Crop Yield Prediction At Multiple Spatial Scales With Statistical Machine Learning, Vaibhav Charan, Pratishtha Poudel
Crop Yield Prediction At Multiple Spatial Scales With Statistical Machine Learning, Vaibhav Charan, Pratishtha Poudel
Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship
Understanding and accurately predicting crop yield is becoming increasingly important today in the face of global food security challenges, and thus, the availability of standardized data and scalable models is the need of the hour. To support this, researchers have developed CY-Bench (Crop Yield Benchmark), a comprehensive dataset that helps forecast maize and wheat yields on a global scale. This research project primarily involved working with the CY-Bench dataset aiming to improve crop yield prediction through machine learning. Initially, papers explaining the CY-Bench dataset and other papers for agriculture modeling were studied and analyzed in detail. The research then progressed …

Faculty Research 2025
Immuno-oncology and the advent of immunotherapies, in particular immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), have fundamentally altered the way we treat cancer. Yet only a small subset of patients actually responds to ICIs, and many face significant adverse effects, making the accurate selection of patients for ICIs essential to the work of immuno-oncology. Immune biomarkers, such as programmed death-ligand 1, microsatellite instability/defective mismatch repair, and tumor mutational burden have been developed for patient selection and stratification for ICIs, though their predictive abilities remain limited. This is due to several challenges: lack of adequate tissue sampling, the time-consuming and subjective nature of manual …
Comparative Dosimetric Evaluation Of Single-Beam And Two-Beam Grid Therapy In Head And Neck Cancers, Stephanie Scott Stinson
Comparative Dosimetric Evaluation Of Single-Beam And Two-Beam Grid Therapy In Head And Neck Cancers, Stephanie Scott Stinson
Masters Projects
This study aimed to evaluate whether a single-beam or two-beam configuration in GRID therapy offers superior tumor coverage to the Gross target volume(GTV) and organ-at-risk (OAR) sparing in head and neck cancer patients. Ten patients previously treated with GRID therapy to the left neck were retrospectively selected. For each patient, single-beam and two-beam plans were generated using consistent field size and energy. Dosimetric comparisons were performed using dose-volume histograms (DVHs), focusing on the highest dose received at any single point( dmax) and the average radiation dose delivered across an entire volume (dmean), and the volume covered by the 70% and …
A Quality Improvement Project Cultural Competency: A Project For Improving Culturally Competent Care Among Mental Health Providers, Lanre Olanrewaju
A Quality Improvement Project Cultural Competency: A Project For Improving Culturally Competent Care Among Mental Health Providers, Lanre Olanrewaju
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Cultural competence, knowledge, and awareness are essential for improving mental healthcare outcomes in diverse populations. Despite the need, the absence of structured cultural competence training contributes to reduced quality of care and health disparities. The purpose of this quality improvement project is to improve cultural awareness and knowledge among mental health providers at an outpatient clinic by implementing structured staff training. A needs assessment identified gaps in cultural competence knowledge, inconsistent practices, and limited provider confidence in addressing diverse patient needs. In the methodology, the model used to answer the PICOT question is Purnell’s Model, guided by a structured process …
Volumetric Imaging Of Cellular Dynamics Using Light-Sheet Microscopy: From Subcellular Structures To Whole Organisms, Md Nasful Huda Prince
Volumetric Imaging Of Cellular Dynamics Using Light-Sheet Microscopy: From Subcellular Structures To Whole Organisms, Md Nasful Huda Prince
Optical Science and Engineering ETDs
Advancing biomedical imaging requires platforms that combine high-resolution, speed, and stability across biological scales. This dissertation presents three innovations designed to address limitations of conventional light-sheet and oblique plane imaging. First, we introduce Reflected Inline Detection in Epi-Oblique Plane Microscopy (RIDE-OPM), a compact and drift-resistant system that eliminates a tertiary detection path while maintaining alignment flexibility, enabling robust long-term live imaging. Second, we present a high-speed Axially Swept Light-Sheet Microscopy (ASLM) platform for cleared tissues, using dual foci and synchronized sweeping to achieve isotropic sub-micron resolution at up to 40 frames-per-second, a fourfold improvement over standard ASLM. Integrated with a …
Opposing Roles For Iron Transport Systems In Gallium Tolerance In Extraintestinal Pathogenic Escherichia Coli, Nagama Parveen
Opposing Roles For Iron Transport Systems In Gallium Tolerance In Extraintestinal Pathogenic Escherichia Coli, Nagama Parveen
Theses and Dissertations
Iron is required for bacterial growth because it serves as a co-factor for enzymes involved in DNA synthesis, cellular respiration, and other processes. Disrupting bacterial iron homeostasis is an effective strategy to prevent the growth of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and gallium (Ga³⁺) has emerged as a promising candidate due to its ability to displace iron (Fe³⁺) and prevent essential iron-dependent pathways. However, Escherichia coli are naturally less sensitive to gallium than many other bacteria, and the mechanisms that control gallium tolerance are not completely understood. To address this, we performed a genome-wide transposon sequencing (TnSeq) screen to identify genes important for …
Indirect Dna Transfer To Duct Tape Rolls Stored In Cars, Yuching Chung
Indirect Dna Transfer To Duct Tape Rolls Stored In Cars, Yuching Chung
Student Theses
This project investigated the accumulation of DNA on duct tape rolls stored in cars. Specifically, we analyzed samples recovered from three areas (the inside, outside, and flat sides) of unused duct tape stored under the driver's seat and trunk of cars for seven days. Twelve volunteers were recruited, resulting in 64 DNA samples from 12 cars. We evaluated DNA quantities and STR genotyping outcomes after amplification with the GlobalFiler™ kit. On average, the DNA yields from under the driver's seat were higher than from the trunk, but the difference was not significant. The inside of the tape roll yielded significantly …

Exploring Hepatic Stellate Cell-Driven Fibrosis: Therapeutic Advances And Future Perspectives, Alka Singh, Ansab Akhtar, Prashant Shukla
School of Medicine Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Liver fibrosis, a progressive liver disease arising from viral or metabolic causes, poses a major global health challenge due to its potential progression to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Due to the complex aetiology and epidemiology of liver fibrosis, most therapies fail in the clinic, and very few drugs have been approved by the US FDA. APPROACH: This review highlights the pathophysiological features of liver fibrosis, with a focus on novel targets in hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), key players in the fibrogenesis process, to develop successful therapeutic approaches using both pharmacological agents and active targeting strategies. The review …
Artificial Ignorance: Understanding The Role Of Ai In Modern Agnotology, Amit Ray, Michael Nolan
Artificial Ignorance: Understanding The Role Of Ai In Modern Agnotology, Amit Ray, Michael Nolan
Articles
This paper explores the concept of agnotology, the deliberate production of ignorance, within the context of modern scientific endeavors, particularly in the corporate and technological sectors. It examines how industries use various tactics to manipulate public understanding of scientific issues, often to protect profits and limit liability. The rise of private sector funding and the increasing reliance on technologies like AI and machine learning have exacerbated this process by making scientific inquiry more opaque and less accountable. Ultimately, we argue that as knowledge production becomes more entangled with corporate interests and technological systems, traditional methods of oversight and regulation are …

Background Cancer cachexia, a multifactorial syndrome characterized by unintentional weight loss, is a frequent complication of cancer that impacts patients' quality of life and survival.
Methods In this retrospective review, we evaluated the landscape of clinical trials registered on ClinicalTrials.gov for the consideration of potential factors contributing to biological human heterogeneity in their design and analyses.
Results Among clinical trials registered from 1995-2024, we observed increased inclusion of female participants, but lack of reporting of sex as a biological variable. The majority (similar to 93%) of participants were of Caucasian descent. There was a substantial divergence in the diagnostic criteria …
Evaluating Parotid Gland Dose Between Electronic Tissue Compensation And Field In Field Treatment Techniques For Parotid Sparing In Whole-Brain Radiotherapy, Joesph E. Bodgonas
Evaluating Parotid Gland Dose Between Electronic Tissue Compensation And Field In Field Treatment Techniques For Parotid Sparing In Whole-Brain Radiotherapy, Joesph E. Bodgonas
Masters Projects
Purpose:
The parotid glands are essential to salivary function and patient quality of life, yet they are not routinely prioritized as organs at risk (OARs) during whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT). With growing recognition of long-term side effects like xerostomia in patients with prolonged survival after WBRT, parotid-sparing techniques warrant investigation. This study compares radiation dose to the parotid glands using three different 3D conformal WBRT planning approaches: field-in-field (FiF) with blocking, electronic tissue compensation (eCOMP) without blocking, and eCOMP with blocking.
Methods and Materials:
A retrospective study was conducted on 20 patients previously treated with 3D conformal WBRT. Original eCOMP plans …
Like A Scientist: A Method For Introducing Disciplinary Literacy In The Science Classroom, Elizabeth L. Kuperus
Like A Scientist: A Method For Introducing Disciplinary Literacy In The Science Classroom, Elizabeth L. Kuperus
Masters Projects
To be literate within a particular area of study requires an understanding of the literary disciplinary norms practiced in that field. Within the science classroom, students are often expected to engage with scientific literature, yet are unable to fully grasp the material since they have not been taught the disciplinary literacies associated with science. This project evaluates research surrounding the area of scientific disciplinary literacy and suggests how it could be used to inform classroom instruction. Disciplinary literacy skills need to be explicitly taught and modeled to demonstrate how students can approach texts and other literacy practices as a scientist. …
