Revolutionizing The Immaculate Conception: The Limitations Of Medieval Theology And The Advancements Of John Duns Scotus, Emily G. Knoppe Jan 2025

Revolutionizing The Immaculate Conception: The Limitations Of Medieval Theology And The Advancements Of John Duns Scotus, Emily G. Knoppe

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Although in the modern era, the Immaculate Conception is a controversial doctrine that prompts conflict primarily between Catholic and non-Catholic groups, during the medieval period Roman Catholics were greatly divided on the topic. Opposition to the belief hinges not only on its lack of scriptural basis and complicated theology, which some deem as placing Mary outside of the need for Christ’s redemption, but also on the fact that it was not declared dogma until 1854 by Pope Pius IX. In this thesis, I first consider how Augustine of Hippo’s original sin theology laid the foundation for avid rejection of the …

From The Battlefield To The Asylum: The Social Construction Of Disability In Italy, 1900 - 1950, Brandie Crisp Robb Jan 2025

From The Battlefield To The Asylum: The Social Construction Of Disability In Italy, 1900 - 1950, Brandie Crisp Robb

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

The Italian social construction of disability reflects a complex interplay between social, religious, political, and religious influences present during the first half of the twentieth century. While Western European and American disability discourse remained similar, those influences unique to Italy resulted in the formation of two distinct disability discourses during the early twentieth century: that of the heroic physically disabled veteran who sacrificed everything for the good of Italy, and the eugenically unfit Italian associated with dependency and uselessness. By combining a theoretical framework that includes critical disability theory with historical methodology, the following thesis demonstrates how the emerging disability …

In Code We Trust: Blockchain’S Decentralization Paradox, Sangita F. Gazi Jan 2025

In Code We Trust: Blockchain’S Decentralization Paradox, Sangita F. Gazi

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

This Article explores blockchain technology’s decentralization and governance challenges. It interrogates the tension between the idea of a trustless, decentralized economy at the core of blockchain’s promise and the realities of power concentration and information asymmetry. Examining the ramifications of the Crypto Winter of 2022 on trust and governance within the blockchain ecosystem, the Article also underscores a critical paradox within blockchain ecosystems. It argues that despite the foundational ethos of decentralization and open participation, the governance structures of major blockchain networks manifest significant centralization, challenging the narrative of an egalitarian, user-driven evolution. The current state of blockchain’s centralities fundamentally …

Netchoice, Regulatory Competition, And The Real Battle Behind Social Media Regulations, Tao Huang, Assistant Professor Of Law Jan 2025

Netchoice, Regulatory Competition, And The Real Battle Behind Social Media Regulations, Tao Huang, Assistant Professor Of Law

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

Regulating online social media platforms has been a fiercely debated issue for years. The NetChoice case decided by the US Supreme Court 2023 Term arises from a circuit split regarding Florida and Texas laws that regulate social media content moderation. Most discussions on regulation of social media content moderation have focused on whether social media platforms are speakers (editors) or carriers (conduits), and whether their moderation practice constitutes editorial judgment (i.e., protected speech). This Article argues that this framing of the debate ignores another more important role of social media platforms—as regulators. Platforms, when they enact and enforce their content …

And The Two Shall Become One: Conceptualizing The Right Of Publicity As The Nexus Of Trademark And Copyright Law, Alvin Zhang, J.D. Candidate Jan 2025

And The Two Shall Become One: Conceptualizing The Right Of Publicity As The Nexus Of Trademark And Copyright Law, Alvin Zhang, J.D. Candidate

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

The right of publicity, which bars the unauthorized commercial use of a celebrity’s likeness, has become increasingly important in recent years. As generative artificial intelligence (AI) threatens to replace singers’ voices and actors’ appearances on screen, people are increasingly looking to the right of publicity to protect entertainers from exploitation.

Defining the right of publicity, however, is notoriously difficult. Since the right overlaps with both trademark and copyright law, circuit courts are currently split over whether to apply the trademark-based Rogers test or the copyright-based transformative use test.

This Note, in addressing this split, proposes a legal framework under which …

Trouble, Trouble, Trouble: Taylor Swift, Ticketmaster, And Arbitration, Imre S. Szalai Professor Of Social Justice

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

Through Ticketmaster’s use of arbitration and the controversy surrounding Ticketmaster’s botched sale of tickets for Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour, this Article explores problems with the broad use of arbitration in the United States. Arbitration, a private contractual method of resolving disputes in a binding manner, is a neutral process that can provide many benefits. However, under the current broad scope of arbitration law, virtually every type of claim can be arbitrated. A more limited arbitration law could provide more robust enforcement of laws, greater accountability and transparency, and stronger development of precedent within our legal system. Stronger parties (like …

Simulation Model To Estimate Pretreatment (Baseline) Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Levels In People Living With Homozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia, Jing Gu, Robert J Sanchez, Alexandra Koumas, Sandeep Tripathi, Harshit Dixit, Adam Amer, Laurence Sperling, Christie M Ballantyne

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Introduction: Pretreatment levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) are a primary consideration for the clinical diagnosis of homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH). However, determination of pretreatment LDL-C can be challenging in this population because many individuals begin lipid-lowering therapy (LLT) early in life before diagnosis of HoFH.

Methods: A previously developed simulation model was adapted to estimate pretreatment LDL-C in people living with HoFH, based on their treated LDL-C value and current LLT (statin, ezetimibe, alirocumab, evolocumab, and/or lipoprotein apheresis).

Results: The tool includes an interface for users to provide relevant details for estimating non-clinical pretreatment LDL-C, specifically for patients suspected …

Mechanosensitivity Of Macrophage Polarization: Comparing Small Molecule Leukadherin-1 To Substrate Stiffness, Hemant Joshi, Edgar Anaya, Anvitha Addanki, Alison Almgren-Bell, Elizabeth M Todd, Sharon Celeste Morley Jan 2025

Mechanosensitivity Of Macrophage Polarization: Comparing Small Molecule Leukadherin-1 To Substrate Stiffness, Hemant Joshi, Edgar Anaya, Anvitha Addanki, Alison Almgren-Bell, Elizabeth M Todd, Sharon Celeste Morley

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Macrophages sustain tissue homeostasis through host defense and wound repair. To promote host defense, macrophages upregulate surface markers associated with antigen processing and secrete pro-inflammatory mediators such as IL-6 and IL-1β. After pathogen clearance, macrophages shift phenotype to promote wound repair. Shifts in phenotypes are termed "polarization" and have historically been modeled by exposure to soluble mediators such as LPS+IFNγ (host defense) or IL-4+IL-13 (tissue repair). Greater emphasis is now being placed on understanding how the mechanical environment of macrophages, such as tissue compliance, regulates macrophages responses. Here, we compare incubation of primary macrophages on collagen-coated silica gels of varying …

Central Obesity Is An Independent Determinant Of Advanced Fibrosis In Lean Patients With Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Arka De, Naveen Bhagat, Manu Mehta, Priya Singh, Sahaj Rathi, Nipun Verma, Sunil Taneja, Madhumita Premkumar, Ajay Duseja Jan 2025

Central Obesity Is An Independent Determinant Of Advanced Fibrosis In Lean Patients With Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Arka De, Naveen Bhagat, Manu Mehta, Priya Singh, Sahaj Rathi, Nipun Verma, Sunil Taneja, Madhumita Premkumar, Ajay Duseja

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Background: The current definition of lean is based on body mass index (BMI). However, BMI is an imperfect surrogate for adiposity and provides no information on central obesity (CO). Hence, we explored the differences in clinical profile and liver disease severity in lean patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) with and without CO.

Methods: One hundred seventy lean patients with NAFLD (BMI < 23 kg/m2) were divided into two groups depending upon the presence or absence of CO (waist circumference ≥80 cm in females and ≥90 cm in males). Noninvasive assessment of steatosis was done by ultrasound and controlled attenuation parameter (CAP), while fibrosis was assessed with FIB-4 and liver stiffness measurement (LSM). FibroScan-AST (FAST) score was used for non-invasive prediction of NASH with significant fibrosis.

Results: Of 170 patients with lean NAFLD, 96 (56.5%) had CO. Female gender (40.6% vs. 17.6%, P = 0.001), hypertriglyceridemia (58.3% vs. 39.2%, P = 0.01) and metabolic syndrome (23.9% vs. 4.1%, P < 0.001) were more common in the CO group. There was a poor correlation between BMI and waist circumference (r = 0.24, 95% CI: 0.09-0.38). Grade 2-3 steatosis on ultrasound was significantly more common in CO patients (30% vs. 12.3%, P = 0.007). CAP …

Pfedrag: A Personalized Federated Retrieval-Augmented Generation System With Depth-Adaptive Tiered Embedding Tuning, Hangyu He, Xin Yuan, Kai Wu, Ren Ping Liu, Wei Ni

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Large Language Models (LLMs) can undergo hallucinations in specialized domains, and standard Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) often falters due to general-purpose embeddings ill-suited for domain-specific terminology. Though domain-specific fine-tuning enhances retrieval, centralizing data introduces privacy risks. The use of federated learning (FL) can alleviate this to some extent, but faces challenges of data heterogeneity, poor personalization, and expensive training data generation. We propose pFedRAG, a novel Personalized Federated RAG framework, which enables efficient collaborative fine-tuning of embedding models to address these challenges. The key contribution is a new Depth-Adaptive Tiered Embedding (DATE) architecture, which comprises a Global Shared Layer, combined using …

Practical Application Of Artificial Intelligence For Ecological Image Analysis: Trialling Different Levels Of Taxonomic Classification To Promote Convolutional Neural Network Performance, Amelia E.H. Bridges, Eleanor Cross, Kyran P. Graves, Nils Piechaud, Antony Raymont, Kerry L. Howell

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly convolutional neural networks (CNNs), into ecological research presents new opportunities for the automated analysis of image-based data. This study explores the practical application of CNNs for ecological image analysis by trialling annotation to different levels of taxonomic classification to determine their impact on model performance. We systematically compare various annotation strategies, evaluating their effects on the accuracy of CNNs in ecological contexts; as well as considering the feasibility of manually annotating training data to different levels. We demonstrate that variation in annotations groupings (animal, phylum or morphology) has little impact on model performance, …

Rivers across the world are increasingly fragmented due to anthropogenic barriers, with the restoration of connectivity often using fish passes. Fish passes are, however, usually designed for anadromous species, despite ecologically important non-anadromous species being present in the communities impacted by fragmentation. To assess the outcomes for non-anadromous fishes of the installation of multiple fish passes and weir modifications, the movements of the potamodromous European barbel Barbus barbus were evaluated in the lower River Severn basin, western Britain, which was fragmented by six weirs (two on a tributary, four on the Severn mainstem). Movements of individual fish were measured using …

Global calls for greater ocean protection have sparked renewed interest in very large marine protected areas (VLMPAs, >100,000 km2) to achieve management targets; however, their conservation value is debated. We assessed the suitability of a VLMPA (640,000 km2) in the Indian Ocean for capturing the movements of resident mobile marine megafauna. We found that 95% of foraging, breeding and/or locally migrating individuals occurred within the VLMPA despite variable habitat use; adult hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata, n = 22, 6124 tracking days) foraged on mesophotic banks (>30 m depth), reef manta rays (Mobula alfredi, n = …
