively defend against malware has become increasingly critical. The ability of an AI model to correctly classify novel malware is dependent on the quality of the features it is trained with and the authenticity of the features is dependent on the analysis tool. Peekaboo, a Dynamic Binary Instrumentation tool defeats evasive malware to capture its genuine behaviour. The ransomware Assembly instructions captured by Peekaboo, follow Zipf's law, a principle also observed in natural languages, indicating Transformer models are particularly well-suited to binary classification. We propose Pulse, a novel framework for zero day ransomware detection with …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Eco-Engineered Hollow Fe2o3/Carbon Nanocomposite Spheres: Evaluating Structural, Optical, Antibacterial, And Lead Adsorption Properties, Islam Gomaa
Nanotechnology Research Centre
This work presents a facile mechano-thermal route for the synthesis of carbon-decorated, hollow, mesoporous α-Fe2O3 microspheres. Comprehensive characterization (XRD, XPS, FT-IR, SEM/EDX, TGA, zeta-potential) confirmed the formation of phase-pure hematite with nanoscale crystallites (~19 nm), substantial residual surface carbon (~40 wt%) consistent with Fe–O–C linkages, and a positive surface charge (+15.9 mV). The hierarchical hollow/mesoporous architecture enables fast ion transport and provides extensive interior binding sites, resulting in rapid Pb(II) uptake that reaches 92% removal in ≈15 min at pH 5.0. The adsorption follows a Langmuir isotherm (qmax ≈ 70.6 mg/g) and pseudo-second-order kinetics, indicative of chemisorption coupled to efficient …

The relic of the Mediterranean’s deadliest shipwreck, in which around 1000 migrants perished at sea in 2015, was resurrected as an art installation displayed at the 58th Venice Art Biennale titled Barca Nostra (Our Boat), by artist Christoph Büchel in 2019. The shipwreck was placed on a wharf near a café at the festival without an accompanying descriptive text. It was considered disrespectful, as it is a display of a site of tragic Black deaths for white middle-class spectatorial consumption. It served as a site for tourist selfies. It also serves as a memorial and sparks debates about migration and …
First-Principles Modeling Of Nitazoxanide Analogues As Prospective Pfor-Targeted Antibacterials, Islam Gomaa
First-Principles Modeling Of Nitazoxanide Analogues As Prospective Pfor-Targeted Antibacterials, Islam Gomaa
Nanotechnology Research Centre
Pyruvate:ferredoxin oxidoreductase (PFOR) is a key Achilles’ heel in anaerobic pathogens. We integrate electronic-structure calculations (DFT), cheminformatic QSAR metrics, and residue-resolved docking to distill a concise “recognition code” and translate it into practical design rules. Using nitazoxanide (Nita; ΔG(bind) ≈ −10.0 kcal·mol−1) as a well-established reference, productive binding requires a conserved triad: a hydrogen-bond donor addressing Thr-997 and Cys-840, a π–π stack with Phe-869, and a recurrent π–σ contact to Thr-997 that orients the scaffold. Deacetylation to tizoxanide unmasks the phenolic donor and raises local electrophilicity, yet it also slightly loosens pocket packing (−9.6 kcal·mol−1). Strategic halogenation introduces a σ-hole …

Inorganic dietary nitrate, metabolized through an endogenous pathway involving nitrate reducing bacteria, improves cardiovascular health, but its effects on the oral and intestinal microbiomes of older adults with treated hypertension are unknown. Our study investigated the effects of nitrate from beetroot juice on the oral and intestinal microbiomes of this population. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial was conducted with 15 participants (age range: 56–71 years), who consumed nitrate-rich or nitrate-depleted (placebo) beetroot juice for 4 weeks. The oral microbiome analysis revealed an increase in Neisseria and a decrease in Veillonella relative abundance (for both, PERMANOVA p < 0.001), with no significant changes in the intestinal microbiome composition. Our findings suggest that an increased dietary nitrate intake from a vegetable source may selectively modulate the oral microbiome and promote an increased abundance of nitrate-reducing species, which was previously associated with improved cardiovascular health outcomes.
