Mechanisms Of Gold Enrichment In Seafloor Massive Sulfide Deposits: A Study On The Higashi-Aogashima Hydrothermal Field, Claudia Martinez
Mechanisms Of Gold Enrichment In Seafloor Massive Sulfide Deposits: A Study On The Higashi-Aogashima Hydrothermal Field, Claudia Martinez
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The study of Seafloor Massive Sulfides (SMS) deposit formation is vital for assessing both the economic potential and environmental risks posed by future marine mining projects. Metal-rich SMS deposits form in hydrothermal vent systems within tectonically active regions, such as back-arc basins, where faults enhance crustal permeability, enabling fluid migration driven by magmatic heat sources at depth in the crust. Currently our understanding of SMS formation processes is based on bulk-rock geochemical and isotopic data, lacking the necessary spatial and temporal resolution to understand ore forming processes. As a result, critical gaps remain in understanding the exact mechanisms responsible for …
Ecological Momentary Assessment Of Mood, Affect, And Perceived Criticism: Investigation Of Daily Patterns And Family Impact, Kayla Mcginty
Ecological Momentary Assessment Of Mood, Affect, And Perceived Criticism: Investigation Of Daily Patterns And Family Impact, Kayla Mcginty
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Perceived criticism (PC) is a component of expressed emotion (EE) that assesses an individual’s perceptions of the criticism that they are exposed to within their interpersonal relationships. PC is elevated among individuals with mood disorders, and mood and mood symptoms act as both a predictor and an outcome of PC. However, few studies have examined the relationship between PC and affect, a more momentary measure of emotion that can serve as a guide to underlying mood. Additionally, limited research has examined how PC within family relationships compares to other interpersonal interactions. Understanding the relationship between momentary affect and PC and …

Bio-Inspired Electroactive Polymer (Eap) Sensors For Surface And Canal Flow Sensing In Dynamic Environments, Nazanin Minaian
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Nature can often create some of the most efficient and elegant solutions to complex problems, and engineering stands to benefit greatly from these time-tested designs. One of the more sophisticated examples of this is the lateral line system in fish: a distributed network of superficial and canal neuromasts that enables aquatic species to detect fluid disturbances with remarkable precision. This dissertation leverages that biological framework to explore the potential of electroactive polymers (EAPs), aiming not just to replicate structure, but to emulate function. Two classes of EAPs form the basis of this work: electroactive plasticized polymer gels (EPPGs) and ionic polymer-metal …

School Absenteeism In Children With Disabilities: An Analysis Of School Climate And Academic Mindset, Karolyne Bastos Stucki
School Absenteeism In Children With Disabilities: An Analysis Of School Climate And Academic Mindset, Karolyne Bastos Stucki
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Students with disabilities (SWDs) are more likely to be chronically absent than general education peers (Anderson, 2021; Gee, 2018, U.S. Department of Education, 2016). Etiology for SWDs is complex with influencing factors spanning multiple ecological levels, but bolstering protective factors for SWDs may address attendance disparities. Multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) models have the potential to address absenteeism in SWDs via school-wide preventative and/or intervention efforts (Tier 1 & 2) aimed at increasing or decreasing influencing factors in students with disabilities. School climate and academic mindset may influence students with disabilities’ attendance. The purpose of the present study was to …
An Analysis Of The Influence Of Human Disease Pathogens On Core Behaviors Of The Black-Legged Tick, Emily F. Marinko
An Analysis Of The Influence Of Human Disease Pathogens On Core Behaviors Of The Black-Legged Tick, Emily F. Marinko
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Ixodes scapularis, the black-legged or deer tick, is a vector for several different disease-causing microbes, including the causative agent of Lyme disease. As such, it is a major health concern for people living within its range in the eastern half of the United States, a habitation area that is increasing due to climate change. Despite its medical relevance as a disease vector, there is still much to learn about the basic behavior of these arachnids in the wild. Thus, the major hypothesis of this thesis is that ticks that are infected with specific human disease-causing microbes behave differently than those …
Kinase Suppressor Of Ras 2 Regulates Energy Balance And Tumor Initiation, Dianna H. Huisman
Kinase Suppressor Of Ras 2 Regulates Energy Balance And Tumor Initiation, Dianna H. Huisman
Theses & Dissertations
Kinase Suppressor of Ras 2 (KSR2) is a scaffold that facilitates Raf-MEK-ERK signaling and is expressed in the brain, pituitary, and adrenal gland. Here, we demonstrate that KSR2 functions in the adult brain to maintain organismal energy balance and in small-cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) to promote self-renewal and clonogenicity. Disruption of KSR2 in adult mice results in hyperphagia, obesity, reduced metabolic rate, and altered activity. Using spatial transcriptomics, we identify regions of the brain associated with regulation of feeding and energy expenditure with altered gene expression following KSR2 disruption. These findings reveal regions of interest in which targeted KSR2 disruption …
Claudin-1-Mediated Signaling And Therapy Resistance In Colorectal Cancer: From Mechanism To Translation, Mark W. Primeaux
Claudin-1-Mediated Signaling And Therapy Resistance In Colorectal Cancer: From Mechanism To Translation, Mark W. Primeaux
Theses & Dissertations
Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains a leading cause of cancer-related mortality, with metastatic cases showing poor response to chemotherapy due to both intrinsic and acquired therapy resistance. Claudin-1 (CLDN1), a tight junction protein, is overexpressed and mislocalized outside of tight junctions in CRC, where it contributes to an aggressive, metastatic phenotype. Although this causal relationship has been well established, the mechanisms by which CLDN1 promotes tumor progression were unclear due to its lack of intrinsic enzymatic activity. This dissertation investigates the molecular mechanisms through which CLDN1 drives oncogenic signaling, its role in therapy resistance, and its translational potential as both a …
Restoring Translational Control With Novel Small Molecule Activators Of Pp2a In Cancer Cells, Kayla A. Jonas
Restoring Translational Control With Novel Small Molecule Activators Of Pp2a In Cancer Cells, Kayla A. Jonas
Theses & Dissertations
Hyperactivation of eIF4E-dependent translation in tumor cells is required for robust expression of oncogenic proteins and maintenance of the transformed phenotype. eIF4E binds to the 7-methylguanylate structure at the 5’ end of cellular mRNAs and nucleates the formation of the translation initiation complex, eIF4F, which recruits the preinitiation complex and resolves secondary structure in the mRNA. The ability of eIF4E to promote eIF4F assembly is negatively regulated by the translational repressor, 4E-BP1, and tumorigenesis depends on functional inactivation of 4E-BP1. A major mechanism of 4E-BP1 inactivation involves inhibitory phosphorylation by mTOR which prevents eIF4E binding. Functional inactivation can also occur …
Scientist Perspectives: A Correlation Analysis Of Translational Science Competencies Compared With Principles Of Engagement And Knowledge Integration, Rachel Wenzl
Theses & Dissertations
The competencies identified in the development of the “Fundamental Characteristics of the Translational Scientist” may not consider and fully integrate the concepts of knowledge integration and engagement, key components of the translational science spectrum. This gap may be widening and deepening the “valley of death” and exacerbating ongoing challenges in the field of translational science. This dissertation explored the association of knowledge integration, stakeholder engagement, and community engagement principles compared with translational science competencies.
Utilizing content review and a non-experimental, correlation study design, data were collected through a quantitative survey from adult research subjects all self-identified as a research investigator …
Transcriptomic And Epigenomic Profiling Of Immune Cells Responses To Simian Immunodeficiency Virus Infection In The Brain, Xiaoke Xu
Theses & Dissertations
Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) is an enveloped retrovirus that significantly impairs the human immune system. A common complication of HIV-1 infection is HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND), which, prior to the introduction of antiretroviral therapy (ART), led to considerable morbidity and mortality due to untreated neuropsychiatric manifestations. Although ART has substantially reduced the incidence of HIV-associated dementia (HAD), approximately 50% of people living with HIV (PLWH) continue to experience milder forms of HAND. The CNS is seeded by HIV during the acute phase of infection. Once in the brain, HIV targets and activates resident immune cells, primarily microglia and …

Temporal Patterns Of Ectopic Pregnancy: Using The Electronic Health Record To Illuminate A Dark Corner In Women's Health, Kirsten Hepburn
Theses & Dissertations
Ectopic pregnancy remains a significant contributor to pregnancy-related morbidity and mortality, yet little is known about whether its occurrence follows discernible temporal patters that could inform prediction and prevention efforts. This dissertation aimed to explore the temporal characteristics of ectopic pregnancy through three interrelated projects: development of a new theoretical framework, a scoping review of the literature on ectopic pregnancy temporal patterns, and an empirical study using electronic health records data from a ten-year period at a single academic medical center. The Nursing Genomic and epigenomic, Environment, and Microbiome (N-GEM) situation-specific theoretical framework was introduced as a novel nursing theory …
Role Of Stabilin-1 Expressing Macrophages In Colorectal Liver Metastasis, Jampa L. Gurung
Role Of Stabilin-1 Expressing Macrophages In Colorectal Liver Metastasis, Jampa L. Gurung
Theses & Dissertations
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the 2nd most common cause of cancer-related mortality, primarily due to its spread to distant organs. Colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM) is the foremost form of CRC spread due to the anatomical link between the liver and intestine. Despite advancements in diagnostic tools and adjuvant therapies, the survival rate of CRLM remains low, indicating the significant need to identify targetable mechanisms. Stabilin-1 (STAB1), a scavenger receptor expressed on tumor-associated macrophages, has been linked to tumorigenesis and poor outcomes in various cancers. However, the role of STAB1 in CRLM is not known. Here, we investigated the role of …

Preparing For The Habitable Worlds Observatory: Spectropolarimetric Radiative Transfer Models Of Terrestrial (Exo)Planets, Kenneth E. Goodis Gordon
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
The next major step for the exoplanet community lies in the characterization of terrestrial exoplanets, especially when it comes to identifying biosignatures and determining the habitability of these worlds. In response to this, NASA has proposed the Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO), with the primary goal of searching for and characterizing Earth-sized planets in the habitable zones (HZ) of their stars. However, current characterization strategies that only rely on the unpolarized flux from the planets lose some of the informational content of the observed light and therefore suffer from degeneracies in the calculated planetary parameters. The sensitivity of polarization to the …
