Investigation On The Effects Of Hypoxia-Mimicking Agents In Cancer Progression And Oxidative Stress In Hepatocellular Carcinoma, June Wong Xin Ni
Investigation On The Effects Of Hypoxia-Mimicking Agents In Cancer Progression And Oxidative Stress In Hepatocellular Carcinoma, June Wong Xin Ni
Student Works (2020-2029)
Hypoxia, or oxygen deprivation, is a common pathological feature found in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) is the master transcription factor of oxygen homeostasis, eliciting a wide range of cellular adaptive responses to either enhance oxygen delivery or reduce oxygen consumption. HIF is primarily regulated by two types of oxygen sensors, the prolyl hydroxylase domain-containing proteins (PHDs) and factor-inhibiting HIF (FIH). In tumours, HIF functions as a double-edged sword whereby it could either promote or hinder tumour progression. This is mainly contributed by the pleiotropic nature of hypoxia and tumour heterogeneity. Recently, there is a growing interest in the …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Gut microbiome metagenomics is emerging as a cornerstone of precision medicine, offering exceptional opportunities for improved diagnostics, risk stratification, and therapeutic development. Advances in high-throughput sequencing have uncovered robust microbial signatures linked to infectious, inflammatory, metabolic, and neoplastic diseases. Clinical applications now include pathogen detection, antimicrobial resistance profiling, microbiota-based therapies, and enterotype-guided patient stratification. However, translation into routine care is hindered by significant barriers including methodological variability, limited functional annotation, lack of bioinformatics standardization, and underrepresentation of global populations. This review synthesizes current translational strategies, emphasizing the need for hypothesis-driven designs, multi-omic integration, longitudinal and multi-center cohorts, and mechanistic validation. …

In recent years, smart healthcare systems (SHS) spurred by the Internet of things have revolutionized how people manage their health. Despite their numerous benefits, SHS still face many challenges worldwide, including limited user motivation. This study builds on the valence-instrumentality-expectancy theory to examine the motivational factors influencing the use of SHS, while also considering the moderating role of social support. We conducted two studies— one in the United States and the other in Qatar—to assess how well the proposed model applies across different cultural contexts. Our findings show that the model explains users’ motivations to use SHS and the interdependencies …

Historically, women faced patterns of prejudice and gender-based oppression, resulting in the denial of their fundamental rights. Through years of ingrained subordination under authoritarian regimes, activism birthed various movements and organizations that sought liberation. As militant groups gained traction, withstanding large-scale issues, women’s struggles were seldom addressed within nationalist movements. Literature has documented the roots of activism, women’s organizations, and the socio-political conditions throughout Philippine history. However, there is a narrow understanding of women’s experiences and how these mold their individual identities in response to shared struggles. This study attempts to design a local framework elucidating the motivations and drivers …

This research investigates the movement and impact of oil spills in Sharm Obhur, a coastal creek near Jeddah, in the Red Sea. Utilizing a high-resolution multi-beam echo sounder and the Delft3D-FLOW hydrodynamic simulation model, the study traces the oil spill trajectories, considering key factors such as meteorological conditions, spill volume, and oil properties. The model predicts the movement of the oil spill both within Sharm Obhur and its progression towards the Red Sea. Results from the model are intended to assist in the development of effective spill response strategies, improving navigation safety, protecting coral reefs, and preserving the local ecosystem. …

The present study examines the efficacy of pre- processing of sediment samples prior to DNA isolation to obtain high-quality eDNA for metagenomic analyses from crystallizer saltern pond in Goa during the salt harvesting phase. The quality of the extracted eDNA were confirmed through spectrophotometric analysis and PCR amplification of the 16S rRNA gene. The study showed that method 2 and 3 incorporating preprocessing of the sediment samples yielded better quality eDNA compared to the direct isolation protocol (method1). By adopting the best method i.e., preprocessing by sediment suspension- filtration, followed by DNA isolation, the eDNA was procured and subjected to …

Seagrasses function as primary producers and as spawning grounds and shelter for marine biota. Regardless of their relevance, seagrasses are under threat due to anthropogenic impacts and an increasing frequency of extreme climate events. Enhalus acoroides is a species of seagrass that is spread in the east and southeast waters of Bali, from Sanur Beach to Nusa Dua Beach. This study aims to analyze the differences in morphometry and the chlorophyll, proline, and malondialdehyde (MDA) content, a marker for oxidative stress in E. acoroides leaves at Pengastian Beach, Semawang Beach, and Samuh Beach, Bali. Samples were collected using line transect …

The new configuration of NEMO (Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean) model in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden was presented for analyzing latent heat flux (LHF) and sensible heat flux (SHF) patterns in the region. The model was setup with 1/20° horizontal resolution and 30 vertical layers, using ERA5 atmospheric data for surface forcing. The model output for LHF, and SHF was compared with KAUST-Buoy observations and many reanalysis products (the French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea (IFREMER) surface turbulence fluxes, Japanese Ocean Flux Data Sets with Use of Remote Sensing Observations (J-OFURO3), Objectively Analyzed …
